Wesley's father not involving himself crimes against children doesn't make him morally virtuous, he just didn't care and let it the crimes happen anyway without him. He still r a p e d and m u r d e r e d without remorse, as well as orchestrated events to unleash possibly the most evil supervillian in his world's history. Thankfully, everything that Wesley and the Fraternity managed to get away with would eventually come back to bite them all in Big Game.

The movie did actually explain why those assassins put so much trust in that 'loom of faith'. Fox (Angelina Jolie) told Wesley (James McAvoy) that she once refused to kill a target, but at a later point in time that target killed a lot of people (which would have been prevented if the target was killed). (It's also possible that Sloan (Morgan Freeman) said that, I don't remember all the details.)

Instead, that'll just be a case of the greatest superheroes somehow, through a large leap in Logic or shitty writing, became villains themselves.

I actually liked the movie better. I really didn't like any characters in this entire comic series. They should do a sequel of a surviving hero 'going rogue' from the values of heroes and instead goes "Punisher" with the goal of killing the entire super villian population in brutally fun brilliant sneaky fashion with Wesley being the final mark of The Five. It could be called "Rogue", the sequel to "Wanted".

Lol, that is a great way to put it. Of course it's also a studio too embarrassed by the concept of Comic Book Super Villians ruling a secret sociaty (the movie came out before the MCU was in full swing mind you) so they felt the need to "elevate it" with boring ass mundinity. Seriously, how would they be embarrassed by a secret sociaty of comic book supervillians and then turn around and present a magical weave as the reason these assasins kill people?

Maybe they didn’t want to take a risk of making an edgy superhero themed movie that wasn’t even tied to marvel or dc. Don’t know if there were examples of movies like that working before kick ass that released 2 years later. I read somewhere that the curving bullet thing wasn’t in the original blueprint of the movie they put it in because Angelina Jolie said she wouldnt do the movie if they didn’t have a scene of her killing like 8 dudes and then herself with a single bullet.

I like the fact that Millar does not get involve in the productions based on his work. I am a big fan of creative licensing when stories travel across different media. I have to say that both the Wanted movie and the Jupiter tv show are actually interesting and good, standing on their own. They concentrate on lore and storytelling and adapt something fun for Hollywood and interesting for tv. The best part for me is that instead of having 2 stories, I got 4. Is like expecting a 2 dollar return off a 1-dollar investment and getting 4 dollars instead, absolutely loving it. I wish someone did Star Wars the same way.

I love how you break these stories down. I agree that the "casual" mentions of rape and extreme violence are disturbing. But I think they are meant to be disturbing. This is a story of villains, unhinged and unchecked - likely what would happen in any world with "super powered" villains. There are no heroes here - just villains in power having a major power shift. With this in mind - I think most of the story still holds up 16 years later. Still didn't appreciate the ending, but I understand where Millar was coming from with essentially holding up a mirror to the reader for "enjoying" or "participating" in this orgy of violence... in my opinion, some things shouldn't be adapted one to one from the source material. just because a movie or show isn't exactly like the source material doesn't make it worse, as long as the changes service the story or fix things that are not that good or frankly stupid in the original. and in my opinion, the movie is better than the comic.

    • @sparda9060
      @sparda9060 19 дней назад

it does make it worse. if the movie only going to use 1% of the source material, might as well make the movie its own fvcking IP instead of borrowing source material's name to get people to watch it, which is dumb. The movie would stand on its own better if it never did borrow the Wanted name and went with an original IP but noped... Borrows 2 scenes from the comics and using character's names and throwing out the rest I would not consider it an adaptation.

34:16 => That shot of Wesley falling with his back to the looming ground and him shooting towards the sky at superheroes flying towards him. This to me is one of the GREATEST moment in sequential superhero art. You can feel the air as he is dropping and bullets zooming up into the sky hitting heroes left and right. That shot alone would make a movie whether it be superheroes or a spy thriller. But being that it is superhero makes all that damn more special.

I want to mention how spot on “The Killers” response was to an ambush. Being a Marine for 8 years and a combat vet kinda makes this my area of specialty. So when pro finds himself in an ambush situation they have been conditioned to not react by hitting the ground or hiding, since that is the kill zone. Instead we are taught to quickly “take the fight to them” or simply walk and shoot to the enemy. So while jumping out a high rise is not good physics it was awesome to see a writer who knew how a pro reacts to something. Sorry if I came off as preachy, but it just is very refreshing.

It would be interesting to see a faithful TV series made out of this. The first season could follow the original comic book series faithfully, the second season could deal with an interesting story concerning superheroes somehow regaining knowledge of their past lives, as well as normal humans that have been wronged by the Fraternity seeking vengeance against it's members and members of the Fraternity, including Fox and Wesley Gibson having to face the consequences of their evil crimes.

So when I first started watching this video, I thought that they'd maybe taken some liberties when making the film, which I kind of liked. It's been a while since I've seen it, so it might not have aged well, and I might change my opinion on it. But to hear that not even curving bullets wasn't in the comics is.... odd, and to find out that it was an original idea for the film is actually kind of interesting.
I think the concept is also interesting and feels very similar to 'The Boys', perhaps the opposite due to 'The Boys' being about a world where only Superheros exist and 'Wanted' being where Villains only existed and when watching this video there were moments where I thought "That's pretty cool" I didn't mind the bullet-time parts as it kind of showed that Wesley and his father perhaps has some kind of power, reminded me of the Winter Soldier a little.
However, there were moments where I thought, "Yeah, this wouldn't be made today," and "I think I understand why they changed so much" even in the 2000s when things were pretty chill at least in terms of media entertainment. Then again, we do have 'The Boys' show, which was considered to be impossible to make into a show or film and has ended up being a well liked show, so maybe 'Wanted' (the true version) might be made, though I could still see a lot of things being taken out of it.
Overall, it was pretty interesting to watch this video on the true 'Wanted'. I honestly don't know if to even say the comics and the film are even the same thing. Still, it was fun to watch.

Though I want to thank you because I like all these books your covering as they don’t get much outlets that discuss all these controversial situations, and not going to lie I was dying of laughter at the end lol!

  • @foolwriter

Great video, as always. But allow me to humbly offer a little extra context from an older comics nerd. Millar using character "homages" is kind of a thing for him. He started his run on The Authority by introducing a villain team that were direct reflections of The Avengers. Here in Wanted, half the fun is spotting the clearly intentional Marvel/DC supervillain analogues. You mentioned some of them, but also consider The Killer=Deathstroke/Bullseye; Sucker=Venom/Parasite; Professor Solomon Seltzer=Lex Luthor/Dr. Sivana; Mr. Rictus=The Joker; Adam One=Vandal Savage; The Future=The Red Skull (with maybe a little Kang the Conqueror); The Emperor=The Mandarin; Brain-Box=Brainiac... and the list goes on with visual gags like Mr. Freeze and Ghost Rider. You can almost hear the slightly stoner conversation that inspired it, "yeah, but, like, what if the bad guys won? What if they wiped the supes out?" "Nah, Marvel and DC'd never do that." "Well, THEY wouldn't."
It's a trope Millar's returned to since. in Jupiter's Legacy/Circle, the generations almost line up to DC and the younger kids to Marvel, but that's a little more tenuous. Then there's Nemesis, which is pretty much "what if Batman were, like, a BAD guy?" And you thought Wesley got up to some heinous s***....
