When Monique said “I did what my mama told me I was supposed to do with my child” at 4:22 that spoke in volumes. Yes, exactly. Especially if it was happening when Precious was 3, it is Mary’s responsibility as her parent to protect her daughter. And she will never admit any fault or wrongdoing because she is plagued by delusion and jealousy. Precious realized in that meeting that Mary will never get better and just has to abandon her to survive.
"He told me to shut my fat black ass up and that this was good for her" "And what did you do?" "I shut my fat ass up" I'm sorry but that was simultaneously sad and funny. The way she said it.
2degucitas This bitch of a mother apparently does not want to take responsibility for their own selfish, cowardly actions that she was the one who let it happen instead of standing up to the man to protect her daughter and throw him out. How dare she say such horrible things to the one she brought into this world and turn her back on her like that! How dare she blame her little girl for her man leaving after what he did and what she failed to do, refusing to admit fault or wrongdoing for it! Bitches like that shouldn't be allowed to breed.
I know what you mean but I think you meant to say “you know she did a good job when you wanted to beat the fuck out of her” not her character. Your suppose to want to do that to her character
This scene always gives me chills. Mad respect for social workers who are exposed to this everyday and still stay committed to their jobs. How could this not affect your personal life?
I work in social services. And you have no idea how common this sort of stuff is. And we as the social worker have to just...sit there. We have to listen. We have to take notes. We have to not show any judgment. That’s why social work has a constant revolving door. Because of stuff like this. Mariah did a great job of showing how sometimes our frustration and disgust comes out, but we still have to keep our composure and compassion even though we’re burned out.
Kudos to y'all cause I couldn't do it. I can't even watch this movie again and it's just a portrayal. Can't imagine experiencing that on my job on the regular.
I really wanted to become a social worker but I knew I wouldn't be able to handle these things. I get very emotional and wouldn't have been able to keep my composure at all. Props to you ♡
6:41 you can tell Mariah was breaking character at this moment. When she turned towards precious, you can see the disbelief and sadness she feels for precious and how cold-hearted Monique’s character really was for saying that. “It’s this bitch’s fault!” really hurt on so many levels.
When she broke character was what worked in her favor. It actually made her seem a better actress then what she is, and I don’t mean that with any disrespect to Mariah as she’s a phenomenal talent, but an actress she’s not. She put in a great performance in this movie regardless of what fueled that performance to be that way. That’s why it isn’t a diss, because I respect her. Just an observation.
Probably so, because Monique went way off script for this scene. What she said isn’t in the screenplay so she was just going with it and it probably shocked Mariah a bit.
Yep. And to compound it, she's uneducated and emotionally immature, which is why she's violent and illogical. Her LEGITIMATE reaction to her boyfriend molesting and twice impregnating her own daughter...is to blame the daughter. And I've seen a lot of women with this really pretzel'd mentality. It's sad, but it's dangerous when children suffer as a result.
the social worker crying though ugh gag me with a spoon... 🤢🤮 not one tear should be shed for this despicable woman... her wires are all crossed...feel no pity for a woman who justifies sex with her own offspring......
@CoilsFit4aQueen thats true... i just noticed she started to cry right when the mother does the poor me part about who would make me feel good at night what about me..right at that moment she started tearing up... i at first thought she had felt pity for her cuz she was saying she was just so lonely... not an excuse at all .. she knew what she was doing thats why she was in the bed with both of them
I really admire Monique for even doing this scene, since her own brother sexually abused her for years starting when she was 7, this must have been specially hard for her.

Monique is legit one of the best actresses I've ever seen - and she does not get the credit, hype, pay and love that she deserves. This scene is just overflowing with power, and it's Monique that creates it and carries it. Damn, woman, you're amazing!
And what’s really door is she went off script. These lines are not in the screenplay. The degree line, you got this bitch looking at me, who was gon make me feel good, etc wasn’t even in the script
It's a shame did didn't hire a real agent and learn the biz because there was so many roles for her that could have happen or she could of wrote herself maybe. Waste of talent
"And that's why I hated her. Because my man who was supposed to be loving me, who was supposed to be making love to me, was f*cking my baby." This line is so extremely disturbing.
I really don't want to defend the mother in this situation (it is disgusting that she let that happen) but she was manipulated too and taken advantage of too by her husband. She had mantal problems and was not right in the head.
That’s insane. She had a grown man touching her baby and she took the man’s side instead of that innocent baby’s. I knew that was the reason she hated precious all along since the mom is a narcissistic bitch but hearing it like that is shocking for any mother. It is natural for us to protect our children and to hate a such a vulnerable tiny innocence in that situation is astounding.
I really hate that this is a real life problem with the black community. Your father leaves the moment your born, your mom blaming it on you, multiple kids form different parents but all siblings it just sucks
This movie scared me as a child. Now, as a mother, I’m infuriated that this actually goes on in some people’s households. Who tf picks a man over their own child???
*When your man is good in bed, it’s a matter of life or death; if your child is getting in the way of that, you must have them pay for their selfishness.*
A cheating man married a friend of mine, she was the toughest chick out of us and she was reduced to an insecure clingy crying mess. She was so pretty, had the Indian princess thing going for her and his actions made her so insecure it was difficult to watch. She wouldn't listen to any of us about leaving him, or getting therapy.
I remember watching this movie few years back and being so severely traumatized just by the scenes, I can’t imagine the trauma the children feel when they endure this pain in reality. The actors all deserve a standing ovation for their impeccable performances!
with all due respect, if the scenes severely traumatized you, did you have nightmares about the scenes? did you have flashbacks about them? did it cripple your ability to do what you normally do on a daily basis? did it make you question your trust in people or your environment? if no, you were not traumatized by the scenes. you can however, be deeply affected, moved, empathetic, sad, etc., i'm not trying to single you out or attack you, but i'm so tired of people using the word traumatized so freely as it waters the definition down. people, like Precious, other victims of this disgusting, unbearable, life altering abuse are the ones who are truly, traumatized.
@@gemmarichardson2020 I'm "traumatized" by you being so extra. We know what they meant when they made this comment. Didn't say this movie actually turned them into Precious.

4:46...that look on Mariah's face. Sometimes, the best acting is non verbal. She emoted the lunacy of the evil woman that was sitting across from her perfectly. It's a mix of shock, revulsion, and disbelief.
I know from experience. If they use vulgar language towards their children, I guarantee they hit their children in frustration when no one is looking. It took my White 6th grade teacher to speak up for me. 5 Black uncles and 4 Black aunties were too scared of losing a relationship with my mother. This is Black families in 2021 for ya.
*You never know- that child is probably spoiled beyond belief and travels the world every weekend and has a trust fund of hundreds of thousands of dollars.*
My mom cussed at us here & there our entire life & she never beat or abused us & she would have killed anyone if they ever tried!! So I don’t think because you hear someone swear you can automatically assume something is going on at home.
Phenomenal acting is when the Actress can portray a villainous character so well that you absolutely hate them, and then when they get into scenes like this, you absolutely feel for them. To make an audience hate a " bad Guy" so much and then cry for them when they are telling their truth, THAT is award winning! Well-deserved Mo! We are with you!
@Rafaela Santos Of course they would care, even if they're horrible, they mostly behave that way because of childhood trauma, she was most likely raised like that and abused too. What people like that really need is counseling and treatment until they understand how to treat people right. 💜
@Rafaela Santos Yeah, I knew what they meant. They still have feelings, and they mostly do that because of childhood trauma and abuse, so people like that wouldn't know any better. So doing things like that don't make you any better. 💜
Mo'Nique was going in and out of two character personalities based on her dialect. It's like on one hand she was blaming Precious for her man leaving her which is her dominant trait and on the other hand, it was like full of regret and shame.
@6:49 that stutter is pure acting. They always say the best actors don't act like the characters but put themselves in the place of the characters. Someone give Monique another role please. A shame things have gone awry. This scene gives me chills👏🏾
Lola Johnson the stuttering just took the acting up another level. I pray Monique gets another chance in Hollywood. Just a brilliant actress all around.
Jordan Washington Scorpio’s are notorious for possessing certain traits Hyper-sexual, liars, jealous etc.... So she made a very pathetic attempt to manipulate Ms. Weis and get her to doubt in Precious’s character. Very well written and extremely well acted.
She was so surprised at their acting that it touched her and she started crying. She couldn't help it. The director loved the genuine reaction from her that he kept it in the movie =)

That scene is the most shocking, raw, disturbing and highly emotional piece of drama ever shown in cinema. The acting and delivery of Monique and Mariah combined with Gabourey's hopeless reaction upon what she's hearing is too devastatingly real. Mariah wiped away a real tear in this scene. The mental challenge to occupy and play these characters to this depth and filth is truly astonishing and is a testament to all 3 actors. The bar they set is too high. Meryl WISHED she could reach those heights. Mariah needs to do more serious roles. Monique and Gabourey should be doing more films also.
Just imagine the countless of youth who have to figure their way through shit like this. Kids who try to become functioning adults with these type of demons in their past. Some kids don’t make it and frankly how could you expect anyone to be sane after living like this for a day. This movie exhausted me as well and fucked my head up because this is life for some. Deeply troubling.
To be fair if you have multiple children I can see a parent getting some of their birth dates mixed up, but in this case it's a huge red flag that she had no clue about her only child's birthday.
Thank god, I had a normal, boring, dull, ordinary life...with loving, caring parents, and a family that wanted only happiness for me! This happens everywhere... I was in my 20s before I realized people had such warped values. I guess I was protected from such pain and agony.. Bless my sainted parents, the world needs more like them
This movie broke me because these type of situations have been going on in my family for decades. It mainly hurt me because my mom experienced a lot of stuff precious went through. Abuse, neglect, and being lost. It’s sad that this isn’t truly fiction because it happens all over the world, I pray for those experiencing this. Right now my mom is doing better and is with someone who loves her, she is a great mom. The best thing she did was leave her family. I’m grateful she did because it saved her life.
Me too, I was ready to beat her ass on sight. But I think she said she "channeled" the role from when she was abused by her brother when she was younger
I just noticed that at the beginning of the movie, Precious sees a skinny blonde girl when she looked in the mirror but this time she only sees herself because she’s more confident about herself now.
This scene has such brilliant writing. Monique's character rambles on and on about such inconsequential things, but in a way that makes it clear she thinks she's getting to a point, even though you know she's just stalling. Like describing the pillow she laid Precious on in bed, or the random way she tries to explain that Precious was born in the summer, even though she can't even name which month and Precious has to correct her and it's a whole different time of year. The way she looks at Precious and says "You remember?" when she's talking about her birth... how would a child remember her birth? And then her description of the abuse is so horrifying. "She didn't scream or nothing." She was a /child/. Insane acting, insane writing.
A lot of what Monique says in this scene was not in the script. She was just going with it and it was way better than what was written for her to say. Much props to her
This movie tears me up so bad. I remember watching this with my mom during the time my step father was raping me everyday. She called the mother disgusting- “how can a mother leave her child.” Months later when I came forward with my abuse she called me manipulative and a liar. A few months ago she confessed to my sister that she knew about the abuse the entire time and even facilitated some situations just so she would “have someone to pay her bills.” I don’t talk to her anymore
This scene was especially hard to watch. I was abused growing up, and when I see a child who was abused or being abused, I want to take them to a better situation.

Yourself. You need to love yourself or all you look for is someone to fill that need (not to say that you don't still want to have a partner in life, but it's no longer the end all be all of your existence). Not to mention, does she really think that Carl loved her daughter by raping her?? Cuz that's not love in my book.
She wasn’t referring to her husband. When Mary says “who was supposed to love me?”, she’s referring to precious performing sexual acts on her. She’s saying she made precious do nasty things with her because precious made her man go away and she needed someone to make her feel good. It’s totally fucked. Mary let her be abused sexually and then abused precious sexually herself
"Who was gonna love me? Who was gonna make ME feel good?" Sadly, this phrase is repeated in social services offices all over the country every day by mothers trying to justify why they stayed with a man who was hurting their children. It's sad that, especially in low income communities, there is a culture of women basing their self worth in whether or not they have a man. Even at the expense if their children's safety. O
Krystal Dispatch Bettty Mcginty Carter that has nothing to do with socio economics. That is such a tired ass stereotype. Do you not think this goes on in middle and upper class households? I still can't watch this scene without tearing up. MoNique and Mariah gave it their all with this one. My heart aches for Precious and the individual abuse that she endured by the hands of her parents. Parents are supposed to be a child's fiercest protectors, and the fact that she never got that protection is gut wrenching.
*Precious is the reason why that girl was all beat up. Did you forget the scene where she violently slammed her against the trash cans/brick wall because she asked if she could hold her baby?*
I can relate. I was adopted as a baby by a sadistic woman. I was mentally and sexually abused by her. I told people about it, but only three tried to do anything. No she was never prosecuted, but it made me a stronger person.

The amount of shame and lack of accountability Precious' mom feels is akin to what many abusers use to validate themselves. Monique played the hell out of this role, and her blame shifting and projection are spot on.
I never watched the whole scene. I always paused in the middle. I can't watch this video. It is too much for me. When ever I hear a child been sexual abused I die a little more inside. It is the absolutely most horrible and scariest thing in this world for me. For a long time I didn't want to believe that there are women like her who would do this to their own child!
Agree. To sexually abuse an infant is probably the most abhorrent crime a human can commit. Movies like this one makes us face that uncomfortable reality.

The thing is, it does. When my nephew was being abused this way the social worker was so shaken it caused her to have a breakdown.

Salute you guys are overworked and under payed. Thanks for you hard work 🌹🌹🌹🌹
I really wanted to become a social worker but I knew I wouldn't be able to handle these things. I get very emotional and wouldn't have been able to keep my composure at all. Props to you ♡
I too commend you. Because ALL OF THIS makes me want to regurgitate.

6:40
She was in character. Why can't you let her be great? 😁
Probably so, because Monique went way off script for this scene. What she said isn’t in the screenplay so she was just going with it and it probably shocked Mariah a bit.
The abuser always tries to get off topic to cause confusion. And will never admit anything!
veronicamamiful Typical Narcissists!
Yep. And to compound it, she's uneducated and emotionally immature, which is why she's violent and illogical. Her LEGITIMATE reaction to her boyfriend molesting and twice impregnating her own daughter...is to blame the daughter. And I've seen a lot of women with this really pretzel'd mentality. with all due respect, if the scenes severely traumatized you, did you have nightmares about the scenes? did you have flashbacks about them? did it cripple your ability to do what you normally do on a daily basis? did it make you question your trust in people or your environment? if no, you were not traumatized by the scenes. you can however, be deeply affected, moved, empathetic, sad, etc., i'm not trying to single you out or attack you, but i'm so tired of people using the word traumatized so freely as it waters the definition down. people, like Precious, other victims of this disgusting, unbearable, life altering abuse are the ones who are truly, traumatized.

Mariah looks so real... In comparance to her booshee, top notch, princess self
Shemar Goins Damn straight!!!
She is a Queen!
Shemar Goins it’s spelled boujee* 🙂
RUclipsName it’s spelled a few different ways but it’s definitely not booshee.
I usually see it spelled "boujee"

The amount of shame and lack of accountability Precious' mom feels is akin to what many abusers use to validate themselves. I watched this as a child and had 0 notion behind these distortions until just a year ago after leaving a toxic relationship.
Juliana Marcelino Baus understandable
Agree. To sexually abuse an infant is probably the most abhorrent crime a human can commit. Movies like this one makes us face that uncomfortable reality.
I was raped and molested by my step dad
It's sad, it's ppl on RUclips that talks about molesting a child should be legal if they consent!!! I swear it's some sick mfkers in this world!!! I swear if anybody ever hurt my children in any kind of way. Their mother will be buying that black dress!!! And I'll do my bid with a smile on my face
I think I'm just dead. I'd listen to her & show no emotion. She "had a baby, & a man. Had to take care of both of them." That's sounds like you had two children... One was actually her child. Get rid of the other. And just ew. I've seen comments on yt about ppl having sex beside a baby. IDC if the baby doesn't know, I'd know. How do ppl even stay in the mood w/ innocence beside them? That's all kinds of wrong.
Monique and Mariah were INCREDIBLE in this scene. Monique really sold her distress and Mariah sold the emotional restraint.
I love the behind the scenes interview with the director, where he talks about directing Mariah during this scene. He wanted "Absolutely NO MAKE UP" on Mariah's character and he kept catching her sneaking and applying compact powder, lmfao. He naturally saw it. He says he was like, "come here" and he wiped her face gently and was like "bitch what's this?"
No way. Everyone gets a base.
LMAO 🤣😅😅😂
she looks so much better natural
@@bridgettebianchi9315 that's just what the director said on the commentary. Check it out for yourself. I'm sure there's things done for lighting but... I'm not an award winning director. So I take his word for it.
@@hopet7033 I totally agree. I enjoy seeing her natural and on her right side and not her dictating. So beautiful.
Monique explained that horror like it made perfect sense, and Mariah just raised those eyebrows, like a true office lady.
What a masterpiece!
The generational curse and the psychological damage is beyond me with this mother. Unresolved trauma repeating itself.
Ain't even know her ONLY child birthday 🤦🏽♀️😂
Sad.
Now who’s on drugs?? 😂
This is the scene that won her the Oscar!
I couldn't look at Monique the same for a hot minute because of this movie. She played the hell outta that role. Tremendous acting. 👏🏾
Mariah really needs to act more just saying
So that is mariah carey.😏😏

@jessica Cloud9 exactly the denial of this character is not even humorous as it not just ficton this happens in real life.
Same 😂😂😂😂
Mo'nique's performance in this scene was amazing... Her "tough" exterior shown by clothes, denial speech about drugs, nervous touching her clothes, calling Precious a liar & mrs. Weiss judgmental etc, all in all to blame the victim and most importantly get sympathy for herself instead of helping her daughter in time of need & preventing her husband to get in touch with her daughter
Her acting is too real. Very disturbing and scary. She deserved that Oscar.
She doesn’t get enough credit for her acting skills in this!!!
She won an Oscar. I think thats about as good as it gets. 🙄

She was 3 how what!? What's scary is that theirs mothers like this, that's truly disgusting you're blaming your 3 year old for "stealing" your man 🤢🤮
*She did steal her man. Did you not hear what she mentioned? She mentioned that Precious did steal him and made him go away because she let him have her - she didn’t scream, she didn’t cry, she didn’t fumble... she didn’t do nothing except lay there and let him have her.*
*Also, Precious had fantasies about her white math teacher getting rid of his wife and moving Precious in with him to Westchester. She was evidently a man thief that had no consideration for the wives/girlfriends of the men she was stealing - she even had a picture of him in her photo album.*
@@earlaweese she was 3. Get your victim blaming ass out of here.
@@calciumstealer2448Wow you were dumb enough to respond??
@@calciumstealer2448 *Dude, toddlers know what they’re doing. Precious is guilty. She knew that she liked it or she would’ve respectfully told her dad that she isn’t very interested in it and that it’s a considerate offer, but her mom is the one who deserves the sex. It could’ve just been handled maturely, but since toddlers like to be abusive and selfish, all of this mess got stirred up which ended up in her mother losing everything: her man, the welfare, and her two grandchildren. Precious ruined it all for her and tried to make it seem like she was raped. People that are raped scream for help and cry; Precious sat there and did absolutely nothing for YEARS. She wasn’t innocent.*
This was such an underrated movie. The acting all around was absolutely heartbreaking and phenomenal. Breaks my heart every time
“Who was going to love me?”,
Your children were going to love you, not some sinister man, period!!!
*Your child isn’t going to pound you like “WHAM WHAM WHAM” (like the great Brenda from Scary Movie once said) like your man would; Precious made the choices that she made and stole her mother’s man and her mother was fully aware that nobody else would love her big ass. People hate fat people (especially in NYC). Fat people are ignored, overlooked, and shamed when they take up a lot of space in public transportation in NYC.*
