@Baxter James You wouldn't want to be shot with any of those calibers. Many PDs used .32 long revolvers for quite a few years before switching to the .38 Special, which became their mainstay for decades. European law enforcement used .32 ACP and .380 ACP from their inception circa 1900 up through WWII. The FBI findings were bogus - concocted to cover up the fact they were completely inept with take-down planning, tactical skills and marksmanship. They didn't want their macho Untouchables image sullied. Read the report about the 1986 Miami-Dade incident in depth. It does quite well with the sequence of events, who did what, who fired what, and when. Pitch the conclusions and recommendations. One of the two serial bank robbers was out of the fight at the outset, no longer a threat, after managing to fire one shotgun round with #6 bird shot that didn't hit anything (or anyone). The other one systematically defeated nearly the entire squad of FBI agents in detail with situational awareness, tactical fire and maneuver, and fire discipline with shot placement. He had learned and honed his skills under fire in Vietnam as an infantryman in a US Army Ranger battalion. The overwhelming number of FBI agents weren't out-gunned, they were completely out-classed tactically by a single man. Count the number of rounds fired by the FBI. It was staggering. The FBI's bogus face-saving conclusions and recommendations spawned the .40 S&W auto. Since then, the FBI has returned to the 9mm Parabellum semi-auto after finding the .40 S&W required too much training to handle properly. The standard FBI agent isn't a "gun guy", he's a "suit".

I professionally carried - and used - over the span of about 25 years - a .357 Magnum, .45 ACP, and 9mm Parabellum. The usual load in the .357 Magnum was .38 Special except for occasional assignments that might need better barrier penetration. Also occasionally used a .380 ACP when small pistol concealment was more important than having the longer 4" or 5" barrel on a full size sidearm. The .32 Long, .32 S&W long and .32 ACP were used effectively for several decades in North America and Europe. A .50 AE or .460 S&W Magnum isn't needed or even appropriate for law enforcement. Nor is a 10mm Auto. Many of the agencies, including the FBI, that adopted the .40 S&W have gone back to the 9mm Parabellum. I'll reiterate: you wouldn't want to be shot center of mass with a .32 Long Colt, a .32 S&W Long, or a .32 ACP. I've never had or used any of those because of the dearth of handguns made in those calibers since 1970, and the cost of ammunition in those calibers is higher than for 9mm Short and 9mm Parabellum. I knew generals (yes, plural) who used a concealed .32 ACP for personal protection Others used a .380 ACP. They were quite effective for that task. A 2018 study I recently read analyzing ~500 crime shootings found wound placement and number made more difference between fatal (~200) and non-fatal (~300) shootings than caliber used. Furthermore, the fatalities didn't have a dozen wounds, they only had about three (statistical average was slightly less than three). If you want one shot, one kill, use a 12 gauge shotgun with buckshot and center of mass placement (#00, #1 or #4, your choice but recommend the latter to reduce unintended collateral damage and injuries). Handguns won't do it reliably, regardless of caliber.
they do not have the case capacity that this one does 327 federal that is. you can not have the versatility of different length case sizes in an auto, like you can in a revolver.
My grandfather had one long as I can remember, I was back then thinking why didnt he have a 38 special, or 357 magnum, he hadshot guns n rifles but that was his only handgun
I wish that the 327 Federal Magnum had more support. It allows a J Frame to carry 6 rounds and put out more power than 9mm. It's an incredibly efficient cartridge.
The 32 long had a great survival boost from its common use in three gun bullseye matches. Very accurate round, and chosen by many for the "any centerfire" stages. Its proven itself many times over. The 327 Federal is a high performance cartridge, and you can shoot 32 H&R, S&W 32 long, and S&W 32 short as well. Don't sell it short.
@BWM - Uh, you shouldn't be saying that. That is, the "any shelf in America" part. I can pick up 44 Special, 45 Colt, 32/20, 32 acp, 32 long, 38 Colt, 38 Special - all 50's or before cartridges - off the shelf here in America. I will grant you that the big box stores won't typically have them on the shelves, but the "mom and pop" stores will keep their locals provided for.

The .32 was/is a great self defense round. My grandpa was a constable in Tenn., he dispatched a armed bad guy with his pocket revolver chambered in a .32 S&W.
@gilroy none Yes. And .32 ACP does too .380 is pretty widely regarded as an unpleasant round to shoot because of it's snappy nature and you're not getting any more power in a practical sense .380 is a round for people who don't know any better
I have always carried a 5 shot snub nose. I may have to start carrying a handgun that holds a minimum of 17 in the mag with 7 extra mags. Just yesterday, I ran into Bigfoot, and shot all 5 into its head, and he still would have killed me if that low flying UFO had not beamed him back up to the spaceship!

I am a disabled veteran and I have issues with my good right hand. I started carrying .32 caliber handguns years ago for exactly the reasons you cite - soft recoil and excellent accuracy. My current concealed carry revolver is a S&W Airlight. I chose an Aitlight model because I want an exterior hammer. Trust me, I use it. I am very satisfied with the revolver. Because it is fun to shoot, I have a lot of range time with it, hence a lot of practice. This is where the accuracy issue comes in. I hope I never have to use it. But I am armed and confident.
Prior to retirement, as a cop with, as my ortho put it, "an impressive amount of arthritis," I sought out and bought a S&W 30-1 J-frame in .32 S&W Long. It's loaded with 115 gr hard cast LFP rounds that tested well in water jugs (they turn sideways almost immediately ... lacking "volunteers" that's the best test I had). The company that made my ammo is out of business but Buffalo Bore has what seems an identical loading. Recoil is super light. With all other factory .32 S&W Long ammo recoil is hardly noticeable even on days when my hands are protesting every action. Also, while of course not hearing safe, they are a lot less loud than any other rounds I've shot through small revolvers. Arti pain isn't nearly so bad now (usually) so I have other, "more powerful" carry options but that little J-frame finds its way into my pocket or waistband fairly often still. I keep looking for a good deal on an air weight in .32 H&R but I'm not holding my breath. Anyway, thanks for the this video!
I bought a 32 H&R charters arms off of sportsman guide this past year its the lightest gun I own and not expensive, right now i checked they just had the lavender lady model, but they carry the brushed stainless like i bought from time to time

@@chrissizemore745 Not the 30-1. I have an i-frame Smith (.32 hand-ejector). IIRC, they were later branded the Model 30 when S&W went to model numbers. Then, when they were determined to chamber the revolver in .38, they increased the size to the J-frame, rebranding the now J-frame model 30 as the 30-1. FWIW, the 30-2 is exactly the same gun, only with a square butt, making the 30-1 & 30-2 the only S&A models to use a different model number just to differentiate the grip. I wish they'd bring back the I frame AND reintroduce the M frame "Ladysmith" .22 ... only less delicate.
Hello, just ran across your post here and found it interesting, as I am a retired cop, and as a back-up piece while serving in Patrol, I packed a .32 also. Mine was purchased in the 70's, it is a Charter Arms Undercoverette, a six-shot .32 snubby. At the time of purchase I was actually looking for a .38 Special Undercover, none was available, but the Undercoverette was. This blue steel snub nose was but 16oz. and I was able to pack it without much trouble or aggravation, a real issue with a back-up piece. Well, from the 1970's at purchase time unto 2017, I carried this Undercoverette for the duration of my career. In a ankle-holster, or inside my kevlar in a secure pocket. I qualified with this arm yearly, per state mandate, and you can just imagine my little Charter Arms had the tell-tale "cop-wear" look about it. Carried much and shot little. The durability of my Undercoverette was astounding. That little gun was on my person in these "hot-as-hell" Georgia summers, rare cold days, even rarer snow days, and rain downpours. Exposed to the elements, my body sweat, and sometimes getting knocked about in those awful hand-to-hand combat days with thugs and other varmints. When I retired, my CA had been with me, on my body, for over 40-years, that is a testimony to the durability of my Charter Arms! I was keen on keeping this back-up piece cleaned and oiled because of the extreme wear and exposure factors my Undercoverette went through everyday O worked, including off duty service. The .32 Long Round is a decent "get-the-hell" off me round, and I had six rounds to make it happen. A life insurance policy for a beat cop, on and off duty. I kept the small walnut grip panels on to reduce the size variance that accompanies larger grips. This was a back-up and hide-out piece. I thank the Good Lord that I never had to go to it, but it was comforting me to have that life insurance as a last resort. Sorry for the length.
Love going back to these older videos. I have recently decided to carry a lower velocity 158gr wadcutter in my 357mag, and it is encouraging to see that even much lighter bullets at lower velocity are capable penetrators.
After shooting .357 out of a snub I was really turned off on the idea of a carry snub. But this 327 sounds like the answer I have been looking for. Plus getting 6 shots instead of 5 is fantastic.
Charter arms has been making 32 H&R snubbies for years and are now coming out with a 7 shot with a 3" barrel with fiber optic front sight. It's on my wish list already. My favorite carry gun is my smith .32 mag airweight.
Appreciate your coverage of this caliber. I bought my wife a .32 H&R magnum because she has difficulty working the slide on my CZ 75 9mm. As mentioned, ammo is a drawback -- expensive and tough to find. I'm reloading the .32 Long cases for target shooting, and keep mags in the revolver for home defense.
Why did I watch this video? Now I need a ruger lcr in 327 Federal Magnum. The versatility of the pistol that shoots that round is great. Plus an extra round. Take my money.
#StoryTime: I think it's a sweet little gun! I'm in NW Ohio & called multiple shops around me and looked online to no avail; The last shop I called tho looked online for me & found one on GunBroker.com, I think it was the only one, and it was a pretty penny; The other LCR's (new) around here are about $480, but when all was said & done I placed my purchase at $591 (Originally $550, but they get you with $15 'not paid in cash discount' charge that I still dont understand, plus shipping) and later when I went to pick up my revolver, there were a few different S&W's in the case for half that price, and their ammo is quite cheaper too; But after watching all the info on here I decided it would be a great first gun, with more manageable recoil than a .38, and an extra round? I like it. Pricey but I was able to afford it so I'm happy; Got some 32 Long & .327 Mag ammo & plan on taking it to the range for the first time tomorrow! PS I was originally looking at the NAA Mini Revolvers in .22 Mag, so glad I learned about this LCR, it's a step up for sure! I think I'll keep it forever as long as they keep making good ammo!

Great video, from 1988 to 2018 I was a cop, my duty gun was a S&W model 586 - 4" and my back up was a S&W model 64 - 2". I saw this video before and was at the range two weeks ago, the guy next to me had a Charter arms's Professional 32 H&R mag. 7 shot , with a 3'' barrel. YOU were right no-kick, so I picked one up, very easy to get the second shot right where I placed the first. Great round for people who are older or have bad hands. Thanks again for the video. Btw I kept my REVOLVERS when in 1992 Chicago went to AUTOS, In 2018 I was one of 40 , officers that still had the wheel guns . Grand father in.

my grandpa has my great grandpas 32acp and its an awesome little target gun, he accidentally bought 5 boxed of 32 H&R one time and then just decided to get a revolver to shoot it. 32 is slowly becoming one of my favorite range guns and ive been considering using it as a summer conceal.

My wife inherited her dad's Colt Detective Special, chambered in 32CNP. I sent it back to the Colt Custom Shop and they refurbished it to NIB condition and smoothed out the trigger. She loves it so I'm the hero of the story! Yeah, 32's aren't bear loads but I wouldn't want one of them coming my direction.
Love my .327. It’s a very underrated round, but it’s got some serious punch. Wish it would gain more popularity. And one extra round is very important in a small snub nose like this. I believe you get the best of every world with this round. Would highly recommend trying one if you are interested in one.
I thought about a 327 lcr but the ammo availability, selection and price moved me to get the 357 version i can literally go anywhere and get ammo for it that's a must for any firearm thats more than a range toy. Personally If you want more capacity get a 686+ or a semi auto.
I feel like an affordable lever-action carbine paired with a nice mid-size revolver both chambered in .327 FM would be damn nice for medium game hunting or even home defense

I have a S&W model 30 in 32 S&W long. I carried it as a backup gun on duty and my late wife had it in here kitchen Towle drawer fo 20 yrs its still there today.
I've been singing the praises of the LCR 327 since I first heard of it and got one in my hand. Can't beat the efficiency and simplicity of that platform. Really looking forward to those gel tests! Thanks Chris.
A gun in any caliber is better than no gun. That being said about ten years ago in my area there was a serial killer preying on the homeless in a nearby city. One of his victims had a Bersa Thunder in 380 and got off several shots before the attacker killed him. The attacker was found several days later with three rounds in his body, two in the main body mass one in an arm. He was seeking medical treatment at a local hospital but the wounds had sealed up. This was during summer and the attacker, although 6’6” and 230lbs, was walking around and in little pain and also no drugs in his system. So again better than nothing but still didn’t stop the attack.
I've been pondering adding a .327 revolver primarily because of all the cartridges it cover in just one gun, but an ultralite in .32 H&R sounds like a near perfect balance of performance & felt recoil. Would be interesting if Ruger released a 3" LCR in .327, however. I have one in .38 and like its size with a boot grip as I can conceal it fairly easily while benefiting from the longer sight radius and velocity. A .327 version may gain enough weight to handle the lighter Federal Magnum loads decently well and, if not, .32 H&R should feel even softer than from the 2" LCR. Then again, while harder to carry, I guess a 4" SP-101 would be a pretty nice .327 Federal Magnum revolver as well.
The .32 ACP also works in these guns, which is probably the cheapest ammo for practice as it is everywhere. It could even be used for defense in a pinch. I have the 4 inch SP101. I like to load the .327 cartridge (which has a very high pressure limit) near max pressure with fast pistol powders like Titegroup. Yes the velocity is somewhat less than using slow pistol powders, but it is still fast enough to easily get good bullet expansion and it turns the gun into a pussycat to shoot, since muzzle blast is much reduced.
My Dad was in his late teens in the twenties, and it was common for guys his age to carry a snub revolver. He came across a 32 short, make unknown, and bought it. Took it home, fired it at an oak tree around thirty feet away. He felt something strike his belt buckle. It was the lead slug he had fired at the tree. Went back to town the next day and traded it for a 38 snub of some flavor. He wanted something that wouldn't bounce off and hurt him. Not to say the 32 H&R or the 327 Federal would be a bad choice now days, but ammo availably could be a big issue. Don't I recall someone making a snub in 9mm? That might be a good choice with 115-124 +P ammo.
Glad to see the 32 getting the respect it deserves. I have CHL (Ohio) carried a S&W model 332 in a pocket holster for the past several years. Everything you said about the H&R Mganum is right on. 6 rounds and it literally disappears in my pocket. Recoil is definitely light, though snappy.

I have my grandfather’s Colt Detective Special in .32 long. He bought it in the late 40’s. Still in the original box. He kept it in his nightstand. Mint condition. Less than 500 rounds have gone through it. A sweet shooter.
I like the LCR in 9mm. It is 17 oz. It uses moon clips so loading and unloading are fast. Full length ejection also. The ammo selection is abundant and inexpensive. The hollow point bullets open as well as they do in a compact semiauto. The cartridge is more powerful than a 38 and less than a 357. It's somewhat exciting to shoot in this small revolver but with good grips it's controllable and fast. Revolvers have the advantage up very close. Within hands on distance they are better suited than a semi because they won't go out of battery. You can shove the muzzle up against a body and the gun will function just fine. I believe the Ruger LCR in 9mm is the ideal backup gun.
Hand loaders have been loading single aught buckshot as a round ball 'casual plinking' or practice round. Very economical way to practice. Also former NRA magazine editor and all around hand loading guru Ed Harris made up a couple of single shot rifles for 32 Long and 32 Mag. If you are interested in this caliber you should search out those articles on the internet. Very informative of the potential these rounds offer.
thanks for making this video! I have been telling people for years that the .32 smith and Wesson long is a VERY Underrated round for self defense. In our great grandparents day .32 revolvers and autos were looked upon as very capable for self defense. I own two revolvers both with 3 inch barrels one is a smith model 30 the other a Rossi model 76 stainless with pachmayr grips I do NOT feel undergunned with either. Wadcutters are what I use both Buffalo bore and S&B as well as magtech. I also have two P32 kel-tecs. I also reload and when I do buy ammo I buy in quantity so ammo is not as much an issue for me. In the case of the .32 autos I use HOT European Ball!
Just bought a Charter Arms Undercoverette in .32 H&R Mag, for use with .32 S&W Long Wadcutters for my wife. Love the accuracy and low recoil of the .32 S&W Long.
I’ve been reading a lot of the Parker novels by Richard Stark. I notice that just about every time the protagonist needs a gun he goes with the smallest possible, especially .32 revolvers. I just finished one where a police captain Carries a SW model 30 snub. I’m thinking of getting one myself.
Great survey of an under-appreciated caliber! About 1991 I snapped up a .32 H&R Magnum S&W 632 Airweight Centennial revolver because it had a GOOD GAP (unlike most S&W snubby revolvers of these later years.) It was a THREE-Inch stainless barrel on an aluminum frame, with a buttery trigger! It also came with that magnificent "Uncle Mike's Combat Grip," the one that is shaped like a banana and allows slip-proof holsterless IWB carry. I knew what I was looking for---and there it was. It shot great and was very controllable, so I stocked up on LOTS of .32 H&R Mag ammo, suspecting that the caliber would not catch on. It has been my daily carry weapon since then, showing NO WEAR at all except to the rubber grip. The point of writing all this is to recommend Buffalo Bore .32 Mag ammo, which might as well be called +P. It is great stuff and very HOT, yet the revolver shows absolutely no damage from limited use of that loading. And no, I will never sell it!...……………………………...elsullo
Charter Arms still produces a 5 shot 32 H&R Magnum 2 inch snub called the Undercoverette. It’s made in a 16 oz stainless frame version and a 12 oz alloy model. It’s fun to shoot, has a very mild recoil, and is a viable self defense caliber.
Back in the 1960's my mother was a secretary with the probate court in Macon,Ga. Georgia was one of the first States to issue concealed weapons permits. They told her to go to a local gun store that sold to the male police officers, and female meter maids. She bought a Smith and Wesson, model 31, in .32 S&W long with a four inch barrel. This was what the meter maids carried. We still have her old revolver. Recoil is light, and accuracy is superb.
I love these comparative videos. Another comparative video that I would like to see is the ballistics and felt recoil difference between 9 mm revolvers and .38 spl revolvers (and varying the barrel length to see if MAC's claim that 9mm is potentially a better caliber for snub nose revolvers). Having both the Charter Arms Pitbull 9mm revolver and the Taurus M905 I can tell you this; In my experience and perspective from shooting my bunch of J frames with 38+P many hundreds of rounds, I liken the felt recoil of a regular Rem 115g FMJ & JHP similar to a strong 38+P load through a J frame. Very similar to a Fed 158g 38+P LSWCHP labeled 'high velocity' in a J size. A snap, but VERY manageable for me and in both my 9 revolvers are as accurate as I am at 15 paces. Again, your mileage may vary. Be safe, shoot and have fun.
@@enb3810 Taurus makes an excellent all steel snubby in 9mm. I love mine and feel the recoil is similar to a .38spcl, but ammo is cheaper by a mile. Also uses moon clips for fast reloading.
I'm no gun guru, but I love this caliber more than any other. Well 327 federal anyways. Ive yet to fire one out of a stubby, but out of my redhawk (correct me if I've got the actions wrong on the redhawk and the Blackhawk swapped) and my sp101. As far as Paul goes, he tends to go for wide audience calibers, and sadly the 32 doesn't have a wide audience. Thank you so much lucky gunner crew for doing this video
Great video, as usual! I have two 327s, an LCRx (exposed hammer) for my wife's bedroom gun, and an LCR (hidden hammer) for my favorite pocket gun. I love these guns. 32 Long for general shooting at the range, and 32 Mag for defense (it's the sweet spot of the 4 choices, but is very expensive). I rarely shoot the 327 Mag cartridge due to recoil, slow follow-up, and noise.

My grandfather taught me pistol skills and safety on an old smith & wesson police model with a 6 or 7 inch barrel, it was chambered in the new police load.Easy enough on the hands and ears for youngsters, accurate enough to shoot bottle caps at 35 -40 feet.
I was seriously considering a .327-chambered LCR for my wife, who has become more recoil sensitive over the years due to a health condition. Sadly, the lack of ammunition availability locally has swayed me away from this. It's shame, as the versatility of the theoretical .32 offerings is quite alluring.
Have your wife practice with the 32 Longs which aren't too bad to find, and then load the H&R's in for her self defense. Not that loud and 38 special power and low recoil. So you order 5 boxes off the internet for ammo you won't use often. I like to think the caliber may be catching on, so hopefully more ammo choices will be available.
I disagree with the idea of practicing with a light ammo and carrying a magnum. Just load her up with 32 wadcutters. They cut deep and aren't too expensive.
LoneWanderer360 Gotta practice with your carry ammo occasionally. I hate when people practice with target loads but never shoot the ammo that might actually save their life. You’d be surprised how much difference there can be between target ammo and self defense ammo.
As a result of this video, I bought an LCR and an LCRx in .327 Federal Magnum when I found .327 Federal Magnum ammo on my local gun store shelf. Chris is correct. The .32 is best for light weight revolvers. Perhaps Lucky Gunner can stock more of it. I would buy it.

I'll give you a thumbs up for the points you made and the fact that you addressed the big "yeah but". That extra round is nice, but at this stage it is almost just hypothetical. There are also hypothetical lower recoil options for the 38/357 snubbies. These have plenty of projectiles available. They just don't have a lot of proper factory support. However, reloading is another matter. I speak of the 38 Short Colt and 38 Long Colt options. Brass is cheap and they will take the .357" diameter bullets along with lighter powder charges to offer good ballistics with less recoil. The other thing missing is a good source of reload data so that these cases can be loaded to .38 Spl +P potential (and even .357 Magnum which essentially gives you a 9x19mm round in a rimmed case for the Short Colt).
I have a .32 WWII era Walther PPK and a South American .32 revolver. The revolver has a puma logo and is delightfully accurate. It belonged to a grandfather and was loaded with shots hello when I got it. Both have been carry guns. Thanks for this video!
You shouldn’t have to worry about stopping power with cartridges 32auto and up if you practice proper shot placement, repeatable accuracy, and situational awareness. 32 auto was a fairly standard pistol cartridge up until wwii and saw military and police service with most of the prominent world powers during wwi. Remember that the change to higher capacity and higher stopping power small arms was mostly due to the lack of marksmanship in the drafted units at the time, leading to small arms that take drastically less training to become effective with.
Watched this video at least a dozen times. The presentation and delivery is very good. As someone who likes the smaller rounds this is a great video. I re-qualified my CC license with an LCR 327 with 32h&r mag rounds. It was a pussycat! Accurate and little to no recoil. Afraid my days with .357’s and probably 9mm are behind me.
Thank you for doing this video comparison. I have been fascinated with the .327 Federal Magnum for quite some time. Since Ruger has made a GP100 with seven rounds of .357 mag, I have been bugging them to release the same revolver with eight rounds of .327 mag with the promise to purchase at least one upon announcement. Your video confirms what I have been thinking for quite some time. I admit it is hard to overcome the common availability of the .38/.357 but hopefully more videos like this will get the general public excited about this round.
Yeah. I never would have considered oddball or orphan calibers prior to becoming a reloader. After becoming a bullet caster, I now almost look for the weird stuff. All the guns that sell under price because you can't find ammo are nothing special for me to make ammo for.

Both my wife and I now carry Ruger LCRx 327s. She carries her's with Hornady 32 H&R Magnum ammo and I carry mine with 327 Federal 85 grain Hydra-Shok reduced recoil. For range time, I reload my 327 cases to maximum 32 H&R Magnum capacity. Perfect plinking round for my SP101 327 and a perfect practice round for our LCRx 327s.

With the .327 Fed being a ballistic champ of the .32 'division' I can't figure why Charter chose not to produce a six round revolver (see the discontinued Patriot of 2012 ) . With the metallurgy available, the craftsmen there could of produced an 'ultra-compact' version of its Bulldog design in a five shooter. Now that would be an interesting concealed carry weapon.
Thank you for presenting a fair and balanced overview of the .32 family of cartridges. My S&W 31-1 has served me well over the last 30 years when I have chosen to carry it. It is not my EDC gun, but in the summer, it beats carrying my HK VP9 when I am dressing lightly. FWIW, I do carry handloads in it and I get the most from the .32 Long cartridge that I can.
Thanks in large part to this video, I purchased an LCR 327 Federal. I've been shooting for 50 years, have owned many guns, and this is one of the best purchases I've ever made! So, THANK YOU! A bonus is, I'm taking your advice concerning reloading due to the potential unpredictable availability of the .32. So, I'm getting back into reloading just because of this round. I've fired everything through it so far, except for the .327 Magnum. The .32 H&R Magnum was very tame in its perceived recoil, so if the .327 proves too much, I'll be very happy carrying the gun with the H&Rs. I might even load the first two rounds in H&R and the third one the .327. This is, by far, one of the best gun channels on the web. Thanks again for your wonderful, informative videos. Some years ago at our National Firearms Unit I was corrected by ammo manufactures when I used the term, “SAAMI Specs.” They said that SAAMI doesn’t write specifications, but writes recommendations. Seems that SAAMI recommendations are not binding, just recommendations in regards to chamber pressures.

I tried to embrace the 32. Snubby and ended up going to a 6 shot 38 snubby. A all steel 6-shot 38 still carries and shoots nice for me. I have a S&W model 10 2" and a Taurus 856
My first handgun was a US Revolver Company top break in .32 S&W (short variety). It has the 5.5 inch barrel and a blued finish, and even today is a great shooter, 102 years later. I absolutely love it.
r73 h&r .32 mag, bought it used 4 years ago. love it. practice with it often, one would not want to be on the other side of me threatening the safety of me or mine. recently had to downsize my fairly large holdings of firearms kept, sks, cz bolt action (same cal.), 12 guage ted williams with adj. choke, 1911 commander, and of course the aforementioned r73. this was for financial reasons. selling the safe queens was the best decision i ever made. 2 good shtf guns, 2 good hunting guns, and a good concealed carry.
I bought my wife a S&W 332 Centennial in .32 H&R Magnum around 2001-2002. 6 shots. Nice little revolver and does not kick as much as a .38. They seem to be bringing a lot of money now. It is her CC handgun. There was a time when the cartridge was quite popular for handgun metallic silhouette shooting, it had the power to reliably knock down ram targets and had much less recoil than .357 magnum.
I purchased a Ruger LCR in 327 Federal Magnum a few years ago and have been very pleased. Loaded with Buffalo Bore's 130 grain hard cast rounds, it's a very viable option as a light weight carry piece. Thanks very much for posting.

@Baxter James You wouldn't want to be shot with any of those calibers. Many PDs used .32 long revolvers for quite a few years before switching to the .38 Special, which became their mainstay for decades. European law enforcement used .32 ACP and .380 ACP from their inception circa 1900 up through WWII. The FBI findings were bogus - concocted to cover up the fact they were completely inept with take-down planning, tactical skills and marksmanship. They didn't want their macho Untouchables image sullied. Read the report about the 1986 Miami-Dade incident in depth. It does quite well with the sequence of events, who did what, who fired what, and when. Pitch the conclusions and recommendations. One of the two serial bank robbers was out of the fight at the outset, no longer a threat, after managing to fire one shotgun round with #6 bird shot that didn't hit anything (or anyone). The other one systematically defeated nearly the entire squad of FBI agents in detail with situational awareness, tactical fire and maneuver, and fire discipline with shot placement. He had learned and honed his skills under fire in Vietnam as an infantryman in a US Army Ranger battalion. The overwhelming number of FBI agents weren't out-gunned, they were completely out-classed tactically by a single man. Count the number of rounds fired by the FBI. It was staggering. The FBI's bogus face-saving conclusions and recommendations spawned the .40 S&W auto. Since then, the FBI has returned to the 9mm Parabellum semi-auto after finding the .40 S&W required too much training to handle properly. The standard FBI agent isn't a "gun guy", he's a "suit".

I professionally carried - and used - over the span of about 25 years - a .357 Magnum, .45 ACP, and 9mm Parabellum. The usual load in the .357 Magnum was .38 Special except for occasional assignments that might need better barrier penetration. Also occasionally used a .380 ACP when small pistol concealment was more important than having the longer 4" or 5" barrel on a full size sidearm. The .32 Long, .32 S&W long and .32 ACP were used effectively for several decades in North America and Europe. A .50 AE or .460 S&W Magnum isn't needed or even appropriate for law enforcement. Nor is a 10mm Auto. Many of the agencies, including the FBI, that adopted the .40 S&W have gone back to the 9mm Parabellum. I'll reiterate: you wouldn't want to be shot center of mass with a .32 Long Colt, a .32 S&W Long, or a .32 ACP. I've never had or used any of those because of the dearth of handguns made in those calibers since 1970, and the cost of ammunition in those calibers is higher than for 9mm Short and 9mm Parabellum. I knew generals (yes, plural) who used a concealed .32 ACP for personal protection Others used a .380 ACP. They were quite effective for that task. A 2018 study I recently read analyzing ~500 crime shootings found wound placement and number made more difference between fatal (~200) and non-fatal (~300) shootings than caliber used. Furthermore, the fatalities didn't have a dozen wounds, they only had about three (statistical average was slightly less than three). If you want one shot, one kill, use a 12 gauge shotgun with buckshot and center of mass placement (#00, #1 or #4, your choice but recommend the latter to reduce unintended collateral damage and injuries). Handguns won't do it reliably, regardless of caliber.
they do not have the case capacity that this one does 327 federal that is. you can not have the versatility of different length case sizes in an auto, like you can in a revolver.

I wish that the 327 Federal Magnum had more support. It allows a J Frame to carry 6 rounds and put out more power than 9mm. It's an incredibly efficient cartridge.
Yeah, I never really thought about it, but after saying this, I can see it being a great choice for a 6 shot airweight S&W.
Unfortunately S&W only made 1 gun in .327 and it was a rather large 4" J-frame. They really needed to do a 442/642 style snubbie.

Here in Brazil the .32 S&W long was so widely sold since the 50ths that we still find ammunition in the stores.
The 32 long had a great survival boost from its common use in three gun bullseye matches. Very accurate round, and chosen by many for the "any centerfire" stages. Its proven itself many times over. The 327 Federal is a high performance cartridge, and you can shoot 32 H&R, S&W 32 long, and S&W 32 short as well. Don't sell it short.
@BWM - Uh, you shouldn't be saying that. That is, the "any shelf in America" part. I can pick up 44 Special, 45 Colt, 32/20, 32 acp, 32 long, 38 Colt, 38 Special - all 50's or before cartridges - off the shelf here in America.
I will grant you that the big box stores won't typically have them on the shelves, but the "mom and pop" stores will keep their locals provided for.

Currently, there are still 2 problems on our way to freedom, legally speaking.
1 - National gun industry is still under the heavy state watch and tutelage. meaning that firearm prices are massively inflated
2 - Constant threat from the left wing congress and supreme courts, along with a few generals in the army, who oppose freedom to rollback our progress, as it still isnt injected in the constitution.
The .32 was/is a great self defense round. My grandpa was a constable in Tenn., he dispatched a armed bad guy with his pocket revolver chambered in a .32 S&W.
Moral of the story: Everyone buy a firearm chambered in .327 and lets make it more popular

I have always carried a 5 shot snub nose. I may have to start carrying a handgun that holds a minimum of 17 in the mag with 7 extra mags. Just yesterday, I ran into Bigfoot, and shot all 5 into its head, and he still would have killed me if that low flying UFO had not beamed him back up to the spaceship!

I am a disabled veteran and I have issues with my good right hand. I started carrying .32 caliber handguns years ago for exactly the reasons you cite - soft recoil and excellent accuracy. My current concealed carry revolver is a S&W Airlight. I chose an Aitlight model because I want an exterior hammer. Trust me, I use it. I am very satisfied with the revolver. Because it is fun to shoot, I have a lot of range time with it, hence a lot of practice. This is where the accuracy issue comes in. I hope I never have to use it. But I am armed and confident.

Prior to retirement, as a cop with, as my ortho put it, "an impressive amount of arthritis," I sought out and bought a S&W 30-1 J-frame in .32 S&W Long. It's loaded with 115 gr hard cast LFP rounds that tested well in water jugs (they turn sideways almost immediately ... lacking "volunteers" that's the best test I had). The company that made my ammo is out of business but Buffalo Bore has what seems an identical loading. Recoil is super light. With all other factory .32 S&W Long ammo recoil is hardly noticeable even on days when my hands are protesting every action. Also, while of course not hearing safe, they are a lot less loud than any other rounds I've shot through small revolvers. Arti pain isn't nearly so bad now (usually) so I have other, "more powerful" carry options but that little J-frame finds its way into my pocket or waistband fairly often still. I keep looking for a good deal on an air weight in .32 H&R but I'm not holding my breath. Anyway, thanks for the this video!
I bought a 32 H&R charters arms off of sportsman guide this past year its the lightest gun I own and not expensive, right now i checked they just had the lavender lady model, but they carry the brushed stainless like i bought from time to time

@@chrissizemore745 Not the 30-1. I have an i-frame Smith (.32 hand-ejector). IIRC, they were later branded the Model 30 when S&W went to model numbers. Then, when they were determined to chamber the revolver in .38, they increased the size to the J-frame, rebranding the now J-frame model 30 as the 30-1.
FWIW, the 30-2 is exactly the same gun, only with a square butt, making the 30-1 & 30-2 the only S&A models to use a different model number just to differentiate the grip.
I wish they'd bring back the I frame AND reintroduce the M frame "Ladysmith" .22 ... only less delicate.
Hello, just ran across your post here and found it interesting, as I am a retired cop, and as a back-up piece while serving in Patrol, I packed a .32 also. Mine was purchased in the 70's, it is a Charter Arms Undercoverette, a six-shot .32 snubby. At the time of purchase I was actually looking for a .38 Special Undercover, none was available, but the Undercoverette was. This blue steel snub nose was but 16oz. and I was able to pack it without much trouble or aggravation, a real issue with a back-up piece. Well, from the 1970's at purchase time unto 2017, I carried this Undercoverette for the duration of my career. In a ankle-holster, or inside my kevlar in a secure pocket. I qualified with this arm yearly, per state mandate, and you can just imagine my little Charter Arms had the tell-tale "cop-wear" look about it. Carried much and shot little. The durability of my Undercoverette was astounding. That little gun was on my person in these "hot-as-hell" Georgia summers, rare cold days, even rarer snow days, and rain downpours. Exposed to the elements, my body sweat, and sometimes getting knocked about in those awful hand-to-hand combat days with thugs and other varmints. When I retired, my CA had been with me, on my body, for over 40-years, that is a testimony to the durability of my Charter Arms! I was keen on keeping this back-up piece cleaned and oiled because of the extreme wear and exposure factors my Undercoverette went through everyday O worked, including off duty service. The .32 Long Round is a decent "get-the-hell" off me round, and I had six rounds to make it happen. A life insurance policy for a beat cop, on and off duty. I kept the small walnut grip panels on to reduce the size variance that accompanies larger grips. This was a back-up and hide-out piece. I thank the Good Lord that I never had to go to it, but it was comforting me to have that life insurance as a last resort. Sorry for the length.
Love going back to these older videos. I have recently decided to carry a lower velocity 158gr wadcutter in my 357mag, and it is encouraging to see that even much lighter bullets at lower velocity are capable penetrators.
After shooting .357 out of a snub I was really turned off on the idea of a carry snub. But this 327 sounds like the answer I have been looking for. Plus getting 6 shots instead of 5 is fantastic.
Charter arms has been making 32 H&R snubbies for years and are now coming out with a 7 shot with a 3" barrel with fiber optic front sight. It's on my wish list already. My favorite carry gun is my smith .32 mag airweight.
Appreciate your coverage of this caliber. I bought my wife a .32 H&R magnum because she has difficulty working the slide on my CZ 75 9mm. As mentioned, ammo is a drawback -- expensive and tough to find. I'm reloading the .32 Long cases for target shooting, and keep mags in the revolver for home defense.
Why did I watch this video? Now I need a ruger lcr in 327 Federal Magnum. The versatility of the pistol that shoots that round is great. Plus an extra round. Take my money.
#StoryTime: I think it's a sweet little gun! I'm in NW Ohio & called multiple shops around me and looked online to no avail; The last shop I called tho looked online for me & found one on GunBroker.com, I think it was the only one, and it was a pretty penny; The other LCR's (new) around here are about $480, but when all was said & done I placed my purchase at $591 (Originally $550, but they get you with $15 'not paid in cash discount' charge that I still dont understand, plus shipping) and later when I went to pick up my revolver, there were a few different S&W's in the case for half that price, and their ammo is quite cheaper too; But after watching all the info on here I decided it would be a great first gun, with more manageable recoil than a .38, and an extra round? I like it. Pricey but I was able to afford it so I'm happy; Got some 32 Long & .327 Mag ammo & plan on taking it to the range for the first time tomorrow!
PS I was originally looking at the NAA Mini Revolvers in .22 Mag, so glad I learned about this LCR, it's a step up for sure! I think I'll keep it forever as long as they keep making good ammo!

Great video, from 1988 to 2018 I was a cop, my duty gun was a S&W model 586 - 4" and my back up was a S&W model 64 - 2". I saw this video before and was at the range two weeks ago, the guy next to me had a Charter arms's Professional 32 H&R mag. 7 shot , with a 3'' barrel. YOU were right no-kick, so I picked one up, very easy to get the second shot right where I placed the first. Great round for people who are older or have bad hands. Thanks again for the video. Btw I kept my REVOLVERS when in 1992 Chicago went to AUTOS, In 2018 I was one of 40 , officers that still had the wheel guns . Grand father in.

my grandpa has my great grandpas 32acp and its an awesome little target gun, he accidentally bought 5 boxed of 32 H&R one time and then just decided to get a revolver to shoot it. 32 is slowly becoming one of my favorite range guns and ive been considering using it as a summer conceal.

My wife inherited her dad's Colt Detective Special, chambered in 32CNP. I sent it back to the Colt Custom Shop and they refurbished it to NIB condition and smoothed out the trigger. She loves it so I'm the hero of the story!

Love my .327. It’s a very underrated round, but it’s got some serious punch. Wish it would gain more popularity. And one extra round is very important in a small snub nose like this. I believe you get the best of every world with this round. Would highly recommend trying one if you are interested in one.
My thought would be with the added control is the extra round justified and really that big a deal. Just tossing that out there

Kevin Quarry the noise in a full .327 load is more like a very hot .38. It’s not as bad as a .357 by no means, but it is still very loud.
I thought about a 327 lcr but the ammo availability, selection and price moved me to get the 357 version i can literally go anywhere and get ammo for it that's a must for any firearm thats more than a range toy. Personally If you want more capacity get a 686+ or a semi auto.

A gun in any caliber is better than no gun. That being said about ten years ago in my area there was a serial killer preying on the homeless in a nearby city. One of his victims had a Bersa Thunder in 380 and got off several shots before the attacker killed him. The attacker was found several days later with three rounds in his body, two in the main body mass one in an arm. He was seeking medical treatment at a local hospital but the wounds had sealed up. I've been pondering adding a .327 revolver primarily because of all the cartridges it cover in just one gun, but an ultralite in .32 H&R sounds like a near perfect balance of performance & felt recoil.
Would be interesting if Ruger released a 3" LCR in .327, however. I have one in .38 and like its size with a boot grip as I can conceal it fairly easily while benefiting from the longer sight radius and velocity. A .327 version may gain enough weight to handle the lighter Federal Magnum loads decently well and, if not, .32 H&R should feel even softer than from the 2" LCR. Then again, while harder to carry, I guess a 4" SP-101 would be a pretty nice .327 Federal Magnum revolver as well.
I agrre and I contacted Rugers CEO and said a THREE INCH LCR would be the ticket.
The .32 ACP also works in these guns, which is probably the cheapest ammo for practice as it is everywhere. It could even be used for defense in a pinch. I have the 4 inch SP101. I like to load the .327 cartridge (which has a very high pressure limit) near max pressure with fast pistol powders like Titegroup. Yes the velocity is somewhat less than using slow pistol powders, but it is still fast enough to easily get good bullet expansion and it turns the gun into a pussycat to shoot, since muzzle blast is much reduced.
My Dad was in his late teens in the twenties, and it was common for guys his age to carry a snub revolver. He came across a 32 short, make unknown, and bought it. Took it home, fired it at an oak tree around thirty feet away. He felt something strike his belt buckle. It was the lead slug he had fired at the tree. Went back to town the next day and traded it for a 38 snub of some flavor. He wanted something that wouldn't bounce off and hurt him. Not to say the 32 H&R or the 327 Federal would be a bad choice now days, but ammo availably could be a big issue. Don't I recall someone making a snub in 9mm? That might be a good choice with 115-124 +P ammo.

Glad to see the 32 getting the respect it deserves. I have CHL (Ohio) carried a S&W model 332 in a pocket holster for the past several years. Everything you said about the H&R Mganum is right on. 6 rounds and it literally disappears in my pocket. Recoil is definitely light, though snappy.

I have my grandfather’s Colt Detective Special in .32 long. He bought it in the late 40’s. Still in the original box. He kept it in his nightstand. Mint condition. Less than 500 rounds have gone through it. A sweet shooter.
I like the LCR in 9mm. It is 17 oz. It uses moon clips so loading and unloading are fast. Full length ejection also. The ammo selection is abundant and inexpensive. The hollow point bullets open as well as they do in a compact semiauto. The cartridge is more powerful than a 38 and less than a 357. It's somewhat exciting to shoot in this small revolver but with good grips it's controllable and fast. Revolvers have the advantage up very close. Within hands on distance they are better suited than a semi because they won't go out of battery. You can shove the muzzle up against a body and the gun will function just fine. I believe the Ruger LCR in 9mm is the ideal backup gun.
Hand loaders have been loading single aught buckshot as a round ball 'casual plinking' or practice round. Very economical way to practice.
Also former NRA magazine editor and all around hand loading guru Ed Harris made up a couple of single shot rifles for 32 Long and 32 Mag. If you are interested in this caliber you should search out those articles on the internet. Very informative of the potential these rounds offer.
thanks for making this video! I have been telling people for years that the .32 smith and Wesson long is a VERY Underrated round for self defense. In our great grandparents day .32 revolvers and autos were looked upon as very capable for self defense. I own two revolvers both with 3 inch barrels one is a smith model 30 the other a Rossi model 76 stainless with pachmayr grips I do NOT feel undergunned with either. Wadcutters are what I use both Buffalo bore and S&B as well as magtech. I also have two P32 kel-tecs. I also reload and when I do buy ammo I buy in quantity so ammo is not as much an issue for me. In the case of the .32 autos I use HOT European Ball!
Just bought a Charter Arms Undercoverette in .32 H&R Mag, for use with .32 S&W Long Wadcutters for my wife. Love the accuracy and low recoil of the .32 S&W Long.
32 ACP can also be used in 327 revolvers. They can be a bit of a sticky situation to eject at times, but they do work.
I’ve been reading a lot of the Parker novels by Richard Stark. I notice that just about every time the protagonist needs a gun he goes with the smallest possible, especially .32 revolvers. I just finished one where a police captain Carries a SW model 30 snub. I’m thinking of getting one myself.
Great survey of an under-appreciated caliber! About 1991 I snapped up a .32 H&R Magnum S&W 632 Airweight Centennial revolver because it had a GOOD GAP (unlike most S&W snubby revolvers of these later years.) It was a THREE-Inch stainless barrel on an aluminum frame, with a buttery trigger! It also came with that magnificent "Uncle Mike's Combat Grip," the one that is shaped like a banana and allows slip-proof holsterless IWB carry. I knew what I was looking for---and there it was. It shot great and was very controllable, so I stocked up on LOTS of .32 H&R Mag ammo, suspecting that the caliber would not catch on. It has been my daily carry weapon since then, showing NO WEAR at all except to the rubber grip. The point of writing all this is to recommend Buffalo Bore .32 Mag ammo, which might as well be called +P. It is great stuff and very HOT, yet the revolver shows absolutely no damage from limited use of that loading. And no, I will never sell it!...……………………………...elsullo

Charter Arms still produces a 5 shot 32 H&R Magnum 2 inch snub called the Undercoverette. It’s made in a 16 oz stainless frame version and a 12 oz alloy model. It’s fun to shoot, has a very mild recoil, and is a viable self defense caliber.
Why did Charter discontinue the Patriot .327 Federal back in 2012 just after 3 years of production?
Back in the 1960's my mother was a secretary with the probate court in Macon,Ga. Georgia was one of the first States to issue concealed weapons permits. They told her to go to a local gun store that sold to the male police officers, and female meter maids. She bought a Smith and Wesson, model 31, in .32 S&W long with a four inch barrel. This was what the meter maids carried. We still have her old revolver. Recoil is light, and accuracy is superb.
.327 Federal Magnum seems quite intriguing, I may have to look into it.
I love these comparative videos. Another comparative video that I would like to see is the ballistics and felt recoil difference between 9 mm revolvers and .38 spl revolvers (and varying the barrel length to see if MAC's claim that 9mm is potentially a better caliber for snub nose revolvers). Having both the Charter Arms Pitbull 9mm revolver and the Taurus M905 I can tell you this; In my experience and perspective from shooting my bunch of J frames with 38+P many hundreds of rounds, I liken the felt recoil of a regular Rem 115g FMJ & JHP similar to a strong 38+P load through a J frame. Very similar to a Fed 158g 38+P LSWCHP labeled 'high velocity' in a J size. A snap, but VERY manageable for me and in both my 9 revolvers are as accurate as I am at 15 paces. Again, your mileage may vary. Be safe, shoot and have fun.

@@enb3810 Taurus makes an excellent all steel snubby in 9mm. I love mine and feel the recoil is similar to a .38spcl, but ammo is cheaper by a mile. Also uses moon clips for fast reloading.

I'm no gun guru, but I love this caliber more than any other. Well 327 federal anyways. Ive yet to fire one out of a stubby, but out of my redhawk (correct me if I've got the actions wrong on the redhawk and the Blackhawk swapped) and my sp101.
As far as Paul goes, he tends to go for wide audience calibers, and sadly the 32 doesn't have a wide audience.

Great video, as usual! I have two 327s, an LCRx (exposed hammer) for my wife's bedroom gun, and an LCR (hidden hammer) for my favorite pocket gun. I love these guns. 32 Long for general shooting at the range, and 32 Mag for defense (it's the sweet spot of the 4 choices, but is very expensive). I rarely shoot the 327 Mag cartridge due to recoil, slow follow-up, and noise.

My grandfather taught me pistol skills and safety on an old smith & wesson police model with a 6 or 7 inch barrel, it was chambered in the new police load.Easy enough on the hands and ears for youngsters, accurate enough to shoot bottle caps at 35 -40 feet.

I was seriously considering a .327-chambered LCR for my wife, who has become more recoil sensitive over the years due to a health condition. Sadly, the lack of ammunition availability locally has swayed me away from this. It's shame, as the versatility of the theoretical .32 offerings is quite alluring.

Have your wife practice with the 32 Longs which aren't too bad to find, and then load the H&R's in for her self defense. Not that loud and 38 special power and low recoil. So you order 5 boxes off the internet for ammo you won't use often. I like to think the caliber may be catching on, so hopefully more ammo choices will be available.

I disagree with the idea of practicing with a light ammo and carrying a magnum. Just load her up with 32 wadcutters. They cut deep and aren't too expensive.
LoneWanderer360 Gotta practice with your carry ammo occasionally. I hate when people practice with target loads but never shoot the ammo that might actually save their life. You’d be surprised how much difference there can be between target ammo and self defense ammo.
As a result of this video, I bought an LCR and an LCRx in .327 Federal Magnum when I found .327 Federal Magnum ammo on my local gun store shelf. Chris is correct. The .32 is best for light weight revolvers. Perhaps Lucky Gunner can stock more of it. I would buy it.

I'll give you a thumbs up for the points you made and the fact that you addressed the big "yeah but".
That extra round is nice, but at this stage it is almost just hypothetical. There are also hypothetical lower recoil options for the 38/357 snubbies. These have plenty of projectiles available. They just don't have a lot of proper factory support. However, reloading is another matter. I speak of the 38 Short Colt and 38 Long Colt options. Brass is cheap and they will take the .357" diameter bullets along with lighter powder charges to offer good ballistics with less recoil. The other thing missing is a good source of reload data so that these cases can be loaded to .38 Spl +P potential (and even .357 Magnum which essentially gives you a 9x19mm round in a rimmed case for the Short Colt).
I just wish we'd find more 6 shot .38's on the market. Everyone and their polymers these days, ugh.
I have a .32 WWII era Walther PPK and a South American .32 revolver. The revolver has a puma logo and is delightfully accurate. It belonged to a grandfather and was loaded with shots hello when I got it. Both have been carry guns.

You shouldn’t have to worry about stopping power with cartridges 32auto and up if you practice proper shot placement, repeatable accuracy, and situational awareness. 32 auto was a fairly standard pistol cartridge up until wwii and saw military and police service with most of the prominent world powers during wwi. Remember that the change to higher capacity and higher stopping power small arms was mostly due to the lack of marksmanship in the drafted units at the time, leading to small arms that take drastically less training to become effective with.
Watched this video at least a dozen times. The presentation and delivery is very good. As someone who likes the smaller rounds this is a great video. I re-qualified my CC license with an LCR 327 with 32h&r mag rounds. It was a pussycat! Accurate and little to no recoil. Afraid my days with .357’s and probably 9mm are behind me.

Thank you for doing this video comparison. I have been fascinated with the .327 Federal Magnum for quite some time. Since Ruger has made a GP100 with seven rounds of .357 mag, I have been bugging them to release the same revolver with eight rounds of .327 mag with the promise to purchase at least one upon announcement. Your video confirms what I have been thinking for quite some time. I admit it is hard to overcome the common availability of the .38/.357 but hopefully more videos like this will get the general public excited about this round.

Yeah. I never would have considered oddball or orphan calibers prior to becoming a reloader. After becoming a bullet caster, I now almost look for the weird stuff. All the guns that sell under price because you can't find ammo are nothing special for me to make ammo for.

@KAMOMI: Yes, .327 can be reloaded for thirteen or fourteen cents a round once you get a little brass accumulated.
A reloading setup pays for itself in no time.

Both my wife and I now carry Ruger LCRx 327s. She carries her's with Hornady 32 H&R Magnum ammo and I carry mine with 327 Federal 85 grain Hydra-Shok reduced recoil. For range time, I reload my 327 cases to maximum 32 H&R Magnum capacity. Perfect plinking round for my SP101 327 and a perfect practice round for our LCRx 327s.

With the .327 Fed being a ballistic champ of the .32 'division' I can't figure why Charter chose not to produce a six round revolver (see the discontinued Patriot of 2012 ) . With the metallurgy available, the craftsmen there could of produced an 'ultra-compact' version of its Bulldog design in a five shooter. Now that would be an interesting concealed carry weapon.

Thank you for presenting a fair and balanced overview of the .32 family of cartridges. My S&W 31-1 has served me well over the last 30 years when I have chosen to carry it. It is not my EDC gun, but in the summer, it beats carrying my HK VP9 when I am dressing lightly. FWIW, I do carry handloads in it and I get the most from the .32 Long cartridge that I can.
Your comment on SAMMI pressures is spot on. Even with so called "cheap" RG revolvers I can load the 32 Long up to 32 H&R specs with NO issues.

A bonus is, I'm taking your advice concerning reloading due to the potential unpredictable availability of the .32. So, I'm getting back into reloading just because of this round. I've fired everything through it so far, except for the .327 Magnum. The .32 H&R Magnum was very tame in its perceived recoil, so if the .327 proves too much, I'll be very happy carrying the gun with the H&Rs. I might even load the first two rounds in H&R and the third one the .327. This is, by far, one of the best gun channels on the web. Thanks again for your wonderful, informative videos. ... I've been using it for 58 years when traveling and paying, first a Taurus #.32 SWL, then a Beretta #.22 LRHP (Stinger) with the #.32 "back-up". . . Thank God I never had any problems...! 😁🙏🍀

Some years ago at our National Firearms Unit I was corrected by ammo manufactures when I used the term, “SAAMI Specs.” They said that SAAMI doesn’t write specifications, but writes recommendations. Seems that SAAMI recommendations are not binding, just recommendations in regards to chamber pressures.

I tried to embrace the 32. Snubby and ended up going to a 6 shot 38 snubby. A all steel 6-shot 38 still carries and shoots nice for me. I have a S&W model 10 2" and a Taurus 856
My first handgun was a US Revolver Company top break in .32 S&W (short variety). It has the 5.5 inch barrel and a blued finish, and even today is a great shooter, 102 years later. I absolutely love it.

r73 h&r .32 mag, bought it used 4 years ago. love it. practice with it often, one would not want to be on the other side of me threatening the safety of me or mine. recently had to downsize my fairly large holdings of firearms kept, sks, cz bolt action (same cal.), 12 guage ted williams with adj. choke, 1911 commander, and of course the aforementioned r73. this was for financial reasons. selling the safe queens was the best decision i ever made. 2 good shtf guns, 2 good hunting guns, and a good concealed carry.

I bought my wife a S&W 332 Centennial in .32 H&R Magnum around 2001-2002. 6 shots. Nice little revolver and does not kick as much as a .38. They seem to be bringing a lot of money now. It is her CC handgun. There was a time when the cartridge was quite popular for handgun metallic silhouette shooting, it had the power to reliably knock down ram targets and had much less recoil than .357 magnum.
I purchased a Ruger LCR in 327 Federal Magnum a few years ago and have been very pleased. Loaded with Buffalo Bore's 130 grain hard cast rounds, it's a very viable option as a light weight carry piece. Thanks very much for posting.
