- Another awesome Topaz mix video, this time using the dbx 163X on a vocal and outboard reverb from the Yamaha Rev500. The song mixed in this video is The Air from The Completeists 2016 album, Songs for Cats. Also used is the LA Audio 4X4 compressor on the kick and snare tracks.

This is different Than anybody else in RUclips land 😍🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I’m trying to show some of the gear that’s out there that not everyone talks about. People can make unique and good sounds with this gear and I try to show videos of a lot of different used consoles and gear
Finally someone has a channel that doesn’t involve laptops or plugins. Thanks man I needed this
Thank you I'm glad you like it!. Analog gear is what started it all and I like the way it sounds and works. Thanks again!
I bought a 163x in the late 80's and it sat in my bass rig for many years. Now I'm using it in my studio. Great piece m, works well on everything especially bass.
I agree. Its great on bass but also does a great job on snare and toms. I wish I had another one for a pair.
I also use Tape plugins when I "Master". Love the SLATE. And its nice to see guys using real analog!
I love the Slate VTM too! Softube Tape is really good too. I used to use actual tape for years and still miss the sound but the plugins are pretty good!
I bought this unit years ago from a thrift store but some components inside were burnt. I did a "burr brown" mod and it works really nice, I use it a lot more than I thought I would.
It's a useful compressor for sure. It sounds like a dbx and is easy to use. Maybe I should think about mods but I want to get another one to have a stereo pair first.
Sounds good. What was the signal chain for tracking the vocal? Thanks!
Thank you! The vocal was recorded with a Rode NT1, the original version using the Topaz preamps. It wasn't compressed when tracking so the dbx was the only compression used on the vocal.
@@TwinCreekAudio Awsomesome sound. Loving the analog goodness! Keep up the good work! Peace.
Better tone/character and color on the DBX vocal. Warm too. Smooth but harder than a LA2A or Chandler Tube compressor but I'd use a tube pre to see if I could get best of both words sound wise.. Kinda sounds like a warmer version of the 160a/x compressor on VOX. I just got the 163x in the mail and cant wait to fire it up! Excellent video!
Thank you! I didn’t get the 163X for vocals but it does a pretty good job. I love it on bass
Niceee
Thank you!
