"Children deserve high-quality, high effort products" FINALLY someone gets it! I have never understood people going, "it's okay if it's bad, it's for kids" when it comes to entertainment. We wouldn't say that about food or education - "it's okay if their textbook is a printed-off Wikipedia page or their lunch is day-old French fries, it's for kids" - but I hear that all the time for toys, shows, books, etc aimed at kids and it's wild. Kids deserve decent quality stuff, actually.

Honestly even with food and education it is like that, they just don't say it out loud. I mean look at the education system and school in more or less any part of the world or school lunches, children get the bits and scraps of our society that adults don't want.

this reminds me of the change that myscene made halfway through. they went from trendy, fairly replicable fashion to basic blingbling outfits when barbie got replaced by kennedy. it wasn't exactly a rebrand, but a switch in vibe for no other reason than those dolls apparently sold better with children. as an adult, i appreciate original cohesive outfits much more than i did back then. i think that's because as a kid you change those outfits on the dolls much more than you would as an adult collector. the novelty of the doll matters much more, while as an adult you look much more for consistency in a brand.

The Rainbow High rebrand smells of someone completely new to the project coming in, paying attention to nothing about the existing concept except the word “Rainbow” being in the title, and deciding that what the line needs is unicorns, explicit fantasy worlds and Lisa Frank esthetics.

I think when people say this rebranding is happening due to Bratz, what they mean is that MGA is focusing on Bratz as the more fashionable glamorous line for older kids, teens/tweens and to an extent adult collectors, and they're trying to pivot Rainbow High more towards younger kids to cover all demographics.

    • @CanonessEllinor
      @CanonessEllinor 6 месяцев назад +47

And that, as mentioned in the video, most likely the designers who used to work on RH have been reassigned to Bratz. As in animation, it’s not “budget” that’s the limiting factor, it’s talented creatives.

I do personally think the new direction is a Bad Thing- not inherently, but like. I vividly remember being a little girl and YEARNING for dolls like rainbow high, with sturdy articulation and detailed outfits and accessories, and there were none. And now there’s going to be none again, because RH was the only line doing that.
Honestly I think making dolls simpler, cheaper, and tackier like this doesn’t even effectively target kids (although it’s intended to). It effectively targets adults who have a particular view of toys and children- that toys are basically jangling keys for them to inevitably break or lose interest in, not meaningful possessions they can learn to take care of and cherish long-term
Obviously not all toys can or even should be heirloom quality, but I think a middle ground between ‘$20 disposable piece of plastic’ and ‘$200 precious display piece’ should at least EXIST, yk? :/ including for the under 10 demographic

No lol. It's not a bad decision the only people who think this are whiny adults who are complaining over a doll line intended for KIDS. RH was always for kids and always will be. Sure the dolls are cute and many adults like them too but MGA didn't necessarily make the line for adults. It makes more sense for them to focus on Bratz this year. Bratz is the doll line that made them who they are. With Barbie and The Barbie Movie success of 2023 why would they not try and push for Bratz this year? They cut back bc RH was not making them enough money and they obviously can't keep making the dolls like they used to. What they're doing now is very strategic and makes perfect sense. RH just wasn't beneficial for them. Y'all need to just accept that and move on.

Like I’m honestly sick and tired of these companies underestimating kids, especially littler girl’s, intelligence and appreciation for details. Like why do we keep reducing little girls into just glitter and unicorns? and no there’s nothing wrong with either of these, I love both! But theres more to it than that, its about WELL PUT glitter and actually CUTE unicorns yk? Kids don’t just like slime and stuffing them into things? They like shaping it and customizing it so it has different sparkles and beads and stuff

So I have an anecdote for you. Normally when I'm shopping for dolls, it's at a time where no one else will be in the toy aisle. But in an effort to find a Clawd Wolf on clearance at Target, I went on a weekend afternoon. They were out of Clawd, but I did get to hear a little girl excitedly talking about all the dolls in the doll aisle. She was really excited about Rainbow High's new slime gimmick, every time she realized there was another doll that had it, she pointed it out to her mom. And this kept up down the aisle. The other doll she was drawn to was Abbey from Monster High G3, and that made me happy to overhear. Even the mom was gushing about how pretty Abbey was, I felt very validated just casually listening in on this.
I'm glad that she had stuff that appealed to her, it's nice to know that dolls can exist for both adults like myself and kids like her. I hope she gets to enjoy playing with some really great dolls that are just right for her. Because at the end of the day, that's what they're for: joy. Dolls are there to make you feel good, by playing with them, whatever play means for you. For me, it means customizing them, since I like expressing myself through art. When I was a kid, that meant taking them on fantastical adventures through magical worlds, with battles of good vs evil. For some people, that means dressing them up and brushing their hair, giving them a nice bath. So long as these new dolls spark joy for someone, I can be okay with them. They don't spark joy for me, I'm okay with not purchasing anymote RH dolls (the removing of articulation kind of kills it for me). But I hope they do it for someone else.
I like listening in on the doll aisle. You hear a lot of really interesting things. It's not often someone engages me in conversation, but when they do, it's good (like the cashier when I did get to find a Clawd, he asked if I'd seen the second movie, recommended it even, good day). A couple years ago, gosh, it was maybe March? I had some birthday money and decided to treat myself to a Rainbow High doll I'd been eyeing for a while, Brianna Dulce. She was so pretty, but that price, oof, not justified at all, and she never clearanced out at my location. Her stock was always wonky too, that entire release was a mess. But while I was looking at her, another woman came into the aisle. We both were masked up and kept our distance. She was looking at an LOL OMG doll, the one with the red, yellow, and green braids and buns (I don't know her name but I remember this doll very clearly). And we had a conversation about dolls and how much they'd changed since we were kids. She was thinking about the doll as a gift for a kid in her life, but in some ways she wanted it for herself. I felt that. I hope if she still wants that, that she can find a doll for her someday, something that sparks joy. In the end it convinced me to go through with bringing Brianna home, I wasn't sure I would given her fashion wasn't exactly what I wanted. One day I'll get that donut fabric out and sew her a new dress too. X'''D I don't think I would ever want a full price RH doll again, no thanks, but I'm glad for what I have, they're more than enough.

this was so lovely to read ❤ it gives me hope when I read comments by other adult collectors acknowledging that dolls it's a good thing for young people to get to experience some of the best dolls on the market. it's important that we all step away from what is a quite insulated community and be with our real world physical communities. Sometimes it can seem like not having a doll line targeted at you anymore is a big deal, so when I get to feeling that way I go hang out with my dog and put my phone away for a while. stuff can't ever replace connection and we all desperately need connection as humans.

I don’t understand why they didn’t take advantage of that! Seems like a missed opportunity. Sales probably would have went UP! Also kids are NEEDING make up that’s are age appropriate right now. The thing that hurts the most about the reboot to me is that RH felt like the only brand that u nderstood what playing dress-up actually entails. They weren't just designing a character with an outfit you could remove, but thinking of how you could make your own outfits. For a long time, it felt like doll designers either didn't understand or just didn't care to make that effort, and RH was such a breath of fresh air on that front. I think it's such a shame that they clearly had no idea how to reconcile the kids and collectors markets. Never any fashion packs, never any true budget dolls, and never stopping to breathe.
I can't help but see this reboot as a parallel to MH and EAH's budget-friendly rebrands in 2016, and I think this is going to end up much the same. Yet another doll brand built on quality and creativity giving those things up in favour of trite plastic schlock, and then wondering why nobody wants to give them money anymore.

I really agree that they're missing the mark on how they're going about this rebrand. I'm personally disappointed, but I'm also frustrated for the younger kids it's titled to.
Like okay, we're losing wrist articulation, it's cheaper and less of a choking hazard for those young kids. Okay cool. Why why WHY would you put Skylar in a plastic jacket with long tight sleeves then? Little kids are gonna struggle with that, and due to that clear plastic material, they'll likely poke a bunch of thumb sized holes in the sleeves, or get frustrated with it!
Not only that, but there's no hint of the fashion oriented stuff. I don't mean in the designer clothing way, but in the allowing kids to play and be creative way. Stuff like that playset with all the fabric that you can pin on the mannequin don't seem compatible with all of this. Imo that's lost value in the eyes of parents, something going from a positive message about creating and fashion as an art to just... Slime? Not to mention the kids that actively have in interest in fashion, sewing, makeup, etc not getting to live out that kind of fantasy with these dolls. Give those kids a break, they can't go to gogirlgames and play dress up to their hearts content like I could!
But yeah. I'm salty but I can deal with it as an adult creator. It's disappointing. But I agree that they're just not actually catering the dolls to the kids, it's hastily cobbled and honestly rude to their audience.

Well, the current kids have Sims 4 (base game is now permanently free and if they're on PC then tons of CC is available although parents need to maintain it for functionality and cultivate it to make sure it's age appropriate.) Whenever it comes out, Sims 5 is going to have a free base game at launch lol. Not as much official fashion without DLC but it does give them the chance to build their own doll house and RP almost anything they want and if they just want a dress up game they never have to leave CAS. If they're older kids, they can learn how to make their own CC. (There are also some other potentially more exciting simulation alternatives on the horizon, such as Paralives and Life By You, but they won't be free.)
That said, actual paper dolls are something that can be made by a creative adult or a child who has been taught how tabs work. I had published paper dolls and I did make some of my own back in the 80's/90's so while I don't think they're made as much by companies now (though I have seen re-usable sticker and wooden dolls with magnets that work similarly), artists could also have some free paper dolls online. I'm not saying you're entirely wrong, it's still kinda bleak on the dress-up game front (I know there are some phone apps but I'm not sure how Love Nikki works for example as far as what outfits you start with before progressing) but there are some options available. I don't blame you for being salty though! :)

I have no personal stake in rainbow high, they aren’t for me,(just personal taste, but I still have to applaud the detail and work put into rh until now) so it’s very interesting to see the discourse around this rebranding. I can draw parallels to certain other pop culture phenomenon, where those in charge listening to the online discourse hurt the end product as a whole. Very interesting to see how this goes.

I think if this line existed alongside releasing like 2 higher quality dolls that’d be okay! It feels like the reaction to current RH is because of how G2 Monster High went haha they took a fan favorite brand and made them lesser quality and for a younger demo. But again I do think if they came out with a nicer quality doll, or even a more collector doll, every once in a while, or like 2 per “wave” that’d be giving older collectors something with the rebranding.

When I saw those slime animals I knew stuff was going down. I know slime is really popular with kids but I sort of wish MGA made (another) specific toy line FOR slime which would be kind of interesting and different once you consider it but I understand that we're not exactly in a time where people have that sort of money for experimentation so it makes sense that they'd use RH as a launching pad for this rather than doing anything new.
And as I mentioned in the first video, I think a lot of companies don't really understand that you still have to market towards KIDS first and foremost vs the collector market, otherwise you get instances of dolls sitting on shelves unsold because they're too expensive for parents to buy them FOR their kids and there are only so many adult collectors as they do not make the bulk of the market. This direction is making it more 'kid friendly' I guess but it's sad that it had to take such a dive in order for MGA to think this would work, vs marketing better on top of keeping up with different styles in order to make the clothes interesting. You don't have to have a doll constantly wrapped up in name brands all the time to look 'cool' because I look at the LOL/OMG dolls which are a lot more fantastical in their outfits and they're doing a LOT better.
I just hate the MGA designs of their slime animals. XD Most of them have been molds used for almost a decade at this point so it feels like they had like a big ol' tub of them sitting in the warehouse and decided to just ship 'em out with the RH rebrand to finally get rid of them. Seriously, of all the things they could redesign those animals need to be it. They look so cheap and as if they were trying to ape the Blyth/My Little Pet Shop rebrand...FROM TEN YEARS AGO. XD

I'm seeing comments talking about how MGA possibly wants RH to occupy the younger demographic slot, while Bratz becomes the adult collector-friendly brand, and I agree with them, but I also agree with you in that it seems very rushed. What I've also remembered thanks to other comments is, having worked as a cashier for about three years, that not only is slime really out of fashion between kids nowadays, while "interactive" pop-its are the new rage (and rage do I feel indeed whenever I have to hear that high pitched voice saying "welcome to the first game!" before the most annoying rythm comes out the bootleg Pikachu or Mario at the top, but I digress); the other problem is that glitter is now banned in the EU, so I don't know what MGA is going to do about that (let Na-Na Surprise take the European market? Have "eco-friendly" slime? Only the future will tell)
Edit: I've been informed RH is going to have ready-made slime in European releases, and that its glitter is different

second comment! i wonder if it would have been better if RH rebranded to be even more adult collector focused, like IT dolls. If they did smaller, better releases and just overall be more deluxe. They could still charge the premium like they want without changing the core identity of the series. Quite honestly, i don't see why they can't still do that. Have the lower budget playline dolls for kids and the higher end collector dolls that actually Feel collector quality, similar to how Monster High does g3 and g1 releases now.

But if I want a collector's monster high doll, I have to buy a body sculpt that looks emaciated and I worry could be triggering for me to see all day.
I do think that the playline-collector divide can be really helpful for split audiences, but I don't want them to freeze Rainbow High in time and never innovate like Monster High has

That would have been nice, but it wouldn't have been sustainable I think. Maria Garcia, Roxie Grand, Paris, The Costume Ball dolls etc. did not sell well with adult collectors and remained on shelves/in the Amazon warehouses for a long time. Most adult collectors also wait for sales if they don't immediately click with the doll and that doesn't really work in MGA's favor. Also MH is not doing so hot in the adult collector sphere. From the Mattel Creations/Skullector release disasters, to Vampire Heart Draculaura's consistently smashed box, to the somewhat underwhelming Off-White collab, to how people have seem to have started to lose interest in the Howliday dolls.

Don’t apologize, I’m excited about the relaunch, too, because they remind me both of the ones I collected as a child, and the ones I wanted to collect as a young adult! I was referring to the oldest Hasbro lps in my earlier comment, yes the ones with the bobblehead. I found out the year the lps were produced because on the bottom of the lps or sometimes located in other places on the littlest pet shop's body depending on which mold, is the year in which the lps was produced at least I think that's what that number is based on my research and my own observations. I have some of the first ones ever released and when I looked at the bottom of them I saw the year 2004 which is the year I was born. Oh and if you have the money and space for them maybe you could start collecting the new lps if you see a design you like. I am a collector of littlest pet shops though so I might be biased. I'm just saying if you want to get some lps you should. Also it's cool to know there were young adults who also appreciated toys/collectables like I do now as a young adult, I also appreciate that there are older adults that still appreciate toys/collectables. Though to be fair this video was about toys, Rainbow High which I now realize I never mentioned in either of my comments and I do like Rainbow High or well I used to, I don't like the new reboot/rebrand dolls and I am not a fan of those crystal pets, I can't exactly place why I don't like them I just don't. Also I don't like the whole slime gimmick and how it is being utilized with the accessories and pets, slime shouldn't be anywhere near a doll it could get in their hair and ruin the doll. Though I do like Rainbow and Shadow High I never collected any of the dolls before, only because I don't have the shelf space to display them and my lps collection is a bigger priority to me so I want to focus on collecting that and maybe one day if I ever complete or nearly complete my lps collection and can make space in my room I will buy my favorite Rainbow High and Shadow High dolls. My favorites being the Storm twins Naomi and Veronica, Delilah Fields, the Sunny and Luna two pack, maybe the Holly and Laurel two pack though their dolls are not my favorites I just might get them to complete all the twin sets, Ash Silverstone, Glitch, Ainsley Slater, Gabriella, and the three girls with different body types that I somehow forget the names of, I also want to someday get Lily but by that point she might be even more expensive than she already is. I would collect the dolls now but like I said before I have nowhere to store them or display them. I realize went on a long rambling tangent yet again, I hope that's alright. i've been open in my distaste for the new direction, but it entirely hinges on your consensus here: i complain about the direction not because i think it's some sort of "betrayal" to the adult collectors, but that it's a half thought out rebrand that feels like someone who doesn't care about the audience they're marketing to came in and decided on. i almost think that rh moving to be more directly targeted to young kids is a response to not only bratz playline returning, but MGA realizing that now that NANANA surprises (primarily young kid focused) and LOL OMGs and mermaze are falling to the wayside (older kid focused) they needed another young child brand while bratz now fills that older child niche. obviously i know nothing for a fact, just the vibe i get. i love rainbow color explosion aesthetics, i buy stuff for kids all the time as someone in their late twenties, and honestly if it felt like there was love put into the new direction of rainbow high, i would probably still be into it even if the slime and most of the pets don't appeal to me. the lack of heart, the way it feels rushed, and finally the fact that the dolls are still $25 despite lacking the details they had previously that made them feel worth the extra cost (i'm sure the price is justified and i know that the prices for the previous rh lines were weird and inconsistent, i'm just poor lmao) makes me very uninterested. i've heard kids like them, though, so i'm glad kids have something new to get excited about and i'm being genuine when i say that- my teen years being surrounded by the fall of bratz and monster high and the rise of blind boxes, barbies wearing jersey dresses, and no other doll lines wasn't necessarily inspiring as a doll lover, i hope kids always have fun options for dolls that appeal to them! if rainbow high world is that, then i hope it holds up to them like monster high g1 does for me.

what you said about RH being geared more toward young adults was actually one of the reasons i've always disliked it. i felt like it was very... not kid friendly? i mean, in regards to how kids generally played with dolls. RH dolls were more expensive and had more intricate outfits, more delicate pieces (i own Coco and her earrings will just like, fly away if you so much as breathe on them), etc. if i were a parent, i'd be very hesitant about buying one of them for my kid because i wouldn't want them to just throw her around and cut all her hair off like i know kids do to their barbies, for example. The dolls i like to collect now are a lot of what I had always wanted from dolls as a kid, and I honestly can't really imagine my kid self wanting a rainbow high doll.

I live in Brazil and only the first dolls of Rainbow high came to Brazilian stores, Nanana and Bratz never even showed up, and that really bugs me cause people were buying RH here, they were buying the first dolls, they were importing the others, so you’re just losing this big market full of people that are willing to do a lot to buy your product, and for what? Is not like MGA doesn’t have the resources to have a really wild global distribution

i do kiiind of think maybe the bratz reboot influenced this, not them trying to "sabotage" rainbow high but the fact that mga doesnt really seem to have a good doll for younger audiences right now? i mean OMG is still around but they seem like theyve had... much worse releases lately and might be on their way out. so it kind of makes sense if they want to shift RH to be their brand for younger audiences and have bratz be the one for older audiences now. although i definitely agree with people saying they shouldve just changed junior high to be for younger kids and left the bigger rainbow high dolls alone

I said this on the last video, and I'll say it again; The Rebrand is absolutely not my style, and THATS OK!!! I think they were made with children in mind, and that is totally fair because they are dolls. In my honest opinion, i think it's actually a good thing they're taking a break from giving us the high-end stuff. I know from personal experience that entering the R/S/JH fashion line is daunting. I remember thinking i had a lot of dolls at maybe 54, and i still had 80 something to collect! I feel like the new dolls are a VERY necessary breather from sort of.. "having" to collect the dolls, if you catch my drift. Its completely up to the collector if they wanna spring for them or not because they probably already have the higher end version of the dolls. Sure it could expand their collection, but its not something many people are going to be inclined to.

So I saw a video about Rainbow High some weeks back and in it the doll RUclipsr brought up how MGA was getting legal problems from celebrities over many of the dolls being similar to them (or close to legal problems via Billie Elish) as well as a past legal battle they got from the Blackeyed Peas over parodying one of their songs for a past commercial. (the unicorn dolls btw)
I brought up in the comments that these legal issues could be a big reason for the shift in no name brand nods to the clothes and no longer making characters be a reference to a celebrity (this latter one I feel also applies to OMG given how latter dolls have been looking more og than a reference) as MGA’s staff is probably getting tired of dealing with that stuff a lot. The RUclipsr replied with them being in full agreement on it and taking this in it’s understandable that MGA would want something that’s less of a hassle legal wise.

Like within these dolls I see glimmers of design and style but I think some sort of oversight came in said "do this do this, can't have that". If they're leaning into the gimmicky slime stuff, it would be cool to see them fully lean into that direction. Like make your own slime kits full of glitter and what not BUT include accessories (skirts, jackets, etc) that could be filled with slime! Like the accessories could be like clear plastic pockets that the slime could be poured/injected into or something. Dunno how sustainable that is cuz in my experience slime dries out really fast (I haven't played with slime in many years though so they might last longer now, idk)
anyway this is just a random idea, if they are going this rout I'd also love to see some more princessy/fantasy/fairy outfits, I know as a kid (and an adult collector) the easiest way to get me to buy a doll is to put her in a big puffy ballgown!

Still think Bratz is still partly the reason for Rainbow High rebrand.
Not for like sabotage reasons, though.
A trying to have your cake and eat it too situation
In theory, they both cover the same niche ("edgy/High fashion") aimed at teen/late adult market
You don't want your products to have to fight for the same space.
If you had to choose one brand to keep that image, Bratz is the safe bet, because it's Bratz, it has a pedigree.
And retool your other cash cow to fit a younger demographic
Now you get to keep both of your successful doll lines

the thing with bratz is though, they have no demand internationally. So many international fans have to get them through online because they are never found in stores. For Canada, some people have found bratz at stores like EB games, but even then they're very limited and scattered, so not every EB games gets them. Where as RH can be found from EB games to walmart to even hardware stores like Canadian Tire.

Make it based on Rainbow High dolls if you want, change em up if you want- make it a Spin Off! I will be happy either way...but that is a smart way to keep the adult audience AND the adult money from adults without children to buy these slime dolls for.
I said it before and I will keep saying it, I am an adult who LOVES Rainbow High, and LOVES slime....and this is NOT it for me. I'm not a child, but I play with my dolls and most adults around me refer to me as child-like, which doesnt make me a child- nor the demographic for these dolls per say, but I do feel I am the target adult they would hope to appeal to, and it didnt work for me personally.

Good analyses. I had the same thoughts. I think after the initial succes of RH they just put out too many dolls in short amount of time and I guess that hurt sales since it was not possible to get them all so many collectors waited for dolls to go on sale or just being more selective what to buy. On the rebrand I feel they could have had a parallel line of dolls catered to younger kids like Junior High and just produce maybe less high end fashion dolls to make them more desirable again. I do understand that aplayline of dolls should be for kids or preteens and not adult collectors that is just a bonus. I just wonder if kids will like the new direction of RH. I mean the kids that love RH from the beginning and like the fashionable aspect are nog going to like these new ones. Time will tell ;-)

Unfortunately every release i had to only focus on the dolls that i really wanted and leave others behing, especially during the rainbow vision era. I couldn't get my hands on the kpop dolls because 1. I always waited for sales but i never got them anyway because the discounts were only like $3 off. Now i have to pay reseller price but i'll probably wait till they end up at goodwill 😂. Most collectors i know are panic buying for dolls like Brianna delilah sabrina jewel richie and fantastic fashion poppy who randomly disappeared off shelves 😐. Now everyone's selling their delilahs, sabrinas, briannas, and ff poppies for $100+ and delilah's price is so bad i cant.

I don't understand that loss of articulation of Rainbow World and OMG LOL Surprise AND the loss of stands with the latter as well as 2nd outfits in the former. By all means focus on Bratz if that is your plan, but instead of "degrading" existing quality in your other lines, simply produce less lines until Bratz is on solid ground. MGA takes the risk of losing consumers in existing brands to promote a new/old brand.

I think that rainbow high was always too cheap for what they offered (mind you, not in Europe, we paid 50 euros for the basic lines) if you compare it to Barbie, who just isn't into details as much. I like the new rainbow high dolls, they are not as sophisticated, but I guess it makes sense from a monetary standpoint for the company. These are very high quality children's dolls. It feels like a new start. Maybe they'll get more intricate in quality and fashion as they find their new identity again. I hope they make some quality special editions to quench our thirst, and I hope that monster high remains as is. It makes sense for the edgier dolls to be marketed towards adults, and them. Being more intricate and concept-ey, and the more playful ones to be for children. Idk. I understand it's different but I don't think it's a bad job on mgas part. We were a bit spoiled with the quality and price, for them to be a worldwide brand and keep on creating more experimental products, someone had to get the sellout part of the stick. I hope they do well, and become more intricate and personanle as they find their new identities with user feedback and market research.
Again, the quality has been INSANE up until now, so seeing it becoming more simplistic is not weird to me, and I still consider it value for money.

I think that the best approach to RH is to focus on providing kids and adults with dress up. Like, the slime gimmick is bad because Mga is not a slime company. Kids can make it at home, go to five below, amazon. For not even a quarter of the cost.
Cute lil gimmicks are fine, especially as an adult who enjoys having to work a little for my toys. MC2 was p cool.
And I agree that the issue is the lack of care in execution. No rhyme or reason. Recycled items. Honestly, I like what mattel did with releasing core dolls with new outfits.
Also as much as "this is for kids" is used, it's also overused. Kids deserve quality just like us. Their parents are the ones who have to spend the money. If I'm getting a toy for my kid, id rather the tiny easy to lose accessories over sticky messy slime. Kids can find entertainment in anything so them not liking the old RH isn't at stake.

Tbh I've saw this coming since the beginning. The quality made their prices steep and they only got steeper post pandemic, the frencuency of the lines and spin offs came out plus the increase competition in the market. I think the the thing that truly put the nail in the coffin was their failure at making a proper budget line and relying on dolls $24 and up. I think it was kinda evident that MGA was losing money from all the lines outside the rainbow high franchise and the franchise themselves. Bratz seems to be atleast profitable. Im just rambling but I truly think with better planning and organizing rainbow high can be good again.

It's interesting what happens to brands that try to cater to the 'older devoted' audience ... I don't collect dolls (I collect vintage stuffed animals of all things), but you see same stuff whether it be a... dying petsite... dying amusement park... whatever. I've watched Neopets over the years try desperately to cater to its old established userbase but, obviously what it needs is NEW PLAYERS, and to be APPROACHABLE to anyone checking the front page. Older players are more discerning, nitpicky! They have some legacy of preconceived notions of 'good' and 'bad'. They can't be objective about anything. The doll community looks just the same. It can be kind of intoxicating to cater to them but, it's probably just bone deep more profitable to just cater to newcomers.
That said I feel like rather than looking at what other toy lines are doing I would love to see a doll line pay attention to... inspirations outside of that but alluring to kids, there are so many things you could add into a line that would totally get attention from new buyers. More of the same as the other shelves won't make you stand out, it will just make you blend in. Bratz and Monster High did amazingly because they were shocking compared to the standards as I see it!
If they're going to jump into the rainbow unicorn pool I wish they'd go whole hog and give everyone some crazy horse head molds for a new doll line (: and HOOVES! PAINTED hooves! and big manes and tails. And magnetic mouths so they can hold an apple or carrots like the Grand Champion toys. That's my take
