  • In this episode of Motive Garage, presented by Sparesbox, we upgrade our intercooler to a Process West kit, as we pushed power well past what our original intercooler set-up was designed for, and test the results. Don't forget you can win our GR Yaris project car! Become an LMCT+ member here: lmctgiveaway.c...
    *Yes, we know Ekanoo made 514whp but that is a different dyno and not comparable. Our MPH is the same at the same weight when we made 352kW at the hubs. NOow we make 362kW at the hubs, so make your own calculations.

    Be interesting to see how the larger IC has affected the radiator's efficiency. Which again isn't an issue at the drags, but would for circuit use, maybe something to review/note before the cam upgrade as I assume there are data logs from the Motec on the various tuning sessions. Makes me wonder about the ol mega thick drag ICs of yester year and how efficient were they.

      I doubt it will affect it much, the air goes all the way through both, that’s the whole reason they’ve gone with the shallower taller design. If anything the fan will come on less in traffic than before.

    Very good choice of intercooler type. You've got things right. I've said this many a times in car forums over the years. One should use the appropriate volume of a core for the power he is going to run, with as much surface area as possible. What usually people do on high hp setups, they change the thickness of the cooler, but they keep relatively the same surface area as the stock unit i.e. This is not beneficial, as they only manage to get the extra volume and get rid of the restriction for their power target, but they gain very little, not even that enough times, in heat exchange characteristics, as with more compressed volume of air, more heat comes along . The thinner a piece of metal the faster it exchanges heat with the atmosphere, the same principle goes for a cooler of any type. The important thing with a cooler, is to find the best ratio between volume, and heat exchange for one's setup. In order for one to gain back from and counteract at a significant degree the blocking of the radiator, and allow as much stream of fresh air to reach it, is best to use a tube and fin design intercooler, with very efficient aerodynamically designed tubes. This type allows the most air to reach the radiator. I use the same type of core on my 1000+hp Evo, as the one you have used, but on a tube and fin design. The progress on the yaris is going awesomely. Great choice of parts, great work on it, great results. Keep at it, and all the best to you and your family for the new year.

    That's interesting! Who supplies the cores to plazmaman?
    PWR historically ramble on about pressure drop and heat exchange at extreme temperatures but their air2air ITC cores always seem to be a let down on outright power on "big hp street/drag car applications "

      @@MotiveVideo A good friend of mine is one of the lead engine tuners for the current Red Bull F1 car working for Honda and I asked him the same question. He said the loss is definitely greater at higher horsepower levels so it's not a fixed amount, nor is it a fixed percentage. And they have an engine dyno as well as a hub dyno there where they tune for every single track. Unless it can be verified at the engine, it's just a guessing game.

    I'm not convinced the back half of the intercooler was getting heat soaked. Whilst the thickness of the cooler likely was the cause of the problems you were having, it would have been more to do with restriction and the lack of ducting to force air through the core. Like most things, air takes the path of least resistance which by the looks of it would have been around the intercooler rather then through it.

    I wonder if someone will do an integrated air and oil cooler. Maybe 65mm thick if it will fit and have the top 25mm of it for the oil cooler with an fittings on the oil cooler in and outlet. Might be closer to the best of both worlds if you could run lines to the oil cooler bit of it.

    • @MotiveVideo

      You cant as heat soak from oil cooler will effect intercooler. Combined coolant radiator and oil cooler works

    I don't know why Toyota does'nt want to spend the money to develop it's own real Supra but have money to spend on the GR Yaris.

    • @dragbag1616
      @dragbag1616 2 года назад

      Well, first off, the GR Yaris was SUPPOSED to be a limited production run car, which costs less engineering manufacturing wise, although they now are gradually expanding production afaik. Also, while Toyota doesn't have a longitudinal platform in its lineup, nor any FR car (GT/GR86 borrows the platform), it does have transverse engine designed fronts ready in its engineering toolbox. So to engineer a rally car is cheaper to them than a sports car. If that makes any sense.
