Thanks, Pete, awesome job! They are nice and clean, except for the baseplates, they look like they came out of the same assembly line. You could swap the filter media in each without knowing the difference. I guess the Boss filter has a nicer paint job. I'd give the edge to the XP just for the baseplate, but I do have a boss on the Matrix right now and I am glad I do. I have an XP on the shelf and I will put it in the next time I change the oil. Great to have the peace of mind knowing I did put a good filter in. That car is her bread and butter.
Good Idea have Pete open those two oil filters up James! Now we all know! Btw I’m on my 2nd oil Change now, using the 15w40 Royal Purple with a qt of Seafoam. It’s running amazing. I put a K&N Reusable Oil Filter on it. There were expense back in the day $400-$500. But they are great Oil Filters. And they have a magnet in them. Thank you again for the suggestion. It’s working great
Makes sense that they would be very similar since Purolator and Wix are now owned by the same parent company Mann-Hummel. In fact the last few purolator air filters I bought have been re-boxed wix filters.
I used WIX filters until their parent corp Mann+Hummel moved production outside the USA. I switched to Mobil 1 since those are made in the USA and have tested well in different reviews.
Right now, I would choose the Boss because it is being exclusively produced in the USA at their Fayetteville, NC plant. That could change at any time with MH ownership. They have no loyalty whatsoever to American workers…or any other workers for that matter.

Estás empresas, cuando migran fuera de Estados Unidos, no llevan prosperidad, lo que llevan es pobreza por los sueldos indignos, y descomposición social, estas son las semillas que producen los ingresos de indocumentados a Estados Unidos.
In my opinion, the only thing that really matters is the media and bypass spring. Some of the build quality stuff appears a little betterthen others but I have never had an issue with can thickness, failed o-ring, or threads. I want a great filtering filter with a bypass valve that opens and closes properly and doesnt leak. I watched another video of filters being tested and oil was get through the bypass valve with clean fluid, clean filter, and warm oil. So not cold oil or plugged filter. If they come out of the same factory or manufacturer, the Boss could have better filter rating due to the slightly thicker media. Im not an oil or filter expert but I do own a company with hard use commercial vehicles and have been through tens of millions of mile in oil changes.
Ok good to have a back up for my regular purchases of THE BOSS. The last time I went to buy filters, they didn’t have a Boss for my truck so I got a Fram Titanium. Next time I’ll find the Wix.
I'm running that same Purolator with Valvoline 0W-16 right now on my Camry. Usually go 8-9 thousand miles per oil change. These are all highway miles. 60mph
Nice comparo Pete. I’ll take that Wix. It’s not a racing filter, don’t need the heavier base plate on the Boss. Marketing boys, “Boss”, make it heavier so it feels premium. Well, the marketing boys can go fly a kite.
Both very similar. Boss made by Purolator (Fayettville NC), XP could be made at Wix plant, but hard to say 100%. XP baseplate is Wix design, flat spring bypass on both, long time Purolator design. M&H is moving Wix design more towards Purolator. Both look well-made, polymer backing works well. Like both US made. Good filters, imo. Thanks for the vid. 👍
@OfficialNakatsuMegami While M&H own Puro and Wix, both operate out of different plants in NC. Wix in Gastonia, not near Purolator plant In Fayettville. Both are great filters. The Boss is overpriced though. Over the past several years, I’ve found the Wix XP are the best for the money. I usually order off off Rock Auto.
The white residue on the WIX anti-drain back valve is probably a mold release agent. It’s a sort of lubricant/not-sticky coating that gets sprayed into the mold so that the parts don’t stick to the metal mold.
Wish the Purolator had the larger inlet holes. The filter media does appear the same visually, but the Brand Ranks video showed that the Purolator did a significantly better job at filtering small particles. It must have like an extra layer of fine media in there or something, despite looking the same. Maybe there is some variation in other filter sizes.
Been using the Boss filters for years now. Is my go to filter. Even knowing the 2 are pretty much identical, next week the wix could be different, so i just stick to a sure thing. Boss filter, penz ultra plat and a little lubeguard biotech, best quality vs price.

@@WhipCityWrencher it’s the boxes that state 20k mile intervals. The side of the box filter picture even shows it’s not full synthetic anymore. Kind of sad what Mann and Hummel ruined Wix
The Boss got top honors as best all around oil filter in an engineers test of oil filters (it included the Wix): ruclips.net/video/0ReYsM9OMuI/видео.html
Looks like the non XP are made in China now. Not sure about the XP. Just picked up a Boss
Most of the reg. Wix I open are made in Mexico. IMHO the Boss is a very good, made in USA oil filter.
14476? That's a camry oil filter!
THERE BOTH OWNED BY THE SAME PARENT COMPANY
They are NOT the same. The filter media is thicker with the Purolator for one. Next go for the burst strength of the canister. The Wix can not hold under the pressure as the Purolator. There are tests out there that show it.
You said clearly that you would go for the wix but they both idénticas and Boss has the thiner bubber where the filter sits on the oil housing of the car and wix is thicker But as usual you missed the microscopic quality example of the filter mesh being more solid and sticky when the xix was more spread lose noticeble on the screen. Again you need get after 5k syntetic oil test on both cut-open and you will be really surprised how ugly the wix turns out. Plus the metal quality of the wix is as much as Fram. Go figure!
The only difference I saw between the two is the base plates.
@@WhipCityWrencher Base plate made out of scrapped recycle metal
Well on your next filter review you should address these concerns. Looking forward to your video effort 😊
