I feel like you are missing something here. I definitely agree that the Chara who fell down and became friends with Asriel was not evil, but the Chara at the end of the Genocide run is the same Chara, just without a soul. This is why they ask you to give them your soul if you want to play the game again, and if you complete a second genocide run, Chara does say that they did not have a soul before your encounter. I think that Chara alone is not evil, but just like Asriel, when they lost their soul, they become emotionless.
Chara knows about the timelines and has been doing this over and over and over and erased the literally pointless world and grabbed an useless soul that doesent do shit and can recreate the world again over and over

I like the explanation that Chara is the narrator, whatever path you choose. If you choose to kill, they become violent. If you choose not to kill, they're much friendlier, although still snarky at times.

I've made a theory about Chara Dreemurr!! Well, I've reached an understanding on who she is as a character. Okay. . . a month ago, I thought that Chara was NOT the villian. I was sure Chara was a good person, and it was the players fault for teaching her to kill. . . However, I learned that there is much evidence of Chara being the bad guy through genocide, BUT there is also evidence of Chara being the good guy in pacifist. I realised that Chara is bad, but she is NOT bad either. . . . . . um. . let me try to explain. Here is my theory/understanding of the story: Chara was abused on the surface by humans. (I WOULD go into more detail about that, but let's just keep it simple.) Chara was abused and bullied on the surface by humans, that explains Chara 's hatred towards humanity. Because of her bad experiences, Chara became who we thought she was, a "mean, murderous child" , she decides to run away and climb up a mountain, called Mt. Ebbot. She falls(intentionally?) and nearly kills herself. If it weren't for Asriel, Chara would have been dead. Chara was raised by the dreemurrs. . . but Chara wasn't the greatest child. She bullied Asriel ("I always was a crybaby, wasn't I Chara?", "Hey, quit tricking me. . .heheh. . ." - Asriel) called him a crybaby multiple times. She was in a grumpy mood most of the time, depressed, hurt and alone. However, Chara grew attached to Asriel. Chara was a bad kid, because of her childhood. . . but she developed a weakness for the Dreemurr family, especially Asriel. They were. . . different. . . from her human family on the surface. Later, Chara realised buttercups were deadly, laughed off Asgore's pain, but meanwhile developed a plan. As Toriel mentioned in the True Pacifist ending, there IS a peaceful way to break the barrier. You would have to take ONE soul from a human, cross the barrier, and take 6 more souls from humans at the surface that had ALREADY DIED(human souls persist after death). Then, come back and free everyone peacefully. Chara thought about that plan first, BEFORE Toriel. She, knowing she was a human, killed herself by poisoning herself with buttercups. Asriel took Chara's soul, crossed the barrier, and carried out the plan. Asriel would look for humans that already died and use their soul to break the barrier. Chara didn't care about the other monsters in the underground. She didn't care about the lives of humans or monsters. . as long as she could SAVE Asriel, she was happy. You know how the story goes, Asriel dies. . . Toriel buries Chara's body in the RUINS and the buttercup seeds in her body grow into a garden where Frisk falls. That's Chara's backstory. As I said. . . Chara WAS a bad kid. . . but, she developed a soft spot for Asriel. Chara DID want to kill everyone, Chara's determination was that of hurt and pain. She thought that the only way to live life was to hurt others. . . Even Asriel admits this. Frisk's DETERMINATION awakes Chara. Chara follows Frisk throughout the game, in order to keep herself alive through Frisk/the player's determination. THIS IS WHY Flowey mistook Frisk for Chara. Frisk had DETERMINATION. Chara ALSO had determination. Frisk's determination reminded Flowey of Chara. Anyways, in the pacifist run , Chara helps keep you determined by transfering her memories of her family's words on her death bed to you , "You are the future of humans and monsters! Chara! Stay determined!" -Asgore. because she knows, if Frisk dies, she will die too. Because Chara lives off of Frisk's determination. All Chara thinks about is "Kill or be killed", but in the pacifist run, the PLAYER teaches Chara MERCY. Chara learns to FORGIVE, to love, to SAVE, because of Frisk's kindness. In the end of the run, it was CHARA who SAVED Asriel. Frisk saves their friends by reminding them of the happy moments they had together. . . But to save Asriel? All Asriel ever did to Frisk was kill them, hurt them, threaten them and murder their friends. Frisk could NOT save Asriel. Frisk was UNCAPABLE of saving Asriel. Suddenly, Chara comes in, and reminds Asriel of the day he saved her life. Chara was the one who saved Asriel. You taught Chara kindness. You taught her how to SAVE others. In genocide, when you kill everyone, Chara agrees with your actions. Together, you eradicate the enemy. In the end, Chara says "Since when were you the one in control??" But. . . when Flowey came in, Flowey BEGS Chara to spare their life. Chara is in control now. But. . . you realise Chara is hesitating. Like I said, Chara had a weak spot for Asriel, in the pacifist run. . . she wanted to SAVE Asriel. When Asriel the flower begs for his life and reminds Chara of the good times they had together, Chara hesitates. . . and YOU, THE PLAYER have to press the button. That second where Chara hesitated to kill her best friend, it was your last chance to quit the game and reset. There would be no consequences. The PLAYER hits the button to kill Asriel. If you do a pacifist run after killing Asriel, Chara has your soul. You save your friends and go to the surface. But. . . the surface is the only place that the PLAYER has NO CONTROL over. Once the game ends, you see Chara's face appear on Frisk. Chara is in control of Frisk now. She has the power to destroy humanity, because you have already broken the barrier and given her your soul. You just HAD to do genocide, didn't you? So, in summary. . . Chara was evil. Chara hated humanity. She hated monsters. But, she began to love the Dreemurr family, especially Asriel. If you do pacifist, you teach the mean, murderous Chara how to love others, to forgive and forget. You taught her how to show mercy and kindness. Chara SAVES her best friend in the end, and you reunite the long lost siblings. If you do genocide, Chara agrees with your actions. She follows along with you until the end. She takes your soul. Let's you do true pacifist again, waits till you reach the surface before she takes control of Frisk and the game ends, never being the same again. So. . . PACIFIST IS WAAAAAAY better than genocide. In Genocide, "*It's me, Chara" appears in the same font, color AND sound as the narration for everything else in the game, like *It's a watersausage! *It's Just a regular wall *Keep attacking, he can't dodge forever, ect. Therefore, we can say that Chara is the narrator of the Story. Since Chara follows Frisk throughout the game, they translate Froggit language, gives us tips on how to fight monsters, ect. Knowing this. . . lets get to the point. In the RUINS, you can find a faded ribbon with the narration saying * *If you're cuter, monsters may not hit you as hard.* That. . . is a pretty suspicious statement from Chara. Monsters may not hit you as hard. Have humans hit her harder than monsters have? Would humans on the surface hit Chara often? That's why Chara wears make up, in order to look cuter. . . so people might not hit them as hard? At the end of true pacifist, Asriel states, "Chara climbed the mountain for an unhappy reason." "Chara said they hated humanity, though they refused to tell me why." Putting all these pieces together, -Chara hints that humans may have hit her often on the surface -Chara climbed the mountain for an unhappy reason(possibly to commit suicide from the abuse) -Chara hated humanity because of this. Learning what they did to the monsters they loved made Chara hate humans even more. Don't just blindly assume they have mental issues. Use canon evidence from the game to support your statement. It's Toby Fox man. His Characters are way more complex than just "She has mental issues. . that's it"

Flowey, Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne and Mettaton all did get out of their way to try to murder Frisk. And just because they were villains it doesn't mean that they're "evil" or can't be redeemed, that's the whole message of UNDERTALE, mercy and forgiveness. Chara, however, can still be considered a villain, or at least an unintentional villain, depending on your run and how you see things, if it wasn't for Chara, Asgore wouldn't even have tried to get the human souls, Chara was the spark that lit up the battle of humans and monsters. And, if you're in a genocide run, Chara is definetly a villain, you were counting on them to be there by your side and be your partner, and in the end they betray you and murder you.(and don't come up with all that bullshit that Chara was doing justice or anything because there's a bunch of stuff proving otherwise)
heres a theory: Chara's intentions always match that of the player. In the pacifist route Chara helps you SAVE asriel by helping him remember their friendship. If you do genocide then she also has the intention f killing. When she says, our plan had failed, shes talking about the pacifist route you reset so the plan to free monsters failed. If you choose to not erase the world Chara is confused as to why you showed her that killing is right and why you forced her to help you as when you begin the game, you awaken her by naming the starting character. If you do a second genocide route, then she discourages you from doing another genocide route and she calls herself the deamon that comes when people call its name. By killing everyone you are calling Charas evil side to you. You put that energy into chara depending on which route you do. but idk, stuff...

When you gain LV or LOVE, It’s not given to you. It’s given to chara. Notice how it next to her name and not yours. Maybe that is why they erase the world on the genocide path. They have a level of violence of 20, they can kill the king of monsters with ease. Even if he potentially absorbed the 6 human souls. They become a god of absolute destruction or as they call it, “the demon that comes when you call it’s name”

I mean at the end since Frisk/the player is the one that makes all choices, Chara is not their friends by that logic because they never get to interact properly nor have a free will on deciding who are their friends, they are Frisk's friends. And that Toby's statement would be good if it wasn't for the fact that at the end Toby said "No characters are bad nor good, except for Jerry" which is most likely to be a joke.

She even says herself, "Greetings, I am Chara" You notice... that's the same thing Toriel says when she meets Frisk, "Greetings, I am Toriel" Flowey and Asgore also say "Howdy" Chara's got a green and yellow striped shirt. Asriel also has a green and yellow striped shirt. I don't really understand why you think the character at the end of genocide is NOT Chara...

Because Asriel realizes that you aren't Chara, you are Frisk. So if you make the name huuuman, Chara is now huuuman. Also when you name the fallen human Chara it says "the true name". (Sorry for giving you an essay, but I felt the need to explain).

One thing I find interesting is that in the Genocide route Chara basically says that when they came back from the dead, at first they we're so confused because their plan with Asriel failed and they both died, but "with your guidance" the player made them realize the purpose of their reincarnation which was "power" as Chara put it. This makes me think that you ARE talking to the real Chara at the end of genocide but corrupted by you.

Chara is just a victim to human abuse. "She" was powerless and potentially tried to commit cuiside. But ended up in the monster world. There "she" found peace and love. But eventually the humans come back into the story. That flipped Chara's personality to become more defending. Causing "her" to do anything to destroy the humans.

Actually she says that he could have taken six souls from people THAT ARE ALREADY DEAD. Remember, human souls have the power to keep existing after death. She did not want him to go and actively kill humans.
I've thought Chara had mental/emotional problems that made them have difficulty communicating with other humans, or emphatize with them. People tend to push individuals who are different than them away or try to fit them in stern unbreakable norms or ideas. Their life must've been hard before they fell, and I can't blame them. They'd probably seen the bad side of humanity more than the good side.

@trilokesh .k Chara has a reason for hating humanity. Humans have bullied and abused them which is why Chara fell down in the first place. You have to remember that Undertale is a game where everyone has a reason for doing things, and that they should receive mercy even if they did something horribly wrong. For example, Undyne tried to kill you because she’s loyal to her kind and she wants to free them. But in the pacifist route, you spare her anyways and become friends with her. Papyrus tried to capture you when you had one HP left, but like I said, in the pacifist route, you spare him and become friends with him. Chara is just a human. They have their own feelings and just like everyone else, they have their reason for doing things. I’m pretty sure if every human you ever met in your life has tormented and bullied you, you would probably also hate humanity. Cause I sure do.

Now let's get to what's happening in the game: -they possessed Frisk -you are supposed to be Chara, a lonely soul exploring a strange world -the reason get to name Chara is to get your lazy ass in their shoes -the 'narrator' is you/Chara, you are supposed to guide Frisk through the Underground -the path you chose will determine who Chara is in the game, the pacifist path wil make Chara a positive, optimistic soul, the neutral path a normal soul, nothing special. The genocide path will separate you from Chara, reviving them, making them a sadistic and genocidial, as you can see in the final moment in the genocide path
Where is it implied that Chara "possesses" Frisk? Seems like Chara got stuck to follow Frisk around, and we the players proceed to show them the "right" path. She flat out states that Frisk falling down awakened her, and the genocide route "showed" her the "true purpose", that she was "confused" when she first woke up with Frisk. She also discourages you from doing are more genocide runs, implying that she does not actively seek out destruction of the world.

Because the writings in waterfall suggest that no Human had ever fallen into the Underground it means Chara was alive after the theory of a human absorbing a boss monster soul became a thing and this bit of information never matters throughout the entire game since frisk never absorbs any souls which means that this piece of information has another reason for existing which is to show that Chara didn't have to end themselves and if they truly didn't care about Monsters they could have just killed one of the Dreemurr family and tried to take their soul.
I think Chara, having a similar soul to Frisk, must've bonded with Frisk and was molded into what Frisk had become in the Genocide route: a heartless murderer. When Chara takes Frisk's soul, she essentially becomes Genocide Frisk, a murderer that wants to destroy everything. Something that no subsequent Pacifist run can remedy because Chara and Frisk both share the same soul now.
I'm not sure why i thought Chara was the villain in the first place. Probably because everyone else said that they were. Something else i want to bring up is when Chara laughs when Asgore is poisoned. In Undertale, smiling and laughing is used to cope with pain. Which might also explain why Chara was smiling when confronted by Flowey in the no mercy run.
I have a theory about chara When you choose your name at the beginning the name is given to CHARA , in my theory you are chara , chara is player. Player is the one who controls frisk and makes them make their decisions. chara is good and bad
The first human is an interesting character because we get two really different explanations about them. On the one hand the story (or Undertale he he) told by the monsters in new home suggest that her/him and Asriel are perfectly happy best friends. But based on the information in the video tapes and by Asriel at the end of the game we get a different story. I like the idea that the version we hear about in New Home is Asgore's version which is uninformed (remember Asgore never listened to the tapes from the true lab) and the real story is very different than the ones the monsters live their lives by. Honestly both theories (the first human being good/bad) are equally plausible and I think most people just lean towards the one they find more appealing in a story sense.
Dr. Madd My personal opinion is that Chara is a very adaptive person; the way she's treated (yes I see Chara as a girl, okay?) reflects on her personality. She was most likely abused and/or mistreated in the surface, leading to her hating humanity and becoming somewhat mean. However, when she's adopted by Dreemurrs who treat her nicely, she becomes nicer as well. This is seen during the game too: Being a pacifist makes her friendly, while killing everyone turns her evil.

I think Chara is a kind-hearted and innocent child. Perhaps a bit troubled, yes, but innocent and sweet nonetheless. :) Plus, she's only a human, and humans aren't perfect; we all have flaws.

(pun intended) I mean, toriel basically kidnaps children and leaves a suicidal man to run an entire hopeless kingdom, sans threatens innocent children with death threats when they've done nothing wrong. papyrus, well, ok, papyrus is free of sin. but undyne, she chases you through the entirety of waterfall, spears waving, as she screams at the top of her lungs: THE WORLD WOULD BE BETTER IF YOU HUMANS WERE JUST DEAD!!! alphys manipulates situations to make herself look better. plus she created the amalgamates. mtt literally says he planned on killing you himself just so that he could be popular on the surface! asgore, oh asgore. he KILLED 7 human children and planned on killing frisk too! flowey, I don't think I need to go into too much detail on why he's evil, but if you need a little bit more of a nudge, he literally killed everyone, in every timeline, in every possible way. FOR FUN. and chara, they only killed one person. themselves. to free everyone from the underground and spare their family from having to be the sacrifice. Sure, Chara may be morally... ...Challenged... But, that doesn't mean she's necessarily BAD. She was probably abused and mistreated by her peers, or even PARENTS! Or Chara could have suffered some sort of severe mental illness or PTSD. I'm sure with enough talking and comforting, you could convince Chara to lay down her weapon. I'm sure deep down, Chara has the potential to be a good, likeable person. The Dreemurr family loved Chara very deeply, and were DEVASTATED when she died. Bringing this up, showing her the locket, and showing mercy might just get her to reconsider. Because she knows, deep down... ...She loves them too.
interesting video...however there is a lot more about chara in game... all you have to do is look at all the narrators quotes...don't think Charas the narrator? Well why does it say "Its You!" if Frisk is narrating? or it can say "Its me, Chara" as well...100% confirmed :P
I think it happens because: When you are at the house, Chara is focusing on their own memories, speaking as if they're just with Toriel, Asgore and Asriel, then it would not make sense if in the mirror narration said: "It's you" or something like that, because its Chara's memorys (Sorry for my bad english, this is not my language)
It could be two different people narrating. A 3rd person narrator for Frisk and Chara starting to take over, even the narrating, in the genocide route.
My opinion of Chara: Humanity sucks. Chara hated humanity, so Chara climbed Mt. Ebbot to get away from all of humanity. However, they accidentally fell into the Underground. When they started meeting all the monsters, they realized how nice and kind monsters were compared to humans. Chara became an honorary monster, pretty much- they hated humans and wanted then to die, but loved their fellow monsters. However, they were still a little rough around the edges after getting tossed around by humanity, but inside, they really and truly loved the ones they cared about. They loved them so much that they were willing to commit suicide in order to free the monsters. Unfortunately, Asriel's gentle nature caused the plan to fail, and both of them died. Skip forward some years. Frisk falls into the Underground. It's unknown why, but once they do, their immense distrust and/or hatred of monsters causes them to start killing every monster in sight. Their souls gets more and more powerful along the way, gaining more and more determination as time goes on. And with their final kill (Flowey), their soul is so strong that some of the determination splits off and goes into Chara, bringing them back to life. Chara recognizes the fact that everyone they loved, Toriel, Asgore, even Asriel... is dead. Because of this, they consider the world to be pointless, and force you to destroy it. After some time of you both reconsidering, Chara decides to bring the world back, but more importantly, bring the monsters back. To prevent you from forgetting about your deal, and to be able to go on an adventure of their own once more, Chara takes your soul as their own, then does the equivalent of a true reset. They then go on whatever pathway you go on after that. My point I'm trying to make is that Chara was just another person who was sick and tired of humanity, not some kind of serial murderer.

This was really nice to watch :) something I think that would have been really nice for you to include is the theory that Chara climbed Mt. Ebott to commit suicide. It's a really good angle to look at Chara's character from, especially when it's heavily implied that both Chara and Frisk climbed for just that reason, mainly implied by Asriel's dialogue at the end of a pacifist route. Something I really would have liked to see you address more Is Chara and Frisk's gender and why you think they're female (besides the cheeks). That may not have too much to do with this topic, although I think that may have been worth a mention.
Yep, I looked back on the video and realised I could have and probably should have talked about those things! I'll try and explain myself in a comment. I definitely think Chara at the very least climbed the mountain to potentially commit suicide. She seems to be a very tragic character who likely never had any friends until she met Asriel. As for Frisk, I believe the player is supposed to decide his motives for climbing Mt. Ebott (naturally, I think he was going for the world record for climbing Mt. Ebott the fastest, being a professional mountain climber and all). As for why I called Chara a girl, I admit it's little more than my head canon. The cheeks suggest they're feminine and the name just strikes me as belonging to a girl, even though it's completely made up! I honestly thought it would be tedious if I kept calling them "it" and "them" as well lol, so I thought I may as well stick with calling her a girl. Oh, and for Frisk, I believe he/she is whatever gender the player believes they are, most likely the same as the person playing (I think of Frisk as a he)! Hope I cleared that up!

Also, I don't know if this is too tragic to bring up, but I thought about it after I posted that comment. I saw a theory once somewhere that Chara was being abused by their human family, hinted at by their hatred for humans, their desires to kill themselves on Mt. Ebott, their joy of finally finding a real family in the Dreemurs, and my favorite piece of evidence for this of is the flavor text on the faded ribbon that says "If you're cuter, monsters won't hit you as hard", suggesting that Chara, if you use the Chara as narrator theory, knows this from experience. Thoughts?

I admit I've had an aversion to that ever since Dark Souls packed the entirety of its story within its items! That's very interesting though, and is certainly a possibility. In-game, LOVE is described as a corrupting force that makes you insensitive to killing. Remind me, whose name is next to the stat bar? It’s entirely possible that the “Chara” we meet on the Genocide path is just filled with LOVE, and is no more reminiscent of the first child’s true nature than, say, Flowey is of Asriel. After all, the game drops quite a few hints that Chara is the narrator, and their mannerisms and speech patterns are _entirely different_ than “the Fallen Child.”

It's kind of frustrating seeing Chara painted as the victim or as a morally good character. It was one theory that picked up steam. I'll gladly stick to the old theory of a child who hates their own race for some unexplained reason that's open to interpretation. Everything in the game about Chara points to them not liking humans, and indeed, based on how Asriel talks about it, it's more likely that Chara wanted to completely genocide the town asriel went to than simple self defense. A mixture of self-preservation, hate, anger, and a desire to see the monsters rule the earth. Depending on your side of the barrier, Chara is either an angel of justice, or a vile demon.
chaincat33 Chara is human, they don't have to be an angel or a demon. Humans make mistakes and sins just like me and you, but humans are quite the jerks in Undertale anyway. So I'm not surprised that Chara hated humanity, but loves monsterkind, because they gave her a home and kindness.

Chara isn't evil, but they're not necessarily good either, they're not a good person as stated by Asriel, but I wouldn't say that they're evil 'cause being pure evil in undertale is just bullshit. I also believe the whole "Chara climbed mount Ebott to kill themself" is bullshit too because if you go on the undertale kickstarter page it says that the human climbed mount Ebott because of a storm, but they got curious because of the massive hole in the middle of the cave and went to check it out but they tripped and fell
Davi Aiex Heleno Hmm... that is very interesting, somehow I've never seen that before. However, although it may be true that Chara went into the cave to seek shelter from the storm, it still doesn't give a reason as to why they climbed the mountain in the first place (and on a stormy day, no less. Not exactly an ideal day for mountain climbing, is it?). I still think that there is definitely a possibility that Chara climbed the mountain to run away from a bad situation/ possibly with suicide in mind. Then it started to rain so they went into the cave and either A. walked over to the hole because they were truly curious, or B. walked over to the hole because it looked like a possible option for suicide. I'm leaning more toward the first option here though. My opinion is that Chara climbed the mountain to run away, kind of wanting to die but also kind of scared. It started to rain, they went into the cave for shelter, they discovered the hole because they were curious, and then tripped and fell in, which ironically nearly fulfilled their suicide wish. Maybe Chara lived close to the mountain, or they were playing hide and seek with another kid, or maybe Chara was being chased because they made something bad or because a bad person was chasing them, tho your idea is cool too. And you're welcome! :D
After Asriel breaks the barrier, you can go all the way back to where you fell and chat with him. He says, "I know why Chara climbed the mountain. It wasn't for a very happy reason." That sounds like suicide to me.

I've a theory, when asriel died on the flower bed, his and charas soul was still fused, and when brought back as flowey, charas essence still existed inside flowey, which caused him, now without a soul, to be susceptible to charas evil influence still within him. This is why when he takes all souls in the underground and becomes asriel again, the emotion and feeling of everyone filled asriel with emotion again, something chara didn't have. Chara is pure malice, explaining why flowey is this way, asriels memories, charas twisted determination

Dreemur family loved Chara,who was a kind and fair child (colors on their t-shirt !). They must have tried to hurt themselves with fire tools (i am french and i’m not very good in english),causing Toriel to make it heavier to « make them safer ». They liked drawing,knitting,and one day,them and Asriel made a pie for Asgore. Sadly,they put buttercups because they misunderstood recipe. Asgore became sick,and Asriel was sad and surely cry,but Chara laughed. Not because they’re evil. But because they hid their pain. Then,they ate golden flowers,for dying,then cross the barrier,have the souls,then free monsters. Chara remembers that. They will forever. - Then,Frisk fell. I think Chara is short for character because we pick the name. I think Chara is supposed to be us. When they debate Chara's morality it is like people debating if they themselves are good or evil based on actions in a game. Remember what Flowey said. We just play this game. So, are you good or evil for you actions?

If I were to become a ghost and be stuck within the body of a serial killer murdering everyone I've ever knew and loved, I wouldn't hesitate to kill them off when I get the chance.
I love how the whole message of the genocide run is "YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS!" And people still blame Chara for killing everyone, because they don't want to be held accountable for their murders.
Actually, chara is the one to blame. At least in the genocide path, chara is the narrator. At the end of the genocide, they say: "Since when were YOU the one in control?" That line could be interpreted to be directed at either us or frisk. But that's not all. Flowey outright tells us that we arent actually influencing the game in any way. We are watching it, according to him. Strange that nobody ever presents on of the bloodiest murders of the fourth wall in a game that breaks it so often it might as well not be there as evidence in this. So, this is how the genocide route works, or at least my theory as to how it works: Frisk falls into the underground. They kill monsters in self defense. Frisk decides to seek out and kill the obviously weaker monsters to eliminate a threat to their safety. They realize what they have done as they reach toriel's house. As they sleep in the room that once belonged(as far as we know from what lore their is) to Chara and Asriel, chara themself begins to reawaken. Their soul, which had laid dormant in the flower bed where frisk had fallen, and where asriel had died, had latched onto frisk's soul, having been attached by Frisk's sheer determination. Like a parasite, chara began feeding on Frisk's determination. And that night, chara awoke enough to influence Frisk. Even as Frisk decided they would never kill if they could avoid it, Chara took partial control of them, driving them to swing their weapon instead of sparing toriel. With every increase in the Frisk's LOVE, chara gained more control over them. Until they killed Sans, after which Chara gained complete control over Frisk. They used that control to kill the ones they had once known as their adoptive father and sibling, and that gave them enough power to manifest themselves in a material body, having drained both Frisk's determination and EXP to have sufficient power to destroy the entire world. The player watches all this, before using what little influence they genuinely have to force frisk and chara into the soul selling deal, initiating the process all over again, or causing the soulless pasifist or even just a neutral run.
But Flowey broke his "kill or be killed" rule, because he doesn't want to die, he says:"creatures like us won't hesitate to kill each other, if we got in each other's way", in the genocide route everyone dies, humans and monsters, remember what Asriel said in the true pacifist route Chara hated humanity.

I believe Chara isn't evil or good. I believe Chara is just the embodiment of a gamer perfectionist. One who will go any lengths to be all powerful, regardless of consequences. They don't care about how they get their power. They're efficient. Chara kills others because he/she needs the EXP. That's why he/she grinds. Chara has no morals, and will use everyone as a stepping stone to achieve his/her goals. Once they clear out one world and get to the epitome of power that they want, they'll leave to do the same in another. If you could get exp by being nice and kind, I believe Chara would grind in that sense. Chara and Flowey are 2 characters that symbolize your typical RPG player.
I have a theory, I’ve heard that it’s was Frisk decision to kill as they were curious and I know she isn’t evil altogether as she reads signs for you and narrates the pacifist run. Only maybe when Toriel was killed her mind was broken and realised there was no going back. So I know a Frisk chickened out when they got to Sans maybe Chara was angry as they didn’t spare their Mother and forced them to keep going which is why she kills you if do not erase the world as they let you kill everyone and they killed their best friend for this so there mad and make you erase by continuing to kill you until you accept to erase the world.

I feel like you are missing something here. I definitely agree that the Chara who fell down and became friends with Asriel was not evil, but the Chara at the end of the Genocide run is the same Chara, just without a soul. This is why they ask you to give them your soul if you want to play the game again, and if you complete a second genocide run, Chara does say that they did not have a soul before your encounter. I think that Chara alone is not evil, but just like Asriel, when they lost their soul, they become emotionless.

Well, I've reached an understanding on who she is as a character.
Okay. . . a month ago,
I thought that Chara was NOT the villian.
I was sure Chara was a good person, and it was the players fault for teaching her to kill. . .
However, I learned that there is much evidence of Chara being the bad guy through genocide, BUT there is also evidence of Chara being the good guy in pacifist.
I realised that Chara is bad, but she is NOT bad either. . . . . . um. . let me try to explain.
Here is my theory/understanding of the story:
Chara was abused on the surface by humans.
(I WOULD go into more detail about that, but let's just keep it simple.)
Chara was abused and bullied on the surface by humans, that explains Chara 's hatred towards humanity. Because of her bad experiences, Chara became who we thought she was, a "mean, murderous child" , she decides to run away and climb up a mountain, called Mt. Ebbot. She falls(intentionally?) and nearly kills herself. If it weren't for Asriel, Chara would have been dead. Chara was raised by the dreemurrs. . . but Chara wasn't the greatest child. She bullied Asriel ("I always was a crybaby, wasn't I Chara?", "Hey, quit tricking me. . .heheh. . ." - Asriel) called him a crybaby multiple times. She was in a grumpy mood most of the time, depressed, hurt and alone. However, Chara grew attached to Asriel. Chara was a bad kid, because of her childhood. . . but she developed a weakness for the Dreemurr family, especially Asriel. They were. . . different. . . from her human family on the surface. Later, Chara realised buttercups were deadly, laughed off Asgore's pain, but meanwhile developed a plan. As Toriel mentioned in the True Pacifist ending, there IS a peaceful way to break the barrier. You would have to take ONE soul from a human, cross the barrier, and take 6 more souls from humans at the surface that had ALREADY DIED(human souls persist after death). Then, come back and free everyone peacefully. Chara thought about that plan first, BEFORE Toriel. She, knowing she was a human, killed herself by poisoning herself with buttercups. Asriel took Chara's soul, crossed the barrier, and carried out the plan. Asriel would look for humans that already died and use their soul to break the barrier. Chara didn't care about the other monsters in the underground. She didn't care about the lives of humans or monsters. . as long as she could SAVE Asriel, she was happy. You know how the story goes, Asriel dies. . . Toriel buries Chara's body in the RUINS and the buttercup seeds in her body grow into a garden where Frisk falls.
That's Chara's backstory. As I said. . . Chara WAS a bad kid. . . but, she developed a soft spot for Asriel.
Chara DID want to kill everyone, Chara's determination was that of hurt and pain. She thought that the only way to live life was to hurt others. . . Even Asriel admits this.
Frisk's DETERMINATION awakes Chara. Chara follows Frisk throughout the game, in order to keep herself alive through Frisk/the player's determination.
THIS IS WHY Flowey mistook Frisk for Chara. Frisk had DETERMINATION. Chara ALSO had determination. Frisk's determination reminded Flowey of Chara.
Anyways, in the pacifist run , Chara helps keep you determined by transfering her memories of her family's words on her death bed to you , "You are the future of humans and monsters! Chara! Stay determined!" -Asgore. because she knows, if Frisk dies, she will die too. Because Chara lives off of Frisk's determination.
All Chara thinks about is "Kill or be killed",
but in the pacifist run, the PLAYER teaches Chara MERCY. Chara learns to FORGIVE, to love, to SAVE, because of Frisk's kindness.
In the end of the run, it was CHARA who SAVED Asriel. Frisk saves their friends by reminding them of the happy moments they had together. . . But to save Asriel? All Asriel ever did to Frisk was kill them, hurt them, threaten them and murder their friends. Frisk could NOT save Asriel. Frisk was UNCAPABLE of saving Asriel.
Suddenly, Chara comes in, and reminds Asriel of the day he saved her life. Chara was the one who saved Asriel. You taught Chara kindness. You taught her how to SAVE others.
In genocide, when you kill everyone, Chara agrees with your actions. Together, you eradicate the enemy. In the end, Chara says "Since when were you the one in control??"
But. . . when Flowey came in, Flowey BEGS Chara to spare their life. Chara is in control now. But. . . you realise Chara is hesitating. Like I said, Chara had a weak spot for Asriel, in the pacifist run. . . she wanted to SAVE Asriel. When Asriel the flower begs for his life and reminds Chara of the good times they had together, Chara hesitates. . . and YOU, THE PLAYER have to press the button. That second where Chara hesitated to kill her best friend, it was your last chance to quit the game and reset. There would be no consequences.
The PLAYER hits the button to kill Asriel.
If you do a pacifist run after killing Asriel, Chara has your soul. You save your friends and go to the surface. But. . . the surface is the only place that the PLAYER has NO CONTROL over. Once the game ends, you see Chara's face appear on Frisk.
Chara is in control of Frisk now. She has the power to destroy humanity, because you have already broken the barrier and given her your soul. You just HAD to do genocide, didn't you?
So, in summary. . .
Chara was evil. Chara hated humanity. She hated monsters. But, she began to love the Dreemurr family, especially Asriel.
If you do pacifist, you teach the mean, murderous Chara how to love others, to forgive and forget. You taught her how to show mercy and kindness.
Chara SAVES her best friend in the end, and you reunite the long lost siblings.
If you do genocide, Chara agrees with your actions. She follows along with you until the end. She takes your soul. Let's you do true pacifist again, waits till you reach the surface before she takes control of Frisk and the game ends, never being the same again.
So. . . PACIFIST IS WAAAAAAY better than genocide.

In Genocide, "*It's me, Chara" appears in the same font, color AND sound as the narration for everything else in the game, like *It's a watersausage! *It's Just a regular wall *Keep attacking, he can't dodge forever, ect. Therefore, we can say that Chara is the narrator of the Story. Since Chara follows Frisk throughout the game, they translate Froggit language, gives us tips on how to fight monsters, ect.
Knowing this. . . lets get to the point. In the RUINS, you can find a faded ribbon with the narration saying
* *If you're cuter, monsters may not hit you as hard.*
That. . . is a pretty suspicious statement from Chara. Monsters may not hit you as hard. Have humans hit her harder than monsters have? Would humans on the surface hit Chara often? That's why Chara wears make up, in order to look cuter. . . so people might not hit them as hard?
At the end of true pacifist, Asriel states, "Chara climbed the mountain for an unhappy reason." "Chara said they hated humanity, though they refused to tell me why."
Putting all these pieces together,
-Chara hints that humans may have hit her often on the surface
-Chara climbed the mountain for an unhappy reason(possibly to commit suicide from the abuse)
-Chara hated humanity because of this. Learning what they did to the monsters they loved made Chara hate humans even more.
Don't just blindly assume they have mental issues. Use canon evidence from the game to support your statement. It's Toby Fox man. His Characters are way more complex than just "She has mental issues. . that's it"

Flowey, Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne and Mettaton all did get out of their way to try to murder Frisk. You don't need to do some huge "IMMA CONTROL THE WHOLE WORLD MUAHAHA" to be a villain, if you straight up tried to kill someone that's kind of a villanous thing to do, specially if they're just an innocent child. And just because they were villains it doesn't mean that they're "evil" or can't be redeemed, that's the whole message of UNDERTALE, mercy and forgiveness.
Chara, however, can still be considered a villain, or at least an unintentional villain, depending on your run and how you see things, if it wasn't for Chara, Asgore wouldn't even have tried to get the human souls, Chara was the spark that lit up the battle of humans and monsters. And, if you're in a genocide run, Chara is definetly a villain, you were counting on them to be there by your side and be your partner, and in the end they betray you and murder you.(and don't come up with all that bullshit that Chara was doing justice or anything because there's a bunch of stuff proving otherwise)

Chara's intentions always match that of the player. In the pacifist route Chara helps you SAVE asriel by helping him remember their friendship. If you do genocide then she also has the intention f killing. When she says, our plan had failed, shes talking about the pacifist route you reset so the plan to free monsters failed. If you choose to not erase the world Chara is confused as to why you showed her that killing is right and why you forced her to help you as when you begin the game, you awaken her by naming the starting character. If you do a second genocide route, then she discourages you from doing another genocide route and she calls herself the deamon that comes when people call its name. By killing everyone you are calling Charas evil side to you. You put that energy into chara depending on which route you do.

When you gain LV or LOVE, It’s not given to you. It’s given to chara. Notice how it next to her name and not yours. Maybe that is why they erase the world on the genocide path. They have a level of violence of 20, they can kill the king of monsters with ease. Even if he potentially absorbed the 6 human souls. They become a god of absolute destruction or as they call it, “the demon that comes when you call it’s name”

One thing I find interesting is that in the Genocide route Chara basically says that when they came back from the dead, at first they we're so confused because their plan with Asriel failed and they both died, but "with your guidance" the player made them realize the purpose of their reincarnation which was "power" as Chara put it. This makes me think that you ARE talking to the real Chara at the end of genocide but corrupted by you.

I've thought Chara had mental/emotional problems that made them have difficulty communicating with other humans, or emphatize with them. People tend to push individuals who are different than them away or try to fit them in stern unbreakable norms or ideas. Their life must've been hard before they fell, and I can't blame them. They'd probably seen the bad side of humanity more than the good side.

You have to remember that Undertale is a game where everyone has a reason for doing things, and that they should receive mercy even if they did something horribly wrong. For example, Undyne tried to kill you because she’s loyal to her kind and she wants to free them. But in the pacifist route, you spare her anyways and become friends with her. Papyrus tried to capture you when you had one HP left, but like I said, in the pacifist route, you spare him and become friends with him. Chara is just a human. -the reason get to name Chara is to get your lazy ass in their shoes
-the 'narrator' is you/Chara, you are supposed to guide Frisk through the Underground
-the path you chose will determine who Chara is in the game, the pacifist path wil make Chara a positive, optimistic soul, the neutral path a normal soul, nothing special. The genocide path will separate you from Chara, reviving them, making them a sadistic and genocidial, as you can see in the final moment in the genocide path
Where is it implied that Chara "possesses" Frisk? Seems like Chara got stuck to follow Frisk around, and we the players proceed to show them the "right" path.
She flat out states that Frisk falling down awakened her, and the genocide route "showed" her the "true purpose", that she was "confused" when she first woke up with Frisk. She also discourages you from doing are more genocide runs, implying that she does not actively seek out destruction of the world.

Because the writings in waterfall suggest that no Human had ever fallen into the Underground it means Chara was alive after the theory of a human absorbing a boss monster soul became a thing and this bit of information never matters throughout the entire game since frisk never absorbs any souls which means that this piece of information has another reason for existing which is to show that Chara didn't have to end themselves and if they truly didn't care about Monsters they could have just killed one of the Dreemurr family and tried to take their soul.

I think Chara, having a similar soul to Frisk, must've bonded with Frisk and was molded into what Frisk had become in the Genocide route: a heartless murderer.
When Chara takes Frisk's soul, she essentially becomes Genocide Frisk, a murderer that wants to destroy everything. Something that no subsequent Pacifist run can remedy because Chara and Frisk both share the same soul now.
I'm not sure why i thought Chara was the villain in the first place. Probably because everyone else said that they were.
Something else i want to bring up is when Chara laughs when Asgore is poisoned. In Undertale, smiling and laughing is used to cope with pain. Which might also explain why Chara was smiling when confronted by Flowey in the no mercy run.

The first human is an interesting character because we get two really different explanations about them. On the one hand the story (or Undertale he he) told by the monsters in new home suggest that her/him and Asriel are perfectly happy best friends. But based on the information in the video tapes and by Asriel at the end of the game we get a different story. I like the idea that the version we hear about in New Home is Asgore's version which is uninformed (remember Asgore never listened to the tapes from the true lab) and the real story is very different than the ones the monsters live their lives by.
Honestly both theories (the first human being good/bad) are equally plausible and I think most people just lean towards the one they find more appealing in a story sense.

Dr. Madd My personal opinion is that Chara is a very adaptive person; the way she's treated (yes I see Chara as a girl, okay?) reflects on her personality. She was most likely abused and/or mistreated in the surface, leading to her hating humanity and becoming somewhat mean. However, when she's adopted by Dreemurrs who treat her nicely, she becomes nicer as well.
This is seen during the game too: Being a pacifist makes her friendly, while killing everyone turns her evil.

It could be two different people narrating. A 3rd person narrator for Frisk and Chara starting to take over, even the narrating, in the genocide route.
My opinion of Chara:
Humanity sucks. Chara hated humanity, so Chara climbed Mt. Ebbot to get away from all of humanity. However, they accidentally fell into the Underground. When they started meeting all the monsters, they realized how nice and kind monsters were compared to humans. Chara became an honorary monster, pretty much- they hated humans and wanted then to die, but loved their fellow monsters. However, they were still a little rough around the edges after getting tossed around by humanity, but inside, they really and truly loved the ones they cared about. They loved them so much that they were willing to commit suicide in order to free the monsters. Unfortunately, Asriel's gentle nature caused the plan to fail, and both of them died.
Skip forward some years. Frisk falls into the Underground. It's unknown why, but once they do, their immense distrust and/or hatred of monsters causes them to start killing every monster in sight. Their souls gets more and more powerful along the way, gaining more and more determination as time goes on. And with their final kill (Flowey), their soul is so strong that some of the determination splits off and goes into Chara, bringing them back to life. Chara recognizes the fact that everyone they loved, Toriel, Asgore, even Asriel... is dead. Because of this, they consider the world to be pointless, and force you to destroy it. After some time of you both reconsidering, Chara decides to bring the world back, but more importantly, bring the monsters back. To prevent you from forgetting about your deal, and to be able to go on an adventure of their own once more, Chara takes your soul as their own, then does the equivalent of a true reset. They then go on whatever pathway you go on after that.
My point I'm trying to make is that Chara was just another person who was sick and tired of humanity, not some kind of serial murderer.

This was really nice to watch :) something I think that would have been really nice for you to include is the theory that Chara climbed Mt. Ebott to commit suicide. It's a really good angle to look at Chara's character from, especially when it's heavily implied that both Chara and Frisk climbed for just that reason, mainly implied by Asriel's dialogue at the end of a pacifist route. Something I really would have liked to see you address more Is Chara and Frisk's gender and why you think they're female (besides the cheeks). That may not have too much to do with this topic, although I think that may have been worth a mention.
Yep, I looked back on the video and realised I could have and probably should have talked about those things! I'll try and explain myself in a comment.
I definitely think Chara at the very least climbed the mountain to potentially commit suicide. She seems to be a very tragic character who likely never had any friends until she met Asriel. As for Frisk, I believe the player is supposed to decide his motives for climbing Mt. Ebott (naturally, I think he was going for the world record for climbing Mt. Ebott the fastest, being a professional mountain climber and all).
As for why I called Chara a girl, I admit it's little more than my head canon. The cheeks suggest they're feminine and the name just strikes me as belonging to a girl, even though it's completely made up! I honestly thought it would be tedious if I kept calling them "it" and "them" as well lol, so I thought I may as well stick with calling her a girl. Oh, and for Frisk, I believe he/she is whatever gender the player believes they are, most likely the same as the person playing (I think of Frisk as a he)!

I saw a theory once somewhere that Chara was being abused by their human family, hinted at by their hatred for humans, their desires to kill themselves on Mt. Ebott, their joy of finally finding a real family in the Dreemurs, and my favorite piece of evidence for this of is the flavor text on the faded ribbon that says "If you're cuter, monsters won't hit you as hard", suggesting that Chara, if you use the Chara as narrator theory, knows this from experience. Thoughts?

It’s entirely possible that the “Chara” we meet on the Genocide path is just filled with LOVE, and is no more reminiscent of the first child’s true nature than, say, Flowey is of Asriel. After all, the game drops quite a few hints that Chara is the narrator, and their mannerisms and speech patterns are _entirely different_ than “the Fallen Child.”

It's kind of frustrating seeing Chara painted as the victim or as a morally good character. It was one theory that picked up steam. I'll gladly stick to the old theory of a child who hates their own race for some unexplained reason that's open to interpretation. Everything in the game about Chara points to them not liking humans, and indeed, based on how Asriel talks about it, it's more likely that Chara wanted to completely genocide the town asriel went to than simple self defense. A mixture of self-preservation, hate, anger, and a desire to see the monsters rule the earth. Depending on your side of the barrier, Chara is either an angel of justice, or a vile demon.
chaincat33 Chara is human, they don't have to be an angel or a demon. Humans make mistakes and sins just like me and you, but humans are quite the jerks in Undertale anyway.

Davi Aiex Heleno Hmm... that is very interesting, somehow I've never seen that before. However, although it may be true that Chara went into the cave to seek shelter from the storm, it still doesn't give a reason as to why they climbed the mountain in the first place (and on a stormy day, no less. Not exactly an ideal day for mountain climbing, is it?). I still think that there is definitely a possibility that Chara climbed the mountain to run away from a bad situation/ possibly with suicide in mind. Then it started to rain so they went into the cave and either A. walked over to the hole because they were truly curious, or B. walked over to the hole because it looked like a possible option for suicide. I'm leaning more toward the first option here though. My opinion is that Chara climbed the mountain to run away, kind of wanting to die but also kind of scared. It started to rain, they went into the cave for shelter, they discovered the hole because they were curious, and then tripped and fell in, which ironically nearly fulfilled their suicide wish. That's just my opinion though. Also, thanks for giving me the link! It helped enlighten me a bit.
Maybe Chara lived close to the mountain, or they were playing hide and seek with another kid, or maybe Chara was being chased because they made something bad or because a bad person was chasing them, tho your idea is cool too. And you're welcome! :D
After Asriel breaks the barrier, you can go all the way back to where you fell and chat with him. He says, "I know why Chara climbed the mountain. It wasn't for a very happy reason." That sounds like suicide to me.

I've a theory, when asriel died on the flower bed, his and charas soul was still fused, and when brought back as flowey, charas essence still existed inside flowey, which caused him, now without a soul, to be susceptible to charas evil influence still within him. This is why when he takes all souls in the underground and becomes asriel again, the emotion and feeling of everyone filled asriel with emotion again, something chara didn't have.
Chara is pure malice, explaining why flowey is this way, asriels memories, charas twisted determination

If I were to become a ghost and be stuck within the body of a serial killer murdering everyone I've ever knew and loved, I wouldn't hesitate to kill them off when I get the chance.
I love how the whole message of the genocide run is "YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS!"
And people still blame Chara for killing everyone, because they don't want to be held accountable for their murders.

At the end of the genocide, they say: "Since when were YOU the one in control?"
That line could be interpreted to be directed at either us or frisk.

Flowey outright tells us that we arent actually influencing the game in any way. We are watching it, according to him. Strange that nobody ever presents on of the bloodiest murders of the fourth wall in a game that breaks it so often it might as well not be there as evidence in this.
So, this is how the genocide route works, or at least my theory as to how it works:
Frisk falls into the underground. They kill monsters in self defense. Frisk decides to seek out and kill the obviously weaker monsters to eliminate a threat to their safety. They realize what they have done as they reach toriel's house. As they sleep in the room that once belonged(as far as we know from what lore their is) to Chara and Asriel, chara themself begins to reawaken. Their soul, which had laid dormant in the flower bed where frisk had fallen, and where asriel had died, had latched onto frisk's soul, having been attached by Frisk's sheer determination. Like a parasite, chara began feeding on Frisk's determination. And that night, chara awoke enough to influence Frisk. Even as Frisk decided they would never kill if they could avoid it, Chara took partial control of them, driving them to swing their weapon instead of sparing toriel. With every increase in the Frisk's LOVE, chara gained more control over them. Until they killed Sans, after which Chara gained complete control over Frisk. They used that control to kill the ones they had once known as their adoptive father and sibling, and that gave them enough power to manifest themselves in a material body, having drained both Frisk's determination and EXP to have sufficient power to destroy the entire world. The player watches all this, before using what little influence they genuinely have to force frisk and chara into the soul selling deal, initiating the process all over again, or causing the soulless pasifist or even just a neutral run.

But Flowey broke his "kill or be killed" rule, because he doesn't want to die, he says:"creatures like us won't hesitate to kill each other, if we got in each other's way", in the genocide route everyone dies, humans and monsters, remember what Asriel said in the true pacifist route Chara hated humanity.

I thought they were both cannonly nonbinary?? They use they pronouns in the game so why would you try and use any other pronouns on them? What's the point if they use they pronouns in game? Ok so, even if that's the case, and their gender is up for interpretation, their pronouns aren't?? Like, they could be genderfluid, agender, etc.. (Which are all nb genders btw) But they use they pronouns. Why would you change the cannon pronouns they use anyways? What's wrong with they pronouns that makes you want to Change it? I might just be being sensitive but... It rubs me the wrong way. They use they/them in canon, so what ever gender you HeadCannon them as, they should still use they/them, right?

I believe Chara isn't evil or good. I believe Chara is just the embodiment of a gamer perfectionist. One who will go any lengths to be all powerful, regardless of consequences. They don't care about how they get their power. They're efficient. Chara kills others because he/she needs the EXP. That's why he/she grinds. Chara has no morals, and will use everyone as a stepping stone to achieve his/her goals. Once they clear out one world and get to the epitome of power that they want, they'll leave to do the same in another. If you could get exp by being nice and kind, I believe Chara would grind in that sense. Chara and Flowey are 2 characters that symbolize your typical RPG player.

I have a theory, I’ve heard that it’s was Frisk decision to kill as they were curious and I know she isn’t evil altogether as she reads signs for you and narrates the pacifist run. Only maybe when Toriel was killed her mind was broken and realised there was no going back. So I know a Frisk chickened out when they got to Sans maybe Chara was angry as they didn’t spare their Mother and forced them to keep going which is why she kills you if do not erase the world as they let you kill everyone and they killed their best friend for this so there mad and make you erase by continuing to kill you until you accept to erase the world.
THERE IS NO PROOF CHARA IS NARRATOR, AND PLAYER ISNT EVEN CANON. Even if they DO translate monster language, it isnt makes them ANy better. If you say ``no``, they never kill you.
