I met Nicko and saw him do a drum workshop at an Iron Maiden fan convention in Brighton (U.K.) many years ago. He is just incredible and he signed some sticks for me.
Nicko's drum sets always look so comfy, like you could just sit back and be surrounded by drums and cymbals but everything is ergonomically positioned and has purpose.
I have been an Iron Maiden fan since 1981 when I was 11. As a young kid and a teen, I always seemed to miss their shows in New York City. I thought after Bruce's cancer I may never get to see the band live. I finally got to see them on the Book of Souls tour and the last one in 2022. They are a-must see!
Please check out their song the prisoner from the 1982 Hammersmith concert. Clive Burr plays the drums on that one and it's some of the tightest drumming you'll ever hear
Nicko is one of the most musical drummers in the game. Players like him and Danny Carey take monster kits and use them wisely; their phrasing and most importantly their choices of what and what not to play, when and when not to chop are what make their lines so solid and so artful.
Ditto. I learned bass listening to the Piece of Mind album back in the mid-80’s and Revelations was the first song I tackled. Still a favourite after all these years
I learnt drum, in part at least, because of their song Where Eagles Dare, not only their finest drum song by a country mile but one of the greatest drum lines in the history of music.

I totally agree with you that every band must have a characteristic sound, that makes you recognize them in any song or any part of a song. I once had a so-called friend, he used to say that Iron Maiden were repetitive and they sounded the same on every song. Needless to say he's no longer with us, he moved to another country, but, I used to say to him, is not that they're repetitive, it's just that they have that signature sound that makes them recognizable and we all the fans love. I enjoy your commentary. I strongly suggest reacting to The Book of Souls from The Book of Souls Live Chapter… The sound engineer recorded the best live sound they’ve ever performed! As you listen to their live material you’ll hear the three lead, and rhythm guitarists ; Dave Murray: recorded on the left channel, Yanick Gers: recorded on the right channel, and Adrian Smith: recorded on both channels. You will now be able to distinguish their individual tone, as you listen to live Iron Maiden. Enjoy Sir!!
Hey Andrew, kiwi living in Oz here. I was at this show, life long dream to see them. Took the wife (not a fan of rock or metal) she was blown away and loved every second. Really enjoy the vids bro.
Seen Maiden live in London and twice in Christchurch... Can say that Sept 16th Auckland next year - Somewhere in Time set list - is going to be fantastic.
Yes they played four songs from Somewhere in Time. The only downer for me is that they played five songs off their new album. So they only played 6 other songs of the 40 I was hoping they would play. They don’t need new music. I’ve listened to the last couple albums. Once. That said I will still go see them every chance I get. Because no one and I mean NO ONE, has a better live show than Iron Maiden.!
I’m sure Nicko mentioned in drumming video on Maiden’s RUclips channel that he uses a click to start a song off, if its a drum/full band intro, then the rest of the song it’s just the band keeping time.
One of my favorites from Piece of Mind album Nicko kills it as usual Bruce Dickinson wrote this song. Killer vocalist and talented writer. Check out Powerslave
Andrew, you must watch the documentary Flight 666, you'll really get a unique insight to how Iron Maiden operate and how without any radio play they get the following they have. Great reaction as always. 🤘🏻👊🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
On the Live after death live album they played this song waaay fast live... Still fast here, but not as fast as the before mentioned version.. check it out. its crazy fast.
I love the analysis. What I don’t love in general is everyone saying in music you need a click or a metronome. To make it perfect!! Music I not meant to be played perfectly it should eb and flow. With in limits obviously. What makes a great band playing live is letting the music eb and flow.

Nicko is the master in how to use a massive drum set the right way , he does exactly enough for the song , a seriously underated drummer by some.
