Today on The Skid Factory, Al & Woody visit Hartley Engines & Motorsport Over in New Zealand and talk to Nelson Hartley about the Nissan VK56DE Engine. We think it is a perfect match for Gavin's 1971 Nissan Skyline "Hakosuka".

you wait a whole week and get low content video... unbox it noooooow!
This is next weeks vid. ruclips.net/video/Yb6dZ1IFlKc/видео.html
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🖕
Didn’t know woody could sing like that. Good to see him growing his hair out a bit though.
@@theskidfactory Aint no strangers to love, you know the rules, and so do I…… I’m never gunna give you up, never gunna let you down…
Yeah what a c0cktease
I have an '05 Nissan Titan that I bought new. 260k miles and at least 300 passes at the dragstrip have taken their toll on her. Boy I would love to put a proper VK56 in her. She's been so good to me. The Hako is so lucky. Beautiful car and I love your channel. Cheers from South Carolina, USA.
Nelson's seems like a legend!
This episode was over so quickly too, looking forward to next week
A legend at the least, very humble and knowledgeable bloke. We’re stoked to be working with him on this project.
@Stupid Liberals I used to race bicycles with/against Kyle Tilley. Quit bikes due to injury and took up karting. He moved to USA 6 years ago, started racing LMP2 in 2020. Rolex 24h Daytona 2020, 3rd in LMP2 class, won Asia Le Mans Series 2021 LMP2-Am class, then won LMP2 class at Daytona 2021. Summer 2021 he also started racing in NASCAR Cup series in the Live Fast #78 (finished 31st out of 40 on his debut at COTA, on the lead lap).
Was weird when I started hearing a familiar name on Radio Le Mans.
You know the engine will be fast, Nelson has a 200mph hairstyle.
Don't forget the Busa' V8
Who else thinks that turbo forklift is just the funniest thing ever!!!!!
Yeah it needs it's own show on the comedy channel.
Thats a 1000hp Forklift for shure!
Welding that turbo on it was by far the best mod that came out of these boys 🤣🤣 I fuckin love it!
It gets me every time
So bogan, but I love it!
The scooter and dairy joke wasn’t lost Woody. 😂
I think they all missed the "Take the tripod out of the playroom at home and bring it to work" line, though. I had to pause long enough to stop laughing after that one. 😂😂😂
nek minnit!
El roy says fuk u biters
I love how Al pays more attention to correct grammar than most news journalists. Diamond in the rough big fella.
Class rulebook "carburetted v8 mandated to reduce build costs"
Engine builder " billet intake 4 valve quad cam 10,000 rpm it is then!!"
The eternal circle of motorsport life.
You are not wrong. Motorsport guys can make anything more expensive than it should be.
@@theskidfactory it's the "Performance Tax" works the same as Covid tax but but been around much longer...
The funny thing is that Nelson's dad is on the committee that makes the rules for speedway
I have never been blue-balled so badly in my life.
I'm gonna need a few Lemon Squash to drown my unfinished sorrows in.
I was thinking how could you be blue-balled so badly. Got to the end. I feel the same pain 🤣 They must be learning from rob dahm
😂
@@wayneheaney6271 OH GOD. Please let's not make that the new standard.
Like a wedding planner.
The Hartley are motorsport legends here in NZ, Nelson building engines and Brendon driving various events in Europe 24 hour endurance as well as a stint in Formula 1.
Met Brendon at Le Mans a few years ago, top bloke
When watching this vid and seeing Hartley, my first thought was "haha funny, that guy looks like the ex F1 driver from down under". Cool family.
I like how much AL has opened up to us lately. Your personality is Australian gold. Ill buy you a beer one day brother 🍻
As long as i get the second shout im in
Lemon squash ;)
i knew when woody started theory crafting this engine and yoda cried tears of methanol joy, that someone was getting their ear chewed into using this engine.
Can’t wait to see how those ITBs and intake plenum thingy turned out!
I am a contractor that did some work in Decherd plant, and fell in love with the VK. I am building one and shoving it into a S13. I am so excited for this build series.
That sounds like epic fun! Love how those sound.
Nice work with the "Wayne's World" transitions and an engine builder who looks like Garth.
Ha. Garth-inspired build to come: VK56 in a Gremlin!!!
That moment where you know the already filmed the unboxing but make us wait because its good for the algorithm or something!
“Take the tripod out of the playroom at home”
Oh wow, that’s just plain unfair. Right before the vinegar stroke.
Yes Bastards; I will have "lovers balls" for a whole fuckin' week!
@@legend7ify "Lovers balls" over a four stroke....! Yeah im sorry i had to be "that guy"
I’ve had a VK56 in my garage for years! These engines are sick! Wanted it in my Z32…
Alan's time travelling transition just made my week 😁
I really enjoyed the NZ trip you did. I've been following Glenn at The Lab ever since.
Wow - Nelson is very young, and seems like a real genius in what he does. Can't wait to see the series build. Cheers.
I’m excited for this build. The VK56 sounds pretty mean in trucks as it is. At 8k RPM will be glorious.
Bro thank you! You did a build I've been working on for over 15 years!
Ha! So cool to see 3d-printed ITB. I've been working on something similar to adapt inexpensive throttle plates to my Porsche. This gives me way more confidence that it might actually work. I was also looking at carbon fiber reinforced filaments...
I think Clough42 here on youtube has some episodes on carbon reinforced filament.
Old mate '2-Stroke Stuffing' is experimenting with the same material. He seems pretty happy.
Oh my !! I loved this motor when you were there. I think I just came..
I don't know how old Nelson is, but his knowledge/creativity is awesome !!
Are we just gonna forget the fact this guy is Brendon Hartley's brother? Insane!
FAAAAAARK YEEEEAAAAAH! Was so keen for this ep. In fact I think this whole build is going to be my favourite of all time.
Plus - I'd just like to say I was right about the engine, though I thought they got it from the USA, not NZ.
The engine did come from the USA and was refurbished in NZ. Alan stated that in this video.
@@donaldk.macbaird5248 I think the VK56DE is pretty much exclusive for the US market & used in pickup-trucks & oversized SUV's that they love so much over there. My understanding was it's even manufactured there... might be remembering that wrong though.
@@Beer_Dad1975 yeah - that's why I though they picked it up during drag week (with the cummins), not their NZ trip.
@@Beer_Dad1975 Yes you are right as it is made in the USA for the Nissan Titan Pickup and their huge SUV
@@donaldk.macbaird5248 Nice to be an American with such cheap fuel I guess. And they still complain about it.
Whoever owns this car is a lucky guy! This build is epic and Skid Factory is the shop for the job.
This is so Fn EPIC, guys most exciting project to date, BINKY level amazing.
Whats Binky?
Gavin must be so excited for this, I couldnt believe it when i went to do some work for him and he opens the shed to show me this.
Was awesome to listen to Nelson talk. There is someone who loves their work.
So proud seeing you guys in mt glorious town of Palmerston North!!
The after credits scene on this was brilliant 😆, looking forward to more episodes on the hako
A right cliff hanger, love it boys, can't wait to see it. This is going to be a great project.
Hoooly heck. I can't believe we actually got what we wished for!
I am so incredibly excited to see that engine in the bay and probably even more excited to hear it sing. You picked a hell of an outfit to make one whopper of an engine!
I already in love with this build and can't wait to see this engine. Awesome stuff
I reckon all transitions from now on should be Al saying "Bibbly bibbly bibbly." Looking forward to how the Hakasooka turns out!
Nelson Hartley is an engineer who gets it, waiting two years to get to this point... painful, but worth the wait I reckon.
Cheers from Tokyo!
Stu
Wow, that was such a fast episode! Nelson really is a legend, so much knowledge and passion. Really looking forward to seeing the engine, and from Nelsons explanation it will sound pretty wild. I really missed with my guess for engine, maybe in a future video?
Great vid. So many things to love: kiwi land engineering, high reving V8, motorsport derivative, the suspense!
Thumbs up for the 'what happened to my scooter' reference to Nek Minnit.
Sick car, wicked conversion , great stuff ...great vid can't wait roll on wednesday !!! Our cuzzies across the pond build excellent machines .
Really go to town boys, this will be something special for sure. Dream car
Ughhhhhh I dont want to wait!. I have been eyeing off Hartley's ITB's for another engine, top shelf stuff!
Did I stay up tonight waiting for this video to drop, because I literally haven't been able to stop thinking about the reveal all day...?
Yes.
Yes I did! 😬
This sounds bloody awesome. Yet another absolutely knock out build in the works, done right, from you guys! 😍
(but most importantly, great to see an old clip from Woody's date thrown in there 😂 )
What a cliffhanger! Can't wait to see this bad boy
This is just way outside the box 😝 awesomeness
One of a kind builds that just makes this channel wicked 👍👍👍👍
This is the most excited I've been about any of your projects.!!
I love that you guys supposrt us Kiwis too with the motorsport scene! Chur!
Can't wait to see this; I have an '08 Armada and this would be a REALLY COOL upgrade!!!
Still soooo psyched about this build!!!!
I'm late to the party, but I just recently picked up an M56s, basically a big old saloon with that beefy VK. I had no idea how stupid strong those engines were.
here in the states I believe we call that outlaw dirt oval racing. Pretty bananas stuff.
That editing at the end though 😂. Love the tease, can’t wait for more nissan v8 goodness
4:50 the way Al is caressing the valve cover 😂 can tell he can’t wait to get started sticking one of these in the old gtr
Exactly like midwest usa dirt track racing. NZ more n more seems like a place i wish i could relocate. Usa is insane these days.
NZ is one of like 4 countries where the government can change civilian "rights" overnight, especially a one party govt like we have currently.
Our constitution is not binding and has been altered multiple times, used to have freedom of speech and now I can literally be sent to jail for commenting the wrong thing online...
Well yes and no I'm currently watching this in lockdown from the garage cause being stuck in one place for 6 weeks with wife and kids can test the patience
This is awesome. Because of this video I finally have a lead on upgrades for my VK56de going into my 350z. Hardly anyone builds a vk56 here in the USA :/ Still need help finding the right adaptor to mate it to my cd009 z transmission
I knew it was going to be an LS or a VK, and was extremely happy to see this…
I wish i knew you guys were in Palmy North... would have loved to have met up with you guys and given you a wee tour of our fair city.
First time for me ever seeing one in general. Pretty neat car an what a great learning experience thanks again . Looking forward to seeing this project completed.
That's an awesome engine you guys using!! Can't wait to see the finished result!! 👍👍
Very exciting build, can’t wait. What a sensational choice for this car. Well done boys, I hope this blows the channel up on the subs
Can’t wait to hear this beast
This times two! I bet it will sound godly in person!
Me three
I am glad I'm putting one of these in my 300ZX
Nice, I have a VK56 in my Nissan Titan.
With engine choices that are not main stream, this is why you guys are awesome. Always willing to do way outside the box, as in like next plant outside the box. This is going to sound epic, can't wait for first start. But for now, let's crack open a lemon squash and get ready for it'd installment
This build has got me eye balling your channel again
"grab the tripod out of the playroom and bring it on down" - Nelson you madrooter!
This will be epic! I usually don’t comment but this thing is going to be a beast. Well done Al and Woody
I was expecting RB, but this is going to be so much better.
if our superstocks are anything to go by for the sound and power.... that things going to be a monster
Is this the same Hartley family as former f1 driver Brendan Hartley?
Yes, Nelson and Brendon are brothers.
Don't judge hin based off his F1 career, he was alot more successful in WEC (2 championships) and 24hrs Lemans (2 class wins).
The suspense of no unboxing this weeks episode!
This thing is going to be epic nelson just seems to get it cant believe I have to wait another week
I was hooked when you did the episode of kiwi shed sheep mechanic.
This thing is gonna be iconic.
Damn those transitions were slick boys
I'm excited to see how balls crazy this one gets!
The only surprise for me was that you didn't already know Hartley- he has been building an awesome full race version of the Toy V 12- did you get to play with on of those? Last I looked they were an eye watering pile of AUD to buy!
That was a rotten trick, bringing in the crate and not opening it- if you'd just said we hope to have it next episode, we would all have been here anyway! Yer a bit hairy to be playin' the tease, mate! FR
I have a vk56 in my first gen Titan. I have long tube headers, catless resonated b pipes, variable intake manifold (PD 90 as it's known), Audi r8 coilovers, CAI, a great e-tune on 93 octane, belt fan delete (e-fans), gm 90mm throttle body...etc.. But I also have a 6-in lift with some pretty gnarly coilovers. I'm struggling to make 400 horsepower per dyno wheel. I'm super impressed that you've been able to make a smaller displacement engine that makes more horsepower lol
Firstly, wheel hp vs engine hp is a very different deal, and secondly, I'm sure you aren't spinning yours to 10,000rpm!
VK56 sick engine choice I wouldn't have guessed,
Should keep the Nissan brigade happy. Sounds like a worthy engine for a unique Resto mod !
i was so looking forward to that crate lid being ripped off damn you woody
Cant wait to hear the 8 to 1 exhaust
Already liked before i even watched LOL. Thumbs up from Cape Town South Africa
Just casually drop in Kouki/Zenki reference in the banter during/after credits. All the rotary people's ears pricked up...
Best sounding Forklift ever!
so I was right about the engine! I knew it. Nice work fellas. Cant wait to see what it looks like fitted up.
Ooooo! Nice choice of powerplant. This is going to be a great build!
Watching, listening... and at the end of the video realising Hartley sounds familiar... of course he's a brother of Brendon Hartley! WOW :D Cool family :D
I'll admit a V8 was not on my shortlist of possible swaps, but I reckon this one should sound pretty special after all.
Excited for next week!
Going to be AWESOME guys!
Oh hey there is ONE VQ that sounds good ha ha!!
You've got "mufflers" getting rid of the ass trumpet noise.
Fix the bloody clock, Glenn! 😁✌️
Dam was really keen to see the finish engine great job guys keep up the great content 👍🏻🇦🇺
I had no idea about that type of racing. Grew up with dad racing solos so seen plenty of demo derby, with or without caravans but that full contact racing looks interesting, will certainly check it out.
I can't believe you guys are doing this to us...
LMP3 (2015 onwards) spec engine is a naturally aspirated VK56DE. The VK45DE was used in SuperGT's GT500 class 2007-2009 and various LMP2 cars 2011-2016 before the class specified the Gibson engine. Isn't it nice when they fit race engine blocks in SUVs and trucks, so you can find them at your local scrap yard?
welcome back to the skid factory
At first I thought Al was spraying starter fluid into the turbo... Then watched again and saw he's the oiling system
Keen to see the progress, looking forward to next week's video!
