Plus visually, it adds to the whole coliseum rock show experience. Bare foot is a preference. When I was young I played barefooted but now I don’t. Nicko has a very fast bass drum foot and attributes it in part because he’s barefooted (12:30)
i mean playing bare foot makes sense, direct contact with the pedal means possibility of faster and more accurate drumming. Same reason a lot of hockey players wear their skates bare foot as to not lose any kinetic energy in the movement. Note: not a drummer
@@danieloconnor1005 I don't wear Converse but when I'm drumming I prefer to wear a pair of my Taekwondo training shoes. Very light and thin material and gives me good feeling on the pedal. Sometimes I'll just wear socks but if I'm playing something quite fast and aggressive I prefer the shoes as I only use a single pedal for the most part when I can get away with it.
@KoalityReactions it started when Nicko was playing for Pat Travers in the late 70's. Nicko said that Pat had him get this huge kit because it would look cool on stage - which it does. In highschool we read The Ryhme of the Ancient Mariner and my literature teacher played us the whole song in class ❤ we read along the lyrics and discussed how the parts were illustrated in music.
The algorithm brought me here so I'd like to help. Yes, it's a ridiculous drum kit by normal terms, but Nicko (drummer) genuinely composes his parts, and the magnitude of his kit allows him to fully express and compliment the exceptional size of this particular music. As for being barefoot, it's not entirely unique, but less common. He's rather famous for having a stupidly fast single bass drum foot, and it allows him to fully feel and control the pedal. He used to wear boxing shoes for a similar reason. If you mean the original Grinch cartoon, the narration was Boris Karloff, legendary actor. Yes, the creaking wood sounds, etc are a backing track from the studio version, as is the voice-over during the slow section. Yes, Nicko has an actual ship's bell. Yes, the middle section was meant to be very atmospheroc to allude to a ship sat dead in the ocean just after its whole crew dropped lifeless to the decks. The "water, water everywhere" verse and the voice-over verse are direct excerpts from the poem; everything else is Steve's (bass player) writing. Yes, it was unimaginable to witness in concert.
Enjoyed your reaction to the mighty Iron Maiden hen. Got to agree with what’s been said already. If you ever get the chance to see them live then you should as you would really enjoy it and appreciate their showmanship. Anyway I will certainly check out your other stuff and subscribe to your channel Loads of love from Scotland 🏴
24:22 Bruce Dickinson is the singer, as you already know; he was in the band from 1981 to 1993, and re-joined them in 1999. Steve Harris is the bass player, the main composer and lyricist, and also the founder of the band on Christmas' Day of 1975; his white Fender Precision Bass is customized with the logo of West Ham United, his favorite football club. Dave Murray is the veteran guitar player (since 1976) and the only band member to appear in alla of Iron Maiden records (other than Steve Harris). In this video, he's on the right spot of the stage and plays the second guitar solo (19:53 of your reaction). Adrian Smith joined the band in 1981 upon Dave's recommendation; they have been friends since schooldays and legend has it that Dave taught him to play guitar. Adrian played with Iron Maiden until 1989, then left to pursue a solo career; he reunited with Bruce Dickinson in the former's solo band, and then the two rejoined Iron Maiden in 1999. He usually is at the center of the stage; he plays the first guitar solo (in your reaction, from 19:29). Janick Gers is the third guitar player; he joined the band in 1989, taking Adrian Smith's place. When Adrian and Bruce reunited with Iron Maiden in 1999, the band decided not to part ways with him, and became a three-guitar group. As Rime was released in 1984, he doesn't play any solo in this song; anyways, he's the blonde and skinny guy on the left, all dressed in black, with the black guitar. Finally, Nicko McBrain is the drummer. He joined Iron Maiden in 1983 and he's also the oldest band member: he was born in 1952.
I went ahead and subscribed because I accidentally stumbled upon another beautiful woman reactionist. ❤ And now I can get notifications whenever another video is uploaded.
I had to study that poem in college. It's really good! Remember, the poets of these time were on opium, its where reality meets the mystical. So cool. ❤
Hi, I'm from Brasil, where there are many Maiden's fans; in fact, Maiden's got many fans in South America! I've been a huge fan for decades, and I got some interesting facts to tell you: Bruce Dickinson, one of the greatest vocalists ever in Rock History, is graduated... in History, PHD in Egyptology, and he is also the pilot of Maiden's airplane, called "Ed Force One"! If you really enjoyed Maiden's music and want to get to know more about it, I shall warn you: you have no idea how creative they can be, so you'd better be prepared to blow your mind even more! And, if you like epic, storytelling songs, I suggest to you: "Run to the hills"; "Flight of Icarus"; "Phantom of the opera"; "Aces High"; "Seventh son of the seventh son"; "Powerslave"; "The clansman"; "Alexander the great". Some other great Maiden's hits: "The number of the beast"; "Fear of the Dark". Currently, they're on tour, "The Future Past Tour" - coming to South America this year. As we, fans, use to say, "up the Irons"!
There are some lyrics which are direct quotes from the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the first bit starts with "Day After Day....! and finishes with "...nor any drop to drink"
Raye, Oscar winning tears performed at the Royal Albert Hall. This is a triumph of the soul. Her back story of how she was treated by the record label she signed with as a singer / songwriter is remarkable. This performance was the frosting on the cake of her hard work and proof her old record label should have let her have creative freedom. Their loss is our gain.❤
This is when they took the Entire Power Slave Tour from the mid 80s out a 2nd time! They said this is not a retread, they took their earlier tours on world wide tours because they younger fans had not been born yet and this gives them a chance to experience it Live for themselves! How cool is That!
I saw the Powerslave tour back in the 80's. Amazing. I was in high school. This show is basically a re-do of that tour. Many Maiden songs are inspired by history, poetry, films...etc. Most written by bassist Steve Harris.
Words and music by Steve Harris. I remember him talking about being in the Bahamas, recording the album at Compass Point Studios and really enjoying the weather and the partying. But, he knew he had to get that one last song in the album, and told everyone he was still working on it and it would be done soon. Suddenly he appears with the finished song and the others were like "WTF?!?!", since he never mentioned that it was a 13 minute long epic !!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Based on a poem b Samuel Taylor Coleridge and quite accurate and sure the drums of Nicko are huge as he's a master of them...and he plays in his local pub also just for kicks
To add some perspective...This is the last song on Maiden's 5th album, released in 1984. Written by bassist, band founder and primary songwriter, Steve Harris. The only song on the album written while the band was in studio recording it. This was preceded by critically acclaimed albums released in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983, all followed by extensive world touring. Non-stop production of high-quality music and concert performances in such a compressed timeframe. Unfathomable for any bands of today. And what you're seeing in this video is 24 years later.
You can never have too many drums! I drum barefoot as well. I can literally feel the pedals & can control them a lot better than if I’m wearing shoes. Every drummer is different though. To each his own.
We did this poem in year 9 English (so I was 15) and YES I subjected (gifted) my entire class to this song!! That was in 91. The storytelling of Maiden is Epic, there is no other word for it. Alexander the Great is probably one you should check out as well.
Cool to see young kids in the audience because I was their age when I seen them in Nashville and they did Rime of the ancient mariner around 40 years ago.
It's a McBrain and his legendary drumkit! God I loved it as a child. Still do. Maiden always take me to the trip to my childhood. Listened them from -89. Check Maiden England! -Moonchild -Infinite Dreams -Seventh Son.... Magical gig from a golden era!
Check out The Clansman from Rock in Rio. Another incredible example of how nobody tells a story like Iron Maiden do. U are right in saying that everything about the performance is a part of telling the story. That is a truly special talent.
in the 80s a lot of drummers had massive kits but never touched half of it, Nicko has that massive kit and honestly sometimes it sounds like he is playing more than are even present... his fills are AMAZING. I saw them first on World Slavery Tour, '84 and this song absolutely blew my ten year old mine. psst, IIRC the poem is some 700+ stanzas long... it is massive, but so so so good. ... some of the lyrics are direct pulls from the poem. - the lines "Day After Day Day After Day we stuck no breath nor motion as idle as a Painted Ship on the Painted Ocean and the following line "Water Water everywhere and all the boards did shrink, water water everywhere and nor a drop to drink" - they are stuck at sea, no wind to fill the sails and surrounded by saltwater... it is Death and Life in Death, and they basically gamble for the crew. LiD wins the mariner and curses him to tell his tale to teach the lesson Also by STC is the poem Kubla Khan (a lot shorter) that is so descriptive, the imagery is intense and will stay with you ... Boris Karloff did the voice over on the original Grinch from back in the day.
The moment where Bruce sing about death and she life in death, she life in death is considered like that phrase a fate worse than death hence he has the joy of watching his 200 man crew, his 200 friends drop dead before his eyes and it's not until he wishes he was dead and praises the other animals for their beauty that he is allowed to drink. I'm pretty sure in the poem there is a moment where he is so thirsty that he bites his arm hard enough to draw blood just to try and drink something. That's the sort of suffering he was subject to by not dying with his crew
I saw them in 85' on the 5th of July. Bruce between song said "Happy late 4th of July to you Southern California! Do you know we celebrate the 5th of July in England. It because we did have to deal with your asses anymore!!! The crowd just cheered and cracked up. Lol he has a great sense of humor
Steve Harris (bass) formed 1975 as a local pub band because he wanted Iron Maiden to play the original songs that he was writing at the time which prior bands found complicated to play... he had progressive influences as well as heavy rock, and he has remained Maiden's leader and chief songwriter... Over the years, the other members also contributed songs and music to Iron Maiden... Harris composed and wrote 'Rime of the Ancient mariner'... and he has written a lot of Maiden's epic songs like - 'Sign of the Cross' ... 'Alexander the great' ... 'For the greater good of God'... etc. Dave Murray (guitar) is the longest-serving member of Iron Maiden (guitarist on ur left)... Steve Harris saw him perform in another local band in 1976 and enlisted him in Maiden during their pub days; Murray joined permanently in 1977... Murray's friend Adrian Smith (guitar) finally agreed to join Maiden in late 1980 after his band went nowhere (he's the guitarist at the center)... Smith is a key composer in Maiden. Bruce Dickinson (vocals) saw Iron Maiden perform when he was singing for another band Samson (Paul Di'Anno was Maiden's vocalist then) and in late 1981, Dickinson was offered the job to sing for Iron Maiden when Di'Anno parted ways and recorded their 3rd album 'The number of the Beast' in 1982. Nicko McBrain (drums) had played in numerous bands since the 70's, and he replaced Maiden's drummer Clive Burr in 1983 and made his debut on their 4th album 'Piece of Mind' in '83. Janick Gers (guitar) was on ur right... He also spent the 80's in various bands and joined Iron Maiden in 1990 after guitarist Adrian Smith had left the band... Gers and Dave Murray became a solid guitar duo, and when Adrian Smith and vocalist Bruce Dickinson rejoined Iron Maiden in 1999, Janick Gers stayed and they became a 3 guitar heavy metal band.
Hi, came across this video today and really enjoyed it! If you love this song, the storytelling, etc., I'd really recommend you check out "Stargazer" by Rainbow. Another metal tune, although late 70s. Similar awesome storytelling, similar awesome musicianship!
The other band member you really HAVE TO know is Steve Harris, the bass player. The man is JUST AS MUCH of a legend as Bruce - he is THE founding member of the band, having been in it since its inception with the original lineup ALL THE WAY through to the present day, without a break, and he writes ALL THE SONGS too. He's also one of the best and most beloved bass players out there, rightly well known for his boundless stamina, epic enthusiasm and his INCREDIBLY distinctive playing style, famously known as "The Gallop".
No autotune, no editing, just raw talent.

Anyway I will certainly check out your other stuff and subscribe to your channel
Loads of love from Scotland 🏴
And now I can get notifications whenever another video is uploaded.
Holy moses your epic just like this masterpiece of music & songwriting/storytelling..
Bye bye gorgeous
I had to study that poem in college. It's really good! Remember, the poets of these time were on opium, its where reality meets the mystical. So cool. ❤
Up The Irons \m/
Loved the breakdown
Have fond memories of going to the library to read the poem after hearing the song when I was a teenager!
Hard work doesn’t guarantees shit mostly! Nothing is guaranteed often
Great reaction thanks greetings from Costa Rica 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Another one of their epic story song is Empire Of the Clouds you will like it.
Terrible song. Piano ffs
So glad you got into the lyrics. So many people gloss over them for some reason.
This song helped me pass one of my College English classes using it as cliffnotes 😆
Bruce singing, rest of the band from L-R on screen, Dave Murray - guitar, Adrian Smith - guitar, Steve Harris - bass, Janick Gers - guitar
Please Dance Of Death live by them next.
Another great theatrical presentation is the concert Dance of Death (Live At Estadio Nacional, Santiago) of Dance of Death Tour (2003--2005)
Best maiden reaction ❤😊
Dance of Death is an amazing performance aswell !
I remember studying this poem in school and thinking its interesting that Bruce Dickinson was able to make it into a metal ballad.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A Maiden concert is better than any theatre production. Love this band xx
The real, purest and most crystalline meaning of the word excellence in the format of a band.
Dance of Death live...and Where the wild wind blows live also.great stories as well
What's incredible is that Nico - the drummer - does "double kick" pattern with single foot.
Seen them live many many times...show is amazing when done indoors...
It’s just brilliant.
It's a McBrain and his legendary drumkit! God I loved it as a child. Still do.
Maiden always take me to the trip to my childhood.
Listened them from -89.
Check Maiden England!
-Moonchild
-Infinite Dreams
-Seventh Son....
Magical gig from a golden era!
i have been a fan since the mid 80s, by far my favorite band of all time.
U must experience an Iron Maiden concert Live! They are on Tour Right Now!
Loved your face though whole time 😂😂😳😳😳🔥🔥🔥
Check out The Clansman from Rock in Rio. Another incredible example of how nobody tells a story like Iron Maiden do. U are right in saying that everything about the performance is a part of telling the story. That is a truly special talent.
If it wasn't for iron maiden and school house rock I would have never passed high school English and history
Hahaha amazing.
in the 80s a lot of drummers had massive kits but never touched half of it, Nicko has that massive kit and honestly sometimes it sounds like he is playing more than are even present... his fills are AMAZING.
LiD wins the mariner and curses him to tell his tale to teach the lesson
Also by STC is the poem Kubla Khan (a lot shorter) that is so descriptive, the imagery is intense and will stay with you ...
I like how you understand what's going on.
Every so often a question on jeopardy involves this story -Rime of the Ancient Mariner, by Samuel Taylor Cooleridge.
Bruce lead vocal. Nicko Drums. Steve bass. Yannick guitar. Adrian Guitar, and Dave guitar
Amazing, thank you! Now I have to look at a picture to figure out each guitarist. 😂🤍
Bruce lead vocals and audience :)
Listen to seventh son of a seventh son
Steve doesn't write all the songs. He has written the majority, but not near all of them.
