Adam saying everyone is crybaby's over barrel length...yes it's true in comment section, I wonder how many people in the comments have been shot with a snubbie and the surgeon said "your lucky it wasn't with a 96" barrel"
Well actually when I was a 7th year med student in Central America I once stabilized a patient who was shot 6 times in the abdomen with a .38 special and the surgeon came and said he was lucky not to have been shot with a .357.
My wife took over my Taurus 85 Snubbie and loves it. It is our bedside table gun also. I have full confidence in the 38 for defense. Hopefully I can get to the scatter gun first of course, but if not, the 38 will do just fine.
Great comparison video. Thank you for this. I have an SP101 snub in 357 mag. At the range I fire 38 special. I tried a few .357 mag rounds and found they were way hotter than the 38 special. I may try some +P if I find any! But yes, thank you for this video. I really love my SP101. It is heavy but such a joy to fire. I'm a smallish over 60 y.o. woman and I conceal carry my revolver more than my wee .380. I simply have more confidence in the revolver -- plus it is such a joy to fire and fits my small hands perfectly.
I have a chrome plated 38 S&W 4" barrel from the 70's wooden grips and all. I think it was a policeman special, stole it for $200. Glad to see you give the old 38 some love; mine shoots great and is very accurate. To heavy to carry for me, my sccy 380 carries twice the a!punt with about have the weight. Thanks for the info Paul.
Heck I like 38 special just fine, that's one of the rounds I have done alot of different experiments with using different bullets, powders, and store ammo I tell you i did some hillbilly ballistics testing and came to the conclusion good ol soft lead "brn12" 158 grain moving at 700-800 fps is really the ticket, I found with alot of the gimmick bullets like xtp, hydroshok, gold dot ,ect gold dot did do best of those but still if you got decent expansion the penetration was surprisingly piss poor after toying around with different loads I came to the conclusion 158 soft lead has excellent penetration and pretty uniform musharooming so for 38 thats pretty much my standard load now.
@@joeytunez not a bad idea, my boy and I have considered getting into ammo manufacturing if the opportunity ever presents itself , that sounds like something I would go with

Did you say this pistol normally chambers .38 special+p. A special+p round is to much pressure for a standard .38. Most people inform me not to shoot 38 special+p in my .38 special. So ya, I was wondering what exactly is this pistol your firing these rounds from.. 😊
Mr. Paul, was just out shooting primarily .38 special and .38 special +P in my .357 Ruger LCR yesterday for longer range between 10-25 yards....always good to practice longer ranges, just in case. I generally like having those 125gr Winchester +P JHP around.... Even shot some .357 Magnums in that small gun just to remind myself how those feel. Concur with the .38 special as a carry especially the smaller ones during the summer when it is warm. Thanks, sir.
I agree, if a 38 is not a light weight snub nose there is just no point in using it. Once you go heavier and larger there are better options. I have found very little difference in +P ammo in any caliber. I think the minor gains you get are not worth any extra cost. With all that being said, in my 38 snub nose I find it best to stick with the traditional 158 JSP ammo. You get very similar performance with a heavier bullet and the ammo is more readily available in my area. I think a cool video idea would be for you guys to do a water jug test between a regular 158 gr JSP and the 125 JHP. Fun video
125+p Rem HTP'S hit 938 from a 2" barrel, 5 shot average I saw on Gun Sam's channel. From a 4" barrel they hit 1,013 - only a 76 fps difference. They're semi-jacket-hollow points, which aid with expansion. And I switched from the same flavor in .357. I'm carrying a 22 ounce Smith 649, 2.1 inch barrel. Instead of 13-14 inches in gel from a snubby .357. The +p's hit 16-17 with expansion. I'm more about bullet performance anymore, than energy - for the most part.
Good test. Nothing wrong with a 38, I purchased me a 357 snubbie and will probly hust carry standard velocity 38 in it, since its going to be my handy grab gun in the car for its main purpose.
My wife has that exact same charter arms .38 special except her's is blue, and I have a s&w 642 .38 special. I have not shot the +P yet but after watching this video I'm gonna go get us a box and see how they feel. Thank you
.38 Spcl is a weird little animal. Most loads were developed for a 4" and 6" barrel. Common loads were for a 158 grain projectile back in the day. Today projectiles are lighter and barrel length is anywhere from 2" to 6". Lighter projectiles are used to get speed and manage recoil. Certain fast burning powders are used for short barrel pistols and projectiles commonly used 125-135 grain to give best performance overall. .38 Spcl. still gets the job done. Barney Fife's pistol shot the 158 grain projectile common for .38 spcl of the day.
@timmybmn It would be fun to test hand loads +p for snub nose with different powders, fast burn and slow. to see the difference. like h4227 with max 11 grain vs autocomp max 5 grain for 158gr bullets. that would be nice.
I like the little pink 38. I have the 38 smith. Model 642 and use Winchester plus p in it when i tote it with me. And regular Remington 38 hollow points for the range. And super helpful i got a 38 derringer so i shoot the regular ammo in that to. Thats a hard little gun to hit with. Anyhow goodmorning Mr.Paul and Who-tee-who and thanks for video it was informative boys.
With the JHP having a lighter weight bullet Its going to have a higher velocity, Also different brands of ammunition are going to differ, So if I may say, using the same brand and weight bullets would be an apples to apples comparison. Thanks for posting. 👍 🇺🇸
I think people get too caught up with numbers. Shot placement is the best ticket. A well trained shooter can get the job done with any caliber. I don't want to get hit with a .22 short even. Thanks, y'all take care.
Come on paul what's wrong with pink. Got old kelteck in 380acp for my wife was pink in black. Changed slide back black in left frame pink. I still carry it my self as guy when wants something small. 38+p all ways wonder about how munch power it had some said they get close to 357mag in light loads. Love charter arms make nice little guns. 44 spl sound fun in one or 45 colt.
I like .38 special round, I do beleave its close range protecter. When testing these ammunitions though you should keep it to one brand when going from standard to +p to sho me there is improvement in that ammunition brand. Now with that said, if you do any gel testing, use some good hand loaded wad cutters and see why most of the old timers carried them instead of factory. Properly loaded, a wad cutter has a devistating wound channels at close to or out to 25 yard use. This also holds true in other calibers. The are not the greatest on super heavy clothing as far as penitration, but that is not nessasarlly a must as over penetration in many brands is or can be a problem. A wad cutter is a target load but it will stop an assailant very quickly.
@@HeavyMetalGuns not a problem. I'm a good armchair quarterback. Ding dang that was a fast response. I use to use stacks of wet and dry news print or old phone books as they were plentiful. Its pretty dramatic, a little messy but works better than plain water, I think ? It's just my hillbilly method.
The hollow points slow the bullet down that’s why your getting slower reading plus the box lied to everybody buying that kind of ammo it said it was supposed to be in the mid 900s ! It would be a better test they’re both full metal jacket!
Well with a lower bullet weight you can add more powder to the load its all about a balance for chamber pressure right? Wouldn't it be more compatible with same bullet weight with higher velocity? Also lower bullet weight means less ft/pounds of energy? Just my thoughts but I'm no physisist! Great vid
