@@5piece Hey got another wonderful idea for you that I have been seeing from other channels that I think you would succeed greatly in! If possible... engineer a song from start to finish! As others hear YOUR quality as your fans hear it... this would greatly solidify an certify What we already have confirmed from your skill set Which is phenomenal!!
After you process your VOX to where you like them, do you always add a VCA to sort of tie all the fx and libs together? Just asking if its a matter of practice. I usually add like 1.5-2db more compression with all the vox and fx together, but haven't tried it with a vca yet. Also the 1176s being backward has always been annoying. Lol just want the lords to know.
Your approach sounds correct to me! I always add SOME form of compression at the vocal group level, sometimes it’s a VCA and sometimes it’s something else (for example I really like the UAD Fatso on vocal groups - it really does make things fat😉)
It’s more about the concept and approach rather than the tool. I recommend trying a VCA compressor and shooting it out with another one or two non-VCA options to see what you like. It really depends and even for me changes but logically speaking, the VCA will offer a lot of control compared to the other types mentioned in this video. Let me know how it goes. Best of luck!!

I must be absolutely deaf, because I can never hear the difference when these compression plugins are activated.
Definitely harder to hear on smaller devices, and in general if you aren’t sure what to listen for as a whole.
I find an an easier way to hear compression is to pay attention to the transients (drums, guitars, keyboards) or the loudest components of a song and see if they sound softer or just different after applying compression.
It requires some active listening but I’m confident you’ll get there with practice. Worth noting that I compress very gently/transparently, so the difference is not always so drastic

Thanks. I'm on a desktop PC with an Asus audiophile-specific sound card (Xonar Essence XT) and a pair of Audio-Technica M40x headphones (flatter tuned than their somewhat more V-shaped M50x cousins). I'm sure it's a combination of RUclips murdering the audio and my lack of practice. Thanks for the tips! I have some ear training software that I need to get to sometime.
