Fantasy standalone is such a gem! Thank you for these lists ^^ it is so good to know more about fantasy standalone to break a bit from the endeless series.
i LOVE that you gave these recommendations- I am someone who lately has been **really** bad with completing/continuing series and long for more standalones. 💜💜💜
I love standalones, I get severe book hangover and standalones make it stronger but shorter so I can move to another book quicker. Love them. And hello murder mysteries! Sorcery of thorns in already in my tbr since the author is my favorite and it's bound to give me Amazing visuals :D
ok long may she reign sounds AMAZING!! i added it to my amazon and goodreads list ASAP! my favorite fantasy stand alone is Heartless by Marissa Meyer, it an alice and wonderland retelling. it about the backstory of the queen of hearts. im not a big fan of alice and wonderland but i loved this book! i did make a review recently if anyone is interested in watching it!
You *may* have convinced me to try Spinning Silver. I stomached Uprooted for as long as I possibly could before DNFing, and I thought I hated it enough to never give her another shot. But......you’re definitely selling it to my folklore/fae-loving self.
I have Descendant of the Crane on my shelf and am planning to read it in May. Some great books here! Also really enjoyed The Shadows Between Us, Sorcery of Thorns, Spinning Silver and Warbreaker. (I’m not used to having read so many on your recommendation lists!)
Love the new edition effects!! I always prefer standalones. It isn't easy to get all books from a series because here is more complicated. The ones that get to us may not continue. Thank goodness I'm more into classics right now although the prices even in second hand books are extremely expensive. Anyway, I love your videos to see what is going on in the book world. Hugs from Argentina 🤗🤗❤
I actually just got Warbreaker because you recommend it all the time (and I love sister stories) also "I love books and there are magical books in this book!" is killing me XD
Thanks for this. Long may she reign sounds like my cuppa tea. I sometimes wonder what would happen if an entire royal family gets wiped out etc. Etc. So, i can't wait to get into it.
My favorite lesser known YA standalone fantasy is Sisters of Sword and Song by Rebecca Ross 🥰 its a Greek inspired story about sisters. One is a warrior and the other becomes a scribe. It's such an action packed, emotional, and well paced story. It's a story very focused on family, loyalty, and self-discovery. I highly recommend haha so much! I also love Sorcery of Thorns, The Light Between Worlds, and Cinderella is Dead 💗
@@saxybrit same! I fell in love with her writing. I plan on reading her Queen's Rising duology this year too! I already went out and bought them haha shamelessly addicted!
@@taylorpence2403 ooh I hope you love it! I borrowed The Queens Rising from the library then had to go and buy my own copy and read it again because I loved it so much! They’re such comfort reads.
@@saxybrit I cannot wait to read them! Her writing is very comforting, but also, very meaningful! I found some amazing quotes from Sisters of Sword and Song 🥰
Fantasy Stand Alone that I enjoyed was :Spirit Fox Mickey Zucker Reichert 1998. Once in awhile, the gods choose an animal and pair the two together in unity. The lord's Daughter, Kiarda, was chosen, but what happens when the animal chosen is slain on their birthday? The spirit resides within the human and is subject to altering consciousness. This takes place in a land where peace is guarded fiercely and those training with the blade are outcast, that is, until a well trained army approaches, bent on conquest.
Stories about authors having their work mishandled frustrate me to no end. May have to hunt down Descendant of the Crane (in a way that hopefully benefits the author) just to restore some sense of justice to my worldview...
I always feel like there aren't enough standalone books, but then really I have read more than I realized too! Long Mey She Reign sounds interesting, and it is one I have never heard of before! Descendant of the Crane is one that has been on my list to pick up forever! It sounds like a really good book and the cover is super pretty!
I'm definitely going to have to check out Spinning SIlver. I had to DNF Uprooted but I'm hoping to have more luck with Spinning Silver. I'm also a big fan of China Mieville as far as other fantasy standalones and pretty much everything he writes is a stand-alone. He definitely tends toward weird but he does fun stuff with language and wordplay.
Yay for standalones! Definitely trying to read more of them as series are quite daunting. Thank you for the list! Technology destroyed my reading habit so single novels are helpful with repairing the damage. Ps: Descendant of the Crane has such a beautiful cover omg
Another great fantasy stand alone that has a Jewish main character is The Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner. It takes place in Moldova and also deals with the pograms against the Jews. It has two perspectives (the two sisters) one of which is written in prose. The author's family actually came to America from Moldova to escape the pograms.
Warbreaker is a great book. It's a weird hybrid though, it is a stand alone, but it is also part of the larger Cosmere and so is tied in to other books.
I started that one last year right around when my father’s health started to decline, so I never got to finish it. I definitely need to pick it back up!
If you want great fantasy standalones you can't forget Neil Gaiman's books, I'm reading through most of them for the first time recently and they've all been brilliant, especially the hardback illustrated edition of The Ocean At The End Of The Lane.
Spinning Silver and Warbreaker! 🤩 I really enjoyed both! Since we're talking about standalones: Have you ever read Circe? I don't think I've ever seen a video about this book on your channel, but I could be wrong! Anyway, Circe is a very enjoyable read, but I LOVED the Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec. I just read it (it's a new release, came out this month) and it's like Circe but follows a witch in Norse Mythology (the wife of Loki) and it's now one of my favorite books ever. I hope you have the time to check it out if it sounds interesting.
Question. When exactly is the live show for Jesse and your readalong. I like to get to the book a day or two beforehand so its fresh. Is there someplace that the date/time will be posted in future?
You should read my novels 'Castle Lochwind Savage Bloodline the Coming and the Sequel Castle Lochwind Savage Bloodline the Shifters! I'm a new author working on the third to make these a Trilogy! Thanks
the shadows between us was such a fun romp! a romance between two self-serving people is quite a change from the average romance fantasy🥰
I bought that book bc of Elles recommendation! I'm looking forward to getting to it this year
@@lucaleone4331 hope you like it😊

I really loved Sorcery of Thorns. It does have a young tone but I found it to be incredibly well written.

I loved Heartless! Such a great retelling / back story. I’m going to go watch your review 😊
@@saxybrit aw ty🥺
Loved these suggestions; sometimes I’m in the mood for a fantasy read but it’s hard to find a stand alone. Thanks for posting! 💕
I feel like I haven't seen too many fantasy standalones, as you said, so I'm excited to pick some of these up!
I was thinking about a video like this, but didn't find one updated enough! Thank you so much!
I agree with your opinions on soooo many of these! Really want to pick up Spinning Silver soon! 😊
Do it! Spinning Silver is SO good!
@@catsandbats77 I will 😊 it has been on my radar for a little while now and this year shall be the year I read it 👍

I did NOT like Uprooted, but I loved Spinning Silver 😄😄😄
The Priory of the Orange Tree is an adult fantasy stand alone book. Although it's 800+ pages so...
I also always feel like there aren't many fantasy standalones but I definitely need to check some of these out!
Maybe they just don’t get hyped as much since there isn’t anticipation surrounding the release of sequels 🤔
@@ebnovels Good point! The most popular fantasy series tend to be really long!

The author said the paperback (by Titan Books) is the best way to help her right now
@@sabrina.lnd95 Good to know!
I saw a review on goodreads that describes The Shadows Between Us as a book about two Slytherins (enemies to lovers romance) and I agree with that.
My addition to this list would be The Priory of the Orange Tree written by Samantha Shannon. It's just amazing ❤️
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for this❤

The Shadow Between Us was fast paces and different it got me out of a book hangover , highly recommend!
This is so helpful! Thank you!!
What we do in the Shadows is fantastic. Hilarious. And I just realized that Matt Berry, who plays Laszlo, also voices the pig in Disenchanted:)
Just read Spinning Silver and I liked it a lot! It was snowing while I read it so it was extra perfect and easy to imagine 😊

Sometimes I find standalone fantasy more intimidating than series, they have so much to do/live up to in just one book and that scares me 😹😭
Steel crow saga is a fun Asian inspired standalone that’s got animal companions and lots of political tension!
Yes I have read warbreaker and I so loved it that I have decide to read mistborn era 1 plus I read the shadows between us 🥰🤩😍🤗😁
