    I really recommend Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, if you want urban fantasy with American Indian protagonist and motifs, as well as a very diverse cast of supporting characters. Another one would be Ukiah Oregon quintet by Wen Spencer, which is sci-fi/urban fantasy with American Indian protagonist and the third recommendation goes to Kate Daniels series, which is incredibly diverse and very respectful of other cultures, especially Easter European ones.

      @@ebnovels you're quite welcome. Wen Spencer is very talented but extremely underrated author, probably due to being published by Barn Books - but she's progressive as heck, with beautiful and strong female protagonists of color before that was cool. :) I'm talking about her Elfhome series there.

    I too find that books or authors I really enjoyed end up showing a "so-so" rating online. I've decided it's probably because if a book is quirky or in some way atypical, readers either love it or hate it and the ratings end up averaging out in the middle. I haven't read The Midnight Bargain but I have read two of the three books in her Witchmark trilogy and really enjoyed them. I'm just waiting until winter to read the next one as they are set in a wintry setting and I like matching up the book with the season. And thank you, I hadn't heard of the Arthurian Tales books, I added Lancelot to my TBR. The Cardinal's Blades looks interesting too.

    For urban fantasy I would recommend the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. The first two books aren't quite as good as the rest of the series but the series is actually finished which can be rare to find in UF. Other good UF series are Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs and the October Daye and Incryptid series by Seanan McGuire. October Daye is more serious and dark and Incryptid is much snarkier and leans a little more into romance. Also, Anne Bishop's the Others series is pretty interesting. It's kind of dark. It imagines a world where humans are blatantly not the top of the food chain.

    I got Trail of Lightning from the library so I'm looking forward to reading it. I've listened to a couple of her short stories on LeVar Burton Reads and enjoyed them and Black Sun, so I think Rebecca Roanhorse is going to be a favorite for me as well. I loved Thorn. I got an arc of her novella that comes in between that and the second book and really loved it as well. I'm looking forward to the second book.

    Trail of Lightning is great! I wouldn't call it urban fantasy though. It takes place on a Navajo reserve and more of a rural setting. Its pretty great though and worldbuilding is seamless af. Has a kind of post-apocalyptic near-future sword & sorcery feel to it. The second book in the series, Storm of Locusts, was even better imo especially for the character development! Pierre Pavel has also been on my to-read list! Have heard a lot of good things about his other series too.

  • @Rachelsjourney
    @Rachelsjourney 3 года назад

    Thanks for the video! For urban fantasy, I recommend the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews - they are fun books to use as a palate cleanser from heavy fantasy. The first book is a little weak but the series is really good. They (the husband/wife writing team known as Ilona Andrews) are good at keeping a balance with the male/female characters (meaning that the relationship dynamics seem realistic) and they put their own spin on the typical UF tropes. They also write a UF/SciFi series called Innkeeper Chronicles. Also, have you read the UF Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch - it is set in modern day London. The audio books are a MUST - the narrator is fantastic!
