I think the answer to that is that mass production earns more money, and these items are very difficult to make, but on the other hand it makes them far more special and valuable.

Originally sold in pairs, only one matched pair is known to exist, and a handful of loose examples. The last one to be found was restored by Parmigiani, and I believe that was about ten years ago.
