The original Sabbath is the greatest thing that ever happened to this planet lol. This is my favorite riff (Also Eddie Van Halen's..at least at one time. VH backed them up in '78). Never really looked at Sabbath from a drummers perspective, but thanks for pointing every little thing out in detail, just shows how GREAT this band is from A to Z
This brings me back to the summer of 2004. Ozzyfest outside of Boston. Last band of the night, Black Sabbath. I remember shaking my buddy next to me and screaming, INTO THE VOID. I was so excited they were playing this one. Love this song. The whole original line up too. Bill Ward decided to play with them in 2004. Was so awesome.

I'm so glad to see Bill Ward get the love and appreciation he deserves. He's been one of my favorites for as long as i've been into music. Wicked World is another great song to check out, if you haven't already.
What makes Bill Ward so great, and almost impossible to replicate, is his machine-like precision, mixed with that deep, deep Jazz base he has, and his uncanny ability to mix them to just… squeeze notes. They just sound dirty.
the way ward ties everything up perfectly. as henry rollins once said black sabbath has the best rhythm section. the joy in your face when the song takes off awesome
Part of the reason i love Sabbath is most of their songs are 2/3 songs knitted together. The constant tempo change is amazing and Bill and Tony's Jazz influences shine through all the time. Loved this band for 50 years.
Love Sabbath for 40ish years now and love Grunge too, it's so satisfying having my suspicions confirmed by musicians and smart people, that this is some really great music
Master of Reality the heaviest album ever from beginning to end originally sold over 3 million copies Bill Ward percussionality love 💕 your reaction to these masterpieces Reminds me when l first heard them. And playing these songs when I was in school 🏫 Sabbath Forever
Wow !! I always loved Bill Ward's drumming, one of my Fave along with Ginger Baker. I loved sabbath from the beginning 1969. I'm 74 years young. I bought the first album and listened to it and went back and bought 4 more and finally wore them all out !!, and bought the whole Sabbath Catalog on CD. Great video I was amazed with the software and almost mesmerized bt it. Loved your energy too. Keep it up !!
I been waiting for this reaction, I knew Bill was gonna get you. He has said that it took him a while to figure out what to do with this song, and what we ended up with was a masterclass.
Bill Ward is so underrated, the guy is a genious, loved the breakdown so cool to get your perspective on him and great to see that Sabbath is your favourite, better late than never I say, I've been listening to Sabbath since the late 80's, there music is just so hypnotic and soothing but heavy at the same time 👌👍
I think the Sabotage Technical Never Say Die albums are underrated not just the weird creativity but drumming expanding wise , creativity, original and some crazy stuff Bill is KILLING IT on thoses records
You can't imagine it. '71 was the year of the Temptations, the Osmonds, and the Bee Gees. When Sabbath dropped, it wasn't just different, it was *destructive.*
Welcome to the fold Andrew. I'm 48 years old and have been listening to Sabbath since I was born. It's as natural a part of my life as a musician as keeping time or keeping in tune. Once you become well versed, fluent, in Black Sabbath, it becomes the standard by which you judge all heavy music that has come since. Or maybe that's just me😉👍💪
To think that the drumming of Gene Kruppa, Buddy Rich and other Jazz greats are such great influences in the genesis of heavy metal just blows my mind. I'm 57 but I continue to appreciate the greatness of Black Sabbath even more. I have loved this band for over 40 years but I never really knew about all the heavy musical influences until I was much older and breakdowns like this really give so much insight. Thank you for another great breakdown!
You have officially completed Level 1 of Black Sabbath and now hold the rank of the "Inverted Cross". Congratulations! You have also unlocked Vol. 4 reactions: Snowblind, Supernaut, Under The Sun and Cornucopia, the latter song known for nearly breaking Bill Ward because of the difficulty he had in perfecting the challenging drum patterns.
Bill Ward is a friggin animal. He did a posedown on me in Reunion Arena in Dallas back in 97 after a full concert and get this. He had just underwent openheart surgery before the tour. LEGEND!!!
I thought for years that Sabbath could never be copied because of their "sloppy" timing--and that was a good thing. I remember thinking that Faith No More's version of War Pigs, although technically perfect, just sounded empty. Andrew, thank you for putting into context why. Your technical descriptions are fantastic. I am a non-drummer and don't know why drums sound different. You have opened up a new world. Bill Ward has swing! I used to think his timing was just not great, even amateurish, because he was just some bloke from the Mid-lands. Nothing could have been further from the truth. He is a highly informed drummer using techniques all those 80s and 90s drummers had no idea about. I need to get into jazz drummers more now...
Awesome to see Masters of Reality getting some love. It would be great to see Supernaut from Vol. 4 as well. I know you had a live version of Symptom of The Universe, but a studio version of at least one track from that album would be great too. Cover something from each album.
Great reaction. Bill Ward is such a great drummer. I've been a Sabbath/Ozzy fan since I was a kid in 1979. He was the first drummer I 'noticed' was using double kick stuff regularly. You should check out some of Tommy Aldridge's stuff. I feel he really helped evolve the double kicks in a hard rock setting through the late 70's and 80's. He's a brutally hard hitter and an amazing performer well worth checking out if you are not familiar with him. His drum live concert drum solos are (IMO) legendary.
I've listened to this song hundreds of times since 1971 when I purchased the album Master of Reality. One of my all time favorite Black Sabbath songs. Thanks for the reaction.
Into the Void is absolutely a landmark of music. Every single "reacting to Into the Void for the first time" I've ever seen has had the listener straight up get up and walk away. It's so GOOD.
I have long said Sabbath is not Sabbath without Bill Ward. The jazz elements he brings has never been replicated within Sabbath or Ozzy's career. Ward brought the boogie and I love it.
I'm glad you're loving Black Sabbath, they're so much more than Iron Man! I hope one day you do Fairies Wear Boots, it's one of my fav Sabbath songs and definitely my favorite one to play on drums!
One thing i can tell you about Sabbath......the music is timeless and it NEVER gets old! I still enjoy their music today as much as i did 50 effin yesrs ago! Love yer reactions to these slabs o metal. Those who dont like Sabbath have never really listened to Sabbath, and fell victim to all the brainwashing about how they were satanists. Its cool to see younger generations getting blown away by the same things that blew us all away back in the day. The four Sabs are like uncles to me. They have always been present in my life, and have changed it in so many positive ways. I shudder to think where the hell would we be today if Sabbath had never existed. Always remember this children: Black Sabbath Matters!!! BSM! BSM. Nuff said. Q. If you borrow money from a friend, you mite give them an IOU. If you borrow money from yerself, then what mite you give to yerself? A. An Iommi.
My man. I've watched a lot of different reactor's videos pretty regularly for a long time now, and you're the only one I've subscribed to just because of the 100k-by-your-birthday promise of twerking to Into The Void for a full minute. Out of principle won't unsub if you keep this promise.
Never too late to hear great music. For me first time hearing Black Sabbath was when my dad got me the Best of Black Sabbath 2CD in 2000. I was only 14, and their music just blew my mind, just like it blew yours in 2022 :)
Watching this with you made me go back to when I first got in the Black Sabbath and how groundbreaking it was. Like a kid in a candy store. Smiling from ear to ear. It just doesn't get any better
Had to subscribe, been watching since the first Sabbath video, been a fan of Bill from the first listen and your enthusiasm and break down of his drumming is awesome. Thanks my friend
April 2022? Jesus guy i got hooked when i was 8 years old in 2005. Thats worse than saying you've never heard tool until 2022. As a multi-instrumest for nearly 20 years, im surprised you hadn't heard this song up to this point. Its a masterclass in silky drumming and stanky riffs. Its so schwangy and groovy, its simple but it does the job. It makes me shiver every time i hear it. Black Sabbath is king.
The drummers of this time Paice, Bonham, Mitchell all came from a jazz background and Bill Ward was no exception. The first drummer he tried to emulate was Gene Krupa and this carried throughout his years in Black Sabbath where you can hear him swing even on the heavier tracks but more so on songs like Air Dance on Technical Ecstasy, a throwaway album for many but personally I am a big fan. You even get some lead vocals from Bill.
Hi Adam. I have been a Sabbath fan since 71 Master of reality my first album. Got it same year it came out. Got Black Sabbath 70 Paranoid 70. Shortly after. I was 11 in 71. Have never looked back. Just forward with this unbelievably great band. All albums until 2013.
First heard this when the record came out and this song was the absolute highlight of the LP. I was about ten years old at the time and I still keep coming back to this in my early sixties... I would have loved Bill to be a part of the band even in the later periods, the original sabbath.
This is one of the greats. I love the cover Kyuss did of Into the Void, you should check it out, they pulled a "sabbath" twist in that middle bridge-like section. Amazing.
I watch quite a few reaction channels and I always love to see people reacting to my favourite bands. I love that you feel like this about Sabbath, they're my lifelong favourite band and I am still like a kid in a candy store listening to them.
Hey Andrew, thank you for your nice Videos! I've studied Bill Ward a lot, because he is one of my favourite Drummers. In my opinion he always reinvented his playing on every Album a little bit (so the whole Band did). For me, he had his peak between 1970 and 1972, but never lost his jazzy groove and vibe. A little hidden Trick of his playing: bill ward often plays a Note on the kick drum shortly before he plays the first Note on kick. And when he is not doing that, he thinks about that Note. It gives a kind of laid back feeling beside his general jazzy and even orchestral feeling. He also likes to change from the Ride Cymbal to the left crash (or hihat to right crash/crash ride) to hit the first Note, so its a longer way but a whole movement. Sorry for my bad english, i hope you are able to understand what i am talking about haha ... best wishes!

I saw that show in St. Louis. Judas Priest played right before Sabbath. Good times.
@@tylermorrison7051 Judas Priest was an awesome show too. I wasn't the biggest Priest fan at the time , but I certainly liked them a lot more after the show.
It’s INSANE how fresh this still sounds. It still sounds unique and HEAVY.
YESSS!!
Sabbath has been my favorite band since 1970. Glad you finally found them.
On the first album, Bill is sounding even more jazzy. Sabbath (Earth) used to play blues and jazz in bars.
The handbrake analogy is a perfect way to describe Sabbath’s amazing ability to change tempo
Yes. You love them now. I saw it.
This is beautiful. 🥰
Yup sure do
Master of Reality, one of the greatest metal albums ever.
🤘
I'm so glad to see Bill Ward get the love and appreciation he deserves. He's been one of my favorites for as long as i've been into music.
Wicked World is another great song to check out, if you haven't already.
I'll get to it Daniel!
What makes Bill Ward so great, and almost impossible to replicate, is his machine-like precision, mixed with that deep, deep Jazz base he has, and his uncanny ability to mix them to just… squeeze notes. They just sound dirty.
Grease.
He's like Bonham. Just got a beautiful humanity and grit to his playing
the way ward ties everything up perfectly. as henry rollins once said black sabbath has the best rhythm section. the joy in your face when the song takes off awesome
It’s amazing watching Andrew react to the pinnacle of musical achievement for the first time.
Only song to this day that lights me up with goosebumps. Nice job breaking this down for all of us non drummers.
And playing these songs when I was in school 🏫 Sabbath Forever
master of reality sold over 5 million copies according to ChartMasters.
MOR is the greatest of Black Sabbath's early records, a notch above even Paranoid.
How are you a drum teacher and never heard of black sabbath? Mind blowing! Glad you’re listening to them now. Excellent band. Enjoy!
🙌
I been waiting for this reaction, I knew Bill was gonna get you. He has said that it took him a while to figure out what to do with this song, and what we ended up with was a masterclass.
I was waiting to see your reaction when they went into the breakdown and it did not disappoint. That riff is so dirty it gives me chills every time
100% Collin
Bill Ward is so underrated, the guy is a genious, loved the breakdown so cool to get your perspective on him and great to see that Sabbath is your favourite, better late than never I say, I've been listening to Sabbath since the late 80's, there music is just so hypnotic and soothing but heavy at the same time 👌👍
I think the Sabotage Technical Never Say Die albums are underrated not just the weird creativity but drumming expanding wise , creativity, original and some crazy stuff Bill is KILLING IT on thoses records
This came out in 1971! Imagine what people must have thought of how heavy this was in the time of peace and love.
💯
You can't imagine it. '71 was the year of the Temptations, the Osmonds, and the Bee Gees. When Sabbath dropped, it wasn't just different, it was *destructive.*
Heavy Metal is the bastard child of the hippie dream.
Or maybe that's just me😉👍💪
EXACTLY. Sabbath is absolutely INSANE. It's so amazing.
When riff #2 kicked in.... THAT is reaction i wanted to see :)
🙌
When I heard Sab songs when these albums came out I'd always think; He could've made another song off that riff! There's 3 or 4 in each song!
I love watching people encountering Sabbath for the first time.
It lets me remember my exposure so many years ago.
Loved them since their first Album 'Black Sabbath' in 1970 - never tire of them.
Bill Ward doesn't wear his influences on ANYTHING....He IS THE INFLUENCE !!!...The MOST UNDERRATED drummer EVER !!
Thank you!
Yes on the timeline this stuff is very close to the bop and hard bop jazz stuff of the day
Andrew Rooney Drums I wish I were more fluent in music, but you explain things easy for lay people to understand.
I know this is mostly about Bill, but Geezer's tone on this track is maybe my all time favorite bass tone ever.
There are no words, you just have to listen...the whole album is a masterpiece!
Correct!
Bill Ward is a friggin animal. He did a posedown on me in Reunion Arena in Dallas back in 97 after a full concert and get this. He had just underwent openheart surgery before the tour. LEGEND!!!
Bill Ward - The subtle master that most people who don't play drums will never get
I thought for years that Sabbath could never be copied because of their "sloppy" timing--and that was a good thing.
Always the same excitement each time you cover Black Sabbath!
Dude this channel is awesome!!! Quickly becoming one of my favs! Thanks for the upload and quality content 😎🤘👽
Awesome, thank you!
Stoked you did this one this is probly every sabbath heads favorite sabbath song
I've listened to this song hundreds of times since 1971 when I purchased the album Master of Reality. One of my all time favorite Black Sabbath songs. Thanks for the reaction.
Thanks Thomas
Into the Void is absolutely a landmark of music. Every single "reacting to Into the Void for the first time" I've ever seen has had the listener straight up get up and walk away. It's so GOOD.
Love it
This is my personal favorite Sabbath song. Everyone in the band is on fire in this killer track!
Ward is such a master
I have long said Sabbath is not Sabbath without Bill Ward. The jazz elements he brings has never been replicated within Sabbath or Ozzy's career. Ward brought the boogie and I love it.
I'm glad you're loving Black Sabbath, they're so much more than Iron Man! I hope one day you do Fairies Wear Boots, it's one of my fav Sabbath songs and definitely my favorite one to play on drums!
Black Sabbath was my first concert in ‘72… I always catch myself playing air drums to any and every BS song. Bill Ward is the man.
Black Sabbath with Wild Turkey was my first concert in the Park Center Charlotte NC 1972 . Cheers 😊
Happy Birthday Rooney! Love the channel
🙏
Always remember this children:
Black Sabbath Matters!!! BSM!
BSM. Nuff said.
Welcome aboard!
I put myself under a lot of pressure. It seems almost impossible I'll reach 100k by sep 7th...
But WTH. Might twerk anyway
@@AndrewRooneyDrums haha even if you don't reach 100k I'll stick around, your reviews are great
Never too late to hear great music.
My favorite album from the 70s (when I was a teen). Damn, I'm old. But this still rocks 50 years later.
Andrew, you're exactly right, words like swing and jazz have been associated with Bill for years!
Had to subscribe, been watching since the first Sabbath video, been a fan of Bill from the first listen and your enthusiasm and break down of his drumming is awesome. Thanks my friend
Welcome aboard!
Thank you Daniel
I'm jealous that you get to discover black sabbath, I discovered in late 70s and they remain my favorite band and no other band is even close
I can see/hear why Michael!
Reminds you of soundgarden? ? Do you mean the first listen to this song?
I love reaction channels where the musicianship is appreciated - and also educational !
THANK YOU!
I request that you review Black Sabbaths "Symptom of the Universe". Bill even rips it up during Tony's Guitar solo.
You can feel Black Sabbath in your soul ❤ Welcome to the family my brother
First heard this when the record came out and this song was the absolute highlight of the LP. I was about ten years old at the time and I still keep coming back to this in my early sixties...
I would have loved Bill to be a part of the band even in the later periods, the original sabbath.
I don't think there's any replacing Ward.
New drummers were probably excellent. But only one Bill Ward!
It is good listening to these reactions back to back without waiting
This is one of the greats. I love the cover Kyuss did of Into the Void, you should check it out, they pulled a "sabbath" twist in that middle bridge-like section. Amazing.
I watch quite a few reaction channels and I always love to see people reacting to my favourite bands. I love that you feel like this about Sabbath, they're my lifelong favourite band and I am still like a kid in a candy store listening to them.
I feel the same! What a treat listening to them Lloyd
One of your best videos to date, and I really like the focus on the notation.
Thanks Warren! 🙏
Here we go! Riff heaven
