It is worth mentioning that allisons use the GM through case connector which are problematic with leaking atf past the epoxy and terminals. This will put one into limp mode and can be easily overlooked. Threw me for a loop when I worked at a trans shop. Its one of those things to babysit and have a look at a few times a year. Not entirely sure if we used to shave the friction material off of one side of some of the clutch plates to gain clearance for more clutches and steels on allisons, but it worked great on some entry level built gas race stuff where the motor was a bit overbuilt for the trans. My old boss owns the "Christine" pro modified drag car, so we got contracted for racing applications and hotrod restoration work all the time.

I thought torque was the enemy of transmissions not horsepower. But when i listen to these podcasts guest are usually saying horsepower numbers not torque. We all know heat is a big killer of transmissions I think that goes without saying.

They are both related given the horsepower to torque relationship with diesel engines. Guests are usually using horsepower as a reference point, not to disregard the torque number. They are definitely factors, and heat as you mentioned.

This hp/tq ratio was a stumbling block when I Scattered my RH 46 going down the interstate. A RH47 conversion folks were trying to sale me a bomb proof " you can't make enough hp to have a 400hp box brake. Your pump maxes out at 400hp. " there rated tq was based on P-pump static timing 2:1 = 800tq max. A VE has variable timing with a 3:1(PPD Dynoed 491.0@1846 178.3@1976 wheel) therefore an 800tq box is going to s... the bed when it sees 1200tq. So much for bomb proof; I mean 290/803 is a cupple turns on the smoke screw and a small hit of NO2 and my otherwise 100% stick 1st gen will make you want to burn the mattress and bed frame after the 47.... the bed. So I went with Allison ('07 6sp) with some tricks from a MEDIUM DUITY Bulder, making theas live in 42k GVWR trucks in Dallas, tx.

100%. I'm putting an Allison 6 speed behind a 7.3, so I called a vendor and asked what the torque rating was on their kits. I was told the 750 hp was 1800 ft lbs. rated, which I thought was odd seeing I've never seen a 750hp Duramax make 1800. Maybe I just don't pay enough attention to them... Either way I should be under 1300, so plenty good.

The aftermarket for diesels use the term horsepower because that is what most people are accustomed to. Torque is of course correct because it's real and hp is really just a mathematical number derived from torque. Think about non car/truck people, if you told them what torque they would be confused and probably go elsewhere. Love the name btw!
