  • The Soundtracs Topaz Project 8 console works very well for analog parallel compression. In this video, I demonstrate the use of the buses on the Topaz(or any console with buses) for parallel compression using 2 outboard compressors. The song being mixing is Blue Crystal from my 2017 album, 13 Channels.

      Thank you! I’m always happy to make another analog mixing video with the Topaz. When I started recording, it was all analog consoles and tape machines. I use a DAW now but I apply the older analog skills I learned to make it more fun! And it sounds great too!

    Great video, very clear! I want to do the same thing with a soundcraft 200b. It has no inserts on the group outs. What do you think is the best way to do parallel compression then?

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  2 месяца назад

      You could Use an Aux send and then return the compressor output to an open channel. That's really the only way in the analog domain. You could also do parallel compression in the box and send the compressed submix to a pair of channels with the dry signals going to different channels to blend.

    Hello. I am also the proud owner of a Topaz Project 8. May I ask where the Main L and R mix going? are they going to your MOTU's? How about your group outputs? What are your channel assignment in the MOTU? Thank you so much.

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  3 года назад +1

      The main mix outputs are going back into the interface(MOTU 828 inputs 1 and 2) to capture the mix. I am not using the group outputs at all, only the inserts are connected to the compressor. There is no need to use the group outputs as the channel direct outs(tape out) can be switched to become a subgroups output with the switches at the top of the channels. The MOTUs 8 outputs are going to the tape in on the Topaz and then being mixed through the console and back to inputs 1 and 2. Thank you for your question. I have a series of Topaz videos and if you have any other questions, that may be useful or ask me and I will find the answer.

      @@TwinCreekAudio , thank you so much for the quick response. It cleared a lot of questions in my mind. If I may ask again, what is your mastering signal chain? is it ITB or are you mastering in analog?

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  3 года назад +1

      On the videos, there is only the analog mix that's printed during the video. I don't have a mastering chain other than bus compression but even that is only in a few videos. I balance the levels in the video but that's really all. I try to show how the analog gear sounds without changing anything so it's accurate to the way the gear actually sounds.

    how its the setup of the topaz ???

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  10 месяцев назад

      It's a fairly standard design for an 8 bus console. It's an inline recording console so it has a tape return for every channel and they can be merged for 48 inputs on mixdown with the 24 channel Topaz. I don't have mine anymore. They are getting pretty old and are a bit difficult to service. I made a couple of videos about setting up a Topaz that should describe in detail how to connect one to an audio interface. I also have the manual somewhere in my files.

      I don't remember what song this was. I'm not s great drummer and I really don't make music to release anymore. I mainly just do RUclips videos about production which is what I'm better at. I do appreciate your comment. I'll have to go watch this video again to remember which song this was.

      @@TwinCreekAudio Well don't sell yourself short there man, you have a really cool voice doing some interesting note choices.
      Not "technically impeccable" by any stretch, but that shit doesn't matter.
      Really man, I'm a rather picky guy. The drums and general timing is all over the place, but the arrangement, songwriting and voice is quality. Sounds like it would fit perfectly into an indie/alternative/grunge'ish(not post-grunge) setting

      Thank you! 90s rock and classic rock has always been my main style of music. I've done some different things too but I mostly make short songs for video demos now. It's easier to get all the parts right when the song isn't as long. That song is from my 13 Channels album which is out of print now. A lot of that album uses samples drums so I could edit the MIDI but I didnt do that on this song as it was live drums. The MIDI drums I actually played on an electronic kit and edited from there. I was really rushed to finish it because I was starting a new job and needed to get it done before my time was taken up by work. Thanks again! I'm working on another album this summer but with a friend and we will probably try to find another drummer for that.

    Nice nice.. Just for my peace of mind: did you cabled the group compressor as an insert? Because I route my parallel compressing not that way..

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  3 года назад

      Yes, I connected compressors to the group inserts on the Topaz. How are you doing parallel compression if not with buses? I'm sure it can be done with aux sends too but I've always done it with buses.

    Hi , loving the videos! Quick question, I am
    Using my Topaz project 8 to run instruments through the mixer and out on the main L&R, and then straight into my DAW. The reason I do this is because I just want the sound of the mixer to be on my printed Track on the DAW. In your opinion, is the best way to get the mixer sound? Or should I run the instruments into the inputs and out of the tape outs ? ( then to DAW)

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  2 года назад +1

      Going through the channels and the main outputs is likely adding more of the consoles sound to the tracks as the signal is going through more gain stages in the console this way. If you wanted to track more than one thing at a time, the tape outputs would be useful for that and would still add some of the Topaz sound since you would still be using the mic preamps and the gain stages in the channel strip like EQ etc. Personally I like to use the tape outputs, because it prevents me from having to repatch things all the time. So it's more of a workflow decision for me. Hope that helps. Let me know how it goes and thanks so much for the comment. I'm glad people are finding my videos useful.

      @@TwinCreekAudio thanks for your reply! Makes perfect sense. I’ll carry on doing it this way then. Totally understand your comment regarding using the tape outs, makes more sense as I am endlessly plugging and unplugging currently haha! So I might use the tape out idea for some some channels.

      @@MLElf that sounds fantastic! Check out my Stevenson Interface Electronics mixer videos for a rare American vintage console. I'm afraid analog consoles are getting more rare and expensive. Soundtracs consoles still seem to be a good value and are well above average consoles. Make sure to let me know if you have any questions. Best of luck!
