- Episode 2.Henry deals with accusations of misconduct in his latest case after offering help to an aggrieved father who believes his Anglo-Greek daughter was raped and murdered before falling to her death in Jakarta - but local police have declared that it was suicide or an accident.
The Brief follows the work of defence barrister Henry Farmer (Alan Davies), whose complicated personal life manages to overlap into his work. With an overbearing workload, debt and alimony payments to meet, as well as being in love with the wife of a prominent politician who won't leave her husband for him, Henry is forced to set his own demons to one side to tackle cases that only he can win. The show was described by the Radio Times as an "engaging blend of courtroom drama, suspense, intrigue and humour".

This episode is based on the Helen Smith case, a nurse working in Saudi Arabia who allegedly fell off a balcony in 1979. Her father fought for justice and at one point appeared in a magistrates court for nonpayment of council rates so that he could accuse the person he believed had been responsible for his daughter's murder. I recall that it made the headlines of the news that night on the TV.
Alan Davies and Edward Petherbridge, Father & Son, an absolute delicious, genius casting of the BRIEF series!! Wonderful writing, creating two unique characters sharing a brilliant, sharp legal mind! And, both actors are scoring 100% as gifted & likeable actors. I adore them!!! 🤗🎭💃

A mix of fiction based facts with Alan Davies excellent as the silk with brains.
Yes, I think your right. Can’t be a silk; in other episodes when he is in crown/high court it s clear he is not wearing the right class clobber, i.e. full silk waistcoat and coat, etc. Plus he has been led by his head of chambers in at least one case.
This is great love British series with suspense they are the best .🙏🇳🇱

Great drama but a shocking example of how the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth can be left unheard by a coroner blocking important questions and testimony. Let’s hope the legal system has improved since this was made.

From Puerto Rico. I discovered this series about a week or so ago and I love it.
Movies about legal issues are my fav type of movie. Having a whole TV series dealing with that same subject it's paradise for me.

Of course it had to be the boyfriend. Of course it was alright for that annoying woman to assault Alan Davies by throwing hot spaghetti onto his lap and have the women in the restaurant clap in support of the attacker, and the scene is made to bring a chuckle to anyone watching it (not to me, though). But when the bf hit the victim, it was made to be brutal and to lead to her death. One attack scene is slapstick and admissable; the other one, "typical" of a man hitting a woman in anger. So cliche. It was lovely to see Edward Pretheridge. Alan Davies was better in Jonathon Creek, methinks.

The series is really good but in this episode I could see who the murderer was from almost the beginning. It was the way he looked and was acting. I hate it when I am right on these things. Somewhat spoilt the episode for me.
I've only seen two episodes and both have been about rape. Are all episodes about rape?

Didn't like the ending of this one at all. It ended with a stupid joke, so it wasn't satisfying.
No woman deserves so much attention from a man...She engaged in sexual activities with strangers leaving her boyfriend ....and now he is going to pay for his understandable gelousy....

There is no good reason for women to remove theirs while men don't -- and women weren't pressured to do so until about 1915, around the time that they started to gain some freedom and economic power. Which is how backlash against women's rights *always* proceeds: The closer women get to becoming equal, the more societal pressure is heaped on them to look a certain way (so they waste precious time and energy on that instead of spending time/energy on their professional lives and their inner selves).
AND, she wasn't smelly. AND, plenty of women who go camping shave their legs and pits.
