      @mackielunkey2205 4 года назад +396

      @@DeepScreenAnalysis I think that Michael Hogan meant by Monique humanizing Mary, is that Mary feels like a legitimate person in severe denial over what happened to Precious, and refuses to accept responsibility like a real parent. There are people like her.

    • @ratbastian
      @ratbastian 4 года назад +171

      @@mackielunkey2205 Well said. What Mary did is deplorable but this movie is also about the reality of women who exist like this. They are as much a product of abuse as the one they abuse. It doesn't make it okay, but it's the truth. The cycle of abuse is hard to break, and that's why it's the emotional core of the whole film. We have hope that Precious can break the cycle (the second part is unfortunately sad but that's another story).

    Everyones commenting about how precious is finally free is missing the whole point of the entire story. She isnt free, she dies because of her parents actions, a horrible death at that. The sequel goes on to explain that her son became an abuser. The point of this is not to feel good about this but to see how its systemic, and generational. How one thing leads to another, that mary was abused, and in turn abused, and even though precious put a stop to that abuse it didnt just end. It continued because of what preciouss parents did, and it jumped over to her own children, its just so engrained

      Some say that this character embodied her actual experience growing up...that's why she was so convincing.
      However in the end, Monique didn't play her cards right. She refused to go to Cannes at her husband's insistence that she stay home with the family.

    This ending gives me goosebumps. Mary says "sorry" but it's far too little, too late. She was a monster, through and through, but by the end, you realize she's broken and mentally ill, probably because she also was abused by her own mother. And then at the end, Precious earns her freedom. That smile she wears at the end, it just gets to me. Infected with HIV, but a loving parent determined to take care of her kids in a hopefully better future.

    I wasnt abused by a parent, but I was abused by a partner -my children's father. I was with him from when I was 17 year's old all the way until I was 30 years old, when I finally left him. I resonate with the ending, when Precious is smiling and finally finds love within herself because of her children and because of the teacher that believed in her. When I finally left, I was so happy and just wanted to spend as much time as I could with the love I had had in front of me this whole time, my sons. Now, I am 41 years old and I teach at my local community college, and I am vocal recording artist, as well as Spoken word artist. My oldest son lives in Germany, as he joined the Air Force, my middle son is about to transfer to Humbold State, and my youngest son is working on music. There is something about finally finding love for yourself that is absolutely unforgettable.

      +ROCKY GRANDE Yes, in the story he has already died of AIDS. Even so, though, I thought of the same thing: Mary would still be an accomplice/material witness to multiple felonies -- she stood there watching while her boyfriend raped her daughter. I don't know the statute of limitations on something like that, but Abdul is still an infant here, and little Mongo is -- what, maybe two or three years old at most? These cases would still be active. (Or is there a "confidentiality clause" that allows professionals like social works to NOT go to the authorities in a case like this?)

    One thing I’ve noticed about this movie is that most of Precious’ dialogue for the first half of the movie is incredibly hard to understand but as she does better in school her speech improves. It’s a nice nod to the book since the first half is intentionally poorly written because it’s from her perspective.

    This movie. My mom went through it, she was abused, raped, everything that's meant to break you. She had me at 19, they told her she wasn't going to amount to shit and that she'd fail as a mother like hers. When i was 15, my grandma reached out, told her she was sorry, and to make sure she watched her babies. I'll never forget that day, my mom deserved an apology, an opportunity to rip into her mother, instead she just hugged her and told her i forgave you a long time ago, it's ok to forgive yourself. For all those precious women out there who are fighting for their children and for themselves, god bless you
