  • Guide to doing your first motorcycle track day | KNOX
    So you are looking to do your first motorcycle track day. Having recently been through this process myself, I put some thoughts and tips down on how to do a motorcycle track day that I have learned during the process and thought would help budding motorcycle track day riders from my own point of view. Often, pieces such as these are written by experienced motorcycle track day riders who may overlook certain elements facing the new track day rider, so hopefully, you’ll find this guide down to earth and covering most important things.
    Breaking the guide into 3 sections, we cover some important items to consider during your track day preparation, considerations during the track day, and then finally what happens after the big day.
    The video breaks down into:
    0:00 - Intro
    1:17 - Preparation
    13:48 - During your Day
    19:47 - The Aftermath!
    For both track days this Summer, we were at the amazing Oulton Park in England, one day with No Limits, one day with MSV Track days, both excellent providers and ran the day like clockwork. For some reason the No Limits day seemed to attract faster and more committed riders, with MSV organised day being a bit more of a mixed bag with a few more road going motorcycles on it.
    I was riding the amazing Suzuki GSXR 750, an incredible machine that comes into its own on track! Although with the baffle in, it certainly doesn’t run right (something Ill be fixing shortly). I was also running Dunlop Sportsmart 3 tyres, an incredible choice for road and the odd track day riding. We’ll also be putting out a review on this tyre soon. Geoff was riding the Kawasaki Z1000sx, while a sports touring bike, he can still hustle it round Oulton Park, and Olly was on his tyre shredding Yamaha R1.

    Thanks for the tips and sharing your experience. I'm in the middle of getting gears for first track day. The tyre choice and no warmer for novice riders definitely helped, I'm planning to ride the bike as it is everyday anyway. Not quite sure about the noise levels, I checked a few track day offerings near me (I'm in Melbourne, AUS), none of them mentioned about noise limit, so guess it's not an issue down under, but will double check, don't want last minute surprises. They are more strict on leaks, especially fork seals, brakes and other fluids. A rider from my rider group was denied track access on a DUCATI riding day at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit (an iconic MotoGP circuit) because of a fork seal leak on the spot, very very disappointed.

    Great job. Too many people try to use the street as a race track and for learning to go fast. They have no idea how much better and safer a track day is for learning. Plus a track day is cheaper than a speeding ticket.

    Great video. Planning for my first track day in 6 months. I've ridden 7000 miles in the past two short riding seasons we have here in Michigan. There is a great track within earshot of my house and for years I could here the bikes revving out and it always made me jealous. Can't wait!

    Excellent vid!! Do you find you have a left turn bs right right turn body position preference?
    Looking at the approx 17 min point (the angle camera behind you seat)….Your BP on left corner
    looks much better than right (seemed crossed up on r.t. and left arm not as extended.
    Reason I ask this I personally feel more confident on l.t. vs r.t as well and wondering how you are dealing with it?
    Thanks in advance and great stuff!

    • @KnoxArmour
      @KnoxArmour  2 года назад

      Haha, please dont judge my body position too much on this video, from my first couple of track days. Getting much better now though, but still pretty stiff. In the video with John McGuiness ruclips.net/video/n3Mt1jkD72c/видео.html, he talks to me about it too and Ive still clearly got much to learn. That being said, Im much faster and safer track rider now after a bit of practice. Thanks, Aaron KNOX

    Any tracks you could recommend located near London? Or track companies?? I own a 2015 R1 but have never tracked it, I’ve been riding for 2 years (don’t judge me lol). I’m toying with the idea of buying a £3k Gixxer incase the worst happened (I would cry if I dropped the R1) would you say this was a sensible route? Cheers

    • @KnoxArmour
      @KnoxArmour  3 года назад +1

      Hi! Definitely, you are quite lucky around London as there is a few close by... 1 being Brands Hatch (your closest) which is a great track, then Lydden Hill (about 1.5 hours), and Silverstone (not that far)...
      Reference bike, its entirely up to you? I would say that Olly (who is riding the R1 in this video) was quite worried about taking his bike on track too, but in the end really enjoyed it. As long as you ride within your comfort zone in a smooth and progressive manner and ride with good etiquette on good lines, you'll be fine. Buying another bike to try something you dont know you'll enjoy seems a bit of a push. Other than that, there are companies that offer track day insurance and for about £200 you can get track day insurance to cover your motorcycle. - this might be a good option for you.
      Hope that helps, Aaron KNOX

    I really want to do a track day but i do fear ill fuck something up or look a tit, i have never even ridden on the road with another biker so it is quote intimidating

    • @KnoxArmour
      @KnoxArmour  3 года назад +1

      It is a little intimidating no doubt with other riders taking things far too seriously! But hopefully as per the guide, everyone starts somewhere and riding within your comfort zone and smoothly, building your speed consistently and safely, will ensure you enjoy it! Aaron KNOX

    Best thing to remember that it’s a trackday, not a race - enjoy the experience and don’t push beyond your limits. The experienced clowns need to stay out of lower groups

    I have the same bike and want to do brands gp, the db level is 101db on static test are you testing at 5.5k rpm or 7k rpm for the 750cc k8 got a racefit exhaust with de-cat and just ordered a wrapped baffle. Am i right in thinking a 750cc is tested at 7k rpm. Also did I see you wire the exhaust servo open or closed?
    Love the videos mate 👍

    • @KnoxArmour
      @KnoxArmour  Год назад +1

      Thanks Alistair. Yes, testing at 7,000rpm. A good trick my mate does is cover up his 600 logo and just tell the marshal its a 1000 so he only has to rev it to 5,000. 😂 Aaron KNOX
