The Golden Child is a classic also within Charles Dance as the antagonist. Eddie plays a finder of missing children. It's a movie I think you guys would enjoy.
One of the best films of the 80s saw it in the cinema in 1983 everyone was in stitches watching it. So many funny moments too many to mention. A great film to watch at Christmas time. Cannot believe this is 40 years old this year.
The 80's decade gave us some of the best Hollywood comedy movies; I definitely recommend that you watch the following: 1) BREWSTER's MILLIONS. 2) SEE NO EVIL HEAR NO EVIL. 3) BOWFINGER. 4) FATHER OF THE BRIDE. 5) ROXANNE. 6) PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES. 7) POLICE ACADAMY 1,2,3,4,5, and 6.
The guy sitting behind the desk at the police station that is telling Winthrop about the angel dust is Frank Oz, he was a long time puppeteer for Sesame Street. He did the voice of Grover and he has done the voice of Yoda in all of the Star Wars movies. Also the guy at the pawn shop is Bo Diddley, at the time he was a very popular blues guitarist and singer.
Also voice of Miss Piggy. Bo Diddley was an artist from the 50's. A guitarist so iconic there's a beat named after him. Bo Diddley, nicknamed “the Originator” for his role in the transition from blues to rock and roll, drove music into a new era with his rollicking rhythms and edgy guitar.
A real classic comedy from the 80s. Dan Aykroyd on top of his game. Thanks for the reaction. Great as always. Like many mentioned: To know more about the Duke Brothers fate, watch "Coming To America" (1988). It's a quick scene, but a great one.
Every time I watch this I notice it's the Duke Bros doorman whom escalates the entire situation. Given 'circumstances' it's is an odd action, which is needed to drive to story forward.
Gave me a good chuckle that you thought the Dukes, who just made $300,000 in a stock trade would bother ‘stealing’ $50,000 from themselves😅. Fun reaction as always!
Yeah, it's illegal but they still use to run a company into the ground!! They did that to Gamestop a few years ago but Elon Musk shorted the stock and a lot Hedge Fund managers lost a lot of money!! It was great!!
Some pump & dump group the other year convinced gullible people to buy Gamestop, when it briefly soared of course the con artists sold. A bunch of people got burned thinking it would keep going up.
Another Eddie Murphy movie I can't recommend enough is The Golden Child (1986) it's an underrated gem, in it he plays a social worker tasked with rescuing a gifted kid with magical powers who can prevent the end of the world. & a Dan Akroyd movie I highly recommend is The Blues Brothers (1980) it's a comedy musical (also directed by John Landis) in which he stars along with the late John Belushi as blues musicians getting their old band back together to raise the money needed to save their childhood orphanage. Along the way, they fall foul of the police, neo nazi's and a rival band. Please react to both as soon as you can :)
Wonderful reactions to this awesome comedy movie, from the excellent Media Knights. The main cast in Trading Places are incredible, but the two standouts for me are... Not Jamie Lee Curtis, but Hollywood legends Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy! :)
Hi guys, it's great you've seen this comedy classic, I highly recommend Coming To America - also directed by John Landis & starring Eddie Murphy. It's connected to this movie in a small way, please react to soon.
You gotta watch True Lies! Jamie Lee Curtis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Cameron. One liners, comedy, romance, mind blowing practical effects. One of the best 90s action movie ever. What more could you ask for? It's everything you like so much!
Jamie Lee Curtis said she was 24 in the movie, but she was just 21! Also the fact that the movie title has a double meaning. Trading Places (physically swapping places with someone else) and Trading Places (The Stock Exchange where you trade) A trading place if you will.
In case you didn't know, minimum wage in 1983 was $3.35. Of course the cost of living was a lot lower back then. Annual income $21,000 New house $82,000 New car $7,000 Average monthly rent $335 Gas $1.17 a gallon Harvard Tuition $8,195
@@pebrain21 Not that the legendary Frank Oz was missed out. At this point in time, he's already established himself as THE voice of Miss Piggy and Fozzie. The other 2 celebrities were just starting their careers.
I had a Betamax player given to me as a kid with two tapes, one blank to record from TV and Trading Places. I now realise why they gave the Betamax away but I’ll be forever thankful for Trading Places, apart from the comedy the classical music was a revelation for me. ❤
This movie came out in 1983 and was Eddie Murphy's 2nd movie. Hard to believe you haven't seen it until now. He also did his stand up comedy special DELIRIOUS in 1983. His first movie was 48 HOURS in 1982. All this while he was still a cast member on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE from 1980 to mid 1984.
Absolute classic!!! Love this movie. Fun Fact, Don Ameche, who played Mortimer Duke, doesn't like to swear so his scene where he says "F*** HIM!!" was done in a single take because he didn't want to swear.
I frickin' love this movie! I watch it every Christmas season. I don't know if anyone pointed it out already, but the man standing next to Billy Ray in the jail cell was Giancarlo Esposito. 🤗
Funny Story: Don Ameche (Mortimer) had a really hard time saying the N word in the film (he was a civil rights activist). Eddie Murphy convinced him to do it.
Best Eddie Murphy movie, hands down, was his first, 48 Hrs. Nick Nolte co- starred, who was a huge leading man in the 80s and 90s. It was also the template for all the cop buddy movies that filled cinemas ever since.
When Denise made the comment about comedy being hard t caught my attention. I have been a long time member of toastmasters and have achieved some success in public speaking. Doing comedy whether in a speech or other presentation can be exhausting! It is a lot of work being funny! When Dustin Hoffman was interviewed about his movie Tootsie. In talking about comedy he even got emotional. One of his statements stuck with me he said "comedy is serious business". SO insightful!
Thanks for visiting the golden age of Eddie Murphy. The comedy "Coming To America" from this movie era had an "easter egg" joke in it referring to this movie "😂Trading Places"❤👏🏾
Had to watch this for Sociology class a few years back when we were learning about nature vs nurture theories. I'd already seen the movie as a child but obviously never picked up on that as a central theme until I watched it again as a teen.
I don't know why but here in Italy this film is a Christmas classic, they have been broadcasting it on one of the main television networks for practically 40 years, we are now so used to it that the few times they haven't broadcast it there have been protests!!! Here the title has been translated into: "an armchair for two". One of the films most loved by Italians
So glad you guys enjoyed this movie! Is this a Christmas movie or not?🤔 Please watch Coming to America with Eddie Murphy... There's a cameo there you might recognize niw that you've seen this movie... Did you recognize Giancarlo Esposito ( Gus Fring in Breaking Bad) in jail with Eddie Murphy?
You notice how Valentine's demeanor changed when it came to his house he became serious and wanted his place respected and threw everyone out when they brushed him off and even considered his neighbors "and keep it down out there my neighbors work too!"
Hi beautiful people, I first saw Trading Places when I was 23 years old in 1983, It is a film that I can and have watched dozens of times. Seeing Eddie Murphy at the absolute height of his powers has brought me decades of laughter. I hope it does the same for you. Watch 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop for more of Murphy at his height. As always Denise is FIRE.🥰😘😃
Good comedies are the glue that holds society together, this one does a fine job. The genre hasn't had so much success lately in the main stream, and that is unfortunate.
Here is a fun fact: The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was passed in 2010. You can find Section 746 on pages 364 and 365 of the law’s 849 pages. Section 746 has been called the Eddie Murphy Rule. Until Dodd-Frank’s Eddie Murphy provision, it was not illegal to base trades on crop information before it was released
Hey Ari and Denyse, on to even more funny flicks like, "The Waterboy", "Beverly Hills Cop", "Austin Powers", "The Hangover" , "Tropic Thunder", "Coming to America", "Caddyshack. Let's GOooooooo!!!!!
Great reaction! Y’all need to get to “Coming To America” ASAP cuz there’s an awesome cameo from Randolph & Mortimer Duke in it ! Arguably Eddie Murphys greatest work !!
While everyone else seems focused on recommending other Murphy movies and other comedies, my wife and I both had the same thought when you both mentioned questioning your own sanity at the onset of the ‘experiment’. 1944’s Gaslight is a phycological roller coaster and is the origin of the modern phrase ‘gaslighting’.
Glad you like this. For another movie where the little guys get the big bad guy right in the pocket book, check out The Sting (1973) starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
All those early 80s to 90s movies, involving directing by frank Oz, (he always puts himself in his movies...look for the bald guy with glasses!) and films involved with acting writing etc., with Ramis, Ivan Reitman,Akroyd etc., and these monster comedies that first used the ultra serious John Williams for music!!!, was just all comedy genius! Going back to animal House, blues Brothers, stripes, of course the Ghostbusters stuff....it's just all comedy gold! Pro tip, U WILL see a cameo again of the Duke Brothers, in the first Coming to America, also an Eddie Murphy movie! The Duke Brothers are Old School Hollywood royalty! Been acting since black and white! Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche!
YAAASS. I love this movie. Hilarious! I love watching it after Christmas and before New Year's. When you start doing comedies regularly, you're in for some real gems from the past, especially from John Hughes. Planes, Trains and Automobiles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller....
Loved the analysis on this. You guys really went in depth with the commentary even more so than usual. This movie is a classic and had great undertones of social consciousness. Coming to America should be your next watch.
Both Dan Ackroyd and Eddie Murphy were at the top of their game during this era. I second many of the other recomendations made, especially 48 Hrs and Beverly Hills Cop!
His first ten to fifteen years were unbelievable....Penelope do you realize where I've BEEN?.... That's the kinda stuff they use on crowds and I still walked in here like a man!
Great reaction and some fun-facts about this movie. The cop in booking that finds the PCP on Louis was Frank Oz, the famous puppeteer and voice for Yoda and many other Muppets and characters like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Grover and Cookie Monster. He plays a similar role in Blues Brothers. And the the pawn broker is played by the one-and-only rock and rol hall of fame Bo Diddley. There are other Cameos too like, Richard Hunt as Wilson as a stock market trader, Al Franken as a Baggage Handler in the train, a young Giancarlo Esposito as a cellmate when Eddie character is in jail, and Jamie Lee Curtis younger sister Kelly Curtis as a cameo too as Penelope's friend Muffy on the scene in the country club. Keep up the good work.
Al Franken and his comedy writing partner, Tom Davis, played the two baggage handlers on the train. According to Franken, the script originally had a scene where the two of them smoked a joint on the train, but the scene was cut because they decided to have Eddie Murphy smoke a joint in the bathroom instead. The result: Al and Tom were playing "stoned" through all their scenes, but without the smoking scene, they're just a couple of really dumb guys.
I love early Eddie Murphy. I like some of his more recent work but not quite as much as his classic movies. Beverly Hills Cop is one of his best. The ending to Trading Places is so satisfying 😊
Not sure if you caught a couple of cameos in this movie. The police officer at the desk 11:59 when Louis is first booked is played by Frank Oz who provided the voice and puppetry for Yoda as well as the Muppets Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, and even Bert, Cookie Monster, and Grover from Sesame Street! Also there is a very young Giancarlo Esposito in the cell with Billy Ray. 8:15
And there's also Richard Hunt as Wilson, the stockbroker for the Dukes. He's a fellow puppeteer with Frank Oz in a bunch of Jim Henson works. He passed away shortly after Jim, sadly.
Al Franken and Tom Davis, who worked together as a comedy duo on Saturday Night Live, played the baggage handlers. I'm not sure I would call any of these appearances "cameos," though. The word "cameo" implies that the audience would be expected to recognize them, and I don't think it makes much difference to the movie whether we recognize any of these folks.
Ha! I work in that building! The home of Duke and Duke, the boardroom is preserved as it was in the film, on the 5th floor! Quite the tourist attraction, even after all these years!
If you want another awesome 80s comedy with Jamie Lee Curtis, watch A Fish Called Wanda. Has John Cleese, Michael Palin, and Kevin Kline as well. You’ll love it!
The "YEAH!" guy is one of my favorite parts of this film. (I have MANY favorite parts of this film.) At 13:17 when Eddie Murphy comes back with the "yeah!" - cracks me up. 16:01 - another favorite moment that showcases the brilliant acting of Denholm Elliot (Coleman the butler). You didn't include the exact moment in your edit, but I know you'll know the moment I mean. Just before he closes the door on Winthorpe the second time, a flash of pity crosses his face. "My old boss might be a pompous entitled jerk, but he doesn't deserve this crap that my real bosses the Duke Brothers are forcing me to do. I hate myself for the part I am being forced to play." All in a flash of an instant of facial expression before he closes the door. His other best line comes as the re-united gang are planning their revenge against the Brothers, and it's two words: "Egg nog?" Probably fifty years of class warfare and pent-up resentment boiled into those two simple words. Just brilliant. Louie is on his knees at 17:03, just like Billy Ray was on his knees pretending to be a legless blind veteran. Full circle! I've seen this film dozens of times, and had never noticed that detail, until another commenter on another YT reaction mentioned it. Always something new to notice! The opening montage over the credits, you pointed out the brilliant visual story-telling. The rich and the poor, the privileged and the working-class. The landmarks of Philadelphia. Set up the setting and the themes right off the bat, without even a line of dialogue. This was also a break-out role for Jamie Lee Curtis. Prior to this, she was mostly known as a "scream queen," just appearing in horror films. This gave her a chance to prove her ability acting in a different role, as a comedian, and also showed off two of her other impressive assets to a wide audience. This film opened up a wider range of acting opportunities. As a Christmas story, it also does have a taste of that Scrooge story, as far as Louie's redemption arc, and the general class distinctions and inequality being addressed. Most other reactors I've seen comment on the film and the actors and the comedy, but you guys really dove into the deeper issues of social justice and income inequality and sex work and generosity and empathy. Very appreciated, to recognize and comment on all of those things! It really is more than "just" a funny comedy; it touches on all of those social issues, using satirical comedy as the sugar to help that medicine go down.
Loved your reaction! One of my all-time classics! ❤😁 Now, you really have to watch "Coming to America" too. I don't want to reveal too much, but let's just say: Eddie Murphy in the lead, in full swing too. 🤭
So the short of what happened at the end was because the orange crops weren't affected by winter, then there would large amounts of cheap oranges. The Dukes thought the crops were affected, so instead of selling high then buying low, they bought high then sold low. Aykroyd and Murphy knew the real crop report so they sold high and bought low. The numbers they showed on the boards meant that Aykroyd and Murphy made contracts to buy oranges at $0.29 a pound in units of a thousand, and also made contracts to sell those exact same oranges at $1.42 a pound, making a profit of 545%. Oranges are traded in units of a thousand pounds, with several units per single contract, and you could hear traders talking about buying and selling hundreds of contracts. It's not exactly known how much they invested with the life savings and the money meant for Beaks, but the current guesstimate is in the tens of millions, possibly over 100 million. What was done to achieve such success (trading commodities on inside information obtained from the government) wasn't illegal back when the movie was made, but when it was made illegal in 2010, it was appropriately named the Eddie Murphy Rule.
This is such a fantastic movie for that big social science experiment: what happens when "Trading Places"...... I've seen immigrants come to this country with only a nickel in their pocket but a million in drive and hope and do very well. Extremely kind and generous. I've also found rich people to be kind and generous as well. I think 'new money' are the ones that deserve the bad rap. I got plenty of stories about that.... I appreciated your commentary about remembering our blessings especially during the holidays. People quickly discount having a roof over their head and food in the fridge. Or even worse, their good health. Think again if you don't have one of those..... Loved your reaction to the movie. One of my favorites especially from Eddie. Wishing you a happy, lovely and blessed holiday season!
12:10: Want your mind blown? That cop relaying what Winthorp's possessions are is puppeteer Frank Oz--voice of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Cookie Monster, Bert, Sam Eagle, Grover, AND Yoda. 😊
Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy were the kings of the screwball comedies back in the day. 🎥 😮 I just recognized Al Franken and when I checked IMDB, Giancarlo Esposito was in the jail scene. 😂
This is an all-time favorite of mine, great reaction. The Beverly Hills Cop movies and Coming to America are a must. I would say 48 Hours, but I think people don't react to that movie because it would be hell to edit.
Before doing movies, Eddie and Dan was part of the OG cast of SNL. The "Not ready for primetime" cast. Also, Eddie was a standup comedian. I suggest you watch his show - Eddie Murphy - RAW. It really lives up to the name😂

Scumbags will be scumbags though.
“I am Inga from Sweden.”
“But…….you’re wearing lederhosen.”
“Ya, for sure Sweden.”😂😂😂
The short selling they did in the stock market scene actually helped change market rules in 2010 and became known as the Eddie Murphy rule.
Great performances all around! Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy were great. They stole the scenes they were in!
A movie you can enjoy every time you watch it. Just doesn't get old.
Hi guys, it's great you've seen this comedy classic, I highly recommend Coming To America - also directed by John Landis & starring Eddie Murphy. It's connected to this movie in a small way, please react to soon.
Exactly what I was coming here to say. Agree 💯. Both movies are equally as good, also.
Adding it to our list! Thank you for your suggestion 😃
@@OfficialMediaKnights It's an unofficial sequel of sorts.
@@OfficialMediaKnights Cool! 😄 I'll look forward to your reaction to it. You're welcome 👍🏻
Mortimer Duke (Don Ameche) and Randolph Duke (Ralph Bellamy) had a scene in a park with Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy). "Mortimer, we're back !"
The cop that booked windthorp with the PCP was Frank Oz who did many voices for the Muppets and Star Wars Yoda.
You gotta watch True Lies! Jamie Lee Curtis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Cameron. One liners, comedy, romance, mind blowing practical effects. One of the best 90s action movie ever. What more could you ask for? It's everything you like so much!
"...Yes, but they were all bad..."
A little surprised that you didn't recognize Giancarlo Esposito standing behind Murphy in the jail cell.
Honestly me too!
Annual income $21,000
New house $82,000
New car $7,000
Average monthly rent $335
Gas $1.17 a gallon
Harvard Tuition $8,195
8:04 That's Giancarlo Esposito behind Eddie.
24:47 That's Al Franken
Oh wow! It is! Didn’t recognize him!
Everybody always misses Frank Oz - the balding cop - he's the voice of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and many more muppets.
@@pebrain21 Not that the legendary Frank Oz was missed out. At this point in time, he's already established himself as THE voice of Miss Piggy and Fozzie. The other 2 celebrities were just starting their careers.
@@paullow3377 Yeah but nobody knew what he looked like. So I guess that's why he was easy to miss.
You guys go from strength to strength, great reaction and an absolute Xmas must in my household. Happy Christmas and keep them coming.
I had a Betamax player given to me as a kid with two tapes, one blank to record from TV and Trading Places. I now realise why they gave the Betamax away but I’ll be forever thankful for Trading Places, apart from the comedy the classical music was a revelation for me. ❤
It’s such a great watch! Not a bad choice for your first movie 😃
Except for that ridiculous scene on the train ("Yah, from Sveden..."), this is among my favorite comedies from that era.
The cop that books Dan Akroyd at the beginning is Frank Oz.
"Four Rooms"" from 1995 is for me one of the greatest movies to watch on New Year. I wonder why nobody reacted to it in the past years.
Adding it to our list! Although we won’t make it in time for New Years. Thank you for the suggestion!
Omg, you're like 1 of 4 people I've ever seen besides myself that's actually recommended that movie.
Absolute classic!!! Love this movie. Fun Fact, Don Ameche, who played Mortimer Duke, doesn't like to swear so his scene where he says "F*** HIM!!" was done in a single take because he didn't want to swear.
Thank you for the fun fact! We had a blast watching this 😄
@@OfficialMediaKnights He was also very uncomfortable saying the N word even with it just as a line and Eddie needed to convince him it was ok.
Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours, Trading Places and Coming to America are Murphy's best early films, IMO. The Golden Child is also good.
I love how the characters of the Duke brothers used the Koch brothers as inspiration.
If you haven't seen it, Beverly Hills Cop... It a dramady and one of the best things Eddie Murphy has done..
As always Denise is FIRE.🥰😘😃
another great reaction, this brought back so many memories. you guys rock. can't wait to see what the next is
Good comedies are the glue that holds society together, this one does a fine job. The genre hasn't had so much success lately in the main stream, and that is unfortunate.
Ha ha what a fun movie! I haven't seen it for ages but it was so great rewatching it with you. Happy holidays guys.
I always enjoy your movie reactions! Bear in mind, in 1983, the minimum wage where I lived in Seattle, was $ 3.40 an hour!
My favorite scene the Duke brothers explaining “as in a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich and Eddie Murphy looks straight into the camera😁

Dan Ackroyd & Eddie Murphy Are The Best 💯
The Townhome where the both lived is located on the my favorite street in Philadelphia -- Delancey Street. I have walked by it many times.
Limitless.
48 Hrs. (Eddie Murphy’s first movie) is one of the best movies ever made.
Another great John Landis movie with Dan Aykroyd is the Blues Brothers (1980). Classic 👍
A classic in every sense
Carrie Fisher is in it.
The Duke Brothers house is not LIKE A MANSION,,, it IS A MANSION.
Thank you for the fun fact! We’ll keep an eye out 😄 Also adding these to our list!
Fun little known fact about "Trading places". It is a Christmas movie in Italy.
I recommend you check out Tremors, Tremors 2 and Tremors 3. The first one stars Kevin Bacon. This series is so endearing and full of hilarity.
Love tremors and tremors 2
Best line- Jim Belushi in his underwear returning to the party "Hey-- look what happened to me!" 😂😂😂😂😂
YAAASS. I love this movie. Hilarious! I love watching it after Christmas and before New Year's.
When you start doing comedies regularly, you're in for some real gems from the past, especially from John Hughes. Planes, Trains and Automobiles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller....
48 Hours is a must. Nick Nolte as the gruff detective in a great twist on the buddy-cop movie. Great sound and camera work too...
In Italy this is THE classic Christmas Movie
Loved the analysis on this. You guys really went in depth with the commentary even more so than usual. This movie is a classic and had great undertones of social consciousness. Coming to America should be your next watch.
Both Dan Ackroyd and Eddie Murphy were at the top of their game during this era. I second many of the other recomendations made, especially 48 Hrs and Beverly Hills Cop!
His first ten to fifteen years were unbelievable....Penelope do you realize where I've BEEN?.... That's the kinda stuff they use on crowds and I still walked in here like a man!
Would loved to see your reaction to “It’s a Wonderful Life” if you haven’t seen it yet. Classic Xmas movie. Keep up the great work!
1:07 - 😳 *_... Talk about an omen for what was to come in THIS very movie!!_* 🤣🤣🤣
Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy were the kings of the screwball comedies back in the day. 🎥
😮 I just recognized Al Franken and when I checked IMDB, Giancarlo Esposito was in the jail scene. 😂
Al with his SNL writing partner, Tom Davis.
This is an all-time favorite of mine, great reaction. The Beverly Hills Cop movies and Coming to America are a must. I would say 48 Hours, but I think people don't react to that movie because it would be hell to edit.
Beverly Hills Cop is Eddie Murphy's best movie!
Coming To America!!! Flashbacks to The Dukes!
Before doing movies, Eddie and Dan was part of the OG cast of SNL. The "Not ready for primetime" cast. Also, Eddie was a standup comedian. I suggest you watch his show - Eddie Murphy - RAW.
It really lives up to the name😂
Coming to America!!!😂
One of the best comedies of all times ... one of my favorites ... and your reaction was son espontaneous ...🤩🤩
The guy standing against the jail bars when Billy Ray is in jail is Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Gustavo "Gus" Fring from Breaking Bad.
