Great stuff! I am a physical teraphist and a baseball coach and I´ve just found this video because a kid of my U15 baseball team is dealing with this kind of sympthoms. I presumed it could be OSD but i didn´t know how to manage a proper evaluation. This really help me. Thanks!
I am 44 and I've had OSD since my youth. I never really had it explained this thoroughly as you did. People ask me all the time, 'Whoa what's with the double knee?' and know I can explain it better. My main issue as a adult was definitely not being able to kneel down with out a pad or pillow and during workouts I feel a sharp pain when I push on the exercise machines (treadmill, bike, elliptical). I use knee braces and the single band that goes above the bump that seems to give me stability and confidence that knee won't give out.
Hi, You seem to be doing all the right things! Best of luck!
I have the same pain and have been dealing with it since I was 9years, I used to engage in sports then but, I had to stop. I am 45 years now and if I must kneel down I have to kneel on a soft landing and I use the sides of my knees to kneel down.
I'm a 75 year old male. I had this same disease as a youth. It started at age 13 in one knee and by age 15 I had it in both knees. The treatment them was tapping my knees. As I got older I just wore the type of support braces that you see basketball players wear. I was restricted from sports activities until age 17. It seemed like a very slow healing process. My best friend at the time had it as well in just one knee and his Doctor put in him a full leg cast for 6 months. He seemed to heal quicker after that. Good luck and have patience. After healing, I've not had anymore knee problems.
YOU'RE THE OLDEST PERSON I'VE SEEN WITH IT AND I'M 57 WITH IT SINCE 14...1979
@@vincentharris110 Sorry to hear you still have it. Mine ran its course from age 13-17 because of a fast growth spurt in which I gained 8 inches in height in 4 years.
How you did
@@dhesskuntesla0775 Well Dhesskun, If you are asking how this disease started with me, it began at age 13. Right about that time I was learning how to do the track event known as the pole vault. While learning, I sometimes missed the pad at the bottom and landed on my feet on hard dirt. I noticed my leg hunting at that time. The pain got worse so I went to the Doctor. He diagnosed Osgood Schlatter's disease of the tibia. I was growing fast due to my teen years and grew 8 inches in 4 years between the ages of 13-17. This further complicated the healing process. I stopped growing around age 18 and the healing process speed up and by 20 years old I had little or no pain. So, from my experience a long time ago, I would encourage anybody with this disease to be patient and hopefully, you will also be completely healed once again. Good Luck
Best video by far relating to this issue. GJ
thanks doc the best video on Osgood
I'm 30 and had Osgood since I was a freshmen in highschool. The pain was a burning and tight sensation that at times were unbearable. I continued to be active ein my college years and with 100% certainty, I have no more pain. I've accidentally fallen on my knees and bumped them badly, but still no more pain. I have spurs and as the doctor alluded too, I can't kneel on hard surfaces, but I've had no pain since my junior year in hs. I'm not sure if it's common for the pain to completely subside or I'm just one of the lucky bunch.
Does it still sting if you hit it into a table or no
@@davidolajide3707 nope, no pain no sting no pain. It's only uncomfortable when trying to stay on my knees that's all.
@@petervang893 oh okay cause I have had the same thing for almost 10 years and the pain was at its worst in 2017 but I basically feel no pain now too. Using all my force on it doesn't hurt anymore but if I accidentally walk into a table, it would still sting
Me too, but sometimes I feel pain on it, I don't why
I have a question, at the 6:13 you showed this huge angle, and i have exactly the same problem (when i tighten up my knee it gets in a straight line and when i relax it gets way outside and makes this angle) along with the little tibial varum. I also play sports. Do I have to do something with this and try to straighten this with exercises?
Very successful. Thank you but for how long we have to slow down if we are a professional players sir ?
This is pain limiting so just decreasing playing time can be helpful. A patella tendon strap can also offer some relief.
I got it when I was a kid and I'm 55 now and it still hurts like heck today. The bump sticks out ALOT farther than my knee. I had shin splints all the time too. I can't today kneel on that knee. I played Football, Baseball, Track and Basketball.

I do still play basketball every now & then but also I boxing regularly. Can someone please help?!
This is a great and thorough evaluation! But, I was curious as to the reason why you didn't address flexibility of her hamstrings, IT band or activation of glute. medius in the management process. She is still a growing athlete who could see improvements with pain especially with patella femoral issues as you mentioned. Thank you!
Hi Flora, I may not have mentioned it in the video but we kicked this young ladies butt with everything you mentioned. She did very well. I always try to take the patient into consideration when I video them. I don't have the spurs it just hurts at the bottom of my knee. I'm guessing it's from overuse?

@@OrthoEvalPal I play rugby but I got it after playing soccer and being inactive after such a long time. I can't do my proper fitness I need to it's really frustrating, will be waiting thank you!
Im 40 and have all the symptoms in my left knee except for it being tender to the touch. In fact the pain goes away with pressure. When I apply pressure directly on the tibial tuberosity all the pain goes away, especially after icing. I press my knee into the sharp corner of the counter or table every so often throughout the day.
Probably not OS causing your pain. Especially at 40
I have it since I was about 12. Did a lot of sports at that time. The orthopedist advised against any sport or stuff as jumping etc. Wore knee brace all the time, didn't do any sports. At 30, I can't kneel properly, it still hurts often, at night I have some weird spasms... One doctor advised operation after I reached 21, the other said it would be for nothing if they operate. I noticed I'm limping with my left leg for a few years now (the bump is big on my left, on the right not so much). Also had problems since 16 when I would rotate my knee too much to the side it would pop out. My doctor said if I don't come to the ER because of this then it's not that serious/bad that's why she wouldn't operate.
Any advice on that or how to proceed?
Amazing explanation and great professional. I had OSL as a teenager and it has come back this year (32 y.o.) It has always been the left knee only. I play tennis 3-4 times a week and I've stopped for a month now since the pain was increasing little by little. It's getting better but I'm afraid that if I play again it will come back. Any advice apart from strengthening and stretching leg muscles? Thanks
Hi Carlos,
Great question! It is not likely that you have OS at this age. The "bump" on the front of your knee could get very easily aggravated by putting pressure on it. There are many other sources of anterior knee pain. You could have tendinitis/tendinopathy, a meniscus tear or a kneecap tracking issue. I would start back slowly but if it starts up again, you should seek out the help of someone in the orthopedic realm. Proper diagnosis=proper treatment=getting better. Best of luck!!
Paul

Hi, what special tests do you recommend for OSD? :)
Hi Ruth, there is no one special test for it. The bump and tenderness to touch give it away.
For me I just hit the Osgood shlatters to numb it up. I know it’s bad but it stops it from hurting for short periods so I usually do it before basketball games or practice. It hurts like hell but I don’t feel anything for a little after.
Hello, Ive had OSD since July 2019 (junior in HS) and still have it now as almost a sophomore in college. I am a long distance runner and I get pain from OSD, shin splints, and calf pain so much and it limits me in so many ways. I grew from 5'0 to 6'0 in high school so I think its a result of that, but it hasn't gone away. Can I still train how I want to train and will it ever go away?
Oh me too, same problem with you
I am 25 now and I had Osgoods as a teenager. My knee pain has never really gotten better even after my growth stopped. What exercises would you advice me to do in order to become fully functional again? Over the year I have periodically tried to start playing sports again only to stop soon after because of the pain.
I used straps and braces to help.
y do i have bumps tho and i'm 13 and my coach for sports won't let me sit out even tho i have osgoodschlatter
If it is OSD then the bumps will probably be there for life. Also, you may not be sitting because the coach thinks you are good!
Hi, I'm 17 and I had Osgood Schlatter on my right knee for about 3 years now. I still have the bump but it doesn't hurt anymore (unless I hit it). I can do squats, jump and run pretty easily, but I still can't bend my right leg all the way as I can do with my left leg, I can't kneel without moving my right leg to the side. Any advice? Can I somehow fix this with some exercises or an operation?
I would recommend you start with a physical therapist for instruction on proper stretching.

Hi, I'm 23 and a few months ago noticed the same pain from osgood-schlatter's after doing heavy squats. I don't recall having it in my teens where I played soccer and ran track/cross country. I lifted heavy without issue all throughout college and never had an issue with it. I took a long hiatus (COVID) and began lifting again, just for OS to come up. I've been told from the doctor that I've been seeing to treat it like you would patellar tendonitis in PT, and I've been thinking of getting a set of knee sleeves for squats. Does this seem like a reasonable approach to treating the symptoms? Thanks.
Sorry to hijack the comment. You say the pain is from OS, however there are many causes and diagnoses of knee pain. Tendinopathy (as the PT you mentioned suggested) would be more likely than OS from the limited info you’ve given.
So I have this and for a few years there has been no pain . Is that because my bones are fully fused together now And there is no fragmentation?anyway I wanted to know if there would be any point doing surgery to see if it will improve mechanical performance cause I do sports and want to maximise my performance
Not unless the pain is impairing your performance.
I have been feeling pain for two months in my knee that increases when I kick the ball or when I try to raise my leg while lying on the bed and today I saw a bulge below the knee at the beginning of the calf bone, a slight swelling and not very hard and not in the middle of the calf bone, but it is slightly tilted to the left and is located below the knee And when I was pressing on the kneecap I felt pain
Is this osgood schlatter disease??
Very hard to tell without seeing you
I've been suffering from this disease for about a year and haven't seen a doctor. I'm 22 years old and because of this shit I can't play football properly anymore. Do you have any tips for me ، besides going to the doctor, which I will finally do soon?
Hey, thnx for the vid. I’m a baseball player and golf player. Do you think I can still play normally?
Would it do permanent damage to my knee? I had is good schatter for 6 months already
hi ! I have been diagnosed with Osgood Schlatters on my right knee for around 2 years and I used to be able to do 30 one leg squats on that leg but not anymore as 1- it is too painful at the bump and 2 - it feels like my ligament over my knee just doesn't work. I am a mogul skier and runner and it is very annoying at testing days when I can do heaps of squats on my left leg but I cant go down low on my right at all. It is very painful after and obviously during activity and my Achilles are quite flexible.
ive also always had some knee and foot problems but this one has lasted the longest and I have over extended legs
Hi Kareema, Yes OSD can be very debilitating. You may need to take some time off and let it really settle down. Have you tried a patella tendon strap?
@@OrthoEvalPal I'm not sure but ill try ! thankyou :)
It gets better ❤️ I was diagnosed when I was maybe 10 or 11 and I have it in both of my knees. My soccer season was over and it took a LONG time for the pain to go away on its own. I used to have pain all the time, then it was just while I was active, then it was only sore occasionally during or after activity and that has not changed and I’m now I’m 27. Please know that the bumps are permanent unless you have them surgically removed. Being on your knees for any reason like cleaning or kneeling will ALWAYS be uncomfortable.
I run cross country and track and recently with my training I've noticed pain in the bump is it possible to continue training at high volumes without destroying my leg?
Osgood Schlatter should not damage your legs permanently. The key to Osgood Schlatter is to control the pain. I have it and I do Cross Country and Soccer. I also run up to 25 miles a week. I usually ice my legs before sports and activities but really you can play through the pain because it will not damage your legs long term. If you are feeling pain though, don’t ignore it. Take Advil or Ice it. I also recommend a menthol ice gel to rub on your legs. Hope this helps anybody😎👍

would you complete a full assessment like ROM and MMT?
Yes, absolutely. I try to keep the videos to just the "meat and potatoes" so patients don't have to wait too long and watchers don't get bored listening to me. good question
Yo I got a question idk if you can answer but. I’ve had osgood schlaughters for 1 to 2 years now but it finally went away and I’m only 13. I still have the bump but it doesn’t hurt that much anymore because I been playing basketball and stuff. Anyways my question is can I still grow taller? I’m only 5,6😥.
Your growth has slowed but you may gain still but at a much slower rate.
How did you recover from it? Is there any help please?
should i get a chorozone shot
Hi Paul, my daughter has these she is 9 played soccer, basketball and Jiu - jitsu. I need to know what's best exercise for her age. Is it safe to still play what she love?
Hi Cassi and Morgan, This is a pain limiting problem. There are no real great exercises for this. This is an overuse problem and growth plate issue. If your daughter doesn't want to stop sports she should at least protect the area with knee pads to prevent trauma. In the long run she probably will have a hard time kneeling on hard surfaces because the bump will become prominent and sharp.
@@OrthoEvalPal Thank you for your quick response. - HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
I have gone to three different specialist and gotten three different opinions, apart from the icing which is normal treatment for any inflammation I'm starting to think doctors them selves are not to sure about this disease....if it even is a disease, one doctor told me it's a disease other two told me it's just an over use situation wish obviously wouldn't be a disease at all 🤷♂️
They call it a disease but I try not to tell patient that right away to not scare them. It does come from overuse at a young age.
Is it curable?
One doctor told me to ice for a week and she should be good to go, that did not work, the other doctor told me to rest her and once she's done growing the pain will go away, not the bump that will not go away told by all three doctors, and the third doctor said this will be a pain that will come and go the rest of her life 🤦♂️
@@hardworkgetsbuckets8797 usually the pain settles once the growth plate closes and a residual bump is left.

I definitely have this.. big protrusion under my left knee. Been doing parkour and tricking all my life. But I remember a specific soccer episode as a teen in school where i turned my leg while my foot kept in place, always thought that might have triggered it. Wierdly, maybe, I feel the most pain when doing the gearshifting while driving.
Usually an injury does not cause this. It is progressive with lots of quad use. I think you my have an underlying knee injury.
Yep my OSD comes when i drive long distance for long period over 30 mins... I have short legs and and reaching for the gas pedal must be putting strain on the tendon/OSD.
Does that put her at a high risk for patellar dislocation? Increased Q angle.
Yes. For sure. We had 3 patella dislocations at the same time and they all had higher then average Q-angles.
I started running recently and today had my longest distance run yet and after I finished I felt pain under my left kneecap, in the tibial tubercle. I'm 26 and have never felt pain in my knees until today after that run. I also *think* I have flat feet.
What do you recommend?
