- The Crosley convertible coupe is a 2 cylinder microcar made in the early 40s, and we found one at an estate sale and had to buy it! The opposed twin Waukesha engine is an industrial engine used in equipment, and in WWII. Unfortunately, this one has over 16,000 miles and doesn't have much compression! In today's episode of CarsandCameras, we see if we can make this 80 year old micro run again.

I know a guy here in Indiana who was/is the go to guy for anything Crosley. He had a lot of parts for these, and he even reproduced lots of parts that weren’t available any other way. And back in vocational school, I knew a kid that had a Crosley station wagon that we rebuilt the engine in it. Lots of parts still available, and these are relatively rare. This car should not be hacked up! It deserves a full restoration.

@@kevinleee3408 I know a guy that had a 3-cylinder Kubota diesel and a Geo Metro. He claimed to get 150 miles per gallon of his homemade biodiesel and that the motor made 100 horsepower. These things are small. You could probably just use one of those Briggs& Stratton 3 cylinder diesels

My uncle in Nashville was a collector and restored crosley cars he had at least 3 completely restored ones he also had a belly tank racer with a crosley engine in it then he had one or two in the process of restoring along with his high school car, a Hudson hornet and a mustang motorcycle. But the crosley cars were his primary car to restore and they were drivers . Can probably get you in contact with some people who could help find parts . Unfortunately he passed a few yrs ago dearly missed for sure .
Guys just so you know a 1941 Crosley sells for $15.ooo to $18,ooo. Thats for a running and driving car. So before you start changing stuff.

Brake Info from the crosley auto club... The 1939 model had a floating band of brake lining between shoes and drum. In 1940 cars were equipped with mechanical brakes with riveted linings. In 1948, Crosley used bonded brake linings. In mid 1949, all Crosleys used the Goodyear-Hawley Hydra-Disc airplane type brakes. In mid 1950, Crosley switched to the 9 inch Bendix hydraulic brakes of conventional design.
Just pull it out and take it apart. Swap a good engine into it
I had an Onan 2 cylinder 20 hp opposed twin with a 3 speed transmission in a 3 wheel delivery van. They were also used for mail delivery and as meter maid carts in many cities. With minor differences in mounting points, I'll bet that there might be a reasonable amount of interchangeability.
You guys should DEFINITELY do a full restoration of this thing! I think it would be really cool to see this thing brought back to its former glory. It would be a nice change from the usual chopping and cutting you guys usually do to old stuff like this!
You said it correctly, Ike. Wild guessing that is a Prestolite distributor. There should be a metal plate on the distributor housing with the number.Ditto the starter and generator; things were meant to be rebuilt back then.
Distributor is an Auto-Lite IGW-4142A . Starter is an Auto-Lite MZ-4077. On a ’41 it should have a bar setup on top that engages it. The generator was an Auto-Lite GBM-4619-5.

It's ironic that yesterday my brother-in-law told me to go check out all the new pictures for the Dwarf Car Museum here in AZ. So I did, and so should you since you are now officially a collector. ;)
12 horsepower is a long way away at those compression numbers, but if it ran well it would have plenty of torque since it is opposed cylinder.

I've pull started my 1979 Subaru the same way with an almost dead battery. The little 1.6 liter engine is easier to pull start than my lawn mower.

Long term I'd like to see you rebuild the original engine. New rings, clean up the valve seats. See if you can get the compression up higher. Maybe the pistons are too sloppy?
They won't do that. They should. But they won't.
@@theone2be33 They can't help themselves. They should either rebuild that engine properly or give it to someone who can. They don't seem to have the skills to do anything properly. I realize that is the fun part of the channel but sticking a cheap Chinese lawn mower engine in this car is not the right thing to do.
Where would they get the parts to do that? There is no way they are sitting on the Autozone shelf, or any other shelf. Better to install a BMW motorcycle engine from the 60's or 70's. ) Also, perhaps a Honda Silverwing engine?

I agree with the comments suggesting the army flat four. That engine would be super cool, and sound excellent as well as giving a significant power boost.
seems like i remember my father mention time or two about crosley made a car.was just a kid an loved get my dad to talk about his childhood when i catch him in a good mood.he passed away at 83 in 2011
Trick for starting old engines that have sat for along time put some oil in the spark plug holes it will seal the piston to cylinder for initial starting
Absolutely. Without any lubrication for probably 60+ yrs . All components should have been checked and lubed, levels checked, carb at least cleaned, fuel system checked and cleaned or aux supply tank used in addition to the cleaning of the points and shaft lubed along with all bolts needing removed. Failure to do any of this it's almost a certainly going to lead to damage of hard to find parts, head aches and higher expenses! 💯
Remember this is a horizontally opposed flat head engine. The spark plugs are not directly over the piston, nor will the oil flow down the pistons.
@@richj120952 you do it piston TDC doesn't matter horizontal or vertical cylinder as you only need a little bit in the cylinder moving the piston in the bore will spread the oil around the piston and rings... I have 2of these engines complete sitting in storage right now and yes the are in good working condition
A cousin of mine was a collector of these... His family owned the dealer in our local area... They sold appliances and the cars right out the same building... The cars were designed to be cheap and to fit out the same double doors as the appliances went thru. I agree with several on here saying keep her original!! Very rare find.

I think you should pull the engine and overhaul it. You can find parts that will work if they are from a lawn moore, airplane, water pump it doesn’t matter but something is available to make it run. Use that engine and keep it factory where possible. Restored it might be worth a mint?

The Crosley Auto Club has their national meetup in the town where I live every year. During that week, you see these driving around all over town.
Ike, you nailed it with your original premise! Mr. mouse climbed into the exhaust pipe and ended up at the exhaust valve...where he stored his nuts. Automotive archeology at its best!

Might be a bit big of a car for the surplus motor. Would be too heavy for an entertaining video
put a eletric fuel pump on it with a small tank !!! for testing. the brake clean worked fine near the start. the starter just replace the brush points !!! and the connect rails and disc you can make yourself. but brushes try and find them from something bigger and sand/grind them down to fit !!! old drills might have what you need !!! and maybe some new slots in the main core if need be !!! use it till the end !!!

Hey, you guys actually hardened that copper gasket, the annealing process works backwards for copper. You should do the changing colors thing, and as it's that hot, you quench it in water or oil. Only reason I know is because I reload ammo for my sks.
You can leave one wheel on the ground to make an open diff drive the motor by driving the wheel and the Citroen 2CV is the closest since that motor seems to be designed after it
A lot of engine manufacturers were building flat twin engines before the 2CV was conceived, mostly for motorbikes (E.G. BMW, from whom Citroen used watercooled engines in the early 2CV prototypes), but this car really is very reminiscent of the 2CV in so many ways though... :)
Fix it and keep it ALL original! That is a true piece of history and very rare. You can source parts for it if you really try. Try Service Motors in Twelve Mile, In. If Butch does not have what you need he might just know where to look.

Pull the engine and dig into it. I think you can find parts if you ask some of the people suggested in the comments. They are collectible. Might be worth it! Would love to see future videos of this!
I think a little 3 cylinder Kubota diesel would be pretty cool in that car. If you're able to fit one along with a cooling system in it. :)

@@afberglund2764 My little Massey Ferguson tractor has a 3-cylinder diesel in it and it looks pretty compact to me. Of course I don't know how big this car actually is in person or how much space there is where the engine goes. If they want to stick with an apposed twin they might have to go looking for a Briggs of some kind. Or they could look for an old Kubota tractor from the 70's that has a little 2-cylinder diesel in it. Those were rated for 18hp. :)
For a possible starter substitute I would look into a ford 8N tractor starter they are 6 volt and look to be close in size to what you need. It might not be perfect but I might just do the trick.
Guys, please consider restoring this vehicle and not changing out the engine. You have one of what is believed to be less than 40 of these particular vehicles left in the world, and yours is in amazing and mostly complete condition. I own one just like it. Please contact the Crosley club for help in bringing this vehicle back to its original glory. It would be a shame to modify it from its original form. The club would be more than happy to help you find the parts you need including a starter.
I really hope they consider this because it would be awesome to see these fully restored
Here is some info on your engine The Model 150 Twin Cub Engine
Waukesha’s Cub Twin Model 150, was an opposed, two-cylinder, air-cooled, L-Head, horizontal pan-cake engine with a bore and stoke of 3.000 x 2.750, displacing 38.9 cubic inches, with a bare engine rating of about 14 hp at 3,200 rpm. It was also built with a 2.500 in. bore and cid of 35.3 cid (Model 151). The engine was originally designed to power orchard sprayers. However, many of the over 12,000 built between 1938-44, were used in the pre-war (1939-42) Crosley mini-cars and the military during WWII, some of which were also used for Auxiliary Power Units (APU).

Look around for a starter from a regular car from that timeline like you mentioned, and maybe you'll get lucky.
Check out Toro, Scott, Tecumseh and other large mowers.
The distributor cap was not for a 4-cylinder or two cylinder. It was to make the cap last longer. You could spend the distributor around and set it up so number one was 90 ° out and then you can run on the other side of the distributor cap when it wore out. It was part of crossley sales pitch

Just a little Crowley info for you guys. The 4 cylinder Crosley didn't have a removable head. You couldn't blow a head gasket,...so they raced them, pushed them hard and they would blow, but I guess you could get a lot out of them before they went. I believe that they were popular in boats. I've only seen one, and it had a rod coming out the side of the block.

Finally I love the mini cars
One thing that would help to make that engine run would be a mixture of acetone and two stroke oil. Mix it at probably about 50:1 and it would make that engine pop to life, and it would help to restore compression.
I suggested a while back to put the military diesel engine in the King midget but John mentioned diesel so put it in the Crosley

I seen a 427 put in Chevy Vega, so I believe it would fit. There's definitely going to have to be some modifications done, it be worth trying since there going to have to pull the motor anyway.

I would love to see you guys do a proper rebuild of that original engine, maybe increase the compression a little, bore it. Make it a really clean original piece. Would be way cooler than putting a modern engine in.

Boy do I get a kick outta the most unique projects. Me and Issac must have been best buds in a past life. I can't ever let these qurkie gems that any sane person only sees a hopeless nonsensical idea within somebody else's garbage just rot away to nothing. These huge imposible headaches found in builds are the best projects of all. And truthfully the most rewarding

I love the little Crosley 😍. I have seen this version before but never knew they were built pre-war.
NEVER lean or pull on the windshield frame ! (ask me how I know).
Before I finish the video , I'm thinking the engine lock is carbon-locked .. happens when a coked up motor is stored , moisture fluffs up carbon which then "grows".. next time the piston goes to TDC , It tries to Recompress the carbon .. stuck !
A cylinder full of your choice of something to free the rings up is a good idea and last , but not least , Crank Seals will be needed !

I had a 1952 or 53 Crosley station wagon as a kid . It was a field car. It had a 4 cylinder engine with a cobra on the oil filler cap. lol
You guys should look into investing in that Milwaukee board scope I love mine not only can you see straight down, but it has a camera on the side as well, so you can see the piston and then switch over and see the cylinder wall
Copper gaskets are normally used on high compression engines that have a fire ring around the top of each cylinder to help bite into the copper
Michelin stil make the ‘X’ (the original world’s 1st radial tyre) in a 125R12 that may fit the Crossley. Fit a set of those an it’ll ride like a Cadillac! (probably..)

My Dad used a Crosley front axle on our first Micro Midget in the early 1950s. It was too heavy, so he made a tube axle that worked fine.
V-tech VT153 high temp copper RTV gasket sealer is a great one to have around the shop ive used that stuff on many engines when im stuck and need to run highly recommend getting some

There is a guy that lives around our area. And he has one like that. And the engine is small and does really really good gas mileage. He wanted me to build a 5 gallon gas tank for him and customize it to fit at the location he wants it to fit. And i had him keep the thing at the shop so i can measure and stuff. And he took me and my oldest son about a week to fabricate it and build it. And he was happy how it turned out. And when he got it rebuilt and running. He took me for a ride and trust me getting in was not easy for being 6'5" 280 pounds average size built. And it road pretty good. And i drove it and was confusing at first but was easy. U shift it just like a four wheeler (using no clutch) It does have a hard top where it's easy to move and he has a soft top that folds down like a convertible does. It does get really really good gas mileage. And top speed with me in it weighing like 280 and him about 180 did dam good going up hill's. His has a radiator small one that i was able to repair easy for him and he was happy hearing i was able to repair it. When i drove it i was going up hill's and it did dam good. It does have a RPM gauge and i was like good. Cause i told him that u can't tell if u need to shift up or down by the sound. He asked if my son Justin would install a cd player with bluetooth and also 2 6X9 pioneer speakers. And it sounds good. His wife was like wow that's good. Seeing it all done and was shocked seeing the gas tank that i made and also was able to save the radiator. Hopefully u guy's get it running. And should rebuilt both of them the other one u have. And go on a long ride.
Such a cool little car can't wait for future videos with it.
My Grandfather had 5 or 6 of these mini cars, he built a gocart track for them when my mother was about 10. All ive seen are old pictures. I'd love to restore one of these, but I dont have the knowhow. Good luck to you guys!
11:28 Carb engines need a hot intake manifold or else fuel will come out of suspension and just pool there in the wintertime. The idea is that if fuel pops out of suspension on a hot manifold it will be instantly vaporized again and carry on as a reasonably burnable mixture.
Seems to work well in my 85 F150's 300cid I6, soo....
It worked well and is one of the reasons old carbed engines like this and your i6 got pretty good gas mileage.
@@octane613 My 71 Chevy C10 also has one...250...I havent put enough miles on it yet to truly get a handle on how it behaves though. Just barely have it revived. But ye that old Ford gave me 18-20mpg! The wide ratio 4spd manual and 2.49 rears helped, too, but ye.

Get two 4 inch drain pipes and build a roller stand big enough for the cart and the car or just run a dive chain to an engine or motor spool it up! Do up a couple cement anchors to hold the car in place and drop the clutch!

John you guys need to make a roller bumb start thing. Just two rollers that you can put the jump cars drive wheels on and the drive wheel of a minibike beside it. Gas it on the minibike and spin the dead cars wheels.
It is a cool car to add to your mini collection!! You should take the engine out and spec it, and try to find parts that would fit, especially after honing the cylinders. If you could find a motor of the correct size and gear, you have a starter. You have much better carbs, and I know that you could make an adapter!!

John & Issac, I am looking at what I have suggested to you. Martini Motors has designed a mini bike with a big ole Predator engine. And they will sale like crazy. Focus on your own creation. There's no telling how far you could go. Y'all have the skills proven many times.
A 750 0r 800 vulcan , great simple engines , easy and cheap to get. Usually for sale as a running motorcycle.
While a full restoration would be cool, I'd put a much more modern engine in it to double the horsepower. And once it's done, you can road trip it with the King Midget. That'd make for an awesome video!
Looks limited on space so a stage 2 420 predator might do the job. Im diggin the diesel motor too and it would be awesome if a company started making flywheels and rods for them. Thanks for another entertaining Wednesday.

Try to run the engine with 32:1 two stroke mix it will help keep everything lubricated maybe help loosen whatever is keeping it from making compression

While the heads are off should try and open the valves and clean the seats to make sure you get good compression

It would probably pull start with a squirt of 40w or Lucas in each cylinder, a working carb, steady spark, and a shot of either. The oil helps seal the rings, and the either burns better with low compression. Id sneak the distributer timing ahead and see if it starts. It might just😅
If you get it running, I would love to see yunz do a roadtrip with it. I always liked your older videos where you did roadtrips with some of your projects
There’s Crosley clubs around so picking up a starter and other parts should be fairly easy.
I think you should pull the engine and rebuild it. Like was mentioned previously, you can still get some parts for that little Waukesha twin, and maybe even a rebuilt distributor (or make new bushings for the original one). Either way, that's a pretty rare little car, and would probably be worth a pretty good chunk of change if it's restored, rather than butchered up. My uncle had a little bit later one.. a 1949 or 50 I think, and it was more of a mini-SUV looking body with a tiny 4 cylinder in it. No idea what kind or displacement. Hope you decide to save it!😉
A teacher of mine told of working at the Waukesha plant back in the day, and the firm made some big engines as well as, evidently, small ones. A mechanic was fond of showing off by sitting on a rocker arm of a running engine, and eating his lunch. They must have turned pretty slowly, lol.
When they get *really big* 12-30 RPM can get quite a bit of work done.
