- Star Donaldson takes us through the significance and history of the silk press in the second episode of Crowned. The silk press hairstyle was born out of a need to survive in a racist society. In this video, we learn about the history of the silk press and the straightening styles that came before it such as pullers and the hot comb.

This is excellent, but your audience is not only in the USA. It would be so interesting to know how this subjects relate to black people in the Americas.
Perfect explanation.. thanks

This was so interesting! I had no idea what pressing meant and why it was so significant. Definitely glad to know some history!
Straightening afro textured hair with heated tools has ALWAYS been called a 'press' or 'press and curl'. I have no idea where the 'silk' came from, but it has nothing to do with the resulting texture. The point of any press is straighten out the kinks and curls for a sleek, straight look. Next thing you know, someone is going to try to rename braids something silly and byrdie will come out with an article trying to explain the history of 'hair knitting'.
