@@symbiosisai Been a fan since early 80's and I have massive respect for Clive and asking that question to me as a huge fan of this band is kind of insulting. It's like asking if Adrian is better than Dave or vice versa etc. Can't do that. Both drummers are extremely different, both are incredibly talented. That being said, I love Nicko and what he's done w/ Maiden and he's such a good dude. Clive like Paul just couldn't kick their habits/addictions when Maiden needed them to. Sadly of course we lost Clive but Clive had massive respect for Nicko. And let's be real no one has a better. faster foot in the business. Nicko doesn't need two pedals. This tour they're on now the dude is in his 70's and still killing it

Huge Maiden fan here. Love to see you doing them. I’ve seen Maiden 11 times since my first in 1987. Always a great show. There are two sections of this song that directly quote the poem. The lines “ay after day, day after day, we stuck, no breath nor motion
As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean
Water, water everywhere and all the boards did shrink
Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink” and the “lull” section, “One after one by the star dogged moon
Too quick for groan or sigh
Each turned his face with a ghastly pang
And cursed me with his eye
    Four times 50 living men
(And I heard nor sigh nor groan)
With heavy thump, a lifeless lump
They dropped down, one by one.”

I mean, this is the band that nearly 40 years ago almost upstaged QUEEN! I always wonder what would have been if Maiden hadn’t pushed Queen to play even better at the start of 1985… would Queen have gone on to perform “the greatest 20 minutes in music history” at Live Aid?

The London gig was interesting - was a warm-up gig for the Brave New World tour back in 99-00 (can't quite remember?) at the Sheppards Bush Empire - which only holds a couple of thousand. No stage show, just a few lights, and a wall of Marshalls (think: Spinal Tap set to 12). Was like going to the pub to watch Iron Maiden. Fantastic night. The world is a better place with Maiden in it...

And Coleridge admitted to "being under the influence of cannabis" when he wrote it. Dude was ahead of his time! What kills me about this song is that Steve Harris said that, comparative to other things he has written, this didn't take all that long to write. Fantastic band and a great bunch of 'lads' that produce theatrical shows with brilliant songs and music. Went to the World Slavery tour when i was a lad... it was unexpected, and well mind blowing. it was truly a theatrical production, I also happen to be a fan of the original poet, the song contains a couple of stanza from the poem "water water everywhere and all the boards did shrink, water water everywhere not a drop to drink' and the spoken word during the 'lull'
basically the song is just a deferent telling of the story, like there versions of Murder in the Rue Morgue, Flight of Icarus, The Trooper, Phantom of the Opera , etc. The bassist - S. Harris - is extremely well versed in literature and history - Run to the Hills is one of the best songs about the horrors the US military laid on the first nation, Aces High - battle of Britton, again the Trooper , Ghegis Khan,
one of the best and most influential bands to come out of the 70s, I am glad that you are looking into them. they have a lot to offer,.
If you really want to get a feel for the band itself - Wasted Years (the actual video) as it has a ton of :me and the boys: footage - off stage , being english and you see how much of a family those guys are.

They ran straight at us & got in our faces, I was so pleased I knew the words 😆😆
I’ve never forgotten the experience, Steve was scary as fxxk, possibly the best gig I’ve ever witnessed.

The look on your face when you looked up and said, "This is AWESOME" just cracked me up. Because it reminded me of myself - I'm aging myself here - in 1982 listening to the copy of "The Number of the Beast" that I, ahem....."borrowed"..... from my older sister. She has since moved on to other, lighter music, but I never stopped with Iron Maiden and the like; I still love them 41 years later. Just got tickets last night to see them in '24, actually!
On a somewhat related note, if you ever get a chance to hear Bruce Dickinson tell the story about how him and a friend got stranded for 12 hours on a nearly deserted island - and called to ask Nicko to fly over and pick them up - it's well worth it. One of the funniest stories I have ever heard.

I saw and -most important- heard this song live at Valle Hovin in Oslo in 2008, this is the best thing i have experienced with my clothes on. What a show. Maiden has also teached and educated me more about historical events and battles more than any teacher can do. The "Empire of the clouds" about the accident with the R-101 airship, i would never know about this if it wasn't for Maiden. When I heard Bruce sing for the first time "She's the biggest vessel built by men, a giant of the skies, for all you unbeleivers, the Titanic fits inside" it just gave me freezing chills down my back.

I've seen Maiden several times, starting back in the early 80's. They ALWAYS put on a great show. What's more, they themselves are having fun on stage, you can see it in their eyes, and the way they interact with each other on stage. Watching them is like watching a bunch of kids who are best friends goofing around, but they happen to be excellent musicians.
Nicko is a beast on drums, he can do things with his right foot that other drummers would need a second pedal for.

This is so unbelievably good! In the late 90s my mother gifted me a cassette. It contained Powerslave copied to it from the LP. Unfortunately the last part of Rime didn't fit on it and I spent years trying to find a copy with the complete song. In 1998 they re-released their early albums on CD and I finally got to hear the final solo in its complete form. Iron Maiden is definitely the best band I've seen live ever.
Andrew, I would love it if you could take a look at the British band Wishbone Ash. They were pioneers in dual lead guitar playing and inspired many great bands, including Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Metallica, Dream Theater and many more. They have sort of a medieval or folky feel to their music, while being quite jazzy and hard rocking at the same time with solos from all the instruments etc.
