This and also them over exaggerating how good the product is is a huge red flag. Some of the things they try to sell us are really expensive. If a $40 lipstick or $50+ foundation is really as good as they claim it is, it better magically regenerate itself after using it, clean my brushes, and have a 10 year warranty on it so if it gets stolen, destroyed, or expires, I can get a free replacement.

I think “makeup education” (for lack of a better term) plays a huge role in this. I had this one palette that was my ride or die palette, and it cost maybe $10 on sale. I used this thing non stop. I thought it was the best palette on the planet. Best formula, best everything. Then it broke and died, so I went searching for another one. During that quest, I found other brands and other palettes, and realized what I had been using was utter garbage. But I didn’t know that at the time! I was an ignorant happy clam with this horrific palette! I wonder if I was better off back then…it was much cheaper….but now I know what works for me and what doesn’t, and why, ect. So maybe it’s more of “makeup exposure “ than education, but I would have defended that garbage palette in comments (had I watched RUclips prior to the lock down) in videos with zero hesitation! My makeup knowledge was basically nonexistent. I believe this to be part of the makeup view disconnect on many occasions.

But I didn't really know better, I thought it works alright! I can make use of it so it's good! I still use cheap stuff but not random unbranded eye pencils and random lipsticks I found around the house and even so there's *so* much difference.

Totally agree! You don't know what you don't know, right?! I was hard-core for Too Faced and Urban Decay and I own nothing from either brand anymore because they just don't compare to my Natasha Denona palettes or indie brands I've tried. Makeup is trial and error and subjective. I don't like matte foundations but I'll be damned that I love the Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse foundation! My biggest red flag is when an influencer does a first impression on a bunch of products, finds one that they consider “life changing” and then never uses it again or maybe talks about it once six months after the the first impression video. A good review of a product for me is when the influencer tries a product as a first impression, says they really like it, and continues to use it in future videos (as an example). That lets me know that they truly enjoy the product. Now, does that make me want to buy the product? Not always, because I watch a bunch of different people with a variety of different skin types. I have dry skin and am prone to hormonal acne.

Or, they do a full face of first impressions and give you final thoughts like they can tell if it's a good or a bad product from one use, or which one was even causing the issues when it's a new moisturizer, new sunscreen, new primer, new foundation, new concealer, and a new powder, or they say something is horrible when they don't use it how it's intended - of course it's a terrible eye shadow, it's supposed to be a lipstick!

They found a Maybelline powder video that Makayla did recently where she never showed the actual application and acted as if it was the second coming of Jesus as she hid the sponsored statement or added it later. She lies about the false lashes and then didn't respond about it at all and she hid the sponsored statement and doubled down on her lies and made a joke out of her actions in subsequent videos. She has used filters too. She has yet to apologize and she shouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt at all. That ship sailed.

Sorry for the long comment in advance!! I strongly dislike how she handled Lashgate but what pisses me off about her the most is she literally outed Cody’s ex for having a drug addiction which in turn sent her huge fanbase after this poor girl. I am a recovering addict with 4 years of sobriety so to me, what she did to that girl is so disgusting. She can talk about Cody all she wants in that regard if he allows it, that’s his business. I am always open about my addiction as well but I still wouldn’t want anyone talking about that online without my permission, especially someone so huge, and Mikayla clearly didn’t have it. I was disappointed to see that she told the entire internet about those struggles, especially when it seems like this girl was already having a hard time, but sending that many people to hate on her? It’s just cruel.
I could never support her anyway because I met someone who was personally bullied by her when they were in school. She cried when she told me how much it hurts her to see her bully all over social media. Its just sad to see how Mikayla acts. I would’ve loved to support a fellow New England girl who is making it in the beauty community, but she isn’t honest and clearly doesn’t care that she intentionally deceived her own fanbase. It could’ve already been over by now if she just said she put a lash on at the end and forgot to add a caption or tell everyone about it in the last clip! Like seriously! Oh well, it’s not like we can even see how anything looks on her skin with all the filters.
Anyway, I’m just tired of fake people. Dealt with enough in my life already so the last thing I want is to be wasting time on superficial influencers who value a dollar over the trust of their audience. Glad we have some of the good ones left, like you! Bc you don’t use these crazy filters, you are outspoken and upfront about any sponsorships, we know you don’t take just anything that comes your way either and you actually like the products you promote. So thank you for always being yourself and real with us.
I value and trust your opinions on makeup, even though there are things I won’t get because of personal preference or our different skin types. (for example, orange is the worst color on me but it looks perfect on you) for me I try to be thoughtful about what to buy and I would never be able to consider only one person’s review as the deciding factor of making that choice. You made some really good points. Glad you’re not afraid to speak out.

@@maiyorha Thank you so much, that means a lot to me! ❤️ I had no idea who they were either until someone I know brought it up. I do a few meetings a week including a really cool mom’s group for us moms in long term recovery. (Mikayla’s fiancé is Cody, his ex is the one who she outed as an addict, guess they were in rehab together at some point) but in one of my meetings, one girl was upset about the situation because I believe the ex was her former friend. We all agreed that if we were her and getting all that online hate, especially if we were already struggling with recovery, that it would be very easy to relapse. After that meeting I looked into it and saw a few videos about the situation. I just pray that girl will be ok. I saw some videos of her after the fact and.. I don’t want to speculate but let’s just say she definitely worried me. I hope that she won’t let the hate get to her and her recovery!

Another thing that poses me off is when they review a product while having lighting and filters hide texture and pores. Nobody is poreless and majority of us have texture. Recently Maybelline’s powder foundation went viral for the wrong reasons, it’s a whole fiasco. One guru claimed it’s lightweight, transfer proof, sweat proof, and long lasting but everybody else hated it because it was heavy, creased into smile lines, and not transfer or sweat proof.

A “red flag” that I learned yeeeears ago (been watching beauty videos since the beginning of time, lol), is when a beauty reviewer says “it’s the PEEEERRRRFECT nude lipstick!”. That doesn’t happen as much today, because people have become more educated on different skin tones and undertones, but 10-15 years ago, beauty enthusiasts on RUclips would recommend a nude lipstick shade as “universal”, calling it absolutely perfect for anyone, when obviously a nude depends on each individual’s unique coloring.

I have very deep set and hooded eyes and I have found that setting my eye primer depends on which primer I use. And finding an eye primer that works for my eye type was another ordeal in itself 😂 even with YT reviews out there to assist me. It's always, trust but verify, and living in the U.S. affords a nice position of being able to return a purchase that doesn't work (and trying to reduce unnecessary purchases is the goal of my watching reviews to begin with).

    • @colormyworld5390

@@amberm8185 Hello Amber! For the longest time ND primer worked a treat and I would only set my "crease" lol to brow area. The ND primer, for me, is what I'd call a wet or tacky primer, and with my eye type/shape, most shadows will not blend properly without setting a base like that in that area I mentioned. I rarely have reason to set my mobile lid.
Before discovering the ND primer, I had tried many, many others. Here are some results and some basic info for perspective. I have mostly normal skin with a t-zone that has very dry parts (forehead), but the deepest part of my hooded eyes are oily, like a dry oil.
      -Milani was too dry
-Makeup Revolution canvas something was too tacky/thick
-UD primer potion was too oily
-Anastasia BH is good for an almost white based primer, used sparingly, when I want colors to POP
-Wet n Wild photofocus is great for me, no pigment, not too tacky, no need to set at all
-Mac prep + prime seems oily, but blends out nice and I will only set depending on what shadows I'm using (some shadows are more oily than others)
-Smashbox 24hr is ok, not pigmented and no need to set, but can easily get tacky or gummy, esp around the inner/outer eye areas and under the brow
-Too Faced shadow insurance acts similar to the smashbox primer
I have two glitter glues, NYX and Too Faced, but I can get major creasing with both depending on the texture of the shadow, so I don't prefer to use either. I'd rather just spray my brush or use my finger, glue is last resort.
Hope this is helpful. I did watch about a dozen reviews on YT from others with same/similar eye types as mine before I went on my journey years ago and Angie is absolutely correct that what works for one (even if all else is equal/constant may still not work for another) bc I learned that my preferences did not align with most of those I did watch. However, I was able to learn about several new primers I didn't know existed and ultimately found a replacement (or a few 😆) and discovered more about makeup, myself, and my makeup style/preferences in the process.

@@amberm8185 For sure 😊 and I try experimenting with what I set with too. Mostly a shade close to skin tone for the "up to brow" part but the crease part can vary depending on the look. Again, like Angie said in her video, transition shades can be a colored shade and I love color.

I think their formula is not the best, but my colleague and I are looking for very different things in eyeshadow and we don’t have the same expectations. Preferences are everything when it comes to reviews and for me a red flag is when people speak in absolutes as opposed to having a nuanced conversation in their reviews.

  • @kohk79

For me, one thing that I know that I have to analyze is when a reviewer says that a lipstick product goes on patchy or smoothly. For instance, I follow Temptalia for the amazing swatches she does. However, Temptalia’s lips are very light, while mine are very pigmented (medium pinky mauve). I know that when a dark vampy color goes patchy on her lips, it will look just fine on mine (because my darker lip color will hide patches that might not be even), and when a light nude color goes on even on her lips, it might look patchy on mine (because, on my lips, my dark lip color might show through the uneven lip product). As for smoothness and evenness of application, I know that my lips are relatively very smooth, while my best friend’s have a certain fine texture. So, when she applies product, it will typically apply evenly and smoothly because the product has something to grip on to. However, on me, the same product might slide and slip because there are areas on my lips that are so smooth that the product doesn’t have anywhere to grip on to, and I have to apply a primer or several coats in order to get an even application. This doesn’t happen with all lip products, but it’s something that I have to consider (that is, even when a product works great on my friend or Temptalia, I know that, depending on the product, it might or might not work for me).

And good brushes helps TREMENDOUSLY. I used to use morphe only and had such a hard time thinking it was me or the product and it was the brushes I was using.

I like that you have clear ethics around PR and sponsorships. I’ve seen many people be so grateful to get PR that they’re afraid to be honest about the product and offend the brand and not receive free product anymore - also don’t like the word ‘GIFTED’. PR products are not gifts - like you always say ‘brands are not your friends.’

With foundation I've realized that I don't like what people with my similar skin typically like. I tend to like more coverage than others with dryer, mature, textured skin. I've found way more foundation I love, watching Nikkia Joy, oily skin, than I have watching more similar skin types. There are a few people I typically trust in regards to foundations but no one has ever loved everything I love and vice versa. You're someone that has similar likes in foundations so most of your recommendations I've really enjoyed.

for example, I was really surprised that you didn't like the about face balm blushes because I love them, but you explained that they didn't have enough pigment and blended away into nothing. I realized that's what I like about them, because I tend to apply them on my bare face (no foundation, just concealer) and I already have redness in my face, so I like something that just shifts that flush without turning me into a tomato. 😅

This is such a fab topic! I use all sorts of techniques depending on the formula or the look I’m trying to achieve so if I’m looking to buy a palette I watch as many reviews as possible to get a rounded view. I personally like reviews where the creator explains how to get the best out of a formula. I like honesty but not negativity. I feel that you always strike the perfect balance between being honest but also respectful to the brands. I’ve heard a few RUclipsrs talk about products that they want to try but they wouldn’t purchase and immediately turn around and ask the brand to send them it as PR. I’m always shocked after that when they actually send it to them. I understand the point of PR, but if you’re not willing to spend your own money on something then don’t turn around and tell us it’s worth spending our money on. It just makes me look at them differently.**

I like that you mentioned different techniques. I always go in with the darkest matte on the outer corner first & build from there. I also use the pack & blend method so I don't do as much blending at all. It makes my eyeshadow way more impactful & saturated. Most people do not enjoy that! As for miss mikayla, I'm also surprised by how much hate she's gotten. I always assumed she was a shill so it didn't remotely phase me. Beauty tinktonk in general is gross. There are only a couple I trust now. We aren't stupid, when you watch long enough, you can see their tells and know when they are not into a product. Or when they are just don't something to help a brand. It's disgusting. I've really backed off the number of videos I watch because I just don't trust hardly anyone anymore. And yes, a first impression is a first impression, not a "review with swatches". Even if you do 3 looks in the video, if you're wiping them of to do another you aren't reviewing, you don't know how long it will wear, if it will cease, fade, etc. The smaller creators I used to love have gotten bigger and we're back to codes and links being pushed just like the bigger creators. I'm so disgusted with this community yet again. I watch you and like 3 other religiously, and then some others here and there, but I don't believe anything they say. The other thing that aggravates me is when their community tab has links to all releases, even if they haven't tried them or like them. It's all about the money for their links. If i wanted one long a$$ commercial, I'd watch TV. There's my rant for the day lol. 🤪

@Maria Bull Oh I totally want them to make money. I don't care about sponsorships and partnerships at all. Just say that's what it is and be honest. Don't promote something you don't like or use. At that point they're using their platform to try to get us to buy stuff they don't like or use. We watch their videos, like, comment, and subscribe. They get money from that too, that's what gives them their platform and opens doors to sponsorships. Without us they'd be nothing. So to fill their community tab with "exciting new releases" that they themselves have no interest in so we use their link, or do a sponsorship and act like it's not, or worse, promote a product they've not liked in the past... that's deceitful and taking advantage of the followers that help make them. But honest reviews, links, sponsorships, heck yeah, make that money. That's what I meant on my comment. I'm not against them having these extra ways to make money at all. Just be true to who they are. And unfortunately a lot, not all, just start seeing green and forget about the loyalty their subscribers have given them. That's what I don't like. 😀

Do they struggle with acne prone skin or are they allergic to spf? Do they have texture we cannot see in the high lights? Do they have small pores or big? What are their problem areas? It’s very hard to find people my age who aren’t doing just neutral looks. Love your channel as well, and liked this video a lot! Totally agree with your thoughts on creators. I don’t look at Instagram much, and am not interested in Tic Tok. I’m not even that fond of “shorts”. I enjoy watching different techniques. Sometimes I try them, but mostly I do what works for me. We are all different and will like different things. I just want to see makeup used and reviewed, then I make up my own mind after watching several creators use a product. I do set my eye primer with powder. But I am very fair, and don’t mind my darks not being as dark as they are capable of being. But if I don’t set my primer (have tried dozens) then i will crease like crazy. I am dry to occasionally normal, and live in north Texas where the weather is unpredictable. As with anything else you are interested in getting, multiple reviews will help you make up your mind. I have not run into any creators I felt were using filters or trying to be deceptive, so I feel lucky with those I follow. I also used to love that All Nighter foundation! Excellent point about different techniques. I keep hearing people say the Natasha Denona cream-matte eyeshadow formula is awful when it's one of my absolute favorites and I wonder if it's because I love using my fingers for eyeshadow? I blend with a brush but I feel like I get the best pigmentation and have more control over placement when I go in with my fingers first, and for me at least the cream-mattes work so well with that technique.

Oh, and spraying my brush has literally never worked for me, it does the exact opposite of what it's supposed to and I don't understand why 😭 I just get LESS pigmentation and sparkle no matter how I try it? Also I don't want to get the shadow pan wet, even if I spray the brush after I've picked up the product I'd still be going in for more with a damp brush? I'm sure as hell not changing my brush in the middle, either. I don't understand how other people make it work???

Yeah ND's cream to powder formula works REALLY well for me if I use my fingers but less so with a brush. I have a love hate relationship with it since sometimes I want the precision or I have longer fingernails. Also, wetting the brush does zero for me too LOL if I want opaque adherence I use NYX Glitter Glue and/or my finger or even those silly little sponge applicators.

@@karovalkeaI have the same experience with spraying the brush. I do not like to get the pans wet it changes the formula and feel the same way about dipping with the wet brush.
I still have not figured out how to get the shine …and I also do not like using my finger.

I’m 51, so I’ve definitely “been around the makeup space” since the 80s, when magazines were the thing.
Any “reviews” that skew too dramatic are immediately ignored.
If something is “going to change my life”, it better DRAMATICALLY improve my life…. Give me a raise, become my “sugar parent”, something like that.
Oh, Nikki Raven is great. I’m ND and I vibe with her.

One thing that really helped me was when it comes to skincare - only listening to people who do primarily skin care and who are OLDER than me. Nadine Baggot for example. My skin hasn’t been particularly cranky since I did that. A lot of younger YT try so many things that are at Sephora that are multi- concern products. Older skin care experts tend to layer single concern products and target just what your skin may need - since I did that no more breakouts or overly dry or overly oily skin. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

For me the biggest red flag is when a product especially foundation is "dewy or glowy". I am 38 with oily skin and live in a very hot and humid climate. No thank you! I don't need to look more oily or sweaty.

I've been following you for a while and I learned your tastes and style pretty well. When you don't like something, especially foundation, it is usually a thing I would like. Because I have a really dry skin. And I also have a cool toned skin that really likes cool purples, burgundies and reds, I don't follow your bronzer, blush, lipstick recommendations. Makeup is really personal. Even mascara depends on your lash type, what you want, what you like etc. Everyone has different tastes. When I first started makeup I used to follow recommandations blindly but in time I learned what my tastes are, what I lean forward. And I created my own style. But still I follow other beauty youtubers because I love their chitchats, I love their first impressions and reviews. They still give me an idea about the product I'm planning to buy.
