    I love this song, for the same reason she made it. The snake turning into butterflies is her turning from the Reputation album and the dark themes to the Lover album and all the colors (including a node to the LGBTQ rainbow) and her being in a good mood and in love after being almost cancelled by Kanye and the Kardishans. Watch the documentary Miss Americana she explains in it the concept of the video (all the things we love that make you and make me, she tells the co-vocalist). It’s FUN. When you want a fun song while driving, cleaning, or just to be silly and have positive vibes - it’s the perfect song. I think people who don’t like it are the ones who loved the Reputation album and wanted more dark Taylor 😂 they don’t know how to do happy lol

    You guys might like the decoding videos that pop up after she has a new music video.
    I've heard some reactors and seen comments from people who don't like ME! Their reasons mostly boil down to disappointment because they are huge fans of Reputation, wanted Taylor to have a chip on her shoulder and write big heavy songs aimed at her critics . It is stupid. This song is important to _Taylor_ . I know that because 1) it was the first single, with a music video. 2) it was a rare collaboration, this time with Brendon Urie; 3) it is showcased in her Miss Americana documentary both in the studio and on set for the video; 4) She did several live performances of the song before the album was out; 5) Taylor had some really bad days during her pre - Reputation period of isolation, and the song is about loving yourself. It is a mental health reminder.
    The song is also a reminder from Taylor that music is supposed to be fun. One of the main things people say about it is it is a children's song, or "too Disney" ---- while not acknowledging that Taylor was a huge Disney fan as a child, and that several of her songs over the years were put on albums because of her sense of humor (Stay Stay Stay: "it's so fun! giggle"). Personally, I love this song; the video is amazing. It was a song she wrote with Joel Little; maybe one of the first for the new album. It is like the people who dismiss Shake It Off as bubblegum; they didn't get it. Have fun, get rid of the stress, enjoy yourself. And the rainbows are an Easter Egg for the next single, YNTCD, an LGBTQ+ anthem released on Donald J Trump's BIRTHDAY. I've never felt angry about the existence of people who are different from me. Also, my mother died (of old age, and cancer) a few months before I heard this album. If you haven't listened to it, listen to Soon You'll Get Better. (also, for another song showcasing her humor: the opening track is "I Forgot That You Existed" (the quotes are part of the title, lol).

    I like this song. People just hate extremely happy songs after Reputation being so dark.
    Also, the other song I know people hate is It’s Nice to Have a Friend. I don’t mind it. I know some don’t know that song was mostly written by a children’s music school and their teacher and asked her to write lyrics and didn’t go to deep on them because well it’s for the kids education. Also, she has it where all the sales and royalties from the song goes to that school. So I kinda get mad when people speak so poorly about it when it has a bigger purpose than just a song on the album when it’s for kids music education.

    I love this song and video, not just because it’s fun and the video is amazing but even more for why it was written. In the Miss Americana documentary there’s so much great material about who she is, what she’s been through and what influences her songwriting. The film ends with both the Reputation tour and her recording of Lover and there’s a section on this song and her ideas for the video. I think people forget because the music was so good how dark a time in her life the year before Reputation was and how that influenced the album. Yes she found love and had a mega hit album but she also had to constantly live with that dark time and its image, the snake, for a long time. When she was writing Me she wanted something fun to metaphorically cleanse her palate for a new era (she’s all about eras). She wanted the snakes to become butterflies, she choose Brandon Urie (perfect I thought) who’s all about fun. She was happy, in love and wanted the first song of a great but unfortunately underrated by a lot of fans, album. She specifically mentions she wanted rainbows, unicorns, bright colours and over the top pop fun so there would be no doubt she had moved on to a much happier place. Her music always reflects her life which is a very important part of what makes her great. Yes unhappiness, sadness & feeling hated produced a great bounce back “in your face haters” album but she wouldn’t be human if there wasn’t a cost to that. If it didn’t always remind her of where that music came from, just like any trauma any of us have faced. She wanted to wipe the slate clean and reset, Reputation videos were amazing and over the top as well, just in a very dark palate. She wanted bright, happy and to create a new era free of the snake where colour and joy existed. I don’t think she could have made a better choice for that reset and she wouldn’t be the Taylor we love if she didn’t go all out doing it. She also still had some subtle fun in the lyrics with the media’s perception of her being dramatic or critical about her love life and basically said “you think I’m over the top, well I might as well have fun with it and be more out there then you can imagine”.
    Lover has so many amazing songs. Being happy didn’t make her less brilliant it just has for the most part a more positive outlook. No matter where that relationship ended I loved happy Taylor, it produced some incredible songs and one not happy but incredibly beautiful masterpiece that is so true and heartfelt I still tear up every time I listen to it. For good reason Taylor never made a video for this song and doesn’t perform it live except once during COVID for charity and because she knew how many people were feeling that specific type of emotion during those terrible days. I would love to see you react to Soon You’ll Get Better, the song she wrote about how she was feeling when her mother was battling cancer for the second time. I challenge anyone who’s ever lost a loved one or been with them through a battle with not just cancer but any disease (Covid, etc) to make it through this song without tears flowing. For me it was also my mom and we lost her, it was 2011 but listening to this song still brings it back and heals through the connection and understanding of this perfect in its emotional truth song. The Chicks add a beautiful layer on the harmonies and with the instrumentation and I love that she subtly thanked them & nodded to this song with the inclusion of a picture of The Chicks among a wall full of pictures of actual chicks to punctuate the “there’s a lot of cool chicks out there” line in the Me video (their picture is prominently shown over Brandon’s right shoulder when they cut back to the apartment.
    Sorry for the novel but I have a lot of strong feelings about how important and amazing Lover is and this song (link below) will never stop filling my heart. Soon You’ll Get Better - ruclips.net/video/2P-uLAQ9FCI/видео.htmlsi=wZCuUNdKd-_2bilA
    PS. You really need to react to Miss Americana (Netflix), its key to understanding the real Taylor and what shaped the woman she’s become.

    I love the "ME!" song and the video. There will always be people who can't or won't see the fun in things that are meant to be fun. The beauty of Taylor's career is that she makes different types of music and in many genres. Some want to put her into specific boxes that they created for her. There will always be snobs who can't just enjoy things for what they are intended to be. Thanks for the reaction.

    I love her for doing these types of things and not taking herself so seriously all the time. Sometimes it's about having fun, not all the songs have to be deep and emotional. She said she wanted to put everything that she liked and defined her in an overwhelming music video (it's on purpose), it's very sad people claim to hate it.

  • @texasseastar
    @texasseastar 6 месяцев назад +5

    For me the song ME and video has very similar vibes to You Need to Calm Down, which they reference in the beginning French part of this. YNTCD has a different director, but Taylor always has clear ideas about the look and feel of her videos, so that is the common thread even when she's working with different production crews. I don't recall if you've watched that video yet, but it would be a good next song. On that one you may want to look up the list of cameos after you watch the video and then re-watch it. The ME! video is a technicolor explosion and it's awesome, but I have to say that the song itself isn't one I have on repeat. If there was a stripped down acoustic version (maybe there is??), I would definitely be more interested in that.
    As far as production of music videos goes, Taylor seemingly has massive budgets for all of her music videos and I've never seen a bad one in the mix. The ones that most newbies really like are ones where she worked with Joseph Khan. He won a Grammy for the Bad Blood mv. He also produced directed Blank Space, Wildest Dreams, Out of the Woods, ...Ready For It?, Look What You Made Me Do, End Game, and Delicate. Thanks to Wikipedia, I think that's all of them. He's worked with lots of other artists as well. In recent years, she has started taking on that producing & directing role herself without sacrificing the concepts or quality of the videos.
    On the ME mv Taylor worked with Dave Meyers, who has also worked with a bunch of other A-list artists including Taylor's good friends Selena and Ed Sheeran.

    Usually, if someone doesn't like a Taylor song, they haven't fathomed it yet. I don't mean they don't understand it... I mean they are not able to place themselves in that situation and realize holy cow there's a song that perfectly describes what I'm feeling. You should react to the Grammy museum. She talks about how she wrote and produced 1989 album. Then she performs a few songs live just her and her instruments. It would really help to gain more of an insight of her as a musician.
    Or even something off speak now album. She got lots of hate when she was younger and people said she didn’t write her own music. So when she was 18/19 she ended up writing an entire album with ZERO co writers just to prove a point ❤ (but if you react to anything before reputation make sure it’s Taylor’s version we don’t want to support scooter Braun lol)

    Lots of nods to many classic films. Sidenote- she bought, restored & got landmark status for the Goldwyn estate (G of MGM studios) - also her brother studied film and handles her sync licenses to tv/film.
    Actress Grace Kelly (who learned french in school & moved to a country that spoke French) was from Philadelphia (which is the closest major city that TS grew up). I wonder if her grandparents were an influence with this exposure. She has always been interested in history, museums & vintage shopping - her producer & her bonded over Kennedy history.
    At one point she met JFK's brother's widow- and dated the grandson- she was mentioned in a Kennedy memoir. She references literature & history in her music- roaring 20s, 1950s, 90s trends, etc. Basically her music is a time capsule of pop culture from her viewpoint/interpretation.

    It is objectively a good song and video. Ifffff it was from a Taylor Swift who entirely disengaged her brain and entered a candy pop trance. I think the perceived “dumbing down” is what most fans object to. If Katy Perry had released the same thing I’d expect it to go with a lot lighter criticism because completely mindless pop songs are her bag.

    I think this song was a shocker for fans and caught some immediate flack because this and you need to calm down were the singles released for this album (Taylor is notorious for picking bad singles) and the transition from Reputation (the previous album) to this was JARRING.
    People were so annoyed by the “hey kids, spelling is fun” that Taylor actually cut it from the album version of the song. Which is sad because if you saw her perform it live she changed it to match the situation “hey kids, tonight is my birthday!” (iheart jingle ball) “Hey kids, Vegas is fun!” (Billboard music awards) She had a vision for it, but basically got bullied out of playing it, which is kind sad. She’s been on record of saying it was a tonal decision that was made in the studio because she wanted it to not take itself too seriously and want it to read that way.
    This and the scale change in the Anti-Hero music video are both fan triggered changes she has made since her move from Big Machine (and thus having more control over changes like this). The only other changes I can remember in her discography are insensitive lyrics from early albums. Picture to Burn being done while still at Big Machine and Better than Revenge being done on the re-record. I wouldn’t put those two changes in the same category as the two previous ones though.

    Thanks for appreciating this song! Is it her best? No, but like you said it’s a lot of fun (especially singing along to it in your car) and if you’ve seen her „miss Americana“ documentary you also know that she had so much fun writing it. It’s about self-love and always changes my mood for the better when I listen to it. I don’t see how there could be anything wrong with a song like that.

    I don't know why people hate on ME! so much. It's from the lover album which is more fun and light and upbeat so it fits with the vibe of the album.
    Personally I like that Taylor has so many different styles of songs so there is one that fits every occasion. Sometimes I just want to listen to pop songs that make me happy, and this one definitely makes me happy.

  • @yezzN02
    @yezzN02 6 месяцев назад +2

    I love ME! This one comes on her 7th album, so this far in Taylor has more than proven she can write deep lyrics, with that knowledge it should be safe to assume she wanted this song to be just this: fun and lighthearted.
    I also love that while the song is called ME! It not self centered, but does also say "you're the only one of you, that's the fun of you." With so many high standards in society, it's nice to celebrate everyone and what makes them unique. She did say in the recording studio (shown in Miss Americana) that she wanted kids to happily sing the chorus "me he he, I'm the only one of me."
    And while I prefer her sad songs, there are just too happy days when I do not want to listen to This is Me Trying, Tolerate It, etc etc...
    I'm glad you had fun with this one, comment to you on the next one, guys! ✌🏼😊

    I don't know if you guys would ever consider reacting to Taylor's movies but, if so, I would suggest Miss Americana and the Eras Tour movies as highest priorities.
    Also, although you've seen several clips from The Long Pond Sessions, the whole movies is great and you'd hear some songs you've never heard before. The same could be said for the Reputation Stadium Tour (although I don't know how to see that, at the moment) and the 1989 World Tour (which is available for free on RUclips).
    And, finally, if you're curious about her early days, you might like her Fearless Tour and Speak Now tours from ages ago. In any case, there is one performance in particular from the Speak Now Tour that you really ought to see for it's over-the-top melodramatic fun:

    To be perfectly honest I LOVE this song. I guess I get the hate because is WAY bubblegummy pop... BUT still, it is an amazing song and the message is also great. so I don't know what to tell ya'... everyone is entitled to their opinion...
    also per HER own words, this video was to show "everything that makes her, her" meaning "If you were to open her head up THIS is what would come out." it is all explained in Miss America when they recorded this song. and you can see her GENUINE joy at the idea not just of the song but ALSO of the video she WAS extremely excited.
    to answer your question this was the first single from "Lover" and as per usual there are some easter eggs (clues... a Taylor and Swifties tradition thing) that tell us more about the album or possible things to come... in this case when the video came out I believe no one knew the title of the album... so in a scene (on the roof, with the unicorn) you actually see the name of the album. The French-speaking was another clue regarding a small concert that was held IN Paris for the Lover album "The City of Lover...live from Paris)... it was meant to be the kick-off to the tour (I think) before COVID and everything got canceled after so that is the only show (as a concert) of that era. also, there was a picture on the wall of *The Chicks* because they had a collab in the album with a song.

    So the backstory is that Taylor really wanted the video be over the top… and the lyrics and tune to be something that kids wanted to sing and feel good about themselves (her merch said “Can’t spell Awesome without ME”). I hate that people hate it- they didn’t get what her goal was which was fun, appealing for kids (hinting at Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz, etc). When she explains what her vision is to Brendan in the Miss Americana documentary it is clear what she was going for. I love that she wanted to lift up kids who she saw getting depressed online due to bullying, feeling invisible, etc.

    This is a great cheery song. People think that things have to be edgy and deep to be good. They are wrong.
    In the Making Of video she tells someone that that she wants the video to look like what she sees in her head.

      TBH I liked most of Lover, and I'd adored Reputation. It was just jarring, I'd expected better single-picking with the new label, and the lyrics on this one are so... shallow, it was a real shock to the system. If it'd been a ballad with shallow lyrics I'd have been just as upset, it's not the upbeat nature that threw me. It's a skip for me, my kids like it, and that's fine! I definitely like other peppy poppy songs by her tho!

    Best Taylor quote: "I think for ME!" 🤣🤣🤣
    ME! isn't my favorite, but it doesn't deserve all the hate. It has a nice positive uplifting message and very catchy repetitive hook, but who am I to judge. Might be adressed to younger generations. The visuals are just stunning. Taylors MVs are always a beautiful extension of her lyrics and her vision. I feel like she cares more about the quality of her art than budget or profit. Remembering the Bad Blood MV, when she spent like 13 mio to have all her friends have cameos and much fun on set.
    I mean its business with fun and perfection combined. I have no idea how she does that, but I love her so much for it❤❤❤

    I think that the biggest criticism towards ME! is the lyrics. The video is really high budget and well done. But Taylor is known for being a brilliant storyteller. When you have a song that is a fan favorite like All Too Well, which is an amazing story in song format, or songs like Peace, This Is Me Trying or older ones like Dear John or The Moment I knew, or recent ones like No Body No Crime, she writes sooooo well that it's odd when in this song the chorus is: Me he he, ho ho hoooo, I'm the only one of me... And the bridge (she is famous for writing the best bridges) in ME! the bridge is: Hey kids, spelling is fun!... Like, People didn't receive the lyrics very well. I love how fun the song is and on Miss Americana we can see a part of the song creation and Taylor was so happy writing it that it makes me feel bad that most people don't like the lyrics. But, it's like you guys said, her "low bar" is still good in comparison to many pop songs out there.

    • @Pathfinder197
      @Pathfinder197 6 месяцев назад +3

      If Swifties somehow genuinely worried that this was suddenly going to become the new norm in her songwriting then I get the reaction - that’s the only way to take the reception it got from Swifties as anything other than an embarrassing overreaction. But how did anyone ever hear that “hey kids, spelling is fun!!!” bridge and not see how tongue in cheek this was?
      Brilliant, over the top (in a great way) MV. Love that the argument’s in French (“je suis calm!!!”). If people had seen it as a fun technicolor little side quest - and perhaps a happy, sly little jab at folks (media, Grammy voters) who would take years to properly appreciate Reputation - I feel like the reception would’ve been very different.

    • @darsynia
      @darsynia 6 месяцев назад

      This is a great explanation of the issues! I think my biggest problem as a fan of hers was that this was the first single from her new label, and I'd been so, so hoping that the singles chosen would have more meat to them. 'There's a lot of lame chicks out there' is just NOT what I wanted. At all. FWIW I hate the 'sometimes I feel like everybody is a sexy baby' line too, so I'm at least a consistent curmudgeon (but I love Anti-Hero and we all have lyrics that aren't faves!)
