- Porsche 928, the car that didn’t replace the 911 but in 1978 when this ambitious creation was revealed, Porsches 928 had re written the rule book. It was a huge move forward and could not have been more futuristic if it had just been beamed down from the star ship enterprise.
And being the only sports car ever to be voted European car of the year gives us an idea of how ground breaking this car was at the time, even today some 40 years later it still looks current and very cool.

I have owned several 928s. I presently have a silver 1995 manual 928GTS. I only drive it 5/6 times a year, but the idea of having it there in the garage, waiting for me, is enough to cheer me up. It is truly one of the most refined sports cars ever built.
I own a 1986 Porsche 928 32valve 5speed, abs, limited slip, short shifter, Magnaflow exhaust, and Autothority chip. 180K miles and still going strong but AC stopped working.
your 928 sounds great, 180k miles for a car of that era is a testament to it's build quality, thanks for sharing
AC stops working on all of the models
You own a veritable automotive jewel.
lucky GUY, you are what about 928 8 cylinder maintenance ???
Just roll down those windows! 😁💜
Another great video Roger. As a child of the 80’s we thought this car was something from the future. Thanks to your mate for lending the car, truly stunning example of the 928.
thank you Mark, yes I remember thinking the same about the 928 in the 80's
Great video, nice to hear someone acknowledge the 928 as a GT car and not get hung up on auto vs manual transmission!
I loved my 928 and should never have sold it!
Garbage.
Why selling a 928, today there is no real better choice than this one !
@@VADORT- Simple. Because they're *FUCKING GARBAGE!*
@@alfamaniacs its not in the wrong place, its just has it in a different place and Porsche nailed it. come back when u have driven one
@@o.a.m9515 oh but I have ... I drove a friend's 930 on the track ... Terrible. Unstable under braking into corner and understeer out of corner while waiting for the turbo to spool up ... Aweful car. Even he says it's better as an investment than a car. The Boxster/Cayman, 928 's and GT are real Porsches
Very nice review. Brings back a lot of memories when as a kid I used to read all the car magazines including the comparison tests of the 928 vs 308GTB vs Corvette, etc. Ah...those were the days.
As a Road and Track subscriber I was immediately aware and impressed with this vehicle... wished I could drive one.
A manual 928 is my dream car. I've loved the 928 since I first saw one as a kid in the early 80's. Thank you.
Thanks again, I was just the same as 9
great review , stunning car.
thanks Tom 👍
They eat up miles like nothing, amazingly comfortable !
My dad had an 87 928. It was a 5.0l V8 4 speed auto. I was only 6 when he got it and I still remember it so well 30 odd years later. Beautiful editing and review, subbed
DashDrones appreciate the positive words 👍 thanks
Great video. I have been a 928 owner for about 23 years and currently have 4 of them. You hit on a lot of great points about the car and it's history.
dcarter wow 4 ! sounds like a passion.
No other car sounds as good at start up. My 87 S4 and 82 were awesome.
Remember on my walk to school each day a brand new guards red 928 would pass me en route to the local dealer. Still looks awesome today.
Tinniswood I agree
RB. I drove a 928 S4 some 30 years ago. I've never driven or been in a car that had so much road presence as that 928 had. If you came up behind someone, you could see them looking in their rear view mirror, and then slightly easing to the left side of the road.
I also believe, if I'm right, that they were the widest production car of the day too!! The Door sills were massive too. If you were a shorty, then I. sure you'd have problems stepping over them :-))..
And I hadn't been in a car with so many knobs and buttons. And being Porsche, the finish inside was sublime as usual. It was a truly stunning car for the day.
And another great video.
Congrats from your number 1, favourite stalker :-))...
Thanks Zanzi, I recall the 928 in the 80's and yes it's road presence was supreme, very wide you must have had a great experience being able to drive one back then, a rare treat, and indeed a stunning car for it's day,
@@RogerBaileyOnCars - I trust you had a great Christmas and hope you have a good New Year too. Looking forwards to more of your classy videos in 2019.
From your No1 Stalker ;-))...
EDIT - Re the 928. I had a grin on my face for the next week. That's how much I enjoyed it :-))...
Great video, thanks for posting. I appreciated your passion for the car and I couldn't help myself looking up 928s for sale even before I had finished watching.
Oh no now I need a 928 ! Great video roger keep them coming 👍
thanks Ed
One of the few cars I’ve always wanted but never owned. You’ve got me looking Roger!
hope you find one, its a special thing
I did love the 928... beautiful looking car. Dropping a LIKE on your video - Watching and Supporting!
I had the pleasure of owning a 928 GTS when it was only 2 years old, Man what a car! The GTS was king of all the 928's
Great video Roger and thank you for representing the 928! I have always loved the design and presence of the car when I first laid on one as a child whilst growing up in a Philadephia suburb during the '80s. I finally purchased a 1988 S4 manual in 2012 and have enjoyed the car all the while. I was lucky enough to find a low mileage one owner car and have campaigned her in national and regional PCA Concours events and was actually invited to a well known Michigan Concours this past summer celebrating 70 years of Porsche.
Truly a vehicle ahead of its time and once again thank you for your video!
Clygroup44 thanks for sharing this, your 928 sounds wonderful, I was smitten by the 928 during the 80's
Hello from FLA. My name is Tony. I loved my 928 but some Colombians shot it up outside the Babylon Club I was at one nite....Chinga Madre !
I just picked up my 1982 928.. totally wicked car. I love all the technology you see in such a classic car, The gigantic V8 in such a small 6 window 4 seat coupe is such a marvel. Love my Porsche❤️
My grandfather had 14 of these. Yes 14!
Wow , I get it though , I had an 86 , just about to get an 82' 3speed auto no sunroof 4.5 etc...Love em Top car
I don't know your grandfather, but I like him
13 were always on the shop.
Yeah !
My favorite car of all time the 928. What can I say it's a Porsche.
Probably one of my most favorite cars from the 80s.. Definitely looking to pick one up.. Really great video sharing the excitement of the era, and how it's so hard to capture that feeling in today's sports cars.. Really nice touch complimenting your wife as well at the end.. You're a good man, Roger.. Reminds me how classy folks value this amazing automobile.. Thanks for the effort!
One of the Finest cars I've ever owned
Enjoyed your vid. Liked, subscribed, etc.And thanks to your friend for loaning his auto. Cheers from Canada.
I had a 1990 928GT. Guards Red. Always wonderful fun, adventure, and comfort.
Eye opening video, thank you. Having 'grown up' with these you forget, or perhaps weren't aware of, all the cool details. 40 year old design, unbelievable, still looks amazing.
Hi Roger. Really like your video. No BS, just honest facts and entertaining. Thanks for the effort. Much appreciated. From South Africa.
thank you for saying and thank you for looking in :-)
I can't belive how much they've gone up in value.
Now more good ones startsv35k to 50k and 75k
Merry christmas

Thanks for sharing
I never tire of your amazing videos and superb narration.
In the pantheon of cars that were etched into my memory I remember seeing a 928 as a 14 year old kid in 1979. I thought it was a spaceship.
I like those frog-eye pop up headlights. They look unique, separated from the usual boxy pop up headlights on other cars during its time. In terms of looks, perhaps I may have to see one in person (unlikely in India) to fully appreciate it, but your shots still managed to capture much of its beauty! I wish it could have a spiritual successor to coexist with the 911 today.
Aaditya Pratap Singh thanks for looking in and your comments, theres not much like a 928 these days, except maybe the Panamera
nice video dear
Tonny's Kitchen
thank you - love your Vegetable Pakora recipe
I bought mine new in 1987...I still miss it! Yours is a beauty!
Great video. I didn't like the 928 at first but it's really grown on me and I often find myself checking them out in the classifieds. As you say, hard to believe it's 40 years old!
thanks Fezza theres not that many around
Great review Roger, thanks. I've been keeping my eye out for one of these as a project. Did you know the rear transaxle idea was actually the brainchild of Anatole "Tony" Lapine a project engineer at GM who championed this configuration in a prototype Corvette. He was later hired by Porsche, and finally put it in production.
Thanks for sharing that info Brian
Thanks Roger, one of the better accolades to the 928 on RUclips. I have owned my beautiful Metallic Forrest Green version for 4 years now and this video makes me want to take it out of its Winter cocoon and go for a blast down the West Sussex countryside B roads. Roll on Spring!! :-)
Reading comments like this makes me want to buy one :-) thanks Chris and enjoy !
This gave me a completely different perspective and new appreciation of the 928-4, thank you for this video
Totally underrated car.
It is already a collection car, prices start from 20.000. I thought maybe i can afford one.:) Great review as usual.
thanks Travel Addict nice to here from you
That is a cool car, a friend of mine is a huge porsche fan, I'm going to have to send him this way. Great job on this production! Love the lights on this car.
Brother Dunne thanks, yes those lights !
Great video Roger, keep the good work. Cheers from Europe
roger this is a brilliant video, lurv the 928 I remember them in the day great car
cheers bantom thanks for looking in again
another decent review, no waffle or BS just concise and informative stuff and that 928 is indeed a beauty
cheers Spook1111
Another great video Rodger 👍🏻 u deserve more subscribers
Very kind of you to say Ivor 👍
nice review Roger, maybe you could get a guest gig with the Carfection guys? And nice Outro too!
Thanks Patrick, a interesting proposition !
Another great video video roger, I’d love to see you do one about the 959 it’s got to be my favourite Porsche.
thanks Rob, 959 would be quite a thing
Probably the best looking lines of anything on the road...I tire easily of gazing upon the crap passing for styling these days, from the frenetic angles, to the OCD look of todays cars...the 928 is a true breath of fresh air. Too bad they were hopelessly under-powered, but that can be fixed with a "heart-transplant"...a place out of the state of Nevada can drop it a full 50-state legal, warranteed, clean-air, 556HP powerplant, making it a good runner with all the big-horsepower machines currently plying the roads...but with superior styling...
The was groundbreaking in many ways, and had the opportunity to ride in and drive a couple of 928s, the S4 was very exhilarating at 155 Mph!.....Nice video, one minor point regarding plastic encased bumpers, you have to give Pontiac credit for this idea with the GTO Endura bumper in 1968.
Brilliantly presented
Always like the 928 plus seems like we don't see many 928 in the state's.
Ouzo Lou Garage sadly getting scarce
That's a stunning example in a great colour combination. I have a 1987 S4 auto in Grand Prix White, but I had a poster of a black one on my bedroom wall and that's the one I always wanted.
Very cool car & possibly my favourite Porsche. It's just so interesting & i feel in many ways their most forward thinking car until the new 918. Noticed the Tarvin & Northwich sign, we're practically neighbours. Insightful video, keep it up 👍
Thanks for the comments Dan, yes filmed near Tarvin 👍
Porsche needs to bring this car back. This and the 944.
@Roger Bailey - nice video. I've had my '86.5 since 2000... and always will. Thx. for posting.
you have a great car
Very informative. Great video 👍. I own a sweet "78. Great job. B Moore
Very informative video Roger. Loving your work! When I was a kid, I really didn't like the look of the 928 compared to the 911 but its grown on me so much as I got older. Hope you cover more of these 'overlooked' sportscas in the future. Here's another Star Wars reference for the 928- when the headlights stand up, they look like Jar Jar Binks!
Thanks smilepermile, Ha I've just googled Jar Jar Binks and now a I cant unsee it😂
These are already nearly $70K in the USA for a fairly decent daily driver. The value is poised to go way up. I love the screen crawl at the end. I dont have a Wookie but I could carry my R2-D2 in the Passenger seat ;-)
Hey Victor, great hearing from you thank you so much for looking in, I hope you and Carol are well
Wonderful video and I loved the 928 I think it has aged well and was way ahead of its time, you could launch this car today and be impressed.
Thanks Roger. I've been extolling the virtues of the 928 for in excess of the past three decades so I'm especially glad we're singing from the same page of the venerable hymn book.
Weenson Oo I was smitten with the 928 30 odd years ago, finally got to drive one !
@@RogerBaileyOnCars I had the pleasure of testing one courtesy of Porsche who was holding a weekend event at the Castle Hotel in Taunton back in 1989/90. Taking it out on a thankfully wide dual carraigeway I was suddenly aware that we were touching 120 without the slightest hint of distress.
Glad you had the opportunity to drive one. It gave us the joy of your shared experience.
Very nice profile Roger. That is a beauty you've got there. In my humble opinion, manuals are the only way to go with 928s unless you're commuting in heavy traffic, you're lucky to have found one. I've owned 2, a 1979 Euro 5-speed, and a 1985 US auto 928S. The 79 actually outperformed the '85 in terms of power, even though it was a 16 valve engine. They are an unbelievable value compared especially to the 911 today given the level of engineering that went into them. My main complaint was the sickly electrical system. The Germans have never been as good as the Japanese in this regard. Best regards-
roadworrier11 great to hear your comments, you're right about the level of engineering and its interesting what you say about the auto / manual comparison, best wishes - Roger
Hello, Roger from Temple City, CA. I owned a 1987, Porsche 928 back, in the summer of 1993. The vehicle was given to me as a gift. The same person who gave me the vehicle, asked to borrow the vehicle, and then crashed drunk driving. The insurance adjuster claimed the vehicle a total lost. I never drove at high speeds. I couldn't afford one cash, but I can now. I am less than two weeks away from buying a 1982 race car white 928.🎉 Btw. The vehicle did grip the road.
Hi Eva, Thanks for telling your story, I hope two weeks passes quickly! - Roger
A lovely classic car and a beautifully made video again Roger
Thanks Diddi great hearing from you again
That car is immaculate. What a gem!
great car and great review
Beautiful car Robert. You always have amazing vehicles
Colorado Martini thank you !
Man this car was straight up alien tech when it came out in the late 70's. It made the 911 look very dated and quaint in comparison IMO.
Not sure, but this might have been the first car to use injection molded plastic bumper covers. Those bumper covers gave it the most unique look in the late 70's. Remember every American car back then except maybe the Trans Am and Camaro were using huge ass steel bumpers/battering rams that looked a lot like rail-road ties.
@mikegrotting Explain??? The 911 was still using tech from the early/mid 60's when the 928 came about. Other than the turbo, they were pretty slow as well. Scary handling as well(which was fixed in later 911's)
Loved the video Roger. I owned a black S4 back in the day with the same 'white linen' leather seats. With the back seats laid flat I could even fit the kids' bmx bikes in to take to the track.
glad you liked, quite a car to own back in the day
Another great video Roger!!
Thank you Mr MXC appreciated
You seem like a great co-host for my car show. :D
likewise 😀
Great video and intuitive straight to the point, blended in with great drives around Liverpool .
thanks Anthony,
Your videos are getting more professional now Roger, keep them coming!
Thanks Nick, kind of you to say
A beautiful example, but are they 928 wheels? I only recall seeing those on 944s, not that it matters too much. This is one of the best I have seen.
I own one. It’s all true. Plus there is an excellent community supporting them. Go to Rennlist’s 928 forum for info.
I wasn't aware of Rennlists' 928 forum, i'll take a look thanks Curt
Agreed. The 928 drew me in at an early age, and I 've been a fan ever since. Another nice resource is the 928 Owners Club. www.928oc.org.
The last 10-15 years they've been saying that 928 prices are going crazy. Well they never did. Well not like the air cooled 911 anyway. It's still a great bargain and offers a LOT of car for the money. Low mileage GTS's are rather expensive but S4's are still affordable.
Great car I can remember this on Top Gear. Thumbs up.
Gorgeous looking car, so much nicer than modern ones, perfect video Roger, I hope that you continue to produce more.
thanks Gina i agree
Great review, well done
M6tt B thanks for stopping by
I recently sold my 89 GT. It is a phenomenal car. I was no longer driving it and wanted crypto and a new bicycle, and don't regret the sale. My love of cars isn't what it used to be. It looked identical to yours. I should add that I live in Mendocino, California, and the roads around here are the ultimate sports car driving roads. I flogged the 928 to my heart's content. I actually got tired of it. So selling it was no loss. But it IS a fantastic vehicle.
Excellent video mate. Subbed👍. I do think the volume of the music could be reduced a bit but other than that, nice vid.
thanks - yes that music was a mistake
Proper review. 944 owner, so will excuse m'self. Transaxle cars do not receive enough love as I do miss the weight dist. in my m/b. Cheers across the pond - give the Queen my hello.
Great video, thanks!
Kean Wong welcome, thanks for looking in
Awesome vid, just wish you'd have spent some time showing the interior more, all the switches, knobs, etc. Such a perfect 10!
thanks for looking in, I'll bear that point in mind for next time
great review! subbed!
thanks - 👍👍
This car looks so futureristic. In 100 years it will be an icon.
Great video, great car! More please ;)
Thanks Garage928 theres more content to come
A brilliant review of an brilliant car! I take it you ment the transaxle was new for Porsche; I recall Ferrari used it on the 275GTB.
Transaxles has been used since the turn of the century in fact ;)
that looks like a nice example, of a great classic car, I see quite a few deteriorated, only when values go up will they be worth restoring, enjoyable video
thanks, yes I've seen a few tatty ones around.
the less there are the more it will be a collectible
quite a few bad examples around
My great uncle has a 84 928 in guards red with tan leather sitting in the driveway. Wish I could get it running again. It's such a usual looking design but it's front engined V8 grand tourer that is such a must to get running.
Wow awesome car 😍
I don’t think I’ve seen one as immaculate as this one👍
They should have kept making the 928, my father had one and I must say it is a beast of a machine. It’s powerful at the wheel. If only they still made them
Nice one Rog!, good to see a transaxle getting some air time.... just a 968 to do now then?, already loads of 944/944 turbo vids on RUclips, so would be good to see a 68 getting some luv....
GBOAF216 very true on the lots of videos of 944’s but the info and also the editing of them videos will be as good as mr baileys 👍🏻 I’d like to see a 944 one also if you can Rodger ?
Ivor Biggun Yes that’s true, just didn’t want to upset the “yo! What’s up dudes?” Kind of reviews that seem to litter the net from across the pond.... Roger, and Harry’s garage style videos far more informative.....
GBOAF216 Thanks ! if I could find a nice 968 to film I most certainly would do so 👍
Roger Bailey I’ve got a 92 coupe with 215,000 miles on her, used daily! Tidy but not concourse, scrubs up well though....
GBOAF216 where are you located ?
I bought a 84 928s last year and I love it
Great video! You mentioned you prefer a 928 in Auto... not the usual opinion, and I’m interested to understand why? Thanks very much, and hello from a big 928 fan in Sydney, Australia. Subscribed!
These cars are timeless, their design still holds up today. Better looking than the stuff out there now if you ask me...
