1.) The Doctor's name is Dr Abraham Verghese. He's a General Internist who works at Stanford. He also has a fabulous TED talk on the value of the physical exam. I highly recommend it. 2.) Re: the unprovoked reflex at 4:27 in this video, the gentleman being examined is still a "simulated patient", which means he's been hired to play the part. Consequently, there will be acting. But whether the hammer hit his patellar tendon or not, he's still performing the exam correctly - swinging the hammer correctly, and aiming it at the right spot.
No need 2 watch. Doctors haven't done physical exams in 20 years. Its 3-5 min and your out of there. Its about patient volume now. If I watch his TED talk it will only exaggerate what is missing.
@@dougspizman6751 It varies in your doctor's choice. And your doctor's specialty. And depends if you're in the clinic or hospital setting. Believe it or not there are still good doctors.

sono andato molto bene in tutto il test, ho fatto 0.200 nel pulsante e 0.166 nel suono (14 anni) e anche se sono andato malissimo nei colori mi sono divertito e mi sento più sicuro di me, grazie, bel video
How do I mean, what? The "people-pleaser" bit? Because it looks like he made a reflex action without any contact. Doing it for appearances and so the doctor "doesn't get upset." People-pleaser.
I'm sure the physician isn't a chump... however it would have been nice if the guy on the table 0:40 wouldn't a been such a cheating faker face~! How many other reflexes did he accentuate? I knew there was something funny about that reflex, but I didn't pause the video to analyze it. Peace.
Rotcod Nonsense, though relished it may be, has no place when with the MD. Also: I think Neil Degrasse Tyson dispelled with zombie nonsense once and for all on the Daily Show. I invite you to find it for yourself.
Yep, it looked awkward so I had to slow down the video to see. Seems like his patient was instructed to fake all the reflexes. Fail communication between the two.
Yes, I think that might have been the case. Even though these contractions are primarily involuntary, they provoke some inner instinct that makes us uncomfortable, and we don't want to feel that again. After all, our reflexes exist to protect us, and nobody gets protected if no harm is detected. So the reflexes might automate without physical, but emotional (fear) stimuli.
Could you tell me what the innervation is for the Radius Periost reflex, i know its C5- C6 but not the actual nerve like N. medianus. and the footsole reflex? The one that you move a sharp object on the lateral side of the bodem of the foot to the small toe. But for the rest a very good video THX!!!!
Can someone explain why the brachioradialis test seems to evoke motion at the wrist rather than the elbow, when brachioradialis is an elbow flexor and does not cross the wrist...?
doc i just had a reflex test by a orthopedic doctor my kness didnt bump he hit me few times ,what do you think any never damage.i live ur video by the way ,,
One thing of note. A doctor must be proficient in being able to elicit reflexes. It is never appropriate to say I'm no good at it, I just can't get them, and so forth. A doctor must be able to see the reflexes in all patients other than those who simply do not have those reflexes for one reason or another.
I agree. I had a Doctor do that with me on two different occations when i had a stroke this year at 32 saying oh i am not good at the reflexes or i do not have a hammer i am not good at them anyway i can just slap and see if we get anything!! With a stroke !! In neurology ! Can you imagine ! I am a senior nurse and perform them better ! I am still shocked about this.

any double vision?
Its a shame hes not wearing a navy suit for war

Hold on. 4:27 - he doesn't even seem to make contact? that's some reflex.

An awesome demonstration on deep tendon reflexes.
Hey the patient here looks like one of the docs in the other Standford25 videos!!
Note: Deep tendon reflexes are still present in zombies.
Also present in garden gnomes
They should disable comments because of nonsense like this.
(singing) A little nonsense now and then, is relished by the wisest men.
Rotcod Nonsense, though relished it may be, has no place when with the MD.

Barba Ro Wow. Are you already an MD? I wouldn't go to you. Ever. Docs that think like you suck.
we think you're really skilled at this!
What is the difference between tapping directy on the tendon and tapping over the examiner's thumb?
Tapping over the thumb helps you feel for contraction in case the reflex is diminished or trace and you can’t visibly see it well.
They didn't do that right; neither the doctor nor the patient got red in the face.
Because this is only reflexes and not strengh.
r/whooooosh for both of you some people don’t understand a fucking joke
TimeLocked 13 I’m pretty sure both of them got the joke lol
I haven't seen one "Navy Suit for War". Disappointing...
4:27 Is it my impression or the patient delivered a contraction without actually being hit by the hammer?
Rodrigo Ferreira yes, I see that. The knee was not hit, yet there was a reflex.
Or the hit was really light,
Yep, it looked awkward so I had to slow down the video to see. Seems like his patient was instructed to fake all the reflexes. Fail communication between the two.

That's not brachioradialis, which does not act on the wrist (other than to neutralize supination or pronation). Brachioradialis flexes the elbow.
