- On the occasion of the SIHH 2017, Van Cleef & Arpels is delighted to unveil its first Extraordinary Object: the Automate Fée Ondine. The fruit of long years’ work and an intense collaboration with automaton maker François Junod, the project also owes its existence to the savoir-faire of the numerous craftsmen who have taken part in its creation

This could have been have been made 200 years ago, not a computer in sight. I hope this knowledge never gets lost.
Just because they don't put it on display, doesn't mean they didn't use CADs to design the entire thing, of course they did. There are good reasons why it in fact wasn't made 200 or even 30 years ago. If you look at product design of... anything really over past few decades you can visually see computer design creeping in and it's fantastic, you get design lines and quality of engineering that just isn't viable with more manual methods, or worse trying to do things freehand.
and King Tuts burial mask was made THOUSANDS of years ago...and its quality can hardly be matched today by any artisan...even with computer assistance
@@aleksandersuur9475 I'm not disparaging CAD, maybe it was used but that was assembled entirely hand using ancient tools.
@@demonoid7469 Astonishing!!! King Tut's sarcophagus makes me almost weep at the beauty of it. It's the same with Gothic Cathedrals.
@@morgantaylor517 I really love the bronze age head dresses made of gold, the beautiful crowns and jewels. I also awe at illuminated manuscripts, celtic technology... i don't doubt for one moment that the stories of the elves are real when i look at some of those things. These artisans rose up to the challenge with their gifts and abilities to create her. She's amazing. I wonder if she has a name.
I am crying at such exquisite beauty and elegance. It is transformative. The passion, cooperation and skill of these craftsmen is astounding. I have no more words left except I wish I could experience this in person.

Automatons are rarely seen outside of Europe except for some wealthy Americans bringing some to the USA. Most are very old and made in the early to mid 1800s.

I've only seen it in videos, not lucky enough to see it in person, but this device is one of the most glorious works of art that I have ever beheld.
I honestly didn't think I'd be more blown away in awe and beauty than when I first watched in amazement as someone wound this piece. I watched the scene unfold and come to life in a video just yesterday...and somehow today after watching *this* video I stand corrected. Every piece has a purpose and within that purpose is beauty!
Two things steal my heart: glass greenhouse gardens and hand craftsmanship.
This is one of the most beautiful object d'art to have been imagined. Akin to the flowers of Fabergé, the clocks of Cartier, the crown jewels of Eangland. It is an inspiration and a real spur in my side. I want to thank you all for your beauty and your grace, for inspiring me to better myself and my art.
My grandmother gave me my first music box . I've been so fascinated by them . This is truly a beautiful art.

As a full-time automaton builder that works with metal objects daily to create, I love seing the incredible teamwork in multiple disciplines of creativity/ art/ engineering that it took to create this masterpiece! I love creating this art , but love seeing what other true masters create. It's inspiring!

This single object combines two of my greatest passions: Jewelry and mechanical devices. I am sad that I won't be able to go beyond a hobbiest's level of skill in either crafts, but I am glad to see that I am not the only one who seeks to combine them.
