  • Peacock clock horloge du paon Ermitage museum St Petersburg 18th made by James Cox an english clock maker and sold to Potemkin (favorit of the queen Cahterine the great) in spare parts. It took 9 years for a russian mecanic Ivan Kulibin to put them up together again. Well worth it. It works only once a year during the withe nights in June to preserve the mechanism so you have very few chance to see it work. But what a treat then !
    Made of guilded bronze silver & glass, height 3 meters. The dial of the clock is into the head fo the mushroom with a dragonfly moving on top (at the foot of the tree)
    I ve just discovered a new automaton working every day at 2 pm, made by James Cox the Silver Swan in North of England Bowes Museum. Type Silver swan automaton & see some videos ont the subject
    Je viens de découvrir un nouvel automate en état de marche fait aussi par James Cox le cygne d'argent au nord de l'Angleterre Bowes Museum. tapez Silver swan automaton pour voir les qlq vidéos sur ce sujet
    According to a comment its plays now every wednesday around 13 PM. Selon un commentaire on peut le voir fonctionner maintenant chaque mercredi vers 13heures

    Exactly! Faberge did his incredible beautiful egg with the concept of this clock in mind.

    I had the incredible fortune of visiting the State Hermitage museum recently (while traveling to Russia) and witness this amazing work of art. Unfortunately, the clock only runs a couple of times a year, so I didn't have a chance to see it operating...but it's so jaw-droppingly beautiful that I'd blow Putin in a second for a chance to watch this marvel strike the hour live.
    Russia is a place of unbelievable beauty and mystery. Regardless of what you may feel about their politics, it's a country one has to witness in this lifetime.

      As i mentionned it is not arussian artifact mais all the same a russian clockmaker is still doing the maintenance and keeps it in working order. A real beauty worth the trip but not only Russia is a country full of marvels. We did not see everthing we wanted but at least we saw the main cities of the European side, to see next Siberia and far east

    The same guy made the Silver Swan in the Bowes museum Co. Durham. I believe those two are the only pieces of his work remaining. I think the peacock plays on 21st June each year. Something to do with Catherine the Great as I believe it's her peacock. Amazing, beautiful piece of engineering. 😀

      Yes you are quite right , i saw the silver swan in a youtube video too. It is very difficult to know exactly when it is possible to see it working, some said every wednesday ? it must change probably

    This evening I had a lecture by Mr.Ian White about the Clockmaker JAMES COX (not Cook). I think also you have to add behind 18th . . . . . the word CENTURY. Such great art deserves a correct story. I had the opportunity in the eighties to see it working: fantastic. Thank you for this film, because in those days you were not allowed to make pictures or films. Elise

    The design of the clock, with the peacock, perched up on a tree reminds me of one of Faberge's eggs, the one with the mechanical, detachable pacock.

    That peacock clock is remarkable, with the golden peacock, rooster, and owl, although a bit eerie. You can jump to about 46 seconds to get to the clock.

  • @remyposees

    I don't know who copied who since the clock was in the collection of Catherine the queen in 1797 and the egg of Fabergé was delivered in 1908. So i suppose Faberge saw the automaton and created something similar with the egg (it is my guess). But both are great works, the very big one and the small one, a treat for the eyes

  • @remyposees
    @remyposees  13 лет назад +4

    @etrax2000 i suppose yes but it is made of guilded bronze, and restoration of such a masterpiece must cost a lot of money and rather delicate because of the mechanism and as you know museum are always short of money. But as it is i still think it is a miracle it made it from 1770 up to now, remember it is the only huge automaton left from this time.

    • @remyposees
      @remyposees  6 лет назад +1

      in fact yes it was his lover Potemkine who bought it for her in parts in England. It had to be reassembled in Russia which took some time 9 years

    • @nick0ism
      @nick0ism 6 лет назад +1

      remyposees ...so you're meant to say that this clock wasn't sent to Russia as it is now, but with all the separate pieces disassembled? The nuts, bolts, and gears; the individual feathers and leaves; the tree barks and woodland critters... You meant all that needed to be assembled IKEA-style for years beforehand??!

    • @remyposees
      @remyposees  6 лет назад +1

      yes exactly but at this time they took their time & contrary to Ikea they had no notice. The guy you assembled it was a king genius of mechanism. Reead my description under the video. It is all explained there

    I am no mechanic but i suppose the same way as music boxes work,.as a clockwork device, a metal disk or cylinder rotating and the sound is produced by means of pins & comb.It is a supposition. In these times the cylinders were removable and so you could change the tunes,, I would have like to know too but nobody was there able to do that when we visited

  • @remyposees
    @remyposees  13 лет назад +1

    @etrax2000 i agree with you but unless you are Bill Gates or Rockefelfer few individual could afford to buy them and pay the maintenance costs too, and then you would not be allowed anymore to see them they would be private properties. That is why they are better in a museum for everybody to see of course the musuem is supposed to maintain it properply (which is not always the case unfortunately) remember too that as a citizen you pay with your taxes the maintenance of such works of art

    @etrax2000 "Thousands of churches in Russia are falling apart" you obviously have no idea what you're talking about, in my small city they've restored & build like 5 new churches I wish they spent those money a new hospital instead of another church no one cares about except old grannies

    • @remyposees
      @remyposees  10 лет назад +1

      i think all grannies who believe in god must have their church, and people need an hospital too. To erase or not restoring churches is as stupid as to build 5 churches in a small city; the body & soul must be equality taken into account. For my part i am no believer but i think that cultural heritage must be preserved it is part of each country's history and is very important.
