- We get nasty and dirty and irreverent. Andrew Scheps may or may not approve. I'll ask him next time I see him.
These DBX 163X compressors are easy to come by:

Peace and be good to each other ✌️
Best 4-track content on RUclips IMO.
humbled Mr Paul thank you 🙏
I bought one of these compressors after seeing your video and together with a boss mini rack reverb it’s become my favorite device for mixing on my Tascam 424.
those Boss mini racks look awesome! I’ve never gotten my mitts on any 🙏🏻🙌🏻
what a perfect vibe omg besutiful
Rock on brother. Great stuff. Love that you're focusing on tape. You should add a patreon or something... you might get that camera holder you're wanting! LOL!
Sounding most excellent so far my dude :D
thanks for your kind words 🙏 🤘
That sound wonderful...espically with the Analog Tone the Tascam is giving it...your actual doing Tripple Compression with the Glue from the Tascam Porto
got a pair of these love them on kick and bass. Doing a recap definitely
improved the noise floor
super fun for that
❤. So I bid on one of these 163X. It's cheap if I win. Also, for electronic music from what I read, this was used on a lot of electro hip hop songs. It was either 163X or RNC compressor but RNC compressor is going to be 180 to 220.00. Besides, 1 slider? I'll take the 163X
i have two now! stereo bus 😂
I love the DBX 163X. I’ve got four of them that I use on drums and bass. Definitely want to try this on a mix. Great video, thanks for making it.
thanks for checking it out! i was inspired by Ryan over at Creative Sound Lab. check him out if you haven’t already!
@@MadeOnTape yes I’m subscribed to Ryan’s channel as well. He does some great stuff over there. Definitely enjoying your channel as well!! Keep it up!!👍🏻👍🏻
That’s actually very subtle and nice compression. No colors, brings the guitars up front s little oh so sweetly!
i got a second one! now they are linked and i have a stereo version!
That comb filtering sound on the snare kicked me off every time the compressor was engaged but nice “flava” indeed!
thanks for watching and listening!
Nice video! I have two of those 163x comps myself. I think I got one for $45 used at Guitar Center. (Do you ever frequent their used deals on line? They have some great deals on there!) I agree that, especially for their price, they're nice, versatile little compressors. In fact, I modified one after reading a thread where Jim Williams mentioned some things. However, after I, nor anyone else on homerecording.com, was able to reliably identify the modded vs. stock one in a blind A/B test, I decided to not bother modding my second one. I still have the parts and should probably just go ahead and do it so that they're matched, but it's hard to find the motivation when I couldn't tell the difference! :o)
yeah that makes sense! Yes I actually got this used from Guitar Center, too! It just definitely wasn't cleaned and its missing a couple screws lol
i want to sound like puff daddy comb
Love the videos! How do you create a physical "mix bus" with your portastudio?
thank you! I'm not sure what you mean? all of the channels come down and out through a left and right line output, which is technically the mix bus.
Are you referring to analog summing from digital? thanks for watching!
@@MadeOnTape thanks for replying. I mean how do you monitor whilst using the line outs as a 'mix bus'?
ahhh yes.... it depends on if I'm recording to the reels or into a DAW. In either case, I monitor from those so I can get the holistic sound as it's being recorded
nice demo!
i have an answer...how do you plug the machine to the compressor? I didn't understand...
the compressor is placed in the effects loop on the Porta Two.
so, that means take your “effects out” and run a 1/4” cable to the “line in” of the compressor. then take your “line out” of the compressor and insert it into the “effects return”
i hope this helps! let me know if you have questions and thanks for watching!
Hey Chris! I hope all is well man! Question 🙋♂️. If you do Parallel compression on the whole mix does that eliminate the need for a compressor on the two bus? I got a Mackie 32-8 Bus analog console, and it has left/right main inserts for a two bus compressor and 8 submaster inserts for parallel compression. I just don’t know if I should add a two bus compressor after doing the whole mix in parallel compression using a few different compressors. What are your thoughts?
great question! I'm going to give my long answer first, then a short one:
...with the Scheps style parallel compression, I believe the intention is more for an effect and "fullness" through saturation of a specific compressor. I personally always use a compressor on my 2-bus, even if very very lightly. The standard SSL compressor (I use the UAD version) truly is a wonderful glue.
these days i don't use parallel compression very often. It was a fun experiment, and I think I've used it a couple times in the box since...
the short answer: neither me or Andrew Scheps has your set up or ears or intention, so I would experiment with both! Cheers!
@@MadeOnTape Thank you man! I’m just gonna swap around the compressors in different setups on the console, and see what type of sounds I get. So far, I’m loving all three compressors in the submaster section without a two bus compressor but, I will try directly in the tracks inserts, with the ART Pro VLAii on the two bus, and see how that sounds. I really appreciate it my friend. Keep your awesome videos coming! Love your work dude!
@@The-Jim-Miller-Project enjoy! thank you for the kind words! I have a bunch of cool videos shot but not edited... life is catching me off guard left and right, but I'm hoping to get back into a flow soon.
How are you connecting the PortaTwo and the dbx together?
i’m just running the DBX through the effects loop via 1/4” line cables. So, this technique only works during mixdown
@@MadeOnTape You're okay with it being mono only, right?
Mark Williams yes! that’s the kicker with this set up. that’s also why when i actually mix down i’m blending it in barely. It’s not the ideal Scheps style but it does something
It's something I'd like to try at some point but I don't want to have to use two effects sends (I only have two) on a stereo compressor.
it all depends on what you’re going after. No right or wrong way in music
