I think I'm gonna get one. Could you please tell the song you're playing around 8:50? I think I have heard that one but just can't recall what song it is!
Worth pointing out that you can designate it to up to 5 guitars. Saving the settings for each one. Putting the TWA on is relatively simple but take time to go through their instructions to avoid feedback issues. Very rewarding little device..love mine
Yes it’s worth it to me. I always have rechargeable batteries on hand and I enjoy playing my Martin more when it’s available. Why they didn’t include a lithium rechargeable pack inside and just plug it up for the night to keep it charged, that would have been perfect.
I had the same Taylor 414 as you except without the cutaway and noticed that you still have the stock nut and saddle and they've yellowed. Those micarta/tusq on your Taylor are basically plastic which is why its yellowed. You will get a better sound if you swap the nut and saddle for bone or fossilized ivory is even better (my personal recommendation) As a bonus the upgrade will make the guitar look newer since those parts will be white not yellowed You will get more low end and overall resonance. This is an essential upgrade on every Taylor guitar.
The back of the guitar is acting as the cone in a speaker, and since it is the material that produces the sound in the first place, it should sound perfect! The back of the tonewood box has a transponder that vibrates the back. The sound is also vibrating the front, which is generating good feedback….. why it sounds natural.
Thanks for the review. I've also just gotten one and wanted to comment that I do feel that the volume does get amplified as well. So it's a great deal considering that, the effects and the sheer portability and ease of use.
Invest in some good quality Panasonic rechargeable batteries as they will last much longer, also use a small strip of sellotape to join the batteries together for the two inline ones as this will help get them out of the unit because rechargeables are slightly fatter than the non rechargeables. Eneloop pro recommended.
Waiting for mine to arrive, but what I’m expecting, is it would be great to be able to order extra X Braces & sticky stickers to install the brace on various guitars & leave it there, so you just have to remove the amp when you want to switch guitars.
This reply is rather late in coming as I just discovered this video. So you’ve probably already made your decision regarding this product. I’ve installed The internal magnets on several guitars. The first one was on a voyage air guitar, and I put additional magnetic attachment brackets and other guitars I owned so that I could use the TWA on other guitars. The adhesive on the foam stickers he is not super aggressive and I have been able to remove the magnetic bracket from inside my voyage air guitar when I took it on international flights (the airlines prohibited transporting magnets, the Chinese are super strict about this). In any case a direct answer to your question is that I have not observed any damage to the guitar by removing The internal magnetic brace.
I have an X-Brace installed in 3 different acoustic guitars. It has to be removed when you put it in the case. I have it on 2 Martins and 1 Orangewood acoustics.
I haven’t tried one of these, but if it’s anything like the transacoustic system, although it won’t add volume as such, it adds massively to the presence of the instrument. It’s like playing in a large, reverberative hall, which gives the impression of extra volume.
Thanks for the review maybe you can answer 1 question did you notice any sort of a delay between your strum and the actual output? two questions actually with just the Reverb did you hear Overtones almost like a howl in the background or is it me
Have purchased this it's Awesome. use it on my 6 and 12 string yahmaha. You have to buy another magnetic bracket. I just switch on and off to the other. This is a must buy.
Hey, you actually can use it in a PA system, there is a setting that actually allows you to directly put the sound from the guitar with effects added into the PA system, there is an out port in the tonewood amp.
I've been thinking about getting one of these for my Fender Malibu Player. It's a beautiful guitar that's really well built, but the sound is very empty and soulless, so I'm hoping something like the Tonewood could compensate for what the instrument lacks on it's own and give it some depth and soul. One question: How quickly does it drain AA batteries?
Can anyone tell me after assemble this (tone wood ) on acoustic guitar .. Does amplifier have any work with it ? Or this amp can play without "speaker's AMP" ? please HELP ME for this .. If I install it at home and want to go somewhere to play, ..will it fit in its case? Or do I have to take it out at home to put guitar in case, and reinstall when i get to my location?
It removes easily off the back of the guitar, by magnets. I put it in my little compartment in my case and just place it on the back of my guitar when ready to play. There's no uninstalling required. You just install the magnetized brace on the inside of the guitar 1 time.
9:50 sounds like Bon Iver. That picking pattern is something else. Just wish I knew exactly what it was! Let us know what all you're playing in this video if you don't mind! Sounds incredible.

Have you tried the yamaha trans-acoustic implementation of this? It's even better than tonewoods amp. GC had a used version on sale for a good price but it wasn't the solid back and sides version. Was so much fun to play.
Was it really better? I have been looking at the TA models for a while. But seems like they shouldn't be able to complete with a big, dedicated unit like this?
Could u PLS PLS PLS do “wildwood flower” by the carter family? My uncle is not doing that well and that’s one of his fav songs so I want to learn how to play it and ur my fav guitar RUclipsr...
I've owned two of these things over the years (first one got burnt up along with my home and my town by the Camp Fire in 2018). It does not have an outboard power port. You may be able to rig one with one of the usb ports but you need to know what you are doing or you could fry this thing. It does not significantly increase the volume of the instrument. You really don't want it to as that would increase the likelihood of generating feedback. It is essentially an attachable, battery powered, efx processor and speaker driver. It adds efx to the sound of your guitar by driving your guitar body like a speaker cone.
Tonewood state that the increase is between 3 and 9dB depending on playing style, with fingerstyle and single notes being on the higher end. 6dB (middle of that range) is about twice the volume, so the range in increase as a percentage would be about 40% on the low end to 180% on the high end.
It doesn't amplify it a whole lot, and you don't really want it to, as that would increase the likelihood of generating feedback. The "Amp" part of its name is perhaps a mite misleading. I would characterize it as an attachable, battery powered, multi-efx processor/speaker driver. It adds efx to your acoustic sound by driving the body of your guitar like a speaker cone.
I'm finding this out indeed. I try to turn it up and I'm getting a lot of feedback, it's a trip. Depending on the placement seems to be making feedback worse but I'm surprised that there is a lot of feedback.
I don't know if you got the answer to how it works, but here's my view of it, having one of my own installed on my Martin. The Tonewood Amp box contains an actuator - an arm of maybe a couple of inches long, that vibrates the guitar at the point of iits contact. If you look at the back of the unit you'll see this mechanical actuator, a rubber pad that makes direct contact with the back of your guitar. Without the actuator pad, it does nothing. The guitar signal is used to drive an amplifier into the actuator arm in an electrical-to-mechanical conversion, causing the actuator to vibrate, and you know as well as I that if something's (a guitar) vibrating in the spectrum we can hear, it makes a sound in the air - unless you're in a vacuum, which we can dismiss out-of-hand. Depending on the guitar, it uses it as the resonator and mixer of the combination, uniting the played acoustic energy from the natural guitar sound strings with additive signals coming from the vibrating actuator imparted vibes/sounds. Think of it as an extra set of virtual strings inside the guitar. And the signal processing and effects are a whole other subject. But that's the basic, clever premise of this amp.

Hey Jutvari if I'm not mistaken that was Autumn Leaves - a great song to learn if you're learning music theory because it simply moves around the circle of fifths.
After about thirty years I started playing with a metronome wired into my ear. That was the best thing that I’ve ever done. You’ll lose the crowd if your timing is off. You’ll never lose them for forgetting words or missing chords. True
If you have an acoustic that can plug in (has a 1/4'' jack input) then you don't need a pickup. If your acoustic has no plug in port, then you need to get the tonewood amp that comes with a pickup. (choose the Tonewood Amp + Pickup Bundle) The pickup is a bar that fits across the soundhole of your guitar. It's an extra $50 for this.
Thank you so much, Jon, for de-mystifying what seemed to be a little complicated. I have a beautiful Walden acoustic electric, but the Fishman pickup is hardly worth it. I have a feeling this Tonewood amp would be a whole lot better.
The tonewood needs to use a pickup or mic inside to work. This review doesn't explain things, you are watching someone bemused by magic, rather than understanding the technology and science.
There are 3 reverbs, a delay, 2 tremolos, an autowah, an overdrive, and another weird effect I haven’t figured out yet. The reverbs and delays are the real selling point
@@TJ-sy6lh Its profile is only about an 1". It also changes the center of gravity of the guitar, making it a little more tail heavy. I found that both of these were easy to get used to.

But if you guys buy anything from American music supply, not only can you get anything up to 1500 on a 3 or 6 month payment plan with no credit check, or op to % 3,000 for a 8 or 12 and sometimes a 18 months with a credit check. You also have a 45 day money back no questions asked guarantee if you feel your equipment is not for you. You dont live it for some reason, just call em up and theyll send you a shipping label and send it back. Just make sure you keep all the boxes and packaging for atleast 45 days. I've been dealing with them for over 20 years. I can't recommend them enough. And yes, they have the tonewood amps!
It's absolutely useful live because you can use the output into a pa or amp. Decent review, but you should research better ahead of time. It has settings where you could do a DI into an amp or pa, or have it come out of the guitar itself AND use the DI. It's basically perfect for playing for large audiences.
I agree that the not knowing it had an output thing could’ve been a bit embarrassing but I really like the fact that it seems genuinely like he took it out of the box that day. I’ve really been trying not to buy this thing for a while but I think I’m sold.
@@christophergray6211 I literally just got mine. I just need to have it installed (my guitar needs a setup anyway, so I'm gonna just have it installed by whoever I hire to do that). I'm pretty stoked to try this thing!
@@JasonZimmerman1980 so get this you can run a midi program (midi guitar 2) and sample tank on your phone and it will sound like you have other instruments playing with the guitar you’re playing. And you can do that via Bluetooth!!! Ps I ordered mine yesterday. I still am waiting to see the product that people are using but there’s a tonewood amp users group on FB and they give feedback and tonewood is on there as a user to give advice and feedback as well.
@@christophergray6211 yeah. The only thing that sucks is it only works with some iphone app, from what I understand. I hate apple and use android and they don't support android yet. Still, this thing is a genius device that I'm sure I'm gonna have tons of fun with.
I have played a Yamaha transacoustic and found it spectacularly good. This looks like a fantastic invention and variation on the theme. Unfortunately, it also looks like a lot of (fiddly) fuss and bother, a bit invasive of the instrument and ending up clunky - a large box sticking out of the back of the guitar. They say it eats batteries too. The effects created are wonderful. It might be worth £250, just to see what it’s like in reality. I’m in two minds about it.
Absolutely! I installed a Fishman magnetic pickup in the soundhole of a Voyage Air guitar. Worked great. And then I used the iDevice adapter to patch the signal through my iPhone - running MIDI Guitar, and SampleTank. Here is a link to a RUclips I posted with this rig (yes, I have multi-tracked in an acoustic double-bass, but the rest of the instrumentation and efx are as described above - NOT multi-tracked ) ruclips.net/video/1WQwcB-DJCU/видео.html
I don't know how to describe this, but the reverb sounds tuned to a specific pitch, and if I had to pick the pitch, I'd say it's E. It doesn't sound 'neutral' and I admit I don't care for it. Does anyone else hear it or understand what I'm saying?
@@BonafideToolJunkie lol the reviews speak for themselves, just because you're not a fan you don't speak for everyone. It's a great little device. Feedback is only an issue if you don't know how to control the gain settings
You are getting feedback, you just need to turn down the volume on the Tonewood amp itself. If you scan the QR code on the back of the amp you can download a full user manual. That's what I did and printed it out. It's a good reference.
Timecode for the actual sound test: 7:30

Thank you so much, Jon, for de-mystifying what seemed to be a little complicated. I have a beautiful Walden acoustic electric, but the Fishman pickup is hardly worth it. I have a feeling this Tonewood amp would be a whole lot better.
The tonewood needs to use a pickup or mic inside to work. This review doesn't explain things, you are watching someone bemused by magic, rather than understanding the technology and science.
Either the reverb has waaaay too long a decay or something else is wrong. Not at all a natural decay. I heard this on another demo.
You can adjust all decay times and intensities with the knobs, there are 3 different reverbs. His was just on the default settings and needs tweaked
you can use any sound hole pickup - you don't have to use theirs
Can we record it or send it to the sound board at the auditorium?
Yes. It has a DI mode as well, and you can adjust the blend of signal (efx processor / pickup balance) being sent out to the board.
@@DavidPierceCHT Thanks David.
What chords were played in minute 8:38 ? Is that a song? I want to learn it! Haha
The tune is called "autumn leaves". Check RUclips you will see various tutorials on it. Cheers!
So I see you did this video 3 years ago. What’s your thoughts on it now and Is it worth the bucks?
yea, I still love it!
Excellent news, I just ordered one and the recommended rechargeable batteries. Thanks for the reply.
Looks like a beneficial product for those of us who can't afford afford pesals and huge amps.
Just received mine! Can't wait to try it out
How was it? What I am worried about is that sort of like howling wind noise sound I hear...
I have one and I love it.
What is that fist song you played?
Is the back of your guitar flat?
does all it do is echo? or are there other features to it?
Yea that’s just the delay feature I believe
I don’t own one but I saw an ad including reverb I even believe
There are 3 reverbs, a delay, 2 tremolos, an autowah, an overdrive, and another weird effect I haven’t figured out yet. The reverbs and delays are the real selling point
What the hell are you doing placing any guitar face down on a table without any support?
Just bought it with discount code, Thank You so much!
Awesome! Hope you enjoy it!
Does it rub against your body?
That’s what I wonder. It seems like it would put an uncomfortable space and make guitar a bit crooked against your body.
@@TJ-sy6lh Its profile is only about an 1". It also changes the center of gravity of the guitar, making it a little more tail heavy. I found that both of these were easy to get used to.
Very cool product from what you’ve shown! Will be looking into it somewhat more...
Love your cap
Im not sponsored by AMS.
My friend jeff jarret had one of these on his guitar. It kept falling of...
it might have not been installed properly. That step is very important, and can be a bit difficult.
Same with my friend, The Honky Tonk Man.
Will this work with a passive pickup?
Thanks for the review.
It's a great idea, but I feel therew room for improvement and a much lower price 👍
It was just on sale for like $215, I picked one up, worth it.
@@BonafideToolJunkie lol the reviews speak for themselves, just because you're not a fan you don't speak for everyone. It's a great little device. Feedback is only an issue if you don't know how to control the gain settings
@@BonafideToolJunkie That's strange of you to say.
Sounds great. Is the price different if I need the pick up?
Yes, it's an extra $50, I believe.
Beautiful guitar
Great video!
Wow, What an Awesome Amp!!!! Great Review “Coach”!😍.
Why do I hear a constant ringing noise?
You are getting feedback, you just need to turn down the volume on the Tonewood amp itself. If you scan the QR code on the back of the amp you can download a full user manual. That's what I did and printed it out. It's a good reference.
It’s very interesting Jonathan.. but the problem is, my Yamaha guitar does not have a build in plug ins....sad. Thank you anyway my friend.
They have one that comes with a pickup that you place in the sound hole, for guitars without built-in pickups.
Does the guitar still fit in the case after it's installed?
I just bought one!! It cost $249.00 I think it is overpriced. But I don't care. I arrives in a couple of days.
Hay I love your videos! You’ve taught me so much😆 can you do “the blessing” by Evolution worship it’s my favorite thanks for your amazing videos 🙃
