- I was invited onto Good Morning Britain this morning to debate cancel culture following Davina McCall's suggestion that people shouldn't be cancelled over old tweets if they've grown and changed.
This was reported in the Sun as "Leo Kearse claims women in burkas ‘do look like letterboxes’". Watch the video and make up your own mind!
The burka is a symbol of patriarchal oppression. As a misogynist, I think this is great - but even I think that patriarchal symbols can be mocked.
Also, why is it a sackable offence to say burkas look a bit like letterboxes, but absolutely fine to describe middle aged white men as "gammons"? If one is racist, then both obviously are.
Britain is an incredibly diverse, warm and tolerant country. I wish people would stop castigating Britain and its aboriginal inhabitants.

Absolutely. My surname is mispronounced by people all the time as its pretty unusual but I don't get bent out of shape if someone gets it wrong. Depending on the situation I will either correct them and joke around about it being mispronounced to make sure they don't feel awkward or just ignore it and let the situation carry on uninterrupted.
I would never embarrass someone who was good enough to host me on their show and then condescendingly clap at them.

Some names you can not pronounce phonetically - "Langlois" for example. In same countries you can, but the French pronounce it very differently and it is a French last name. And I think the last name evolved to be pronounced phonetically for some families due to the consistent mispronouncation, that the last name evolved into something else. Which often happens with last names when people migrate to another country. My last name is "Stackman" but it evolved from a Prussian surname that was similar, but was both pronounced and spelt differently. I believe they changed it because it was both easier to write and say.

@@rossini55 I generally go straight to the spelling if that's what they need, but I find with pronunciation, people often stick with their initial guess and I tend to just leave it. It's never occurred to me to make a big deal of it, and go as far as this woman did.

The ability to laugh at nearly any topic has been linked on numerous studies to people having a higher intelligence /emotional control. I'd wager she might have a high iq but little understanding what to do with it. Like giving an Aston Martin to someone who can't drive.

I feel like shola is living in a constant loop of stress and anxiety to stay on top of the issues that are most offensive to people. I always thought it odd how a silly visual observation such as likening a person in a particular design of dress to the particular shape within an inanimate object, somehow got packaged as an expression of phobia against an entire religion.
If she finds Britain such a horrible place to be why not leave? It's like going to a restaurant hating the food and then ordering 3 courses and then going back the next day.

Humour has gotten the people of Britain through some tough times it has been part of their identity for thousands of years. The silly thing is that she brings up the "letterbox" comment as an example of something that is wrong now, just as it was wrong back then but ignores the fact that when Stephen Fry made the exact same joke on Have I got News for You, and a Guardian columnist made the same joke it was considered to be funny and not the collapse of Western society.

Any TV company who asks her to appear knows exactly how she is going to behave. ITV know full well that she is a motormouth. perhaps they think that is entertaining but it makes the listeners ears bleed

That whole interview was so badly handled from start to finish. Apart from that We all saw the way Dr Shola sat smiling at the beginning. How could we disagree with someone who smiles so nicely? That is her device to try and get people to think well of her. Well it failed massively by the end didn’t it! Her self centred arrogance knew no boundaries when she ranted and raved and demanded that we all listen to her and agree with her every word or we are all guilty of all that she suspects of us. This lady will keep on spouting this nonsense and I respect anyone who can keep their patience long enough to try to get a word in edgeways which more often than not they never do. She is obnoxious!!
