I see so many people say the Final empire could be a standalone, and I kinda see it but after reading book 2 and 3 I cant imagine not knowing everything else that happens 🤣 book 3 is my favorite ending of like any series.
SAME with Mistborn!!! The first was like wow that's quite solid. And then the other two... I fell in love. Hard. Hard hard hard. Epic, amazing, wonderful, devastating. Just everything I want for my reading.
Oh, this is a great video, Elle! I was just thinking of creating a video on this topic! Knowing what happened at Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages (absolutely brilliant dear Lord Ruler just stab my heart), it can be difficult to consider the first book as a one-off standalone. But yes, it can indeed work! :)
I got addicted to the puzzle Brandon built in the background of Mistborn so I had to keep going and couldn’t put it down, ever 😂 I have a friend that only liked The Final Empire ... and I guess I get where they’re coming from but also nah :P
@@henrywayne5724 Don't get me wrong, the ending made sense, the more and more I think about it, but at the end of it, nobody really won. Like everyone lost.
lol that's kinda what happens when you follow videos by people with similar tastes, you see similar things. I never see COD bought up in any gaming video I watch, but I see Witcher 3 and Dark Souls pop up a hell of a lot.
I totally respect your opinion on the Curse Breaker Series I Loved All of Them in different ways but my favorite one was definitely the first one just like you Elle 😊 However I’m so glad that Brigid Kemmerer continued the series and I Loved Book 3 It wrapped the whole story up nicely in my opinion 😊
*Me huddled in the same camp as Elle warm by the fire and our Mistborn trilogy* Lol, Mistborn is one of my favorite series, really glad its not a standalone!
I can see the point of Mistborn, but Brandon built his entire universe around the 3 era's of Mistborn books and without it, the entire Cosmere would collapse, IMO.
11:36 “ah well darn it because I really liked the first two”, such a mood 😂 great video and discussion (especially about the publishers and their intentions) from you! 🌸
I dnfed A Heart so Fierce and Broken at around 50%, I prefer to consider the first book a standalone (and that makes me mad because they look so pretty all together, love the covers)
Woah...the first book which came to my mind after seeing the title was A curse so dark and lonely. If I could just go back , I would just stop after the first book. 💔
I’ve really struggled with booktube recently, and have had no interest in any of the content I have been seeing BUT THIS video, got me smiling ☺️ thanks Elliot for reminding me of the passion that books can bring out in people 🧡
For Strange the Dreamer, Laini Taylor actually intended it to be one book, but wound up with so much and split it into two. Which kind of makes sense, but ever since I read Priory of the Orange Tree, I'm completely on board with just one massive standalone and we wouldn't have needed Muse of Nightmares. But I think with the Mistborn series, the second book just took all my least favorite parts of the first book and doubled down on them, but I'm glad I was committed to the series because Hero of Ages is the best ending I've ever read. And I think I would like the second book more upon rereading because I know how well it ends.
Nothing has come close to how I felt after finishing Strange the Dreamer before Muse of Nightmares was released 😂 The cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers. It's interesting to try to think of the two books as one large one instead of a duology. I can definitely understand people who stop at The Final Empire. It does seem to wrap up pretty neatly, and it does feel like it could stop, but only because there's so much that's still unknown! Fun video!
I really love your honesty and facial expressions when your describing your books 📚 please stay safe and strong love from your number one Australia fan John
I love Mistborn, but I couldn't finish the third book. I made the mistake of reading some spoilers about the ending, and I felt so disappointed and anxious (mostly anxious!) that I simply stopped reading it. I will pick it up again and will definitely finish it once I'm in a better emotional state.
I'm probably one of the few with this opinion but for Mistborn I think the first is amazing, the second could dissapear, and the third one was amazing as well. It could have been a duology with both the first and the second book a little bit thicker but with a lot of that second book just removed and I think the series would have been better for it. I read bloodsong last year and really loved it, but I heard similar complaints towards that series (that the first should be read as a standalone and you should pretend the second and third boek don't exist) but I'm going to read the second book this month! So I'm curious to see what I'll think about this!
I feel vindicated you had A Curse so Dark and Lonely on this list! I finished that book and I liked it but the ending introducing the rest of the series felt kind of tacked on. Then I read the synopsis of the next book, which made it seem like the hero of the first book would be a bit of an antagonist in book 2 and decided to keep it as a standalone in my mind
I think, that for whatever reason, the reading market seems to be geared towards these complex magic systems with an origin story: Thanks Brandon Sanderson. I think that fact alone drives the market towards these series, especially fantasy SCI books which aren't self contained, and because of that, there is even a drawing away from certain aspects of humanity and asking difficult questions and trying to have those discussions, because these are stories and not social commentaries; however, what if, and hear me out, what if there was a fantasy novel specifically focusing on the slice of life story of a character in a fantastical world without the mystery of solving a murder, or without some dark lord looming over head, maybe some economic disparity or even getting into the nitty gritty of mental illness. I'm working on a project right now, hoping to have it published by September, that is a slice of life story, kind of. There isn't a dark lord, but there is some mystery. Maybe I'll write a slice of life fantasy novel later in my world of Alkathos. Maybe I'm a hypocrate, idk. I'm going to have lots of paper work to do.
I've only read The Final Empire (out of all Mistborn books), but I wouldn't like it to be a standalone, since that 1st book was a bit disappointing and predictable. There's always room for improvement, so I'm hopeful for the next two books
I almost DNFed Mistborn after book 1 because I was like "it's ok but I'm not 100% sold" but I carried on because I'd bought all three at once so I thought I might as well and I was so glad I did, Hero of Ages is one of my favourite books now!
I love ur videos but wanted to sympathize with the temperature as summer is on the way. In Maryland it's humid heat, not dry heat. Do you get any snow where you live?
almost didnt read the sequels to mistborn, specially since my fav character already died. But after reading all of sanderson books, and discovering the cosmere, how can i not continue mistborn? and im glad that i did.
I need to reread The Final Empire. I stopped after book 2 as my heart was broken I couldn't read book 3. So now going to reread them all and finally finish. No way should it be a standalone. 💜 I was the same, book 1 was good. But book 2 made me fall in love with the series.
And as for another series you should definitely check out if you haven’t already is The Ravenspire Series by C.J Redwine I Absolutely Adored Every Single Book and best part is you can read them in any order Elle and the worlds are awesome in each one of the novels Take Care 🙂
You can add Queen of the Tearling to this. Never have I ever wished I never continued reading a series like I did with this. And if you’re reading this right now after finishing book 1, just stop. Trust me.
A thousand-plus page standalone? If it's by Laini Taylor, YES PLEASE! (Also, I did have to wait for Muse of Nightmares and you're totally right, that was one painful wait)
Wolves of Mercy Falls by Maggie Stiefvater could have ended with Shiver. In fact, I never read the other two books because I was so satisfied with the ending of book 1.
I think you can read The Final Empire as a standalone and feel satisfied with the ending, however for me personally, I love the characters and world so much that I want more of it. I love seeing HOW the world fares AFTER the impossible task has been accomplished. You don't see that often in books.
I would be interested to see if you have any epic fantasy series (that go on for like 5+ books) that would have been better as trilogies. I've read a few series last year and this year that I'm just like, "seriously, this is all not necessary!" that I liked, but would have liked SO MUCH MORE if they had been shorter/less books.
I’m in the camp where I wish Mistborn was a stand-alone. I loved the Final Empire but books 2&3 were decently good but dragged and while I was ok with the ending, there were other aspects that I could have done without.
Definitely in the camp that says Mistborn was better as a trilogy, though I thought the first book was by far the best of the series. What are those four books next to Morningstar on your shelf?
Maybe it's not a popular opinion but for me "A heart so fierce and broken" should be a standalone (I could skip the 1st one) because *spoiler* Rhen = Adolin, Grey = Kaladin, on so many levels! And it is obvious who is more loveable :D Am I the only one who feels like that?
I treat all fantasy novels as standalone. I have numerous book ones, but I have very few later books. I have Mistborn, I have Way of Kings, I do not have the sequels, and I have no desire to read them.
I loved the final empire. I've been about 30% through well of ascension since November. I can't bring myself to pick it back up. For the queens of Renthia series: I felt like the first book was the weakest. I enjoyed 2&3 much more.
Push through the second book in Mistborn. For me, the first half was the weakest part, and then it goes right back to just as good as it was in book one. Then book 3 tops everything that came before, consistently ratcheting the tension and topping itself to an absolutely climactic and satisfying ending.
Hard agree with Cursebreaker series. I have been thinking of getting rid of books 2 and 3 and make believe it was a standalone. I think book 2 would have been better if we focused on the two male perspectives and dropped Lia Mara. Her POV was unnecessary. I like Mistborn as a trilogy but I think all the books could have been shorter. They were very repetitive to me. Especially book 3.
Generally, I expect sequels to be sort of “spin-offs”, different from the original book! Unless it’s an actual series with the “to be continued” vibe, as you mentioned. 😅 I was still disappointed by AHSFAB, because I missed the characters from ACSDAL, even though I liked it as a spin-off!
For those of us who read Sanderson, 1,000 pages isn't quite so intimidating but I think you are right. However, it could have been that she's a YA author and considered her "audience". Also, side note, most people that I know that read Laini Taylor are adults 🤔
Funny how you said Strange the dreamer could be one massive book instead of two and Im sitting here with my German translation which is sold as 4 books! why? they all have like under 400 pages
I read Mistborn Era1 back to back, so I honestly do not know if I would have liked it as a stand alone. If I think of myself when finishing the first book I would tell myself "You are but a child! I am in another level, so shut up and keep reading" 🤣 On the other hand, Warbreaker I like as a stand alone and there are rumores that more books may come in the future... And I hope they won't, so I get people that are satisfied with just one book in some stories 🤓👍
Every time I see a book advertised as a standalone (especially fantasy) if I wait just 1 year, there's always a continuation. Every. Time. But I blame capitalism, as often even some trilogies you've been just one book, but I also "blame the readers" since people will read a 4 book series of 300 pages per book, but then say a single 1000 page book is too big of a commitment. Kinda like LotR too was split purely for marketing purposes. But I'd much rather have a self contained story than expect whether a publisher will have mercy to grant us a complete story or if it will stretch for no reason. Also don't get me started on me being a cover snob and hating when they change them or the format midway, you don't have those issues with a single volume book.
I totally get the thing with Mistborn. I am a fan of the sries and gave 5 stars to all three of the books. But. I enjoyed the first one the most and I remember that when I finished it I was like wait. This is trilogy? Where is this going? It ended. Or not? And the other two books I adored too, but it was just not the same feeling as the first one. I got threw the second one mostly because of Elend, since he is my precious vanilla scholary boy and I love him, but something was missing. And I found the third book slightly too much sometimes - all the things that tie up together just made my brain boil at times. But there was Spook. And Spook - hella that was the character and part that got me threw the third one and why I gave it 5 stars. So in conclusion - I loved whole Mistborn, but Final Empire because of plot and the other ones because of characters. And I think everyone should read it. ;)
Same here! I was so excited to see Beigid Kemmerer publish a fantasy book, I even pre-ordered it. And that ended up being on of the most disappointing books of that year. It was so boring, it wasn't immersive at all and the message she tried to push felt discounted from the rest of the story.
I recently read the Mistborn series. I liked book 2 more than book 1 but I enjoyed boys. I struggled through book 3. It took so long because it was so boring. I understand the why of the ending, but all the things building up to it. Nope. Boring. Mind numbing. Way too stretched out. I’m really turned off of Brandon Sanderson now. I need someone to tell me that the books actually get better and that I should keep reading his work.
For me personally, The Well Of Ascension was my fave actually. I really enjoyed all the storylines. The Hero Of Ages just didn't work for me for the most part.
I see so many people say the Final empire could be a standalone, and I kinda see it but after reading book 2 and 3 I cant imagine not knowing everything else that happens 🤣 book 3 is my favorite ending of like any series.

@@armanisar-feinial1789 Sameeeeee. The ending is so revered and frankly, I didn't like it. Just goes to show how different reading tastes are.
@@henrywayne5724 Don't get me wrong, the ending made sense, the more and more I think about it, but at the end of it, nobody really won. Like everyone lost.

Same here! I was so excited to see Beigid Kemmerer publish a fantasy book, I even pre-ordered it. And that ended up being on of the most disappointing books of that year. It was so boring, it wasn't immersive at all and the message she tried to push felt discounted from the rest of the story.
I feel so alone. I really didn't like the ending to Mistborn Era One. 👀😕😬
So True for strange The dreamer
I recently read the Mistborn series. I liked book 2 more than book 1 but I enjoyed boys. I struggled through book 3. It took so long because it was so boring. I understand the why of the ending, but all the things building up to it. Nope. Boring. Mind numbing. Way too stretched out. I’m really turned off of Brandon Sanderson now. I need someone to tell me that the books actually get better and that I should keep reading his work.
Yeah you're right ... I disagree about Strange the Dreamer.😉🤔💓
Poppy Wars. The second book and the ending were really bad T.T
Cough Hunger Games Cough
hard agree with mistborn being a standalone. the next two just draggeddddd.....
For me personally, The Well Of Ascension was my fave actually. I really enjoyed all the storylines. The Hero Of Ages just didn't work for me for the most part.
final empire should’ve been the final book💀
Of hero of age is so much. Anyone who disagrees needs to get off booktube 😆😆
I think Hunger Games could be a stand alone.
