the 70's was when pollution became a big topic, the EPA was formed, all the PSA from that time were about pollution like Woodsy Owl, just google 1970s pollution commercial. Geezer Butler who wrote most of the lyrics was pretty conscience of the state of the world back then, that's why he wrote song like Wicked World, War Pigs, Into the Void and so on...

I remember seeing an interview with Tony and he talked about how Dio had to adjust his singing and writing approach when he joined Sabbath. Dio wasn't used to all of the tempo changes and he said something to the effect of "you can't do that." Tony said, "what do you mean? We've been doing this for 10 years. It's what we do."
It’s a shame there was a clash of strong characters there. Because Dio made only four albums with Sabbath, and was with them for less than 5 yrs in total. 3 of them are brilliant and one is pretty good. This isn’t an Ozzy/Dio thing, btw; Ozzy made 6 cracking albums in a row with them.

You have absolutely no idea how happy you've just made me, this is my favourite song of all time, whenever I feel down this album and this song in particular puts a huge smile on my face, so thank you from one old but happy headbanger.
FYI, it was the bassist "Geezer" Butler who is the foundation for Sabbath's music as he was the primary songwriter for the band and chances are, if you have a favorite Sabbath song, Butler wrote it.
I think a lot of people listening to Sabbath in the current era, miss the whole cold war aspect in which these songs were written. The Final Suicide lyric is talking about nuclear Armageddon.
What's crazy is how someone can create a genre. Tony heard Jimmy H and The Beatles, and you get Black Sabbath. Dimebag hears Van Halen, Sabbath, Priest, Metallica/Megadeth and he creates Groove metal. Then you have Korn who hears it all and creates New Metal. It's just mind blowing to me. And LL Cool J changed the rap game, and N.W.A took it from there.
My favourites are Under the Sun, Snowblind, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath & Children of the Grave. I heard in a documentary that Tony Iommi had a cupboard full of “cassette tapes” with dozens of riffs on each one. Mind blowing!

Imagine being about 14 years old and most of the music that you've ever heard in your life up to this point was AM top 40 hits! Then one day you hear some Black Sabbath on a jukebox, at a little candy store with a pinball machine that you used to play on, and you look at your friends and you say wow, what did I just hear??? And the rest as they say is history!!

This song was written right around the time that 'Tricky Dick' Nixon was creating the Environmental Protection Agency.
There is some form of a Sabbath influence or sound in almost every rock band who ever existed since Sabbath formed. They heavily influenced bands for decades and are still influencing new bands today. It seems crazy they still have an impact on bands 50+ years later but its true. They are the creators and founders of heavy guitar music and spawned so many heavy bands since. It is just simply incredible. Sabbath should have a movie about their story. It would be a huge Hollywood success without a single doubt. Sabbath are so much more than just a band. They are a legendary force of nature who survived decades of challenges -pitfalls- criticism - line up changes- accidents - and so much more.

I've seen them live in 1969 and again 1970 and I tell my grandchildren and anyone who'll listen that Iommi, Ward, Butler and Osbourne were the best!

Master of reality was released July 21st 1971. Led Zeppelin IV was released November 8th 1971. Black Sabbath is the most overlooked band from the British metal invasion. Tony Iommi also plays with no fingertips on his left hand. He used banjo strings, and invented drop-d tuning to be able to play. Amazing man, and the GOAT!
It is so refreshing to hear your appreciation of the magnitude of Mr. Iomms talent. Journalists used to mock this band, called them talentless. Three chord dinosaurs. As Sori stated, he put two to three songs into one. Another thing that is underestimated about Tony, his lead work. It is truly melodic, at times beautiful and always relevant. You are correct Vin. He is truly a genius.

It's not often an entire genre is born in one moment. Black Sabbath did that. Then, everything they did up until Sabbath Bloody Sabbath spawned different directions in metal that are accelerating faster than ever today.

My take on it is this: All ”heavy” or ”proto metal” stuff in the 60s and early 70s was very rooted in the blues. Sabbath took the blues to the next level an ignited something. They made the blues so damn heavy and raw. They never called themselves heavy metal in the beginning. Another band did though. The band that was the first band to do a purely new genre, Heavy Metal, and didn’t do blues (but were deeply influenced by it) was Judas Priest. Discuss! :)
Priest certainly took the metal banner and ran with it. They proudly call themselves a heavy metal band while other bands would whine about "being categorized".
Without a doubt the most important inspirational and influential metal band in history. Almost the majority of metal sub genres have been influenced by Sabbath. But as great as Iommi is I think Terry Geezer Butler is as important in the mix of innovative dark and moody metal that is Black Sabbath. Then take Ozzie's lamenting and scornful voice and add Bill Wards mental jazz beats and we have the most special recipe for a metal band ever. Without Sabbath there would be no Metallica or Maiden Slayer Venom Bathory etc etc . Also dark and esoteric lyrics by Geezer Butler must of been other worldly in a time where The Beatles and the Stones where the lyrics of the moment.. IMHO that era of Sabbath is untouchable and later lineups just don't have the same impact. Children of the grave is the most amazing song to me but I can't even begin to imagine what Black Sabbath- the first album must of sounded like to a fifteen years old kid experiencing post rationing grim and depressing Britain and hearing that dark and atmospheric beginning. And fifty years later sounds as good as it's ever been. Black Sabbath flying the 🇬🇧 for innovative British music and providing a soundtrack for countless generations worldwide. Truly exceptional music from a truly exceptional band 🏴🇬🇧🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
not only did Tony have no one to take inspiration from when they started... he came at it from a jazz/blues background. check out the live version of Wicked World on Live At last and you'll see just how good these guys were respect :)
Iommi's tone in the first 6 albums was the result of a "happy" accident. The loss of the tips of his two middle fingers made him use prosthetics. In doing so, he had to put an extra strain on the strings, and apply more pressure because he couldn't feel them. That alone altered the sound of his guitar to a great extent. His trill technique (combination of hammer-on and pull-offs), also sounds like no other guitarist, because the material on the tip of his fingers is adding even more distortion. You won't get the same result when you're using your own skin. I know that because I'm a guitarist and one day I wanted to experiment and tried to make for myself the same prosthetics that Tony used, and when I did, the sound was completely different. Another major reason for Iommi's sound was the Dallas Rangemaster treble-booster pedal that Tony used. In two recent interviews for Gibson TV, Tony said that in the mid 60's, o local guy in Birmingham modified his pedal and it sounded better than ever. ruclips.net/video/LN2FYIhGwaA/видео.html Last but not least, one must not underestimate the contribution of Ward's drumming to the whole Sabbath sound. He is a fantastic drummer. His sense of swing, groove and Jazzy background contemplate Iommi's heavy riffing perfectly. Put any other drummer behind the kit and those heavy riffs loose a lot of their power.
Dear Vin and Sori I just discovered a song Black Sabbath did called Simptom of the Universe 🙏 it is for the most part what they usually do but at the end of the song it becomes a beautiful jazz-like acoustic love song. It is remarkable. I have heard them do soft acoustic work before. Which leads me to say they could have done any type of music they choose do.😊😊♥️ With respect to you both Brant Heavner 😊♥️♥️
There is a film that is similar to this song, were people are trying to leave earth on a ship they built, to escape a global disaster, but they argue who is going and who gets left behind. I think it came out in early 50s and was in colour. I think it was called When Worlds Collide, saw it on TV a couple of times.

The thing that most surprises me in this song is not rhythm/measure changes (it was a lot other Sabbath songs) but slight fastening/slowing they do during song. No radical change but everybody plays next tact 10-15 bpm faster then slower then again faster. Simultaneously. Fascinating
Vin let me see if I could try to give you a little bit of perspective as to why these musicians from that time were so innovative and unique and genius! The world musically in the 1960s was like The Lawrence Welk Show kind of and maybe with a little bit of Soul Train and American Bandstand type of a vibe! Everything was geared towards top 40 AM radio play! But then a generation of guitarists that were heavily influenced by old Southern Blues from the poor areas of the South, stuff like Leadbelly and blind lemon, began to create the music that we know as rock and roll and its Offspring, heavy metal. It was indeed wonderful to have been alive to watch the transition of what happened to music in those days!!! I hope that sheds a little bit of light on to your questions and Curiosities

The greatness of Iommi is in his songwriting. For 50 years he is relentless and until 2013 he wrote great sabbath albums with different vocalists. The other great one is Ritchie Blackmore. Listen to deep Purple In Rock 1970.

Saw them during the Mastery of Reality tour 1972, this was the gods for us kids at that time.

Master of reality was released July 21st 1971. Led Zeppelin IV was released November 8th 1971. Black Sabbath is the most overlooked band from the British metal invasion. Tony Iommi also plays with no fingertips on his left hand. He used banjo strings, and invented drop-d tuning to be able to play. Amazing man, and the GOAT!

It is so refreshing to hear your appreciation of the magnitude of Mr. Iomms talent. Journalists used to mock this band, called them talentless. Three chord dinosaurs. As Sori stated, he put two to three songs into one. Another thing that is underestimated about Tony, his lead work. It is truly melodic, at times beautiful and always relevant. You are correct Vin. He is truly a genius.
Disagree with you on his lead work, barely adequate to uderwhelming . I always thought if you combined Iommi's riff writing with Blackmores leads, especially combined with Dio's voice, the universe would stop yo listen.
@@robertperrotto870 awesome take. Both Legends. I however agree to disagree. Mr. Iommi was not going for shred. He was about the entire composition. Not that Blackmore wasn't, he was phenomenal. Just a little more self indulgent. For proof of that statement. Compare a live album of either Deep Purple or Rainbow to Sabbath. A tad long in the tooth was Mr. Blackmore. Love em both. YES!!!!!! You get it!!!!! Tony, Geezer and Bill were PHENOMENAL musicians...........and together they were even better.........but EVERYTHING they did started with Tony.......the riffs he CREATED.
I think there are better lead guitarists than Tony Iommi, but when it comes to riffs, he surely is The Greatest of All Time! 🤗 ..but to me, the rhythm section of Geezer Butler & Bill Ward is of equal importance to the signature Sabbath sound; actually Bill Ward at his prime is probably my favorit drummer ever...❤

It's not often an entire genre is born in one moment. Black Sabbath did that. Then, everything they did up until Sabbath Bloody Sabbath spawned different directions in metal that are accelerating faster than ever today.
Jimi and Tony were both INNOVATORS.
Jimi was psychedelic blues. Tony was heavy blues/jazz...that turned into METAL. Iommi is the GOD OF RIFF.
Lord Jesus I almost had a heart attack “a 3.5” Sori. I have RUclips Premium which allows me to listen to YT with my screen off to save battery and so I’ll just listen to your review as oppose to watching it sometimes. I immediately stopped what I was doing and woke up my screen in disgust to re watch the “3.5” and then saw Sori’s wink. Then and only then was my universe back in order. Lord have mercy Sori you almost gave me a heart attack 🤣

My take on it is this:
All ”heavy” or ”proto metal” stuff in the 60s and early 70s was very rooted in the blues. Sabbath took the blues to the next level an ignited something. They made the blues so damn heavy and raw. They never called themselves heavy metal in the beginning. Another band did though.
The band that was the first band to do a purely new genre, Heavy Metal, and didn’t do blues (but were deeply influenced by it) was Judas Priest. Discuss! :)
Judas Priest was very close to being the originators. Both are awesome in my mind. Both in my top five bands.

Haha its morphed and crossed with others stuff but The quasi non blues scales Priest album is Defenders .
Priest certainly took the metal banner and ran with it. They proudly call themselves a heavy metal band while other bands would whine about "being categorized".
Without a doubt the most important inspirational and influential metal band in history. Almost the majority of metal sub genres have been influenced by Sabbath. But as great as Iommi is I think Terry Geezer Butler is as important in the mix of innovative dark and moody metal that is Black Sabbath. Then take Ozzie's lamenting and scornful voice and add Bill Wards mental jazz beats and we have the most special recipe for a metal band ever. Without Sabbath there would be no Metallica or Maiden Slayer Venom Bathory etc etc . Also dark and esoteric lyrics by Geezer Butler must of been other worldly in a time where The Beatles and the Stones where the lyrics of the moment.. IMHO that era of Sabbath is untouchable and later lineups just don't have the same impact. Children of the grave is the most amazing song to me but I can't even begin to imagine what Black Sabbath- the first album must of sounded like to a fifteen years old kid experiencing post rationing grim and depressing Britain and hearing that dark and atmospheric beginning. And fifty years later sounds as good as it's ever been. Black Sabbath flying the 🇬🇧 for innovative British music and providing a soundtrack for countless generations worldwide. Truly exceptional music from a truly exceptional band 🏴🇬🇧🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

My favorite Black Sabbath song!!
Iommi's tone in the first 6 albums was the result of a "happy" accident. The loss of the tips of his two middle fingers made him use prosthetics. In doing so, he had to put an extra strain on the strings, and apply more pressure because he couldn't feel them. That alone altered the sound of his guitar to a great extent. His trill technique (combination of hammer-on and pull-offs), also sounds like no other guitarist, because the material on the tip of his fingers is adding even more distortion. You won't get the same result when you're using your own skin. I know that because I'm a guitarist and one day I wanted to experiment and tried to make for myself the same prosthetics that Tony used, and when I did, the sound was completely different. Another major reason for Iommi's sound was the Dallas Rangemaster treble-booster pedal that Tony used. In two recent interviews for Gibson TV, Tony said that in the mid 60's, o local guy in Birmingham modified his pedal and it sounded better than ever.

Last but not least, one must not underestimate the contribution of Ward's drumming to the whole Sabbath sound. He is a fantastic drummer. His sense of swing, groove and Jazzy background contemplate Iommi's heavy riffing perfectly. Put any other drummer behind the kit and those heavy riffs loose a lot of their power.

Dear Vin and Sori I just discovered a song Black Sabbath did called Simptom of the Universe 🙏 it is for the most part what they usually do but at the end of the song it becomes a beautiful jazz-like acoustic love song. There is a film that is similar to this song, were people are trying to leave earth on a ship they built, to escape a global disaster, but they argue who is going and who gets left behind. I think it came out in early 50s and was in colour. I think it was called When Worlds Collide, saw it on TV a couple of times.
"This guy started it all, man. Good Lord!" Yup. As I keep repeating, 50 years later and this is still as fresh sounding and heavier than anything out there today. Proto-metal, sludge, grunge--err no not that, doom, whatever, it's f#*ken metal and will forever kick ass.

The thing that most surprises me in this song is not rhythm/measure changes (it was a lot other Sabbath songs) but slight fastening/slowing they do during song.
No radical change but everybody plays next tact 10-15 bpm faster then slower then again faster.

Vin let me see if I could try to give you a little bit of perspective as to why these musicians from that time were so innovative and unique and genius! The world musically in the 1960s was like The Lawrence Welk Show kind of and maybe with a little bit of Soul Train and American Bandstand type of a vibe! Everything was geared towards top 40 AM radio play! But then a generation of guitarists that were heavily influenced by old Southern Blues from the poor areas of the South, stuff like Leadbelly and blind lemon, began to create the music that we know as rock and roll and its Offspring, heavy metal. It was indeed wonderful to have been alive to watch the transition of what happened to music in those days!!! I hope that sheds a little bit of light on to your questions and Curiosities

Iommi brought a heaviness and darkness in tone that had never been heard.

The greatness of Iommi is in his songwriting. For 50 years he is relentless and until 2013 he wrote great sabbath albums with different vocalists. The other great one is Ritchie Blackmore. Listen to deep Purple In Rock 1970.
