This reminds me of a story my uncle told me about his grandfather. He said that every day he would go and visit his grandfather and he would give my uncle $5 to go to the store and get a 5th of Jack Daniels and 2 packs of Winston cigarettes and he could keep the change. Over time and years passing he did the same routine every day but slowly that $5 would go from having some change left over to barely coving it to not being enough. He said even though that $5 would no longer cover the price of that 5th and 2 packs of cigarettes he would still get them for his grandfather. Another daily routine his grandfather did was make a pan of biscuits every moring and walk down to his pond in his back yard barefooted and sit on a swing all day and eat that entire pan of biscuits.
The cop who found the PCP in Winthorp's pocket is Frank Oz - director, and voiced many Muppet characters - Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Sam Eagle, Cookie Monster, Bert, and Grover on The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. He also performed the character of Yoda in the Star Wars series, beginning with The Empire Strikes Back. ALSO - the pawn shop owner who gave Winthorp $50 for his watch was Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame member Bo Diddley. The thing Eddie Murphy was waving around in the train compartment was a fancy African fly swatter also known as a fly wisk. People who live in tropical countries - Camaroon according to Valentine - have to swish these to keep off the flies. ALSO - the baggage handlers on the train were Franken and Davis, a team of writer/performers on Saturday Night Life - and Al Franken (with curly hair) became a US Senator from Minnesota.
The younger person you might have recognized from the jail cell scene (Eddie) was Giancarlo Esposito from Breaking Bad. The butler, Denholm Elliott, is Marcus Brody from the Indiana Jones movies. He got lost in his own museum once. 😅

one of my all time faves. I rewatch it every year. In layman's terms, the ending scene at the exchange can be explained by the following. Winthorp and Valentine did a shortsell. They waited until price got really high and then flooded the market with shares that they didn't have (in the hopes that they would buy them back at a lower price during the same session). This caused the price to start dropping due to the increased supply. Then when the price plummeted after the crop report, they bought back all the shares that they promised when they sold except for the shares bought by the Dukes. Since the Dukes were stuck with all of those now worthless shares, they were ruined, and since Winthorp and Valentine now hold shares probably 2-3x their purchase price, they're rich. Until 2010, it was perfectly legal to trade on crop information before that information was officially announced. Congress, in 2010, passed legislation to prevent this type of trading and it is commonly known as the Eddie Murphy Rule, named such after this film.

You should definitely do Coming to America next while this movie is still fresh as there's a little Easter egg in it that will make much more sense. Eddie plays multiple characters including a white dude, yep white face.
In the jail cell scene, the guy standing on the left is a young GIANCARLO ESPOSITO, who was also in Spike Lee's movies. One of the best comedies of the 80's!!!, so glad i grew up in this era even though we had to watch this on a 30 pound VCR with a remote that had cables attached to it! 🙃
Loved watching this Reaction from you two. Interesting Fact; the 2 Actors who played the Duke Brothers, Don Ameche & Ralph Bellamy, were both themselves Big Stars in Film & Theater in the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s.
A breakdown of what happens at the end: the Dukes were given a false report which stated orange harvest would be weak and the value of oranges would be really high. In reality "cold winter had not affected the orange harvest", so there was going to be a surplus of oranges and their real value low. So the Dukes wanted to secure as much oranges as they could, even if the price was still high. When the official report was announced, panic hit the whole stock market and anyone holding orange stock (like the Dukes) wanted to get rid´of them to cut the losses. Valentine and Winthorpe did not have any stocks at the beginning but they sold "futures" of orange stock which are agreements to supply certain amount at a fixed price, which was high at the moment they sold the futures. When the value of the stock went down, the duo waited until the price was literally at rock bottom and then bought all the shared they needed, from the desperate holders of those shares, to satisfy those contracts. In short, they sold high and got to buy cheap, and that difference was their big win. For the Dukes, it was to complete opposite: a total bankrupsy and one way ticket to the poor house.
The Dukes were played by old time movie actors Don Ameche (Mortimer) and Ralph Bellamy (Randolph). They were well known actors back in the days of The Golden Age of Hollywood. Ameche won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the 1986 film “Cocoon”. Rock n Roll Legend Bo Diddley also appears as the pawnbroker.

Eddie was approached for Ghostbusters but was already working on Beverly Hills Cop. That would’ve definitely cemented them as Great co stars had it worked out
The music in the opening that you commented sounded so grand was the overture from Mozart’s opera The Marriage of Figaro. Many of the themes and story beats of this film were inspired by operas from that time period. I also would highly recommend watching the movie Amadeus at some point.
Great reaction. Can't believe you didn't recognize Gustavo Fring from Braking Bad, he was the one standing next to Eddie in jail. I knew ya'll would love this. If ya'll haven't seen Coming To America i would really recommend it. They do a callback to this movie!
Originally, this was supposed to be a vehicle for Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder after the success of Silver Streak and Stir Crazy. As hilarious as those two are, I think they got it right with Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy.
An absolute classic!! Watch this every year near Christmas time. Dan, Eddie, Jamie & Denholm (butler) all play this perfectly, as do the two Dukes! Perfect comedy, and perfect revenge story!
Good to see you two going back and watching what made Eddie Murphy one of the most coveted and successful actors back in the 80's. His 90's stuff was okay, obviously subjective on my part, but you can't go wrong with his 80's stuff. You'll have to eventually watch all of his 80's movies. Good reaction as always.
Here are a couple of cameo fun facts. The pawnbroker was played by legendary blues musician Bo Diddley. Aykroyd and Murphy got their starts on Saturday Night Live. Two of the SNL sketch writers were the partnership of Al Franken and Tom Davis. Franken & Davis also appeared once in awhile back then in SNL sketches. In this film, they played the gorilla handlers on the train. Franken later became a US Senator representing Minnesota.
One of my favorite movies EVER!!! 👍😎👍 LETS GOOOO!! Edit: Don Ameche HATED so called "blue humor" (disgusting or offensive jokes) and demanded a closed set for that bathroom scene. He nailed it in one take. 😊
"My Girl" would be a great film for your channel. It reunites Dan Aykroyd and Jaime Lee Curtis and I definitely recommend watching "Coming To America" (a must) which starred Eddie Murphy. Great reaction guys!!
This is an 80s classic!! If you're going back to 'old movies' 😂 then 80s early 90s are the best ever! There's literally an unlimited amount of movies in these decades you could choose from. I'll throw one in for you... Coming to America 🇺🇸 another Eddie Murphy classic!
Two great films in a row! You guys have no idea how much fun it was watching this awesome movie with you. The casting of Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy with those two great young comedians, Akroyd and Murphy was perfect.
Have you seen Dirty Rotten Scoundrels? I highly recommend! Love Dan & Eddie...Dan was in Blues Brothers, Eddie in Beverly Hills Cop, Daddy Daycare, etc. All so good!
I can remember my Mom coming home from seeing this movie and absolutely raving over Jamie Lee Curtis and her costumes. They are an excellent example of how costumes truly make the character. You need to catch up on Everything Everywhere All At Once to see Jamie ,again. Mom also adored Eddie and delighted in the scene in the toilet where he is secretly listening

I love this film. Especially since it takes place in my hometown of Philadelphia, PA. 😊 Fun facts: 1) The actor who played Clarence Beeks, Paul Gleason, also played in two other classic 1980's films: "The Breakfast Club" and the original "Die Hard". 2) The two actors who played the Duke Brothers, Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche, reprised their roles in a cameo appearance in "Coming To America". (1988) Hence, "Coming To America" is a sort of sequel to "Trading Places".
They did this to Winthorpe to prove a theory that one of the rich dude has: that people’s background, and how they were raised can largely determine how successful they are.

Dan Aykroyd portrayed upperclass insulation from the real world perfectly. Can't see another actor in the role.
An absolute classic!! Watch this every year near Christmas time. Dan, Eddie, Jamie & Denholm (butler) all play this perfectly, as do the two Dukes!
Perfect comedy, and perfect revenge story!
All those years of acting school and all you get to say is "yeah".
I'm so happy you have watched this BEFORE Coming To America; for reasons that will become clear when you watch that movie ;)
And Edie Falco on the bus watching him eat the fish.
“In Philadelphia it’s worth fif-ty dollars.” 😂
The Randolph and Mortimer cameo in Coming to America was so funny. 🤣🤣🤣
I was wondering how long it would take for someone to spoil that. Glad I wasn't disappointed. 🙄
@@tuffs4it You want me to say spoiler alert on a 35 year old movie? Haha 🤣
@@TheGarBrett All these films are new them, genius. That's the lamest excuse anyone can come up with. Haha!🤣😂
Just wanted to say that the gentleman in the pawn shop is Bo Diddley he was a famous blues guitar.
One of my favorite movies EVER!!! 👍😎👍 LETS GOOOO!!
Edit: Don Ameche HATED so called "blue humor" (disgusting or offensive jokes) and demanded a closed set for that bathroom scene. He nailed it in one take. 😊
🤣😂🤣😂🤣
"*YEAH* !"
38:16 No matter how many times I've seen this, the "Ugh Ugh!" in the chant/song always cracks me up
"My Girl" would be a great film for your channel. It reunites Dan Aykroyd and Jaime Lee Curtis and I definitely recommend watching "Coming To America" (a must) which starred Eddie Murphy. Great reaction guys!!
this is what popcorn was made for good movie
jamie lee curtis breaking a fever is the best part of this movie
😮 sure would've made me feel better lol
This is an 80s classic!! If you're going back to 'old movies' 😂 then 80s early 90s are the best ever! There's literally an unlimited amount of movies in these decades you could choose from. I'll throw one in for you... Coming to America 🇺🇸 another Eddie Murphy classic!
Coming to America is a great suggestion. It is in the same universe and includes a cameo of the Duke brothers.
I saw this film for the first time on a plane to the west indies, back in 1983 and it’s still one of my favourite movies.
Two great films in a row! You guys have no idea how much fun it was watching this awesome movie with you. The casting of Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy with those two great young comedians, Akroyd and Murphy was perfect.
One of my favorite Christmas movies.
WINTHROP WINTHROP
Hoooooooo boy! I’m looking forward to this one! I was 15 when this was released!
The pawn shop owner was Bo Diddley.
I've loved this movie since I was ten years old. We rented it as a "New Release" from a furniture and appliance store that also rented VHS and Betamax tapes back in the day.
An absolute Comedy Classic. Cheers and Salutations from Canada, Y'all. 🥃👍✌❤
Hahaha. Yes. I got it from a shop. It was the only one in my village that rented them. Greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭
That is Jim Belushi. John Belushi's brother from Saturday Night Live & Blues Brothers
I love this film. Especially since it takes place in my hometown of Philadelphia, PA. 😊
Fun facts:
1) The actor who played Clarence Beeks, Paul Gleason, also played in two other classic 1980's films: "The Breakfast Club" and the original "Die Hard".
An extremely well done, banger of a comedy.
Great watchin with you 2 as always. Murphy and Akroyd had some solid chemistry in this one.
Billy Ray Valentine! This is one of my favorite movies
Oh man this is classic. One of Eddie Murphy's best movies.
