I agree. The first time I saw this I made it through almost the whole scene without a sniffle. But when it showed him hugging uncle Phil in the background, slowly zooming in on the statue, that broke me.

This scene makes me cry every time. My parents divorced when I was 4 and I didn't see or hear from my dad again until I was 17. Fortunately I had an amazing Step-father that took me and my sister in and treated us as if we were his own children. He taught me everything I needed to know in life and when I was down and lost everything he was there to help me back up. He passed away in June this year from cancer and he is sorely missed. Pop I think about you everyday and if it wasn't for you I wouldn't be the man I am today. Thank you for all you taught me and showing me tough love when I needed it. You wasn't just some man my mom married. You took on a responsibility that wasn't yours and you did it with no questions asked. You were my father when you didn't have to be. I can only pray to be half the man that you were. I love you Pop.

Because of how legendary this scene is, especially on youtube, a really damn good scene earlier in the episode tends to get overlooked, which is when Uncle Phil is ranting about Lou and Will and Vivian haven't turned on him yet.

nothing ever is black and white though, there are valid reason not wanting to raise a kid, also if it was an accidental conception despite protection on all sides and the woman keeps it against the man's will he should be free to go and no judging on my side, his wish not to be a father was clear from start to finish and in the 21st century we have enough medical progress to not make it happen
@@ZetsubouZolo That is a more nuanced look at it, but for simplicity's sake we don't get much of an idea of any of that kind of stuff in the episode. All we know is Lou got scared, didn't feel ready to be a father, and bolted.
The thing is, Lou had options, he could have picked up the phone. He could have sat down and actually talked to his son about leaving instead of trying to bullshit him. But that's not what the story is about. It's about someone who SHOULD try harder for their family, and just won't, and sadly that DOES hit hard for a lot of people who know how that feels.

It is a shame that we live in a modern generation where people on the internet said *fatherless* as an insult. That phrase needs to be put down for good because these people never seen this scene before and it hits home for anyone that didn’t have a father like him.
One thing most people don’t talk about: the Actor playing Lou and his performance, he plays the deadbeat dad SO perfectly. You can see it all over his face that he is only concerned for himself and just wants everyone to go away and stop asking things of him, I get all of that just from his body language. Very powerful performance.
His name is Ben Vereen - he’s a luminary of American theatre (2 Tony nominations, 1 win) and has also received Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for his TV work as well…he is so subtle and emotive, it’s a masterclass every time he performs
More than that, it's obvious that Lou can tell Will isn't buying his excuse and responds by piling on further lies. Beyond being a deadbeat, he's particularly contemptible in that he has no intention of following up, but he's too insecure to leave Will unless he can (even if briefly) convince him that he's not abandoning him again. When he gets called by his first name, Lou tries to come up with something he can say to leave with as much ego intact as he can, but he gives up, retreating from the accusatory glare and overall discomfort in the air.
Vereen does an excellent job of portraying this, reacting to Smith's body language and tone.
Even his reaction after Will calls him Lou.

The fact that Phil didn't even hesitate to hug Will after he started breaking down really shows that he genuinely wanted to be a dad to Will. Like, "Fuck Lou. I'll give you the best life possible."

And when Will said, "You too, Lou," you can just see the look of regret washing over Lou's face. But he was a jerk through and through. Amazing acting. Well written script.

The sad part is so many people (myself included) didn't get to have a Dad or an uncle Phil. But, what I did have with this show. It showed me what I should've had and I'm grateful to know about that. Otherwise, I would'nt have known. Kids deserve a parent. If nothing else, they deserve to have a teacher of their own (a parent).

I think I remember hearing something about the actor portraying Will’s father in the scene. When the actor walked off the set after saying “it was good seeing you”, he broke down crying. He said that as a father himself, he could never imagine walking out on his own children. It goes to show how deeply emotional this scene is
I imagine the actor who played Will's father wanted to punch out the character he was playing, I know I would.

yep, it takes a toll. My father was an abusive alcoholic and told me that he wants nothing to do with me and hasn't spoken to me since I was 14. I'm 26 now. I made a lot of mistakes growing up. But it hurts deep, deep inside to hear your father tell you he never wants to speak to you again.

The guy playing Lou was struck deep too. IMDB said that once he got off screen, he started bawling as well. An IMDB post said one of his personal friends is a crew member on the show and said he is completely opposite than what we see here.
Will was looking for his father. However, he realizes that he already found him: Uncle Phil.
Uncle Phil was more of a father to will than Lou was. Which proves it takes more that blood to be a father
when I was younger I always mistook Uncle Phil for being Will’s real father. But Uncle Phil will always be Will’s father.

Uncle Phil is a man who deserves everyone’s respect. He’s tough and firm because that’s how deeply he cares about his family. And anyone who tries to hurt him will find him knocking on that person’s door.

Truth, yes my parents divorced when I was 9 yrs old, but one thing my father didn't do was disappear, to the point, I am his only child. He could've had other children, but he never saw the need for having multiple children with different women. So he stayed focused on me. I'm 29 now and still daddy's little girl. 'Im grown, but still a child'

I feel this scene. Never had my father for me, but because of that I always wanted to be there for my kids.
Every dude that grew up without a dad feels that pain. They may pretend they don't care but we know the truth. You see other dudes chilling with or talking about their dads and it's a gut punch.

At 3:44 you can hear a cast member in the background weep. That was definitely not scripted. This was the most powerful scene in any early 90's sitcom. It still makes me tear up.

It's comforting knowing they're both actors but it's still sad to think that there are probably lots of people going through the same thing.

When I was 14 years old, my father abandoned me and my mother. It was 1974. I literally ran after his car as he drove away, screaming and begging for him to come back. My mother had a nervous breakdown after he left. I lost both parents when he left. I'm 61 years old now, and I still remember that night. If I was queen of the world, I'd find a way to force dads to not break their children's hearts.
Shouldn't have watched this or read your post. I'm 54 sitting here trying not to cry. I watched the biggest, strongest, most gentle, loving Dad you could wish for die bit by bit, eaten away by cancer. He was just under 90lbs when he died. I was 14. Why is it some of the most horrible, evil people, I met live to be old, yet my parents both died in agony, both hard working, respectful, decent, loving people ?

Never happened guys, his father was very much apart of his life. He addresses this seen specifically in an interview about how he just got very into the role and felt real sympathy for people who go through this. It’s phenomenal acting.
Yeah, I think he said a close friend was going through it at that time and he was trying to capture his emotions and James Avery helped him.
Ppl have this narrative that when something sad happens in a sitcom it's for real and not acting. It's gotta be annoying for these ppl that have really honed their acting skills to get to that point.

This same thing happened to my dad. I only saw him cry about two things when I was a kid.
His sister dying and imagining a father figure in his life.
He told me he made a promise to my mother that he would never abandon us.
He always told me when I was little "just because people treat you bad, doesn't mean you have the right to treat others bad". Love you Dad!!!
For those who did not have a father in your life. This really hit home.
Same goes for when you have a father who's there but not present. A deadbeat who leaches off his children isn't much of an upgrade either.
