As a Houston fan who watched Yao’s career unfold.... he is criminally underrated. He could score at every angle, area rebound with the best, agile and strong, and always did it with class and professionalism. Yao is my all time favorite Rocket.... it breaks my heart that I wasn’t able to see him finish his career the way he deserved. And I feel regret that I didn’t get out to the stadium more often than I did to see the guy play in real life. Man, the world moves so fast, and the things that you cherish become just memories or RUclips highlights. Houston misses you, Yao.
增重害了姚,如果姚一直保持新秀赛季的身材,我相信姚的职业生涯会很长
@@xc7129if he would’ve kept the build of his rookie season, he’d get bodied by any center every night
Beautiful words Curtis, seems a gentleman & powerful player !
@@xc7129 it's because he didn't get enough rest. He'd play in the NBA, and then play in the Olympics for China, while most others would be resting.
I wish he didn't get injured so much, he was an amazing talent, and him + McGrady was an amazing duo to watch

The rockets team had so much potential... Yao was a great player I don’t care what anybody say
AJ The Wright Gamer yup
McGrady and Yao weren't on the court at same time much sucks all the injuries
they barely played together
The Chinese national basketball team pushed him too much. Yao couldn't get enough rest in the offseason.
That should be one of the reason he retired that early.
Now as one of the leaders of the national basketball team, Yao added "a player can refuse to play for the national team" to the regulation.
They just want money money money

As a black person I notice that we are the first ti cry foul and rightfully so, when someone makes any kind of racist statement or caricature about us.
Yet we sometimes dont give other races the same respect we demand.
Where the Shaq get off saying what he said, even to the point of purposely misrepresenting pronouncing his name. That's very uncool .
Shaq changed his tune, when Yao blocked his shot 3 in a row and one of them was a dunk. Shaq still talks openly about that until this day. Shaq says the 2 toughest Centers he's played against Yao and Akeem
I am quite sure Shaq was not trying to make a racist remark but just an insult, to spark things up a little bit, he is a very competitive guy after all. But yes I have seen black people making racist remarks, an example would be some black rappers that disregard Eminem just because he is white, the irony makes one speechless.
- As an Asian American, I don’t care. Is it racist? Sure but Shaq is not racist. His intent is what matters. And his actions were genuine especially when he only praised a couple of centers: Hakeem and Yao.
I don’t condone his actions. But at the same tome, he did it out of jest, not racism. If Shaq was being truly hateful, THEN it would matter.
Justin Lui most people can’t process this level of thought
@@jlui21 "It was only a joke" is the most stupid and overused excuse for racist comments.

Let's be honest here: if it weren't for injuries, T-mac and Yao could've led Houston to the Finals if not at least a championship
They rockets lost 6 games to the eventual champ lakers in ECF i think. With both yao or tmac injured. So yeah, they will def would have won at least one.
Well here in this part of the world word IF is pretty fckd..
IF grandmother had balls it would be grandfather
I think so too
I'm a lakers fan, but if bother were healthy, they had a chance to be a better duo than shaq and kobe. Tmac could do anything kobe could but was bigger. Yao had too many threats and skills that shaq couldn't keep up with what yao could have done. But injuries are a thing and we never will truly know.
sidjustice43 no way. Although t-mac had as much talent as Kobe. He was nowhere near as driven as Kobe. It's one thing to skilled, it's another thing to be driven. Furthermore, t-mac was nowhere the level Kobe was on the defensive end. Yao definitely had more weapons offensively, he was the better shooter. However, Yao wasn't as dominant as Shaq. Sometimes you don't need so many weapons, you just 2 or 3 very powerful ones.
Yao Ming was influential in the meme world as well! Lol

Marlo Mike an*
I agree, he should be considered one of the greatest centers to play in the NBA. He had skills that most centers don't have at his height. Unfortunately injuries took it's toll on him. If he were to play in this era he would dominate the league to the point where it would be unfair. If you want to shoot 3s he would play that way, if want to play bully ball in the post game he would play that way. You can not foul him either because he has a high free throw percentage.
@@1seatac - Yao is in the HOF. And Shaq recognized only a handful of centers as being worthy: Hakeem and Yao, come to mind. Too bad injuries rob some of the would-be greats: Grant Hill, D Rose, Penny Hardaway, etc.

Yao is probably the only player from Asia so far that really lived up to the hype with great adaptation and solid skills on both end of the court. He was also a great apprentice of Hakeem as one of the few players who truly mastered the dream steps.
It is real shame that Yao retired that early, unlike most NBA stars that have the luxury to rest during off-season, Yao has to continue playing for the national team. Lack of rest made him injury prone and resulted his early retirement. Some people even argue the retirement of him and shaq caused the downfall of grit&grind era. Now Yao is the president of China's basketball, he made a decision to split the national team(both man and woman team) into Team Blue and Team Red, one to exercise young players, second to prevent his own tragedy on younger players.

Man I remember that last season. Yao was unstoppable. Great midrange jumper, amazing post moves, and he put on some muscle. Such a shame he couldn't make it a few more years. It was amazing to watch him play though.
One thing that made him such awesome tall big guy was the fact that he wasn't a just 7'5 center, he was awesome all around in my opinion. I like to think he was fundamental in my opinion.
Was a pretty good mid range shooter, could shoot free throws excellent, and had a good post up game.

2009 Western conference semi-finals game one: Yao has just returned from his knee injury after a collision with Kobe Bryant knocked Yao out of the game to be looked at. After an emotional locker room scene where Yao is scene trying to walk off his injury, Yao re enters the game and hits a huge shot to essentially seal a game one Rockets victory, with Doug Collins delivering his famous line after Yao hits the 18 footer: "You think this guys a competitor? Man!" Yao would miss the rest of the playoffs with another stress fracture in his foot, but that game one win really showed, me at least, that with yao healthy the Rockets beat the Lakers and go on to beat the Nuggets in West finals.
When healthy no one was stopping Yao and Mcgrady.
Is no one gonna talk about that pass 3:15
he does it again later in the video lol
IKR I don’t even have to go back and look because I know exactly the one you’re talking about. That was almost Jason Williams level passing.
3 players reminded me of that pass: Bill Walton, Larry Bird and Sabonis...
That was some Larry Bird shit.
That was so unespected, I was even specting Spanish Inquisition
Injury killed his career, dude was so good. It wasn't only hight, he could shoot from everywhere, was incredibly agile for his size, he could defend, but more than anything he had the fundamentals, he just understood the game so well. He could pass the ball and was pretty much always at the right place, even when he wasn't his size enabled him to contest shots that other wouldn't have been able to. I wish he were able to play consistently all his career and also I wish he had better players around him than an often injured and individualistic T-mac.
*Rush hour 4 (2020): Shaqqie Chan and Yao Carter*
man........ 😂
Grady and YAO DID live up to the hype. Injuries and the west was even more competitive than it is now. Spurs Suns Lakers Mavericks. You had to win over 50 games back then in the west just to be an 8th seed. Kind of close to today's era but still.
That was a good ass era

"In a fantasy world where Yao never gets injure..." That's the whole thing, he could have been a lot more. Even though in his best years in the NBA, he average 20 pt + 10 rb, there only a few player that can do 20+10. Incredible shooting touch. Most of all, work ethic Yao has, I think is one of the most overlooked quality. Always the first to come to practice and last to leave, working to improve himself constantly. Too bad, his career wasn't longer, could have been one of the best centers ever.
he made enough money and more money opportunities were available to him. so his decision to give up playing is a smart move for his health.
Yao never refused the call from the national team, and he deserves more than he's achieved.
Great humble big man.
No doubt for 3 years Yao Ming was awesome!
When Yao Ming was mature enough and healthy in 2006 to 2008, Shark was going in his later career. I don't think Yao can defeat Shark in Shark's best years, but Yao was definitely among the best players in 2006 to 2008.
AI and Yao were definitely the most influential players of the 2000’s
He was a good player humble and a great work ethic..thanks for the times Yao...
Yao is really good, so big at that time, even big Shaq looks like a younger brother. What's more, he is very agile with lots of skills. He deserves to get into the fame of the hall. We don't know when we can have the second Yao, and who is the next one to improve the whole level of Chinese basketball.
Yao Ming played with a lot of selfish guards who didn’t pass the balls much, had Yao got more balls down low like Shaq, Yao would dominated in scoring.
Not selfish guards but guards can’t shot. if Yao + curry, ez game

He Better than sabonis

@@musclezhu2634 Indeed.
Yao was no doubt a kick ass center in NBA. But I love him not just because of that. He got so many injuries because our national team required him to keep training in the nba off-season and to play Olympic and all the other Asian basketball tournaments. He didn’t complained a thing. But chinese People Never really learned the science of Sport. We used our super star Yao endlessly to win some third class tournament in Asia which doesn’t even matter. But still, after Yao retired he still chooses to contribute to Chinese Basketball. He took the responsibility of being the chairman of Chinese basketball association and he improved our system so much. He divided our national team into two teams, sent them to America to play against some college teams, just to give our young players some right attitude, that we are way behind but we should still fight and there’s no shame of that. I really felt proud to have Yao as our idol.
Yao is for sure not the GOAT, but his has a different mission and in terms of that he better than MJs, LeBrons and Kobes in the heart of a Chinese.
when you are comparing shaq and yao, don't gorget yao is fight for his own country!
Wait a minute. Ming was 21 when he was done playing with the Sharks? So he started playing professionally at 16? Wow.
Bins Wanger yes, in fact if its legal, he would play for shanghai even younger
A lot of international players started playing pro in their teens.
akeme25 Just like how Luka Doncic played for Real Madrid since 15 or something like that
They always start earlier than what's allowed here in the NBA. Like Rubio and Luka Doncic probably started at 15 or 16 professionally too and then when they are of age they enter the NBA draft.
Bins Wanger His outstanding skills and unique height probably is why he could beat those much elder pros than him and survived in that league
I worked for the pistons and it was always interesting when Houston came to town because a good part of the audience was from China or were Chinese Americans and they would hold up signs in mandarin.
I used to have NBA League Pass back in the day, in large part to watch Yao Ming on a regular basis. His 2006-2007 season was his pinnacle...used to watch him regularly drop 20-35 points, 10+ boards and sometimes get a ton of blocks...he was pretty much unstoppable that season, before he got hurt. I remember him dropping something like 37 points and grabbing 18 boards against the Warriors, then following that up the next game with another 35 or 36 points against the Lakers and 8 freakin' blocks...nobody could stop him. Yeah, at his absolute peak, he was *that* good. It's too bad that just a couple of weeks later, he went down with an injury and it was a sign of things to come...after that, he had a bit more success, plus a fantastic playoff series against the Jazz that went to 7 games...then the injuries really started hitting him, and it was game over for him soon after.
My all-time favorite center

I give you credit for highlighting Yao's defensive effect. People always seemed to assume he wasn't a great defender because of his (relatively) low BPG stats and (understandable) low lateral movement speed, but he was a fantastical deterent in the paint.
One of my favorite centers for sure. Love Yao Ming
Hey Andy, great video! The only thing I would add is a major reason for his injuries was his obligation to play in the offseason while other players were resting. I believe he had an obligation to play with the Chinese national team every off season which had to have taken its toll.
Because of this I genuinely consider one of the biggest "What If's"
Bruh my yao ming jersey came in today and right after it came this video was uploaded

@@AndyHoops I got the blue m&n jersey with the pinstripes it's so nice
Yao actually has quite a complete skill set especially for a big at that time and he improved under Ewing s guidence
With such a large frame sth gotta give he was wrecked by injuries
His injuries were also due to over-use. During the summer he got to serve in the Chinese national team and never got enough break for the body, for the whole national team also counted on him for the performance. Compared to other athletes facing similar problems, i must say Yao just sacrificed himself a lot, and above all, his physical body. And his humor and EQ dealing with personal relationships with other players and officials back in China are extraordinarily superb.
I think china deserves to have like 6 games played by every nba team, in their country every season, they’re such huge fans and generate the nba so much revenue, it’s only right. China games.
Amazing how well he moves for a guy that huge
Truly underrated player!
If Yao was in his prime in today’s era, he would be the best big man in the league
Nah
Agreed he is 7'6 and could shoot midrange and doesn't miss from the freethrow
Anthony Davis, DeMarcus if he comes back, kat
submeforzuccme with his shooting form he could easily develop a 3 point game as well
Sport Mixess Hell no to KAT, and Yao was better than DeMarcus. Boogie has played the same amount of time as Yao did in the NBA and has accomplished less, plus Yao would be a better player in this era of basketball. The only competition for Yao would be AD, but then again, Yao is 7’6 and could already shoot very well from mid-range and three. Just imagine if he was playing today how much he would improve that aspect of his game. And defensively, Yao was very good (as expected being so tall). Also, he ranks higher than any big man in the league today in career PER, even above greats like Kobe, KG, Dirk, Jerry West, and Elgin Baylor.
I sat next to yao on the bench one year when he played against phoenix. My dad was playing the national anthem and i was there to support him. I sat on the bench with my aunt and uncle to my left, knowing these were not our seats and that once the players started coming out we would need to leave. Yao sits next to a 13 year old me, he looks down, i look up and he smiles and puts his hand out for knuckles and give off a deep laugh and pats me on the back. Awesome guy and an awesome memory that i get to cherish. mahalo Yao
back in those days in China, people were crazy, CRAZY of YAO.
Every tall boy like 6 foot in their youth were asking"do u play basket? are you going to be YAO?".
Those time was such a great time of Chinese basketball culture,
since finally some one could stand on the international stage and being looked up to by young boys.
And finally we could show what we got to the Americans and people around the globe to prove what Chinese could do.
Thank you Andy making this video, I want to thank YAO too.

Great video. You really nailed his impact on the game itself in your opening monologue.
He make every other players in the court look so 'short'....lol!
Big Respects! From a Korean :)
If the world human choose god father.I think is Yao.
Little known fact: Yao Ming's Career Averages were 19 pts and 9 rebounds.
His Career Averages when playing against Shaq were 21 pts and 10 rebounds
Shaq actually said that he thinks Yao Ming was on the level of Himself, Patrick Ewing, and Hakeem Olajuwon, and when you look at the fact that those three played more minutes and were used more than Yao I completely agree.
Yao's version of the dream shake was awesome. Also, I am a Pistons fan and have friends, also Pistons fans, named Yao and Darko. I miss 2003-2004!
don't forget that he was also busy during some of his offseasons playing for China in international competitions. 04 and 08 Olympics, 03 and 05 FIBA Asian championships, 06 World Championship. those games and practices added a lot of mileage to his legs.
He’d be like a skilled, more mobile version of Boban, so I think he’d be a top flight center in today’s NBA
Taller KG is what he was, Boban doesn't and will not have Yao's turn around jump shot and foot work, pass ability, and killer hook shot
I think Jokic is probably a player today who is closest to Yao. He is shorter but quicker and even more skilled in passing so he fits into today's league better.
I mean he’s a legend in nba2k
4:04 Shaq jealous of that Free Throw% 😂
He has a very short career, 8 years, played a full season 4 times, no rings, no NBA first team, great HOF career!

If he played today, he'd score 30 a game in his sleep. Imagine how far he could travel (without getting called) on 4 steps!
How did he not win most improved player
The award usually goes to players who were not expected to improve so drastically. Yao was a #1 pick in his second season so many people expected him to get better.
No.1 center in NBA of his time... NOBODY CAN STOP HIM...
I admit I only watched a few games that Yao Ming played in. The games I did watch would be him posting up, looking down at the ball like he was going to lose it, then either flail when trying to draw a foul, or get it stolen.
Jay M well then you obviously didn’t watch enough games and have really bad analysis. You should stop talking now
