    So good to hear you say these horses aren't started till 4, in the UK we never start lungeing before 3, put away and then bring back to start properly at 4 and are shocked at Americans starting at 2.

    • @suloco121

      They need longer to grow. They get rushed, greedy people.

    • @pwd1679
      @pwd1679 Год назад +25

      Yes, it's not uncommon, to start groundwork with a two year old. Or even sooner, many horseman will have them halter broke and leading well before their one. Those same horseman will then turn them out and allow them to be a horse till they're three, when they start them under saddle. Generally not putting them to work till they're four. The racing industry, really don't consider age, nor do they train their horses to anything but run in a left turn.

    Approx. 2:54 mark - WOW - that vintage page out of the Sears catalogue !! Not only could you buy a pony saddle from them, but also a LIVE Shetland pony or burro to put under it !
    I guess that was either a very old catalogue page, OR it was the one my Mum ripped out of the 'Sears Christmas Catalogue' before my pony loving hands, as a kid, could see it - or she'd have NEVER gotten any peace ! LOL

    • @appaloosa42
      @appaloosa42 6 месяцев назад +1

      Those Sears ( and Montgomery Ward) saddles were mass-produced by Bona Allen, which remained in business into the 1990’s.
      I own several of them, and would LOVE to have them redone by a competent saddler!
      My own saddle is a 13”(!) Bona Allen custom slick-seat Roper; only one I’ve ever seen!

    • @voiceofreason7856
      @voiceofreason7856 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@appaloosa42 About 4 or 5 years ago, I found a pony saddle at an antiques store, very similar to the one that Clever Cowgirl found at the auction, all nicely studded all round the fenders, etc. , but I couldn't find a makers stamp on it. I snapped it up, regardless. It was in great shape for it's obvious age, overall, but the fleece was just about completely gone on it ! No matter, since it'll never be used for riding. But it fits right in, in my 'old west' themed home. I just use it for a decoration ! :)

    Love some of these horses, especially the draft crosses. My two best jumpers EVER were draft crisses, one TB-Belgian monster who lived to be 30, and never once stopped at a fence in 25 years of jumping, first for me a junior, then for many years of students. The second was a pink appy ~ about 16.1 ~ with a bald dish face, tiny pricked ears & Arab-looking neck. He was a rescue, bought off a drunken cowboy down the road for $250 & a VW carcass. Funniest looking horse who wasn't afraid of anything but spooked at anything the way Arabs sometimes do. He wasn't broke at all. never gave me any trouble except that he refused to rein back. He learned on our 10th or 12th ride, trail ride. Riding along an old ranch road by the train tracks. Train came along. Appy froze, looked at the train & began running backwards. I pretedned that's what I wanted, applied appropriate aids, & by the time we got back to the barn, that horse ~ no joke ~ would've jumped a picnic table backwards. He felt like he could jump ~ you know, that athletic, swinging feeling all athletic horses have at the walk, even when green broke. I was in my dressage saddle, talking to a friend on the other side of the fence. Something spooked hime & he jumped out of the ring from a stands... anyhow, a good draft cross is always fun,

    Loved this sale and the way the horses were presented. They gave you time to actually look at the horses and showed them in a manner that allowed you to see their natural dispositions and movement. I also learned about mountain horses that are not common where I grew up. Our preferred trail horses were much smaller and gaited but these guys with their calm dispositions and willingness to work seem to be a great choice as a trail horse.

    You are the first person ever that I have subscribed to! I’m guessing that means I will be notified when you have a new video. Your auction videos are fascinating because we don’t have horse auctions in New Zealand with very rare exceptions. Even to purchase from our small wild horse population you have to apply because your property is checked out in advance to ensure you have the proper facilities and knowledge before you are allowed to purchase - these are for horses that are only $250, so that isn’t an auction process like what you attend. The 'normal' horse auction for you is very foreign to me. I like the parts where you are checking out the horse for conformation and signs you look for in temperament. Your clip showing the trailhead where you can camp for free at the end of this video I was swooning with envy at the vast lands not covered in fences and gates.

    Fun to see all those beauties! Too bad you didn't get one.....very enjoyable to see all those horses, hopefully, they all go to good homes. It's so hard to watch the auctions where you know the horses are going to be killed if they don't get adopted! And so unfair. We consider our own lives to be so precious, but with other species, we don't understand that they very much value their own lives, and want to live out a long and comfortable life too.

    I ride jumpers, I want one of these lovely quiet pack horses. One of my horses hates being in nature. Not kidding, will stand up on his hind legs when I suggest a walk in the woods. However, he lives for horse shows! He’s been there done that, so there’s no pressure at home. Get him to a show and he puffs up and moves like a rocket. I love him. But a trail horse would be awesome too.

    Nice sale, thanks for sharing this video. My favorites were the big mare, the app, and of course that paint foal.

    I get the tack “fetish”. I love browsing tack stores and any time I’m in a country store like TSC I have to go check out the tack aisle, even though I haven’t owned a horse in 40+ years.
