I wouldn't be able to afford it even if you did, Troy! Regardless, I still mean to do business with you at some point since a primary interest we share is (clearly) enjoying mechanical excellence. I'm happy to say I won't have to be patient for long until that; I'm now down to just over a year to mortgage payoff. Music boxes will go well with my collection of vintage and modern tinplate toys. as I think I've mentioned. I'll be perfectly satisfied to enjoy complex pieces like this secondhand, anyway. With the limits on dexterity my disability puts on me, I cringe just _thinking_ about trying to handle it. That's OK, I like model aircraft too, but I'd be just as leery of flying the large gas turbine jets several fellows I know do...having the price of a compact car zipping around under my fingers is not something I'm interested in, either.
As a blind guy, I love Music Boxes. The windup ones, and the antique ones. I will admit that the songs featured in this music box is not familar to me. I probably heard it before on some classical music radio stations.
Hurrah! What a pleasant sound is the melody played by music-box. Some antique mechanical clocks played melodies for each hour on built in music-box. Some of them only marked the hours by melodies. Such clocks are elaborate version of passing strike. Some clocks played melodies just before counting the hours on dome shaped bell or coiled wire gong. Such clocks are elaborate version of hour counting clocks. Nowadays these types of music-boxes and chiming clocks are electronically imitated by some quartz clocks because they contains electronically recorded and programmed circuit board of sound chips connected to speaker. But they can't beat the sound of real music-boxes and chimes.
What I think would have been really cool with this music box. As if the creator of it actually turn the king into an otamatone and made him functional so he was moving while the piano was playing.
I think that originally he did just that, but at some point his movement mechanisms stopped working. You can see his hands are poised above the keys, and given how intricate his design is, the fingers would most likely be properly placed on the instrument if he wasn't automated. Also, his arms have spaces in the shoulder joints, which again, is not aligned with the rest of his design. Either way, it's incredible craftsmanship.

At which year did Francois Nicole flourish? I can't seem to find any biography of him online. Was he a contemporary of the famous automaton maker Jaquet Droz? P. S. I love your channel, I immediately subbed when I saw your videos
Francois was a little later than Jacquet Droz. Francois is best known for his music boxes from around 1810 (or so) to maybe 1830/1840 or so. He invented the damper and his music boxes are considered the "best of he best". Francois was a cousin of the more common Nicole Freres makers. Droz died in 1790.
