Yeah, that shifting out of drive to reverse while flying down the hwy was really useful to hear. Who would have thunk it! California drivers remember that.
@@ratdad48I do it all the time, when backing up, then put it in drive while still moving backwards.
@bernswonger57 Well, you have a point.🤔 I think I, too, have done that particular move.

Tip: If you park the car on a uphill or downhill - put It In neutral, press the handbrake and then put It In P. And when you drive off that uphill or downhill park spot, put It In D or R and that’s when you reliease the parking brake so your transmission won’t have that “kick” which everyone with a older car transmissions has felt
WORKS like a charm I do that all the time
@@ronrichardson1276 Me too, and there’s no kick when putting in gear
How do you press the HAND BRAKE?😮
Aah yes, short term solutions for long term problems. Gotta love being poor/medium income.
@@idontknow2293 some cars have a button for "hand" break
I will say this because I’m a mechanic with 50+ years in the industry. Driving in city traffic with long wait times at each light I shift my automatic transmissions into neutral position so the transmission will free wheel and flush oil through the clutches and bands then right before the light changes I shift back into the drive position while the hole time my foot is on the brake pedal. This method speeds up the rotational shaft speed of the transmission- in turn speeds up the transmission oil pump that speeds up oil flow through the transmission to keep clean fluid running through your transmission and help lower transmission fluid temperature lower that helps keep are the parts in your transmission cooler . It also helps your engine last longer because your engine is idling under load at the stop light at low rpm for up to 1.5 minutes. A lot of parts in a engine are lubricated by secondary oil splash off and at idle rpm your oil system pressure is low and which diminishes oil splash . So that’s way I always let my engine and transmission free wheel in neutral at stop lights.
I do similarly. Granted, I've got one brake line left.
@@pubuapubua what happened to the other 3 lines 😱🤪😂👍

I usually have my transmission fluid changed about one a year. A lot can happen in 60K miles. As I have a pickup with a traditional drivetrain, I also have the differential serviced as well. Keeping ALL the oils and fluids fresh will definitely increase the lifespan of your vehicle.
45 to 70 though miles.and don't go to the quickly oil change place.its the filter that needs to be replaced.check it out.
@@erichansen7161
Erich, you are 💯% correct about the x mission. Years ago that’s how the fluid/ oil was changed. Drain the fluid, drop the pan, remove and replace the filter, replace the pan and fill er up with fresh. But, heck! Try to find a place that’ll do it nowadays! It’s almost impossible!

Scotty, you are soo correct with the transmission changes. On my 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix I did multiple changes. I just sold the car with 223,693 miles on it and that 3.8l and transmission still ran great.

You can't accidentally go into Reverse by simply bumping it.
It will go into Neutral by bumping it, but you have to push the button on the side (like you did when demonstrating) in order to put it into Reverse.
If you are stuck in traffic, leave it in Drive. You may need to move quickly if something happens.
All the new models it still doesn't let you

@@youtubefan2132 nah there was this one time my dad was driving me home from the bar after I got plastered and I wanted him to put it in sport so I tried to do it myself and accidentally put it in park. I once shifted my 1989 Toyota long bed pickup into reverse on the freeway at a normal freeway speed (Downtown L.A., non-rush hour time). It was only for a second or less, but scared the xxxx out of me as it locked the tires and shook the entire truck violently. Luckily, it didn’t slide to the side or spin out. After I popped it back into drive, it rode normally and I never had any issues with the transmission. Didn’t realize how lucky I was until this video-probably due to it being an older Toyota built in Japan.

If you can accidentally push your trans from drive to reverse, you already have a transmission problem.
SmashThat TV
Exactly what I thought.
It happened to my wife some years ago. While driving, a Hyundai Santa Fe V6, 2005 model, she, for an unexplainable reason, went from D to R. I panicked. Next day, Monday, I called Hyundai service and they reassured me that no harm has occurred. This incident happened in 2011. I still drive this car without having any issues.
Thought the same thing because you still have to to hold the side button down to shift from neutral to reverse.
Modern transmissions won't go into R until a very low speed. There's some kind of safety lockout based on how fast the output shaft is spinning.
SmashThat TV
Yeah that's it, you shouldn't be able to do that, unless you press the button, you can go from drive into n but you usually don't do that.
I treat Park like Neutral on a manual transmission and have had several owners tell me to stop doing that while driving their cars because they were obviously clueless as to how they work. Everything this guy said was spot on.
Park on an auto is the same as neutral on an auto also except the parking sprag
When I was a kid, one of my friend's wanted me to come over to check out his Dad's new Car, his Dad's old Car had a three speed manual column shift, a "three on the tree", so, I've gone over and his Dad has offered to take us for a "spin" up the road, so we've piled in all chuffed and eager to go, taking off was impressive, his Dad really gave the thing some "curry", a half a mile and god all mighty explosion of gearbox tearing itself to pieces down the road later, and his Dad's manic grinning has dissolved into sobs of anguish as he's trying to come to terms with having mistakenly shifted gears on his new Tri-matic column shift......
My friend and I quietly got out and walked back home, his Dad was never the same....
This is why I drive a manual, so I can wreck my transmission in funner cheaper ways.

I have a great father, but he grew up in a major city. I grew up in a small city, came to in a megapolis, and now live in a small town on the edge of being a very rural area. There are things he knows I dont. There's things I know he doesn't. I'm still learning from my father. These days he's also learning from me. He has a lot to teach me about taxs. I have a lot to teach him about hunting. This is all to say - we are not all things at all times. We all have areas of knowledge and areas of ignorance.
The celicas fan is kicking on - flushing out the universal yellow fluid and using the red unplugged the system and the cooling system is working like new .. this dang car hugs the road .. she's a dream and I see why you love the 94 celica Scotty .. thank you !
Do you recommend a transmission flush or drain/fill? I have observed that when doing a flush over 100k if a flush has not previously been completed, then it can cause problems. Maybe it depends on the vehicle too.
Me: *breaths*
Scotty: YOU’RE RUINING YOUR TRANSMISSION
lmfao!
ME: i got dominos so i’m gonna eat it in the car
SCOTT: that will destroy your transmission
"Dont do burnouts all the time", proceeds to smokeout the entire road 😂😂 This mans a G
Oil and transmission fluids are there to not only lubricate and provide cooling, they isolate particles. Now when the fluid becomes saturated with particles, that is described as the fluid breaking down. That is why it is necessary to change fluids.
Dang , really wanted to slam it from drive to reverse and back while doing 100 .
That's how I've always done it. He didn't say not to slam it from reverse into drive though!!!!
Thomas Fletcher hey don’t do that, you will most likely destroy the transmission!!!
@@lukewenzel8085 forehead slap
Lol
Yep that's what my buddy's x-gf did, pretty much. Destroyed the reverse completely. all it did was go clik clik clik clik while we pushed it out the drive way every time! Otherwise fine.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE INTRO! I revved up my engine and it destroyed my transmission.
Blows your dam car up
Very good 👍 👍👍👍👍👍👍
last year my husband died 😔he use to share this kind of information but now my children don’t know anything about the cars
Back in 1967, my then 2 year old brother was sitting in our mom's lap up front. Our parent's car was a 1964 Ford Galaxie CUT, auto transmission.
It posted while I was typing. Anyway, it had a center console stick with a button on top to shift. My brother suddenly grabbed the stick and shifted it to reverse while the car was going 40 mph. There was a loud bang and the car jerked to a stop. After that, the car vibrated while driving and there was no reverse. Our dad took the car to a shop the next day, they repaired it and it was good as new again. Back then it cost a few hundred dollars to repair the transmission. My brother from then on Sat in the back seat with us.
Dont know why I came across this video, but i love this guy’s personality
Scotty's kewl
They are addicting because of all the knowledge Scotty shares.
Welcome to the jungle
first time here. Scotty is great but he should cull the morons.
Me: time to go to sleep
YT recomendation: *this vid*
Me: I gues not then
AQN 876 lmao factsss
same 😂😂
Yup
itsok2camp that’s kinda weird tho
Im in bed with a joint right now and this came up hahahahah
He makes sense on this on. I also glad to see he has had a break from slagging off European cars.
Thank you Scotty, l enjoy & appreciate your good advice videos more & more!
He’d be a good salesman for the “sham wow”.
Don't put it in drive you might go forward
Mine went sideways
Beebop Burrick 😂😂
Aren't you the brightest🔦
Stephen Baines how fucked is your car?
Thanks for all the likes
I agree with Scitty 100%! However in 1950 the Buick Dyjaflow and Chevrolet Powerglide Transmissions could be shifted from drive to reverse without severe damage! The shift pattern was P N D L R! Hydramatic shift pattern P R N D D2. If you shift yhe latter from D to R, you might just shift from D to P! Regardless, it wss bad for the drive line, ie universal joints! Thanks Scotty. Im 87 yo and have seen a lot! My 2008 VOLVO X C 70 with a Toyota 5 speed trans AWD just has R N D plus another lever thst you can manually shift, but I dont know how to use it! I had a beautiful 1990 white DOHC VOLVO, 289,000 mi that ran like a top. Got T boned, totaled, but still drove it for another 3 years! Didn't accept the insurance claim. Have a great day and stay safe!
Does anyone else want to go through his garage id bet he's got some GEMS in there for every car on the planet LOL
I love how the thumbnail is just a picture of a car in drive with and arrow and the caption "Don't"
The idea is:
Don't touch that Automatic stick.
Touch the Manual one. xD
*OBVIOUS JOKE*
Rob 326 step 1: sell car
Step 2: buy a manual one
Sorry to tell ya,but i don't need to sell it.
It is a Skoda with a MANUAL. xD
Johnny Waffles How's about don't drive automatic cars because it's automatic shit.
or dont do stupid shit

I think you just like using the word "clickbait" 😜
As someone who was an ASE mastee tech amd ran an automotive repair shop for 30 years I agree with everything Scott is saying
Bumped 96 camaro from drive to reverse at 60. Engine stalled. I popped it right back into drive. Worked fine afterwards
Girl in my high school blew her transmission after ripping it into reverse in a drive thru because she entered too fast. She told us (the class) that it was because she forgot she had brakes. That Taco Bell musta been good tho
Honestly how does one obtain a driver's license and forget that they have brakes?
What if she had seen a pedestrian and "forgot about brakes".
Here in Europe we have a bunch of dumb drivers but this takes the crown for me.
@@lazar2175 Miami: let me introduce myself
wait cars have brakes?!?!
@@TreeHugger27 Some say they have seen the brakes but it is unclear if they actually exist or is it just a myth.
Either way reverse slamming is superior either way, i'm pretty sure aliens do it too on their faster than light spaceships.
You must have gone to high school recently, the weed strains have only gotten to the "forget about brakes while driving" level in the last few years.
Intro: “rev your engines” *breaks transmission*
I couldn't stop laughing for 5 min that's great😂😂😂😂😂
Z/J Gaming & TV 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
1:00 When I was 16 I was visiting a friend in Antigua. We had a rental car and we though it would be a neat idea to put the car in reverse going 30 mph. The wheels locked up and we almost crashed. 🤣
Very interesting n informative upload. Will keep that in mind dealing with auto trans. Kudos. New subscriber because of this vid. Anticipating ur next vid. Peace
The sound it makes when trying to shift into reverse going 65mph still haunts my dreams.
i heard that sound before, i struggled to make the difference between it and somebody yelling in Quebec French, i think the driver at the time had something to do with the yelling as he realized how fucked his car now was

I made my own dipstick for an old ML320 Mercedes suv. Used a length of stainless throttle cable with a dash of white paint on the end so I could at least check the colour. No vehicle goes 22 years on same fluid.
