The Toyota filter base gasket is pre-lubed so you don't have to add a film of oil to it when you screw it in. That's why it has the plastic cover over the gasket.
Great Job, Pete! Nice to know Those PureOnes are doing the job. When she got the car, I started out using the Toyota filters but switched over. Nice to know both are good but I actually upgraded a little bit. I change the oil in that thing about every 3 months. FYI I use Pennsoil platinum. It is top quality oil and easy to get.
Used to use puralator 1 Synthetic on my Toyota all through the nineties + when k mart sold it. I’m afraid to use it in my 2005 tundra because of the vvt system it runs since it relays on oil pressure and the darn thing was probably designed around the OE filter. So I run OE on that one.
Have you tried Toyota's TRD Oil Filters? I've had good luck with TRD Oil Filters in my 2013 Tacoma and my 2010 Camry. I buy the TRD Oil filter from the dealership to ensure that I'm getting a real oil filter and not a counterfeit.

Amazon guarantees that products that are sold and shipped by them are supposed to be genuine. The problem is items that are not directly sold by Amazon that are counterfeit or could be counterfeit. I’ve been shopping on Amazon for literally over 10 years and I’ve never had a problem not getting the correct OEM product.
If you're changing your oil and filter at a reasonable mileage, Super tech filters and oil will serve you well forever. I've ran multiple UOA on two different vehicles with OCI of little under 5000 miles to little over 10,000 miles using the ST Synthetic High Mileage flavor; every report came back great. Certainly some filters are not that well made, so long as someone avoids the crap filters literally any decent oil and filter will perform sufficiently. I prefer filters with a micron rating of 99% at 20 microns.

I just share the research and if you choose something else, that’s no skin off my back.
Purolator for this Comparision. Its bigger then OEM Toyota and better built. There are Timez when aftermarket products are better then OEM. Car driven almost 30,000 Kilometres use Good Engine Oil and Good filter like Purolator.

Filtration is important but more filtration with less oil flow is less important. Anything getting past that Toyota filter isn't going to harm your engine. In the long run, that Toyota filter is better for your Toyota engine because it's letting the oil flow and filtering the exact way the engineers want it to.

What's really pertinent IMO is particle size minimum and % removal, flow rate and dirt holding capability. Weights, thickness, materials for seals, etc. not important on something to be changed regularly.

That’s why I recommend people to use one of the top four filters in the testing videos. I have hundreds of hours of research and testing with Blackstone. An internal bypass valve in the engine would seem to be a more appropriate way to deal with high pressure situations like extreme cold start. That way at least you don't risk flushing already captured contaminants out of the filter.

The bypass is just allowing the oil to flow from pan to engine without being filtered. That's part of why changing your oil on time is important. Whether the bypass is in the filter or built into the engine it's doing the same job.
@6:45, it looks like oil could bypass going through the filter media at the end cap, as the sealant doesn't extend all the way to the end of the pleat.
I have been using Purolator oil filters since the 1960’s since I started driving in 1968. Purolator is the original inventor of the oil filter for cars out there. 10 years later I opened an Auto Parts Store in 1978 and sold Purolator oil filters and some Fram for those that wanted them. After 40 years in the business now retired I still use Purolator Oil Filters. I am using the standard Purolator oil filter on my 2024 Camry SE 2.5 L but I change my oil every 5,000 miles using Mobil One Full Synthetic Oil 0w16. I am not listening to Toyota. I don’t believe in 10,000 mile oil changes. Heck in the past car manufacturers pushed 3,000 mile oil changes although we weren’t using Full Synthetic oil. It was unheard of then. I have older cars that still use the older non Synthetic oil. I will make no changes on them or in my classic cars I own in my small collection.
I've noticed newest Purolator One filters now say up to 10,000 miles and the Boss now states up to 15,000 miles a reduction in 5,000 miles on both. Wonder why, did they change something?

Hey, i just fell by this channel and i really love the comparisons you make with the filters. It's really amazing to see quality over the years with over 47 year old filters compared to recent years! About this filter 90915-YZZF2, it is the canister version of 04152-YZZA7. As a mechanic with most of my knowledge in Toyota cars, i can tell that this trend is pretty common for Toyota use the same parts in different configurations instead of manufacturing a whole new part for similar application to save cost on production of parts. The same trend is with their hub bearings, the 4 lug and 5 lug hub bearings are identical with ABS magnet ring and the hub it self, only difference is ofc. is the wheel flange. This is how i converted my old Corolla TS compressor from 4 to 5 lug to suit wider TTE rims from Avensis T25. Thanks a lot for the videos, i find them really entertaining and informational.
Most flow takes place at the pleat angle farthest from the direction of flow, so number of pleats is more important than surface area of media. You can see this in air filters - most dirt is in the pleat angle farthest from the flow direction.
The P1/PL shown looks good to me, I'd us it. Excellent efficiency rating too ((%@20um) and made in the US. The Toyota Thai Denso, typical construction. Looks ok, however it ISO 4548-12 tested 51%@20um, poor. Citing, *Amsoil sponsored test of OEM filters. Not surprised Toyota OEM adbv tested as silicone. Can't tell if green or black? But, Toyota OEM only black adbv known to be silicone. For me PL 14476, FTW. But I'd probably use the slightly longer 14477 (4386) instead. Thank for the vid.
51% glad I made the switch! I did read somewhere that Toyota engineers felt that oil flow was more important than filtration. I honestly don't know if this is accurate or true, but I thought I'd mention it.
@@jamescaron6465 Yeah the flow over filtration has been used as a fall back argument for the efficiency. But in passenger car use, flow it not really an issue. "Maybe" in racing/track situation, but no everyday driving. I don't know of any filter, even the most efficient (99&@20um), that don't flow quite well in pc use.

The burn tests & the magnification tests are always interesting. We would pick the Purolator filter over the Toyota one . The Toyota 1 seems to be not as well made although we do like the holes in the center core over louvers.
I wouldn't. Anything small enough to get past the Toyota filter isn't going to harm your engine. I'll guarantee the better filtration of the Purolator comes at the cost of oil flow.
According to the Uncle Tony's Garage channel oil filters with a spring in the bottom compress the spring at WOT and go to 100% bypass. You are the expert, what do you think?
I'm no expert. Plus every application would be different. Some engines would make more oil flow and a higher oil pressure. If the filter isn't clogged up with carbon and soot, I don't think it will go into bypass mode that often, maybe a second or two at WOT.JMHO

How does the standard Purolator perform? I'm guessing better flow but poorer filtering? I used to use the 14777 on my Corolla until they got hard to find and stupidly priced.

I'll stick with Toyota. Looks can be deceiving. Purolator may filter a little more but whatever the Toyota is letting through isn't going to hurt your engine. I will guarantee that Toyota filter has better oil flow. Toyota knew what they were doing when they made that filter for the engine they designed.

Not a big fan of purolator but it blows the OE toyota filter away big time ! Alot of toyota owners know this and how cheaply built they are and substitute ! Another thing is counterfit filters ! They also have the seal but i think the real ones my have code at the base that can be seen under blue light ! 👍👍

Great catch 👍, I completely missed that. It's a YZZN1 not YZZF2. I still believe it to be a 100% legit Toyota Thai Denso oil filter, just the N1 application instead.

Not a lot of people know but the toyota filter opens the by pass valve for around 40 seconds when start a cold engine, giving less wear on the engine, increasing engine life.
I've never heard that before. Have a citing for that nugget? At exactly what temperature is "cold engine" start? To me, bypassing unfiltered dirty oil for "40 seconds" would actually increase engine wear.Not a good thing. Unless citing provided, I'm calling bee ... on that.

Brand Ranks just did a comparison test of oil filters including a Toyota filter built just like this one. Garbage. It's the worst at filtering particulates of any filter they've tested. There's a reason they don't advertise it's micron rating and removal efficiency.
Maybe that’s true, but it’s also true that maybe we are focusing on the wrong thing. I mean Toyota filters are essentially unchanged for the past 30+ years and arguably have the most reliable engines on the market. If there was a problem Toyota engineers would have designed a filter for better “filtering”, or “efficiency” or “micron rating”. I used to feel like I think you do..that is I want 99%+ at 20 microns. But at the end of the day isn’t what’s important real world tests of a car manufacture who regularly has cars that go for 400k plus miles?
I saw that as well. I commented the Toyota looked like an oil filter and the Bosch was the worker. The Motorcraft didn't do too badly. Here are the lab tests on the filters performance after the oil was sent in for testing: Particle Range 21-38 microns: motorcraft 450.9, AC Delco 134.2, Bosch 56.4, Toyota 2774 38-70 microns. 29.8, 12, 5.3, 366.7 +70 microns, 15.3. 2.9, 1, 158.7 If you value flow the Toyota is the way to go, if filtration is your idea of an oil filter's responsibility the Bosch is the clear winner among this bunch.

just bought a 2017 Toyota sienna few months back & i see there isn't a Purolator boss for it.But found a Mobil 1 at Walmarts that looks pretty close to it. alot thicker media than the Toyota OE. 20,000 miles 99% 30 microns

Been using Supertech (Walmart brand) oil and filter for a while now. No problems. Doesn't cost much.

Most flow takes place at the pleat angle farthest from the direction of flow, so number of pleats is more important than surface area of media. You can see this in air filters - most dirt
is in the pleat angle farthest from the flow direction.
The P1/PL shown looks good to me, I'd us it. Excellent efficiency rating too ((%@20um) and made in the US. The Toyota Thai Denso, typical construction. Looks ok, however it ISO 4548-12 tested 51%@20um, poor. Citing, *Amsoil sponsored test of OEM filters. Not surprised Toyota OEM adbv tested as silicone. Can't tell if green or black? But, Toyota OEM only black adbv known to be silicone. For me PL 14476, FTW. But I'd probably use the slightly longer 14477 (4386) instead. Thank for the vid.
51% glad I made the switch! I did read somewhere that Toyota engineers felt that oil flow was more important than filtration. I honestly don't know if this is accurate or true, but I thought I'd mention it.
@@jamescaron6465 Yeah the flow over filtration has been used as a fall back argument for the efficiency. But in passenger car use, flow it not really an issue. "Maybe" in racing/track situation, but no everyday driving. I don't know of any filter, even the most efficient (99&@20um), that don't flow quite well in pc use.

You should use Pennzoil ULTRA Platinum and the Purolator Boss filter. Or you can use Amsoil Signature Series or Valvoline Extended Performance with the Fram Endurance or Amsoil EAO filter. There has been no test that shows Castrol Edge Titanium is anywhere near as good. It is middle of the row. Plenty of testing videos on here
The burn tests & the magnification tests are always interesting. We would pick the Purolator filter over the Toyota one . The Toyota 1 seems to be not as well made although we do like the holes in the center core over louvers.

I wouldn't. Anything small enough to get past the Toyota filter isn't going to harm your engine. I'll guarantee the better filtration of the Purolator comes at the cost of oil flow.

According to the Uncle Tony's Garage channel oil filters with a spring in the bottom compress the spring at WOT and go to 100% bypass. You are the expert, what do you think?
I'm no expert.
Plus every application would be different. Some engines would make more oil flow and a higher oil pressure.
If the filter isn't clogged up with carbon and soot, I don't think it will go into bypass mode that often, maybe a second or two at WOT.JMHO
@@WhipCityWrencher I subscribe to 'I Do Cars' channel where a blown engine is torn down each week. There is often bearing metal in the head and I have to wonder how it could get there without the filter bypassing.

How does the standard Purolator perform? I'm guessing better flow but poorer filtering? I used to use the 14777 on my Corolla until they got hard to find and stupidly priced.

Another utube channel called Brand Ranks built a filter testing rig and have tested 10 or 12 filters so far and their data is extremely interesting
Yep, I subscribe to that channel. Funny so far the Purolator Boss is the best over all filter in there tests, the same filter I use and reccomend.

I'm partial to Toyota filters, but that Purolator IS a good filter. I'm not sure, but Toyota looks like a counterfeit, I could be wrong. I wished someone would get a counterfeit vs. real Toyota filter. And I mean the inside guts, I know outside labels differ. Great job, Pete! 👍
The Toyota Thai Denso in the vid looks 100% genuine to me. Exact same Toyota OEM construction seen many times in other Toyota OEM filter dissections.

I'll stick with Toyota. Looks can be deceiving. Purolator may filter a little more but whatever the Toyota is letting through isn't going to hurt your engine. I will guarantee that Toyota filter has better oil flow. Toyota knew what they were doing when they made that filter for the engine they designed.
Toyota filter is made in Thailand. Not made by Toyota.

Not a big fan of purolator but it blows the OE toyota filter away big time ! Alot of toyota owners know this and how cheaply built they are and substitute ! Another thing is counterfit filters ! They also have the seal but i think the real ones my have code at the base that can be seen under blue light ! 👍👍

The denso has gaps at top and bottom pleats. Tests show a lot of particles get thru with very little restriction.

You didn't check the by pass valve light test on Toyota. These seem all to fail sealing of bypass.
It probably does. I'll try to remember to test it next time I open another Toyota oil filter. I have to do this test at night.
Not a lot of people know but the toyota filter opens the by pass valve for around 40 seconds when start a cold engine, giving less wear on the engine, increasing engine life.
I've never heard that before. Have a citing for that nugget? At exactly what temperature is "cold engine" start? To me, bypassing unfiltered dirty oil for "40 seconds" would actually increase engine wear.Not a good thing. Unless citing provided, I'm calling bee ... on that.

Brand Ranks just did a comparison test of oil filters including a Toyota filter built just like this one. Garbage. It's the worst at filtering particulates of any filter they've tested. There's a reason they don't advertise it's micron rating and removal efficiency.

Maybe that’s true, but it’s also true that maybe we are focusing on the wrong thing. I mean Toyota filters are essentially unchanged for the past 30+ years and arguably have the most reliable engines on the market. If there was a problem Toyota engineers would have designed a filter for better “filtering”, or “efficiency” or “micron rating”. I used to feel like I think you do..that is I want 99%+ at 20 microns. But at the end of the day isn’t what’s important real world tests of a car manufacture who regularly has cars that go for 400k plus miles?
I think Toyota prioritizes oil flow more than filtering but what’s crazy is that they have the most reliable engines in the market.
I saw that as well. I commented the Toyota looked like an oil filter and the Bosch was the worker. The Motorcraft didn't do too badly.
Here are the lab tests on the filters performance after the oil was sent in for testing:
Particle Range 21-38 microns: motorcraft 450.9, AC Delco 134.2, Bosch 56.4, Toyota 2774
38-70 microns. 29.8, 12, 5.3, 366.7
+70 microns, 15.3. 2.9, 1, 158.7
If you value flow the Toyota is the way to go, if filtration is your idea of an oil filter's responsibility the Bosch is the clear winner among this bunch.
Not to sure about that "reliable engine" statement. The newer direct injection engines are terrible.
Waste of time. Just use genuine filter and oil from Toyota and change them before the manufacturers recommendation.
The Purolator is pretty & the Toyota is a little shitty ,but both are good filters & mmmmmm,ADBV on the menu 🔥🍽 & gasket 🦨💨,should have done a burn test on the Toyota gasket

just bought a 2017 Toyota sienna few months back & i see there isn't a Purolator boss for it.But found a Mobil 1 at Walmarts that looks pretty close to it. alot thicker media than the Toyota OE. 20,000 miles 99% 30 microns
