This was filmed in the middle of the pandemic, everyone was at varying levels of comfort with shared spaces/face coverings. They filmed in separate studios across the country and you can even see how Taylor's team is distanced to the best of their ability even though they are filming in the same room.
William Bowry was Joe, her boyfriend of 6 years who she talks about helping writing the song during lockdown in the beginning. He was supposedly a private person, and they used the pseudonym "william bowry" for the songs he co-wrote on... but eventually Taylor let everyone in on it through this interview

While this is true, that’s not why Justin’s face is covered. He is just an intensely private person, and back in 2016 he started obscuring his face in press photos, etc. “Faces are for friends only.”

Taylor is so humble despite her insane success. SHE is afraid Justin would say no. SHE says it would hurt too much. Then SHE, goddess of all songwriting, is waiting for the shoe to drop and Justin won't allow the song on the album. People are made just by Taylor wearing something they created, and she's still open about her insecurities. I believe that is why so many people love her so much. She has maintained her personal normalcy, thanks to her family.

Um... This is cute, but she is right to be humble. Bin Iver and Justin Vernon are ridiculously huge in the genre Taylor was very new to before she wrote Folklore and Evermore.

“Leaving through the side door” always seemed like such a great way to refer to someone kind of checking out of a relationship emotionally long before the official breakup because they’re not being heard. The song’s a great exploration of two people in a relationship who are unable to communicate with each other. Taylor has also collaborated with Justin and Aaron’s side project, Big Red Machine, as well as Aaron’s main band, The National.

Bon Iver is Justin Vernon. He records as Bon Iver, and Taylor's cowriter and producer Aaron Dessner is best friends with him. The two of them have a project called Big Red Machine (Aaron is from Cincinnati, hence the name) where they invite other artists to record with them. Taylor did a song called Renegade for a Big Red Machine. Bon Iver did Exile and the title track for Evermore with Taylor.

Imo this is one of the great break-up or heartbreak songs. I think the little bit of early confusion may have impacted your experience of hearing it for the first time. You should listen again with the lyrics pulled up, or watch the lyrics version on her RUclips channel. A truly powerful song that paints so many vivid images with so few words of a relationship that just didn’t or couldn’t work. “Homeland”, “town”, “crown”, and even “exile” imply a long-term, committed relationship with unresolved feelings on both sides. They were “home” for each other; now they’re both exiled from home. They cross paths. “Took you 5 whole minutes to pack us up and leave me… with all this love out here in the hall.” So his pov: with no home or town (her) what is he defending now? Her pov: why are you glaring at me, looking like you’re ready to punch my date; I’m not your problem anymore so who am I offending now?
“2nd, 3rd, and hundredth chances” (we tried to make this work for a very long time)
“You gave no warning signs” “I gave sooo many signs” (total disconnect for whatever reasons)
Him: “You didn’t even hear me out” Her: “you never learned to read my mind”(understand her)
May or may not be right but makes me think she was “dying, not seen” in the relationship but he couldn’t or didn’t really see it so he’s still processing the whole breakup but she’s already gone emotionally. Ready to move on.
Him: “so step right out, there’s no amount of crying I can do for you” (go ahead then, just leave, I get it, we’re done) but you never gave any signs and you never heard me out.
The song doesn’t take sides but perfectly expresses the pain & heartache on both sides. And then just stops because there’s no resolution.

This is one of my favorites because I feel like I had this conversation with my hubby. We were only seeing things from our own perspectives not from the others we were not “seeing” or “hearing” each other. So close to it being the end. This song is now a reminder of where it can go if we do not communicate when we start to feel unheard/seen.

    • @HPReact
      @HPReact  11 месяцев назад +10

Very nicely put! We both are aware of the importance of communication in a healthy relationship. It’s a great way to hear each other.
If you both really express your love for each other on a daily basis, you’ll see a positive change in your relationship. Listen to positive music together , it’s a great feeling to connect!
It works for me! And our love has grown exponentially since we began expressing our feelings for each other daily. In my case almost hourly! Lol 😂 !
      Thanks,
      Sam

Taylor wrote a song (w/ bf Calvin Harris --- This is What You Came For) in 2016 under a pseudonym, Nils Sjöberg, in order to deflect comment away from their relationship and let the song stand on its own. (They had a messy breakup a few months later). Joe Alwyn was her boyfriend afterward, from 2016 to 2023; most of the love songs from Reputation, Lover, folklore, Evermore, and Midnights involve him in some way. Joe Alwyn's grandfather was a classical music composer; he is a character actor with musical talent. Until the lockdown, when "work at home" became a thing, they hadn't set out to write songs together. Alwyn's grandfather was named William; their first date, or a place they stayed, was the Bowery Hotel in NYC. Hence, William Bowery.

re: Bon Iver. Justin Vernon lives in WI, which has a border with Canada (bilingual English/French). So, bon Jour (hello, good day), bon Voyage (have a nice trip), bon Soir (good evening; see also soiree). "Hiver" is French for "winter." Unlike SoCal, it gets COLD in winter in Wisconsin. I doubt anyone ever actually says, have a nice winter, even in Canada. Dessner's studio is in upstate NY in the Hudson valley; Aaron's home is next to the studio. Aaron, Jack and Taylor quarantined for a couple weeks prior to shooting (separately!). Justin either couldn't isolate, or couldn't come to NY. He's filming in the daytime (look out the windows); she's filming at night with the patio lights shining through the window. I expect Aaron and Taylor did the post production and mixing, should be in the film credits.

The singer with the the blue bandanna with birds on it signifies Taylor’s relationship with Harry Styles. Interestingly, Harry about the time Folklore was about to come out stated that some really nice music was about to come out. And he was wearing a colorful Cardigan sweater which Taylor features prominently in one of her songs, Cardigan. Plus Harry and Taylor have a song called Daylight and Carolina on their separate albums. Harry’s color theme for his last Tour was the same as Taylor’s Loverfest Tour that she had to cancel altogether due to the Pandemic. Also they both sing about being Golden.

All the songs on folklore and evermore are somewhat fictional. Or at least not necessarily about Taylor herself.
As a fun way to spend time together Taylor suggested she and Joe write an album, because they both love to play piano, sing, and write. Although he is an actor not a musician.
Many people believe many of these songs are Taylor and joe writing songs to some of their near breakups but didn’t want them know that way, so they changed key details to make themselves into characters.
The songs cardigan, august, and Betty are a teenage live triangle. It was all started by Joe who’d started singing the lyrics to Betty while she was in the other room, as he was making it up.
Some people believe this is a love triangle Taylor and joe lived through, but wrote it in third person. But that is just speculation.
You should listen to the king pond in order, it will help make sense of all this 🤣
Evermore came about because after folklore was submitted they all just kept writing music and it turned into a sister album. It’s also in this “fictional character” theme. But the last great American dynasty is about rebaka harkness, the house Taylor owns on watch hill, used to be owned by her.

But I will offer one hint, for whatever it may be worth: Some of your confusions stemmed from your talking over the video, rather than pausing to talk. (For example, you both missed the caption explaining that Justin was in Wisconsin, etc.) My general suggestion for future reactions would be to minimize talking over the top of a video. Pause before talking and, in some cases, rewind/replay parts, if necessary. Sometimes the subtleties and nuances are practically "iconic" in the minds of swifties so, if you miss something because you are talking over the top of it, swifties will tend to get annoyed. Most swifties are incredibly fun and kind, but some are notoriously fanatical. Just sayin'. 😉😁

@@HPReact Just an FYI that has occurred to me: swifties are a notoriously devoted and somewhat peculiar fan base, and I have a theory about that. Taylor suffers from more than an average amount of hate from some parts of society. The “Taylor-haters” insist that she is overrated, she lacks talent, she’s just a marketing machine who cranks out the musical equivalent of “junk food”, and so on, etc, etc… endlessly. (You can find these angry types of assertions in the comments sections of virtually any news article that mentions Taylor.)
These “attacks on their queen” are so outrageously persistent and intense that they trigger a lot of emotions for a lot of swifties who feel personally attacked. There are various theories (like, literally, empirical theories based on data and logical analysis) proposed by academics and assorted people who spend their lives tracking social trends, celebrity culture, etc. trying to explain why Taylor, in particular, is a magnet for these types of attacks. Obviously, part of it is simply because she’s on top and some people don’t like anyone who is on top, but most people agree that there is more to it than that (misogyny and politics are often mentioned). Anyway, all I’m trying to say here is that the incessant attacks against Taylor tend to put swifites in a defensive frame of mind when they are on the internet. This frame of mind can make some swifties hard to deal with and those swifites can give the entire fanbase a bad - or at least quirky - reputation.

Scrolling the comments there seems to be a few negative Nellie's afoot. Don't be discouraged, it's not easy to decode Taylor's lyrics and especially catching all the Easter eggs (clues or nods to past or future work). It takes months, if not years to be a real Swiftie sleuth. Some people get bent about reactors not catching every word and nuance but I don't see them out there posting their own reactions or reviews.
Anyhow, as others explained, Joe (Alwyn) = William Bowery. And Justin Vernon = Bon Iver (French pronunciation E-vehr). If there's any song of his that you'd recognize, it's probably Skinny Love. Overall, his own style is an alt-folk or indie-folk vibe, I'd say.
After Exile, Justin also did a duet with Taylor called Evermore, the title track for the album released right after Folklore. They are sister albums, which Taylor explained by indicating that they (her and Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, and Joe Alwyn with Taylor separately) just kept writing and before they knew it, she had enough songs for that second album. They were released just 4 months apart (August 2020 and December 2020). Those two albums in particular got a lot of us through the darkest days of the pandemic and it's where I personally got really hooked on Taylor.
Jack was in the group fun and currently in the band Bleachers. Aaron is in The National. The studio they're recording the video in is in Hudson, NY and is owned by Aaron. And as mentioned below, Justin was filming from his home studio in Wisconsin. The album version of the song is cleaner (no masks)

OMG. PLEASE TELL ME THAT YOU DID NOT JUST CRITICIZE JUSTIN VERNON’S LOWER REGISTER???
To hear him say Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) was singing too low for him was like a SHARP DAGGER to my heart. I LOVE the way he sounds. It’s so pure and beautiful. This talented man has such a wide and wonderful range. He’s naturally very low, which is why Taylor was so excited to work with him. His voice is pure and easy. Like he’s not trying to get too low for him. 😫🙈💔
You are literally the first and only person who has negatively criticized Justin that I’ve seen. I’ve seen well over 30 reactions to this and literally everyone but you has been completely mesmerized by him; especially when he starts ad-libbing the “ooooh-ooohhhh...”; it’s just delivered so BEAUTIFULLY AND HEARTBREAKING. I am actually beside myself. This is my favorite song on the album and you just made it seem like it’s not as good as it truly is. That was pretty awful to hear!!
This was during Covid and there was a large filming crew in the studio with Justin. The fact that he wore a mask and still sounds absolutely amazing is a true testament to his natural talent.
Taylor Swift was in a 6 year relationship with Joe Alwyn. You’ll hear her reference (2,160 days in one of her songs. That’s 6 years). They wrote quite a few great songs together, but Joe didn’t want to take away from the beauty of the song because it was her boyfriend, he used a name “William Bowery”. Not many people figured it out until years later. They actually split up around 2021, but either kept trying until March 2023, or that’s when they decided to tell everyone. All of Taylor’s friends immediately unfollowed Joe, even though the two were good friends with both Taylor and Joe. Ryan Reynold and his wife Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, Hugh Jackman, Emma Stone, Gigi Hadid, he was ex-communicated from the group. It has never been revealed WHY Taylor and Joe broke up, but this album was written during Covid, which would have been around the same time that they were having difficulties. A lot of songs on this album are fictional, but I believe this one has some significance. Never seen anything to give that theory light of day, but it fits.
Taylor wrote 2 albums during Covid. Writing is her therapy. So she was really going through a lot of things to make 2 full albums while the studios were closed. Evermore and Folklore. Taylor only has a handful of songs where she fully sings with other artists. She’s also been a ghostwriter on a few songs but I just can’t think of the name she used. It’s on a Tombstone in the “Look What You Made Me Do Video”. Taylor has a tombstone for her reputation so she added that little detail to be thorough.
I really hope that you rewatch this video.

It was recorded during Covid hence the face covering for Justin

Not a covid thing. Apparently, a few years back Justin decided his face wasn't for public consumption. He wanted to keep some of himself for his actual friends and family. So he began covering his face when he performs.

Sometimes I think you're not paying attention. It said on the screen that due to the pandemic, Justin Vernon was in Wisconsin. There was a film crew in his house, so he was masking. And you're not hearing the lyrics. She is with another man. "I can see you staring, honey. Like he's just your understudy. Like you'd get your knuckles bloody for me." I don't know what you're listening to. And Sam, Justin is struggling to go that low? Seriously? One last thing, they are not RECORDING so it's not COUNTERINTUITIVE. It's a live performance, and we can hear him just fine. It would be nice if you guys really reacted instead of just acting confused about everything. Look it up on Genius and see what it's about. I'll be unsubscribing.

Seriously, you just insinuated that Justin can’t sing the lower register, that it sounds off. 🤨 Credibility toasted.
