    • @KevinRothert
      @KevinRothert 2 года назад +2

      Barsk, though teeeechnically not a standalone, it is wrapped up really well as if it is one. It's a sci-fi about elevated animals and follows an elephant that can speak to the dead.

    • @andyoftheblacks9033
      @andyoftheblacks9033 2 года назад +4

      With all these mythology retellings, how could you not mention Circe by Madeline Miller? ;)
      I also suggest Sistersong (Arthurian inspired) and The invisible life of Addie LaRue (though this is not precisely a typical fantasy, but I would not know how else to categorize it).

    • @craigtyler7235
      @craigtyler7235 2 года назад +2

      This might be cheating but I would add Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky to the conversation. It is really short at just under 200 pages and technically sci fi, but falls in to the category of "what if your science was so advanced that the native population thought it was magic?" It handles some fantasy tropes, particularly that of the wise old wizard, in new and interesting ways IMO.

    The wolf in the whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky is criminally underrated, it follows an Inuit person born with their fathers soul in their body so it covers not only an interesting mythology as we start with inuit and have Norse raiders, but Omat has to come to terms and fully accept their genders (they choose both depending on their tasks as at the time it’s very segregated). I just read it last month after having it for years and I can’t believe I waited so long

    Excellent and better researched than most of these, thank you. I would also recommend other Neil Gaiman novels like Neverwhere, a total delight, and The Graveyard Book, a Jungle book retelling. I just read Piranesi and that would fit the bill in many ways. The Rithmatist, a middle grade by Brandon Sanderson, has such an interesting “magic” system. The invisible live of Adie Larue by Schwab also comes to mind. And I plan on picking up The library at Mount Char next, fingers crossed, it seems hit or miss with many.

    Could you suggest some vampire novels that are not romantically focused just business

    I feel people don't give Elantris enough credit because it isn't as good as the Stormlight Archive, when *many, many* books are not not as good as SA. It's kinda unfair to judge it that way. Like, it's a lot of talking and not much action, so that's a fair criticism, but overall, I loved it. 😁

      Elantris is a _good_ book, and yes it isn't action packed, but many people like books that aren't too action packed, including me, literature is best when we explore characters and themes and enjoy the writing, and yes Elantris is fast paced and Sanderson's a bit more amateur work, as it is his first book, but it is definitelly a _good_ book. Because Sanderson is a masterful writer people compare it to his other books but I agree that Elantris is a good read!

    I am in the middle of Elektra and enjoying it. Reminds me of The Silence of the Girls as far as telling the story from the female POV during the Trojan War.

      I enjoyed it and I think it helps to flesh out why Patroclus would love Achilles bc I know you felt that was an iffy storyline in The Song of Achilles (I still need to read that one!).

    Lately I'm getting vibes that you throw out the same videos with almost the same books but add 1 or 2 different books into the mix. I understand content creating around books can be challenging when there is only a certain amount of books to go through that are your favs/recommended/classics/popular etc. I really enjoy your videos and I don't want this to be a negative thing, its more of a critique and I hope you understand.
    *Edited* Not saying you don't do different book content videos. I'm meaning more about the videos like 'Beginners to Advanced Fantasy Books' and 'Fantasy Standalones' 'Fantasy Recs' and then you go and watch them and its like watching your old videos all over again or you've mentioned the same thing in a different video etc. (Again I understand it would be very hard as a content creator to make things fresh and appealing for people like me who have watched you for a while and I appreciate the effort you put into your videos!)

    I'm interested in reading "the Wolf and the Woodsman"- I'm half Hungarian and as I read the sample, I noticed the author used a lot of real Hungarian words...it makes me curious and hesitant at the same time. As far as I know the author is not a native speaker, and it can be tricky to use a language that way. This is supposed to be a fantasy made-up country, right? So, using a real-world language can pull the reader out of the fantasy if they understand the actual words. Don't know if I explain that correctly. For example, she uses the word "Ördög" and explains in the same sentence that it is the God of the Underworld. And in my head, I'm just like "yeah, I know- it's literally Devil in Hungarian." I don't know if it will bother me as the story continues or if it fizzles out.
