@KoalityReactions it started when Nicko was playing for Pat Travers in the late 70's. Nicko said that Pat had him get this huge kit because it would look cool on stage - which it does. Nicko got used to playing on that set up and has kept it ever since. It's not just for show, though. Nicko actually does use everything on his kit.

Well, if we're being truthful, it's their best. Everyone has their favorite but this was their first of it's kind, and most unique and innovative. Everything that followed was an attempt to 'copy' this footprint, but I saw this Live in '84 and nothing has come close since. That's my story and I'm sticking to it 😉

Drummer Nicko McBrain is a premier rock drummer. He has a large kit but uses all of it. If you listen to Iron Maiden he uses many descending and ascending drum fills. Plus visually, it adds to the whole coliseum rock show experience. Bare foot is a preference. When I was young I played barefooted but now I don’t. Nicko has a very fast bass drum foot and attributes it in part because he’s barefooted (12:30)

i mean playing bare foot makes sense, direct contact with the pedal means possibility of faster and more accurate drumming. Same reason a lot of hockey players wear their skates bare foot as to not lose any kinetic energy in the movement. Note: not a drummer

I was 17 when I saw them in 1984 and the concert is still one of the best performances I have ever seen. The absolute showmanship was phenomenal. All of their songs tell a story but this one was epic. When we covered this poem in HS English the teacher actually played this song in class. I saw them 3 more times after that.

How cool is That!

This band and that song in particular introduced me to English literature, in some ways history, poetry, the artworks of both Gustave Doré (who illustrated the poem) and Derek Riggs (illustrator for Iron Maiden) and all this at the young age of 12-13 when I was entering high school! How many bands or singers have done the same for you with a single song? Thank you Iron Maiden, you made myself better :)

Raye, Oscar winning tears performed at the Royal Albert Hall. This is a triumph of the soul. Her back story of how she was treated by the record label she signed with as a singer / songwriter is remarkable. This performance was the frosting on the cake of her hard work and proof her old record label should have let her have creative freedom. Their loss is our gain.❤

The other band member you really HAVE TO know is Steve Harris, the bass player. The man is JUST AS MUCH of a legend as Bruce - he is THE founding member of the band, having been in it since its inception with the original lineup ALL THE WAY through to the present day, without a break, and he writes ALL THE SONGS too. He's also one of the best and most beloved bass players out there, rightly well known for his boundless stamina, epic enthusiasm and his INCREDIBLY distinctive playing style, famously known as "The Gallop".

Hi, I'm from Brasil, where there are many Maiden's fans; in fact, Maiden's got many fans in South America!
I've been a huge fan for decades, and I got some interesting facts to tell you: Bruce Dickinson, one of the greatest vocalists ever in Rock History, is graduated... in History, PHD in Egyptology, and he is also the pilot of Maiden's airplane, called "Ed Force One"!
If you really enjoyed Maiden's music and want to get to know more about it, I shall warn you: you have no idea how creative they can be, so you'd better be prepared to blow your mind even more!
And, if you like epic, storytelling songs, I suggest to you: "Run to the hills"; "Flight of Icarus"; "Phantom of the opera"; "Aces High"; "Seventh son of the seventh son"; "Powerslave"; "The clansman"; "Alexander the great".
Some other great Maiden's hits: "The number of the beast"; "Fear of the Dark".
Currently, they're on tour, "The Future Past Tour" - coming to South America this year.
As we, fans, use to say, "up the Irons"!

To add some perspective...This is the last song on Maiden's 5th album, released in 1984. Written by bassist, band founder and primary songwriter, Steve Harris. The only song on the album written while the band was in studio recording it. This was preceded by critically acclaimed albums released in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983, all followed by extensive world touring. Non-stop production of high-quality music and concert performances in such a compressed timeframe. Unfathomable for any bands of today. And what you're seeing in this video is 24 years later.

24:22 Bruce Dickinson is the singer, as you already know; he was in the band from 1981 to 1993, and re-joined them in 1999.
Steve Harris is the bass player, the main composer and lyricist, and also the founder of the band on Christmas' Day of 1975; his white Fender Precision Bass is customized with the logo of West Ham United, his favorite football club.
Dave Murray is the veteran guitar player (since 1976) and the only band member to appear in alla of Iron Maiden records (other than Steve Harris). In this video, he's on the right spot of the stage and plays the second guitar solo (19:53 of your reaction).
Adrian Smith joined the band in 1981 upon Dave's recommendation; they have been friends since schooldays and legend has it that Dave taught him to play guitar. Adrian played with Iron Maiden until 1989, then left to pursue a solo career; he reunited with Bruce Dickinson in the former's solo band, and then the two rejoined Iron Maiden in 1999. He usually is at the center of the stage; he plays the first guitar solo (in your reaction, from 19:29).
Janick Gers is the third guitar player; he joined the band in 1989, taking Adrian Smith's place. When Adrian and Bruce reunited with Iron Maiden in 1999, the band decided not to part ways with him, and became a three-guitar group. As Rime was released in 1984, he doesn't play any solo in this song; anyways, he's the blonde and skinny guy on the left, all dressed in black, with the black guitar.
Finally, Nicko McBrain is the drummer. He joined Iron Maiden in 1983 and he's also the oldest band member: he was born in 1952.

Hi, came across this video today and really enjoyed it! If you love this song, the storytelling, etc., I'd really recommend you check out "Stargazer" by Rainbow. Another metal tune, although late 70s. Similar awesome storytelling, similar awesome musicianship!

Steve Harris (bass) formed 1975 as a local pub band because he wanted Iron Maiden to play the original songs that he was writing at the time which prior bands found complicated to play... he had progressive influences as well as heavy rock, and he has remained Maiden's leader and chief songwriter... Over the years, the other members also contributed songs and music to Iron Maiden... Harris composed and wrote 'Rime of the Ancient mariner'... and he has written a lot of Maiden's epic songs like - 'Sign of the Cross' ... 'Alexander the great' ... 'For the greater good of God'... etc.
Dave Murray (guitar) is the longest-serving member of Iron Maiden (guitarist on ur left)... Steve Harris saw him perform in another local band in 1976 and enlisted him in Maiden during their pub days; Murray joined permanently in 1977... Murray's friend Adrian Smith (guitar) finally agreed to join Maiden in late 1980 after his band went nowhere (he's the guitarist at the center)... Smith is a key composer in Maiden.
Bruce Dickinson (vocals) saw Iron Maiden perform when he was singing for another band Samson (Paul Di'Anno was Maiden's vocalist then) and in late 1981, Dickinson was offered the job to sing for Iron Maiden when Di'Anno parted ways and recorded their 3rd album 'The number of the Beast' in 1982.
Nicko McBrain (drums) had played in numerous bands since the 70's, and he replaced Maiden's drummer Clive Burr in 1983 and made his debut on their 4th album 'Piece of Mind' in '83.
Janick Gers (guitar) was on ur right... He also spent the 80's in various bands and joined Iron Maiden in 1990 after guitarist Adrian Smith had left the band... Gers and Dave Murray became a solid guitar duo, and when Adrian Smith and vocalist Bruce Dickinson rejoined Iron Maiden in 1999, Janick Gers stayed and they became a 3 guitar heavy metal band.

    Hi Jenna, greetings from UK
I miss your Nightwish reactions 🥰
Are you going to do any more?
Perhaps "The Greatest Show On Earth" from either Tampere or Wembley?
You will need a video with lyrics 😊
It shows the history of the earth, the history of humans and the history of music

The moment where Bruce sing about death and she life in death, she life in death is considered like that phrase a fate worse than death hence he has the joy of watching his 200 man crew, his 200 friends drop dead before his eyes and it's not until he wishes he was dead and praises the other animals for their beauty that he is allowed to drink. I'm pretty sure in the poem there is a moment where he is so thirsty that he bites his arm hard enough to draw blood just to try and drink something. That's the sort of suffering he was subject to by not dying with his crew
