I think that this may actually significantly expand the player base. If that would lead to better content, I think that it may be beneficial. If they sell ships better than the ones old players already have, that is another story ofc.

No, they are almost bankrupt and looking for money everywhere (I remind you about the last deal with Atari and getting rid of more IPs). But if it helps development in some way, I'm for it. After all, this is a financing method copied from scam Citizen. The problem is that ED is archaic and has little to attract new customers.

Frontier your game peaked in 2019 with the DW2 expedition, the last major headline-making community lead event. That kind of thing was your blueprint for prolonged success, but you ignored it in favour or your own on rails narrative and gradual distancing yourself from the community. So here we are, 5 years later and you're now desperate for cash because the playerbase that gave you all the best PR headlines has had enough and moved on. Just let it die with some dignity, Frontier.

And they will be introducing being able to buy pre built ships to let new players jump into an area of the game. Both of which I dont have a problem with since I doubt (hope not at least) this will include like an engineered cutter or corvette, but more like a ship specificly built for mining or AX etc. Which to be fair only saves a few hours of grinding. They still have to make money so I’d rather see this over ED shuttting down. Just hope they’ll reinvest this money in the game and maybe listen to their players for once. I’m more worried about them “refreshing the gamestore”, PP2 not going to be interesting at all and if the new feature is going to be anything regarding a player base I’m still very happy I didn’t buy Odyssee. Imo having a base interior makes absolutly zero sense without having SHIP INTERIORS. Haven’t seen any clear info on the engineering update though..

If the gameplay to acquire the modules and enhancements for these ships was fun and innovative, no one would be willing to pay real money to skip it as they'd be having fun working for them in game. This is the real issue here and games companies do this all the time, they lock things behind paywalls or make it tedious to work for them in game to incentivise micro transactions - all by design. Except frontier have done it not by design, but by years of incompetence and lackluster gameplay decisions, to a point where they've now realised there's money to be made by allowing players to skip their yawnfest that's been masquerading itself as 'gameplay'.

FDev should have done ship interiors per player request and then sold fixtures and fittings so we could personalise our space homes. I reckon that would reach a much bigger player market. But you know, that required actual work... .

People seem to miss the difference between Elite Dangerous and StarCitizen and are quick to criticize the latter. StarCitizen has a vision, a direction and a promise to sell to players and players who support that can CHOOSE to pledge for a ship to SUPPORT the project. All you NEED to enjoy the game is a starter pack for less than the price of an AAA game and you can grind your way to buy virtually every flyable ship with in-game currency, you don't HAVE to spend hundreds.
EliteDangerous? It has no vision, no direction, no desire to innovate, to expand, to keep things fresh and interesting for players. There's no REASON for players to want to spend real money on a ship to support the game because it's stagnant, fdev doesn't listen and they don't care. This is a last ditch effort to milk the playerbase otherwise we'd have new content, new dlc/expansions that didn't suck ass. I'm not saying I agree with all the pricing, hundreds of dollars for a virtual ship is insane to me. But they key point here is that StarCitizen was at least clear about doing it from the start and haven't hidden it or lied about it (unlike Fdev who said this would never be a thing) and there is a difference between a PLEDGE and a microtransaction. Some may disagree like I said but it was transparent.
In the case of Elite Dangerous, the game has already been out for 10 years, there was no P2W mechanics or microtransactions beyond ship paints. People have put hundreds if not thousands of hours into this game, grinding up skills and wealth and now out of nowhere lazy people can bypass all of that effort with real money. Yet Frontier have very little in terms of clear direction to offer players and nothing new since Odyssey in 2021, which they're not even willing to address issues with planet tech/space legs introduced with it. I don't personally agree with the argument that this is the "lesser evil" compared to no further updates or that it'll be "keeping the game alive" since the game that it'll keep alive is no longer the game people want to play, it'll be a glorified F2P Korean MMO in space. People avoid these kind of games precisely because of the pay2win and for people who play Elite it'll be no different.

Watch credit income and engineering get nerfed into the ground again to make ship sales more attractive. Remember back in the day when it was super difficult to earn money I expected them to introduce real money ships back then. The credit income was so punishingly low and the reputation grind so long I always expected them to introduce microtransaction ships way back in 2015/16.

The point is - there shouldn't have been such a grind to begin with. This is a "solution" to a problem that has no right to exist in the first place and was created deliberately (Grindplay = gameplay according to FDev).

    • @harrasika
      @harrasika 2 месяца назад +1

Im surprised they don't already. Usually this kind of annoying grind is specifically created so people spend money trying to bypass that grind. Being able to bypass gameplay by paying money is not the solution to bad game design. You should know better.

Judging by Frontiers current monetization model I can assume the costs will be excessive. Bought the game on xbox for nearly $80, then bought Horizons, and thats pretty much where they killed it for me. No atmosphere and no real feeling for aporoaching a planet. I did buy some arks for some colours but quickly realized that was dumb, because you couldnt see your ship so why bother. Not to mention over the years the companies version of "gameplay" was just to make the game harder to play with rediculous grinds. Whats worse, if you found a rythm where you could actually make money reasonably, theyd nerf the crap out of it. Eventually I stopped playing. This year they emailed me and said theyve closed my account due to inactivity. I still have the game, actually played it the other day for about 10 min just to confirm my progress was still intact and shut it down. They dont aupport xbox anymore anyway. Wish I could get my money back. Imagine buying a car and slowly as you drive it the company made it harder to drive and eventually they just gave up support altogether.
They had such a good thing in the beginning but fell back on laziness with a close minded view of development.
Too bad. Just a glorified demo disc at this point.

While I'm personally not comfortable with the idea of "pay-to-win," it does raise the question: What would people be "winning"? There's still skill involved with fighting Thargoids that no amont of money can purchase for you.
Bottom line for me is, time is money, so I understand if folks want to use one to supplant the other. And how someone else chooses to advance within the game doesn't necessarily affect my enjoyment.
The idea that Frontier might extend the grind for people who don't spend money on ships, modules, etc., is valid, but their history has been to make the game less grindy. Anyone who played the game as long as Ant or me or some other folks might remember how long it used to take to put the credits together for an Anaconda, whereas now you can buy one within a few days of starting a fresh account.

So far not premium. As long as I can get everything they offer for cash in the game without paying anything but credits, I don't care. Selling exclusive stuff that is not cosmetic would be real bad in my opinion... BUT that's not the case and let's just hope it won't even come that far.

What would be truly interesting would be allowing players to sell each other stuff (engineered modules, mats, etc.) for ARX. Let us use ARX as currency between ourselves. This allows me to unload this fat pile of ARX im sitting on into other player's wallets. I currently happen to have more money than time (for gaming), others have more time than money. This allows some balancing for us players, which also helps smooth over any pay to win aspects. Similar to how Warframe (another game i love and have thousands of hours in over the past 10 years) does with their premium currency, Platinum. It allows me to share my money with the other players, preferably newer ones - to help build and strengthen the overall community.

Not only do we practically give carriers away as it is (my buddy got one within 2 weeks, then stopped playing because he burned himself out and felt he had achieved the end game) but now people will probably buy stuff we originally grinded rank for. I understand they need an income, but perhaps we should first focus on updating the entire game into a "current gen" title before we switch the current presentation. There are many things ahead of that this game needs more.

I think selling ships that can ONLY be bought with real money is a great business move, so long as they are comparable to existing ships in terms of capabilities, and I hope it keeps Elite alive for a long long time. I just don't think the ships should be fully kitted out when purchased.

    • @moogleslam

@@imushavem4061 I compare it to other games I play, such as World of Tanks. This has a few hundred tanks you can get by grinding in game, then a few hundred more you can buy with real money. The grind tanks and money tanks are all comparable in characteristics, so there's no pay to win element. It just gives players a chance to get something else while supporting the developers. Or as another example, iRacing. This gives you 23 cars and 29 tracks with a monthly subscription, then there are dozens more of each for $11.95 or $14.95 respectively. Same with MSFS like ObsidianAnt said, or countless other games. Lots of players want something unique and they're more than willing to pay for it. At the same time, the developer creates another income stream from which to further develop the game, and give more back to the players.
As I said, the part I really don't like is that these ships are fully kitted out. This seems especially redundant when Frontier are making engineering/material gathering easier.

This is yet another example of Frontier’s mismanagement and being disconnected from their player base. The game is entirely subsidized by passion projects and diehard players, none of which need or want to buy ships for cash. The overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam will prevent 99.9% of new players from risking picking Elite up for the first time. Until Fdev starts rubbing their 2 remaining brain cells together to figure out what players actually want, actions like these put Elite one more step closer to having the plug being pulled. Violating their own TOS is a pretty classic fuckup though.

this literally just serves to be predatory against new players who either
    1. dont know how to build ships properly
    2. dont know how fast and easy it is to make credits
its so predatory and weird, no one is gonna buy this unless they fit in on one of those categories
