  • Making a blade from Damascus steel from two 5 meter tape measures and 100 blades for stationery knives. 201 layers in one forge weld (my new record).
    Hibiscus tea.
    www.amazon.com/shop/shurap
On my patreon page, I began to explain the processes and secrets of my work. Topics already covered:
    1. Why do I add pepper to container Damascus steel.
    2. What do I sprinkle? Flux and its composition.
    3. How do I remove the container from the workpiece (container Damascus steel).
    4. Why am I drilling a hole in a container.
    5. Why do I sweep away the dross from the anvil with my hand.
    6. Why do I first forge some blanks on a tree.
    7. In what and why do I soak the blank before forging.
    8. In which granules do I place the workpiece after forging.
    9. What kind of white powder do I pour into the container.

He is absolutely my favorite smith on RUclips and anywhere else for that matter. This channel and his other one, Cossack Forge are the best! It's always a great day when I see another video posted by him!

      @Ren Draco
Sure, there are several smiths that I enjoy watching that are very good. Shurap / Cossack Forge is my favorite because I think his style of forging best suits me and my ideas, but some others that I like in no particular order are:
      Torbjorn Ahman
      Working With Iron Nathan
      Gary Huston
      Brian Brazeal
      Mark Aspery
      Joey van der Steeg
      Black Bear Forge
      Dirty Smith
      Glen GS Tongs
      DF - In The Shop
      KyleRoyerKnives
      Alec Steele / Will Stelter
      Christ Centered Ironworks
      Paul Krzysz
I don't know how much of a RUclips presence they have, but if you get the chance to look them up, these are some great DVDs / books to check out:
*Knifemaking Unplugged (DVD) by Tim & Marion Lively - this video has been a great inspiration to me because he is showing how you can forge a knife with very basic equipment, and no power. Great for folks starting out.
      * Forging Damascus: How to Create Pattern-Welded Blades (DVD) by Jim Hrisoulas - Jim also has several excellent books on creating pattern welded Damascus. If that's your thing, this guy is like the Godfather of Damascus.
*The Skills of a Blacksmith Series of books by Mark Aspery - these are a fantastic series of books that go over the fundamentals of blacksmithing in great detail.
      * The Spruce Forge Manual of Locksmithing : A Blacksmith's Guide to Lock Mechanisms by Denis Frechette & Bill Morrison - very interesting little book on locks made by blacksmiths, if that's your thing.
I'm sure there are plenty of others that I am forgetting, but this should be a good little list to start from. Hope this helps!

I agree that it's annoying to not use the correct term for pattern welds, and it used to bother me quite a bit that others would never label it properly. But honestly these days with the advent of shows such as Forged in Fire and smiths using that term as a verbal shortcut on RUclips and elsewhere, the two names are pretty much synonymous in the public eye. Personally, I decided to give it a rest and let others call it what they will. I just mentally skip over people calling it "Damascus" all the time and focus on the beauty of what is created...though I'm sure my eye still twitches every time I hear it used incorrectly. :D

The two materials used etch at a different rate - the tape measure metal likely was mild steel, and as such has higher nickel content and etches brighter when dipped in the etching solution (likely ferric chloride). The stationery knife blades were likely a higher carbon steel, which etched darker. This, combined with the creative use of the dies in the hydraulic press, created the complex pattern seen at the end. This is known in the bladesmithing community as damascus steel.
