- I went head to head with Kate Smurthwaite on GB News to debate freedom of speech in comedy. I think restricting, censoring or cancelling comedians is pointless as we're performing in front of an audience so are constantly self censoring to make sure we don't offend anyone. Well, make sure we don't offend too many people. Some people deserve to be offended.

@Shadow Of Wiggin ive met her quite a few times at the Edinburgh comedy festival. This is 10 years ago, she certainly didn't seem like such an a***hole back then. I thunk an woefully unsuccessful stand up career made her bitter, she believes she is funny so it must be everybody else who is wrong.

I loved her women’s football argument: when there were no men around, during the War, women’s football was popular. Then, after the war, it was suppressed by men’s football. That’s like saying, during the early hours of the morning, when everyone is asleep, paid advertising was popular. Then,in the morning, it was suppressed by regular tv programs.

A true comedian knows how to push your buttons and then laughs at you as he succeeds, If she was any kind of comedian she would have went along with his gags and not lost her shit like the dumb ass she was. Activist pretending to be comedians are never funny, they don't tell jokes they preach a message and no one goes to a comedy club to be preached at.
Leo did a stellar job here, witty, pithy and able to get his points across quickly (more impressively before Kate started to shout loudly, indignantly and at incoherent length about "needing a conversation" closely followed by a mumbling of "but you are best not included in said conversation").
If you don't like a type of entertainment then don't go to the venue it's showing at the booked time, attempting to deny both the entertainer and an aware adult audiences ability to participate in and enjoy shared entertainment in an otherwise private/invite-only/paid-access venue simply shows what an insufferable shriek you are when it comes to accepting the humanity of others in good faith.
this isn't even about rights, it's about a small cabal of busybodies realising they can have disproportionate power over (cowardly) venues who never learned the difference between finger wagging better-than-thou malcontents and a legitimate audience complaint in regards to plainly advertised events.

I’ve never once been offended by Roy Chubby Brown because I don’t watch him , it’s easy enough . Why can’t she understand such a basic principle as going to see those who we find funny and not going to see those we don’t . Only a masochist would want to sit and hear someone who offends them , or who desperately wants to be a self righteous “ victim” .
The problem is though , so many of the supposed alternative comedians of the 80s who are now the old guard , were the exact same towards people like Bernard Manning or Jim Davidson , neither of whom I found funny but who were attacked by them with exactly the same charges she is making now .but at least they are funny .

I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that the FA started women's football during WW2, but were then pissed off because it was popular.

She avoided the issue, which is that BBC comedy has become woke, and free of humour. The audiences clap in approval of the political message. “Yes comrade, we approve, that was good.” And by God she interrupted Kearse early on, then had a foot stomping tantrum when he interrupted her. Why does a comedian need to be progressive and enlightening when they just need to be funny? And if women's football is so wonderful, why is it always played in stadiums that are always 99% empty? Why was she invited onto a debate concerning comedy? The comments on her recent videos are disabled on her RUclips page, but the earlier ones allow comment. They are 95% negative/incredulous/hostile. When she says if woke people judge comedy she's due her own series she is 100% lying. She's not a comedian. A ranting harridan who can only dream of playing to crowds. Literally comes across as mad.

What they say about 'there is no such thing as bad publicity' is true. No matter how bad you look as long as you're given a platform that's large enough, you'll find a niche of people who like you.
Ironically enough, this is what's in the heart of this debate. All Leo and other advocates of free speech want, is to be able to be platformed so they could find their niche. And she argues that this should not be the case.

I think the issue LK and others have is not the fact that people complain , but that the minority wokeists are so toxic and manage get so much stuff cancelled because they don't like it.

Leo, Kate Whatshernamethwaite said that it is only now that we have gay comedy. You asked her to provide an example joke. She didn’t. However, I grew up in post war Britain in the 50s when we listened to “Beyond Our Ken” and the 60s when we listened to “Round the Horne” both featuring Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddock as Jules and Sandy - both gay characters making gay comedy. Off the top of my head in late 60s and the 70s we had the gay comedy of Frankie Howard, Larry Grayson, John Inman. These are just some of the giants on whose shoulders today’s gay comedians stand. Kate Whateverhernameisthwaite might like to do some research into her chosen subject instead of lesbian dance theory.
